I really wanted to like this place. The vibe is awesome & the partially open kitchen is cool but the service was incredibly lacking & the food was mostly sub par. We visited for lunch and the restaurant was about half full. Our server however, was often nowhere to be found & we had to have the food runner attempt to help us on more than one occasion. Even then, we still seemingly couldn't get them to bring us plates for the cornbread. Trying to pay the tab took nearly 15 minutes of just trying to flag her down. My husband ordered their burger & the fries that initially came out with it were super undercooked. My shrimp po boy had a skewer inside the sandwich (not holding the bread together but running the length of the bread.) My mother in law did say her gumbo was amazing & their cornbread was delicious but I just don't think we'll be back, it really was nothing to rave about, even if they were just having an off day. read more

We drove 2 hours for our anniversary for a New Orleans meal. The Blackberry Highball is very sour and not so fruity. We started with the Boudin Balls and Hush Puppies - both very good. My husband had the Red Beans and Rice and really enjoyed it. Lots of meat in it. I was hoping for Crafish Étouffée but it isn't on the menu any longer. So I ordered the Shrimp Étouffée. Very disappointed. Only 5 small chunks of shrimp. It also has a sort of poblano verde sauce or maybe a poblano Maque Choux without the corn. Lots of celery. And the small amount of rice. I didn't eat much of it, after the shrimp was gone it was just bad sauce. A wasted $21. The cornbread was nice with honey butter. We split the bread pudding for dinner and it is excellent - DON'T MISS IT! Service was excellent. Especially the bus boy / water refiller. P.S. They don't do anything for anniversaries. Not sure if we will drive over 2 hours each way for Étouffée that was mediocre. The Crawfish Étouffée was excellent last time. read more

We really loved the food at Krewe! My husband is a Johnnie, and grew up in the area, and he thinks it has to be the best restaurant around. We made a reservation for a Saturday night and it was busy, but you could probably walk in and be seated if it's a small party. The dinner rolls to start off the meal were amazing. We also really enjoyed the jambalaya, crab cakes, and the grilled salad. The only savory thing we wouldn't get again was the carne asada-- it was fine but not as special as the other dishes. The dessert was also a bit of a disappointment unfortunately, we tried the bread pudding but it came out lukewarm at best. The cast iron it was served in was cold, which was surprising, why not just heat it in that? The drinks were alright. Our service that particular night was pretty bad too-- our waitress was quick to take our order and the food came out pretty quick, but it took a long time for her to come back, and then another 10 minutes to get us a dessert menu. She was running all over the place so I think was busy, but I could tell she forgot about us and I wished she had atleast acknowledged it and apologized. Hopefully just a one-off. We will be back next time we want to have a date night in St Joe, and want to check out their bakery next door after trying those delicious dinner rolls. read more

Came here for Father's Day and it was one of my favorite brunch spots that I have visited. The server was very patient with our big family order and was very helpful with her recommendations. Krewe is a vibrant space with tons of references to its southern NOLA roots. The service is very friendly and helpful from the get go. The real standout on top of everything though is the food. Starting with the cornbread, heaping with tons of butter, it's a perfect initiation to your meal. Next up was the Crab Cakes, which were top tier. No matter you were, let alone in St. Joseph, MN. Creamy, savory interior with a crisp yet soft enough exterior form. The remoulade and cocktail sauce (both homemade) only added to an already great dish. Finally, the crawfish étouffée had a nice kick, great flavors, and was perfectly filling for an individual meal. When you sit down at Krewe it is easy to forget you are in a small college town in Minnesota. The decor, the beverages, the food- this is a big city experience. I was in town on business so only had time for lunch but the food was fantastic. The Ettoufaie (butchering the spelling) reminded me of The first time I tried the dish in Memphis. Wow what a great experience! Our waitress Callie was the absolute best. She had such great energy and was so kind in explaining the menu and offering suggestions since it was our first time at Krewe. The food was served in a shareable style so between two people we ordered an appetizer, large plate, shareable plate, and dessert, and we were stuffed by the end of it! All of it was so so delicious, and not pictured because we were too excited.. THE BREAD ROLLS! Krewe has a neighboring bakery which provides the bakery items to the restaurant and I'm not joking when I say these are the best rolls I've ever had. And they were served with a honey butter!! I could've eaten 12 of them. The restaurant was pretty quiet for a weekday night so no reservation was needed. There's also nearby lot parking as well as street parking. They are normally closed Tuesday. But not Fat Tuesday. The buffet was simple but impressive. All the family recipes handed down to Chef Mateo. Start with hush puppies, fluffy inside and a good size. So many people go on the cheap with these and usually get it wrong. First is a big rice cooker filled with white rice to go with the smoked turkey and sausage red beans. This was the only thing I added rice to. Chicken and sausage jambalaya, Grandpa's gumbo, and shrimp entoufee. They got a kick. Wuss that I am didn't add rice because the juice in them was so damn good. Spice and salted just right. However I was super impressed with the cooler filled with ice cold water all night, and it tasted good too. What's with the delicious water in St. Joseph? End with Erin's beignets. The only white powder that matters. Served warm, I dare you to eat just one. This will be your NOLA family. I've never been, actually the place reminded me a lot of my trip to Nashville. I'm sure there are some places in the TC to go, but this is the place to be. Definitely for the holiday but for southern Cajun in general. This was my first Mardi Gras I even wore a mask I had buried in my house waiting for this moment. Even the Mardi Gras man, Happy Lance Brunious is the entertainment here every year. Really nice restaurant in Saint Joseph with a Nawlins menu and a great beer list including beers from a variety of breweries. The food was really good and well prepared. The hush puppies were delicious and had a spicy kick. The breading on the catfish was amazing. The stuffed pork chop was a ton of food and really good and the carne asada was tender and delicious. Only minor complaint was it is geared more as a sharing thing and we are it more as entrees. My stuffed pork chop pretty much came out after everyone else was done with their food even though we ordered at the same time. But still it is worth checking out if you're in town! read more

Enjoyed our Valentines dinner. Server was great and provided good explanation of how dishes to be served as ready. Crab cakes were excellent - very crispy exterior and delicious flavor inside. We also shared the Maque Choux and the Braised Lamb Agnolotti. I had high hopes for the Maque Choux based on description, but it disappointed. It was very one note. Not only did the food absolutely knock our socks off but, the staff was so kind and worked so hard to ensure us a positive experience! The recipes used in the "signature" dishes are the grandfather of the owners truly making us feel lucky to be able to try them and lucky we were! With each bite we felt closer to Louisiana! New Orleans style cuisine - the food was so delicious, everyone at our table had only positive comments about their food (and all of us had different menu items). We were given constant attention by many different servers. Our main server was full of menu suggestions, ingredients, and eager to please our palates. The only negative was the level of noise with the full house. In other words the acoustics need some attention. It was difficult hearing the other guests at our table. I would definitely recommend dining at the Krewe. I would ask for a table along the windows or maybe dine outside if weather permits. The food is worth a try! read more

This place was a James Beard semi finalist for Best Chef Midwest. I can see how that's plausible. Food was solid. Etoufee was very good. Not James Beard good but good. Kitchen seemed like it was well organized and well run. The service was not good. We waited 30 minutes before our server came to us. We were early and tacked on a person on the spot so that's definitely on us a bit. We had a 6 top and ordered family style. 2 different rounds. We had a 20 minute wait between each round, completely fine. However our plates and silver were never cleared. When I asked for a clear, the server was visibly disgusted. This isnt a cafeteria, this is a James Beard nominee. I'm certain the chef would want us to eat his food clean. Get better front of house staff. Place will probably stay open because there is nothing like it in the area. However, I won't return because of the bad service. read more

This is my third time going to Krewe and overall I've been pretty satisfied. The story behind the restaurant/business is quite inspiring and I recommend you check it out. Essentially, the owners moved from Minneapolis to St. Joseph and are using Krewe to "expand on their mission of racial justice." Good food and a good mission? I'm in! They also own another favorite in town, Flour & Flower. The atmosphere at Krewe is great. Sometimes on weekends they have a Jazz Brunch which, combined with the food, will transport you to New Orleans -- an unexpected and welcomed twist in rural Minnesota. As for the food, I wanted to love grandpa's gumbo, but it was just way too spicy for me. Take that with a grain of salt, my spice tolerance is not high. Most recently, I got the eggs hussarde and it was wonderful! Flavor was great and potatoes were perfectly seasoned. I went one other time, and was happy but not wow-d, hence the four star review. I'm willing to have my mind changed the next time I head up and try the bread pudding! Two last tid bits: -Parking is easy. I'll be honest, I came in because I've been binge watching Treme (hbo 2010 series), and like any rational person, that meant I suddenly needed beignets. And these? They delivered. Golden, pillowy, and blessed with the powdered sugar. Paired with the brewed coffee (shockingly great, not the usual Minnesota bean water masquerading as caffeine). It was well worth the commute from the twin cities. We enjoyed yummy cocktails...The Krewe Old Fashioned and The Vitamin Bee Margarita began our tasting adventure. Krewe: A NOLA Mirage in the Heart of Minnesota I walked into Krewe in St. Joseph, lured by the promise of a NOLA experience in the heartland of Minnesota. I've had my fair share of disappointments in establishments trying to replicate the authentic soul of far-off places, yet hope springs eternal. The restaurant's ambiance was its first pitch: cool, perhaps overly so, thanks to the assertive air conditioning. One would hope that the warmth of New Orleans could permeate even a Minnesota evening. The place buzzes with excited patrons, and scanning the menu, the classics jumped out: gumbo, red beans and rice, crab cakes. It read like a love letter to New Orleans, but when they came, the dishes felt like they'd been written by someone who'd only heard tales of the place. But Krewe's rendition felt like it was playing from sheet music without understanding the soul behind the notes. The hushpuppies, overcooked on the outside and uninspired within, were far from the rich, soulful flavors one associates with Creole cooking. The gumbo? More soup than a stew, a hurried concoction that missed the deep, simmered love of authentic gumbo. It had the consistency and depth of flavor of a rushed weeknight meal. And the stinginess of the servings -- the laughably tiny pieces of bread served as a hold-me-over, for instance -- felt out of place in a narrative that should be about generosity and warmth. In another diabolical offense, the rice in the red beans and rice felt like an afterthought -- an apathetic nod to the dish's namesake that was more garnish than a main component. Service, unfortunately, was like being in a ghost story. Our server, more apparition than presence, seemed to drift through the evening, leaving my glass of Arnold Palmer perpetually empty. It's one thing to play hard to get, but this was straight-up neglect. The towering stack of dishes on our table grew taller but apparently less visible. Krewe's story extends beyond just its food. The restaurant has claimed to champion diversity and racial justice, narratives that resonate deeply with today's ethos. Yet, a quick scan revealed a different tale -- of the 19 employees, a mere two were people of color. The visible reality seemed a tad off-key for an establishment that prides itself on celebrating inclusivity. Chef Mateo Mackbee's credentials suggest a deep reverence for New Orleans culinary traditions, making it all the more baffling that Krewe seems to have missed the mark by such a margin. The restaurant's media footprint, coupled with its emphasis on diversity, sets up expectations that, regrettably, the current dining experience doesn't quite match up to. In the end, Krewe is like a convincing movie set version of NOLA restaurants - especially the gentrified ones of recent years. But it's overpriced, too salty, and the portions look like a robbery. I have The Misfortune of being dragged here once again by a business my wife works for. There was 12 of us and it took over 20 minutes just to get our drinks . Then to talk about the food . If you want to eat all at once don't go to this place . They also say that they made from scratch when most it comes out of a freezer. It took me 25 minutes from the time I ordered to get my food. The last person at our table who ordered a steak rare took over an hour and 15 minutes to get their food. Overly salty over dry not good. If you try to address the owner he will blow you off . I was going to St Cloud with friends and after reading reviews on this place I knew I wanted to try it. Got there for happy you where they offer BOGO's on wine by the glass and tap beer. My friend and I I split the bogo and enjoyed a very respectable glass of Sangiovese (I highly recommend). For dinner I was dying for some good Cajun cooking (their specialty) so I ordered the crawfish etouffee, spicy and delicious (not Minnesota spice ). My friends ordered the shrimp jambalaya and shrimp bisque. They were very pleased with their decisions. I have to tell you, though, the star of the meal was the deliciously fluffy dinner roll with honey butter and a little salt on top. Reservations were easy to make (and maybe unneeded - it wasn't that full). the waitress had another waitress with her (they were training) and they were both very friendly and attentive. We tried the gumbo and the red beans and rice (and were able to quickly confirm both were safe for a dairy allergy). Both dishes were excellent, as was the old fashioned I ordered. We drove from the Twin Cities to give this place a shot and the drive was well worth it! First of all, their baked goods are absolutely sublime -- from the little potato rolls served upon arrival, to the hush puppies, corn bread and bread pudding. All were some of the best we've ever had. I was heartened when I emailed the businessprior to making a reservation asking about vegetarian options for one of our party. I received a menu within the hour and a lot of attention was given to non-meat options. Wow! My friend ordered the vegetarian Red Beans and Rice -- I tried a bite and it was a very good non-meat version of the dish. The rest of us shared the collards, étouffée, gumbo and jambalaya. I was "warned" that the étouffée was the spiciest option on the menu. And all I can say is, "Ah, Minnesota, you Northern lightweights, you." Nothing we ordered was terrifically spicy. I wish I'd brought some Crystal in my handbag! The only downside for me? Someone got a little carried away with the salt in the collards. I couldn't eat them but the rest of the table didn't seem as affected by the over seasoning. Great beverage selections although several options were sold out.
