The Blue Heron did an amazing job catering our wedding at the Barn at Stoney Hills, in Cushing, MN. We had a large wedding of about 300 people, and they did an excellent job with butler app service for cocktail hour, as well as a quick efficient job serving the large group for our plated dinner. They were always very responsive and helpful throughout the whole wedding planning process. All of our guests gave great reviews on our food and we couldn't have been more pleased. Beautiful evening for dinner on the patio. They also have dinning-room and lounge seating. The food was good to average. I would suggest not ordering the Fish & Chips basket and go for the walleye fillet instead. Prices represented dinner club prices. We had our wedding catered at the Barn at Stoney Hills in Cushing, MN by Paul & the Blue Heron staff this past weekend and I couldn't have better things to say about the food and service. The whole experience of working and with Paul from start to finish was outstanding and I would highly recommend them to cater your wedding! The dinner and appetizer menu features many different and unique options and Paul worked with us to do small customizations to fit perfectly together. Noah and I were able to do a tasting last year during the planning process which was really helpful. We also had an addition of 9 family members who hadn't RSVPd (yikes!), and Paul was kind enough to add 9 additional meals week-of. He checked in often in the weeks leading up to the wedding and I never had one ounce of worry leading into the evening which I was very thankful for. The whole team was so professional - smiling faces throughout the whole evening, prompt clean-up, and our family had nothing but wonderful reviews of the food. For the price of a upscale restaurant steak its only bar quality food. I had the sirloin steak (medium rare) and it came out looking like grey/brownish shoe leather. While it's internal temp was correct it was totally unappealing. I suspect the grill wasn't hot enough... the spinach dip side we ordered was served with corn chips and what looked like a quartered tortilla but was tasty. All in all if you're looking for aa beer and a burger this would be ok. If you're looking for a somewhat upscale meal then there are other places that are better. read more

The "Meh" classification afforded by the two-star rating pretty much sums up "the Blue." I grew up in Cold Spring and always held the establishment in pretty high esteem as go-to special occasion fancy establishment. As a grown-up, I can confidently say that was wholly unjustified. Lackluster, greasy food, average to crummy service, and truly unimpressive ambiance. With a bar set at "Better Than Good," I suppose they manage to clear it. While I have been tepid on the place for some years now, my last visit really put a fine point on my opinion that the place sucks. Fresh from a flight and uninterested in the Thursday Night All-You-Can-Eat Pasta Bar, I opted for the salad bar for a hefty $10.95. I cannot believe the iceberg lettuce and mealy tomatoes really cost the owners anywhere near that amount. While I would have just chalked this up as garden-variety disappointment, it was hard to ignore the entire long island ice tea spilled on my husband and still charged on the tab. Truth of the matter is I'll probably find myself there again, but I refuse to believe that being the only restaurant in an town should make it "fine" dining. read more

My family comes to visit this area every year and in the past, we always looked forward to eating here. That has changed and we most likely wont be coming back. This restaurant has gone downhill significantly and has become severely disorganized. It took forever just to get our menus once we were seated. We had ordered and received our drink menus before my dad got frustrated and finally went and found menus himself. The worst part was that the waitress didn't even seem to care. The food was super expensive, especially for the service and quality that you received. I honestly know that I could go to Chick Fil A and be treated better and have better food for a lot less money than here. I had chicken that was 15 dollars and it was just a very small piece breaded chicken with a little bit of alfredo sauce on it. I asked for cheese on my baked potato and they brought me out nacho cheese... I am not sure how the quality dropped so quickly. The "fresh baked rolls" weren't that. It was obvious that they came from the fridge because they were cold, not room temperature, but cold. If you want overpriced food, a chaotic atmosphere, rude and inattentive waitresses, this is the spot for you. read more

Moved on the to the main buffet: Trays of pancakes, syrup, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing - one piece of chicken remained, out of roast beef, and a sliver of ham left. For dessert, a side table with some slices of cake, served up on classy styrofoam plates with spatters of generic reddi-whip all over from customers trying to get the last bit out of the cans? Services was attentive enough, given they had nothing else to do. I love the 5 star survey given that essentially compares it against TV dinners for that rating. read more

Our food was very good, but the service was terrible. We got our food over an hour after sitting down, and it was not very busy for a Friday night. But the waitress that walked around the whole time we were there, with her mask completely tucked under her chin, will keep me from coming back for a long time. I truly had one of the worst experiences ever here. My husband and I came here for a grooms dinner the night before my best friends wedding. We were all in a back room. The service was ridiculously slow and our drinks were constantly empty. Well to top the cake (haha a little wedding humor), they ran out of prime rib which most people ordered, and the first and only person they asked to change their order was the GROOM!!!!! What?!?!? I'm thinking this was the absolute rudest thing I have ever seen! The food was good when we got it. However to make my opinion even more final, I did email the restaurant the next day to state my concerns to management and there was NO RESPONSE!!! I will never go back here!!! read more

My wife and I had our wedding reception at the Blue Heron and we couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. The management was VERY helpful from start to finish. There were no unreturned emails or phone calls and all of our requests were either granted or they helped to find us a compromise. Pricing for a reception was higher than some places, but much lower than nearby St. Cloud, and definitely worth what we paid. The service on the night of our wedding was phenomenal. All of the servers were courteous, prompt, and knew exactly what they were doing. The food that we ate was delicious and it was served incredibly fast considering we had almost 200 people. We have not heard of anyone getting their food after others were done eating. I can't speak for their restaurant service to contradict the other poster. However, I know that as a reception hall, I will recommend the Blue Heron to everyone I know. read more

We used The Great Blue Heron to cater our wedding. As the owner of an events space, I was extremely concerned about the quality and execution of each service we chose to use at our wedding hosted in our family's yard on Lake Koronis. We were especially particular on the catering company. After interviewing, taste testing and proposal reviewing, it was clear that we should use Blue Heron. Paul and the Blue Heron ended up surpassing our high expectations and standards. Not only did he and they work closely with us to help execute every detail but they took on our special requests of using some of our own products, materials and ingredients to help make the day more special for us and our guests. On the day of our wedding we experienced torrential rain (and the reception was outside in a tent). Paul and his team delivered our meal to our guests with flawless execution and with a smile on their face even though their prep space was mud-filled, wet, cold and very much less than ideal. Whether you are looking for a caterer for a corporate event, a grad party, perhaps an anniversary or for a wedding, I recommend you stop looking at this moment and give this company a call. This place is FANTASTIC!!! A delicious menu filled with lots of homemade items - which is why it's also a vegetarian friendly place too! They have a cajun chicken ravioli that they'll saute up fresh mushrooms to replace the chicken and it's so yummy. Their alfredo sauce is "to die for" and their salsa is so tasty you could practically it like a gazpacho! Lol! The pasta bar is addictive - so delicious you'll never want to miss it! Cold Spring, MN- not the most populated city I have been too, however everything about The Great Blue Heron outmatched many of the larger city restaurant establishments that I have visited. The variety of the restaurant is what caught my attention most. It was wonderful upon our arrival to the restaurant how we were given the option of the less formal lounge/bar area or the more formal/elegant dining room area. I have sat in both areas but last night decided to sit in the lounge. Service from our server was prompt, professional, and high spirited, which made our stay very enjoyable. The menu consists of many different options from burgers to salads and steaks to seafood, in addition to pastas, flatbreads, and appetizers. Also, the restaurant has a salad bar!! This is something that many restaurants sadly have strayed from. A personal favorite is the prime rib offered on Fridays and Saturdays. You can't get anything comparable in the area. It is amazing beyond words!! Best part is that the establishment is family owned and operated which fits the typical MN nice, small town atmosphere! A big thanks to this family for obviously striving to ensure their patrons have a top notch, enjoyable experience!
