Before going into the room, they even have a few small puzzles to help you prep while you sit in the waiting area. These were fun brain teasers to get you thinking before going into the actual room and beginning. We only went as a group of three and did the President's Bunker room. I booked a room for a team gathering, and upon showing up there were no employees there. I called and no one answered. I called another escape room right down the road and explained the situation and the guy knew without me saying where we had originally booked because "that situation happens all the time". They got us in right away. Needless to say, I will not be booking with The Great Escape Room again. Leaving a group of 11 people hanging is truly a disappointment, and a really poor reflection on their service. read more

I think I was most annoyed at them advertising that you're "locked" in a room so don't be late, but yet someone was let in 15 minutes into the challenge. It was a fun experience, even though we didn't solve the puzzle, however once explained none of our group would have known the answers anyway. My cousins and I rented the whole room for the Presidents Bunker and we had a blast. We didn't survive but the whole world did lol. It was pretty easy to find the place - just look for the signs. Once we got there, we were welcomed politely as we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. The lobby did feel small as another party was in there waiting to start their game. We had an appointment for 6:45 and we started promptly around that time. We had Don as our instructor/supervisor and he was really cool. He didn't give us hints or clues, that we didn't earn, and he was very helpful. I think he had as much fun as we did. We thought we would have won but there was a last puzzle we didn't intend on doing. We assumed there was only 4 but at the last puzzle, a surprise puzzle showed up that threw us off. The game was pretty detailed. It was all our first time doing The Great Escape Room so we came in blindly. But now after knowing what it entails, I'm sure next time we'd win! read more

In the end, you figure out that the highlighted boy in the photo holds the status of 'prince' in a royal family and that mixed with the sheet of music, you get Prince (or at least, the artist formally known as Prince). One of his famous lyrics is 'We're gonna party like it's 1999!' (and thus, the pre-Y2K hint). So, the lock combination must be 1999, right? Doesn't seem so difficult, does it? When you only have seconds left to figure out a problem, it becomes a HUGE challenge but nonetheless, an absolute thrill all along the way. For me, this type of game was completely new and foreign. Although I initially thought the price was a little steep, I no longer feel that way after the experience. It was very exciting and before I knew it, the hour was up and there were only seconds left to solve the puzzle that would 'save us'. I went with my brother and we didn't know the other people in the group but in the end, we had all 'bonded' in some type of strange way and were giving each other high fives and hugs. Is that weird or what? I wonder if this will become the new 'family/couples' therapy? If you can muster up the time and pretty penny, this place will leave a permanent memory of FUN in your brain for years to come! read more

I went here today for a blogger event. I thought it would be like a real-life game of Clue, and was not disappointed! There were 7 or so of us, the Great Escape Room will do 10 people for a private room so if you have less than 10 in your party, more than likely you'll be combined into one group. We ended up finishing the puzzles in about 54 minutes, and you get 60. Only about 20% of groups will solve them and finish! You get an introduction via CD from a Sherlock Holmes-sounding Brit and a similar soundtrack (I recognized music from the more recent series actually, too) while you are trying to solve the puzzles. I could see this being great for coworkers, groups of friends, bachelorette parties, etc. Reservations aren't required, but are encouraged. It's $28 a person but if you go within the next week or so, for the soft opening, it's $18. Weekdays will also be $23 although as of right now (12/15/14) they're only open Thursdays and weekends. I'd recommend the Great Escape Room, it was a fun time! I hope to go back once they set up a new room, as you can only do the same room once. read more

If you buy your tickets ahead of time online you could end up with strangers in your group and although you are supposed to arrive 15 minutes early you can be up to 15 minutes late with no Penalty. We had six in our group and the other Group of three was late. The room itself was weak, not at all what we would have thought. One thing didn't lead to another and parts didn't work at all. At first I was a little skeptical about taking part but after having the chance to participate I'm extremely glad that I did it! My wife and I were invited by a good friend for a birthday celebration. She had already chosen which escape room she wanted, it was the "Gameroom" experience. We all gathered in the room where the game master explained the rules and expectations. We were given a hour to solve all the necessary puzzles to escape the room. We solved all the puzzles with time to spare! Each room is a different experience with varying levels of difficulty. This could be disastrous outing if you do this with a group of boring people. Please make sure to select a outgoing sociable people for maximum entertainment. I strongly encourage anyone to give it a try. If I enjoyed it anyone can. I plan to go back a try a different room. Since I didn't set this up I'm not too sure about pricing. The staff was awesome, and the actual setup was clean safe and inviting. read more

The escape room was a nice idea. And we had fun but the only issue we had was the staff was very rude. One of the girls in my group was not able to go in the room with us, because online it said two spots were left open and when we got there they said it was all booked up (computer issue). Which we were understanding of. While my friend was waiting in the lobby, the other staff members were openly talking poorly about my group of people not realizing my friend was still sitting in the lobby. My friend knocked on the office door and she said she could hear everything they said since she was still in the lobby. They said they were sorry and would understand if we left them a bad review. Besides that issue our room monitor seemed bored and was texting/ taking selfies of herself most of the time we were in there. But the escape room was fun, it was very difficult and we had a good time. Update: I don't think the girl who was leading our room should of been fired (she messaged me on yelp) . She was helpful and gave us hints during our escape room. Our issue was mostly with the other staff who was talking poorly about us in the office while we were in the game room ( which she wasn't a part of since she was with us in the room). If anything the manager should of messaged me and said sorry or gave us a refund. Not fire the person who didn't really do anything wrong. read more

This is a great concept, and I enjoyed the strangers with whom I shared the experience, but the staff left a good deal to be desired. First, the person taking our information when we arrived seemed confused and unorganized. He held us back from joining with the group with which we should have been scheduled, and then sent us off with another group who didn't want us, and complained to the staff that they had booked a private experience. As a result we were shuffled off to the first group, entering the room late. The room monitor seemed bored and did little to add to the experience. She gave information to the group too readily, helping beyond the hints, as if she wanted us to hurry so she could just be done with it. This entertainment lives and dies by its presentation. The room itself seemed poorly maintained and not clean, and even the door refused to accept the combination when solved, so it became anticlimactic as the lock needed to be opened remotely. And again, the young, bored room monitor was another distraction from making this an engaging experience. read more

I have done about 10 escape rooms now in different cities and states. This one was by far the worst. And ive been here 3 times, each time was the same. The decor of the rooms are kind of bland. The puzzles really don't have much to do with the themes of the rooms. You will spend most of your time searching for a ton of incredibly small pieces, not really thinking logically to solve puzzles. And the staff seems almost aggressively unhelpful. I don't expect them to hold my hand through the whole thing, that wouldn't be much fun. But when my group has been on the same clue for 30 mins, you should give us just a little hint. Being a naturally curious group we asked the room supervisor to explain the puzzles and show us the clues we missed afterward. She clearly did not understand the puzzle. And she was unable to find the pieces even though their she had their locations written down. I kind of think that it wasn't there, that someone may have walked off with it last round and they forgot to check. If you want to do an escape room, especially if it's your first time I would really recommend trying a different one. It's not a totally waste of money but it's definitely the worst one in the area. TLDR: this is a very different kind of escape room. Key points: heavy scavenger hunt aspect, puzzles don't really connect to the theme of the room, there is a monitor IN THE ROOM with you (for most of their rooms, and this wasn't our preference.) Key things they could improve: - clarify the story better-- make the theme connect through to every puzzle - if you must have a person in the room. They should have a script and be a character. Again. Theming for these rooms is really important. - minimize scavenger OR connect it to the theme. Looking for items with a sticker wasn't very 'realistic/inspiring'. One of the great things about most escape rooms is that they transport you to a different time/place and you are meant to feel a level of suspense beyond just the ticking clock. - room felt an odd mix of linear and non linear play. It was hard to identify the best strategy to push forward through. One of our players commented that it was very hard to get a rhythm and keep moving through things. I imagine this would be even harder with a larger group. Things we did like: - game monitor was friendly and helpful (even if we would have preferred to be alone in the room) - lobby and room were decorated well. - one of the 5 puzzles to solve was done REALLY well. Background on our group: For context, we are a group of three that have known each other for a long time. We have played around 15 rooms in the metro Detroit area (and have always escaped). We have only played one room at this location (gameroom). Overall, we probably won't come back to this location until we've cleared every room in Detroit/Ann Arbor and surrounding areas. read more

Lauren, the person who works there, was so much help. She truly made the experience so realistic and she was so good with customer service. Lauren definitely deserves a raise for this experience. Do you consider yourself smart, despite your actions and your words? Do you watch Jeopardy, and shout your answers out loud in a sure tone of voice yet get them wrong every time? Do you watch shows like "Scrubs", "House", or "Grey's Anatomy" and declared yourself a doctor ages ago? Well you've come to the right place to test your mettle. And trust me, your mettle will be tested (if you know what mettle means). You have exactly -1- hour to: -Turn a room upside down without regard for who has to clean it up. -Search for clues to escape the room found in cleverly-hidden places. -Not pull your hair out in frustration. That's it. Chances are you'll probably stand around trying to look smart with one hand on your chin and one under your armpit, but not actually contribute to anything. That's ok, because when you look smart, you become smart. You may say things like: "Hmm..." "Well, that goes there..." "I think I got this figured out!" "Comon guys, work faster!" Unfortunately, despite all your attempts to look smart, your group most likely won't solve the puzzle. Only 20% of people actually do. We didn't, and we were all Asian (because Asians are supposed to be smart). But maybe we aren't really smart. Maybe we aren't really Asian either. Up to you to find out. Kudos to the nice (and cute) girl who was brave enough to be alone in a room with Asian (-looking) people who may or may not know Kung Fu and how to shoot fireballs out of their hands. 5/5 stars? I had such an amazing experience that I had to yelp about it right when I got home! (And seeing as how we're an hour past my bedtime, that's a big deal.) Other yelpers can tell you about the puzzles, so I won't say much. I'm not a fan of puzzles and get frustrated and also bored easily, but the time flew by. We were in the library, and we had 5 puzzles to solve with 5-20ish clues apiece. You need to find the clues, piece them together, and solve the puzzles. You'll also be provided with 3 magnifying glasses (clues) to use at your discretion. Time to toot my group's horn: we finished with 10 mins to spare AND didn't use our last clue! Only 23% of the groups finish in time, so we were pretty stoked. I really just wanted to write this review to rave about Mike and Casey and the services they provided. I consider myself pretty easy-going and easy to please, but I was blown away by the customer service. Setting up the experience was SO EASY. Mike and Casey were great! They were extremely patient as they answered my barrage of emails, and they also answered my emails promptly (not doing so is a personal pet peeve). I had a free voucher to come thanks to a Yelp Elite promo, but I wanted to coordinate a room with friends. We had a group of 11, and the room limit is generally 10, but they will work with you! Also, a friend joined us at the last possible minute (he walked in ticket-less 5 mins before the event), and Mike helped us get him in. They're also both easy to talk to, friendly, and flexible. My group's overall consensus was that we were surprised at how much fun we had and cannot wait to come back!! Well worth the $23 on weekdays and (I think) $25 on weekends. I recommend booking 1-2 weeks early so you can reserve the time you want. read more

Read on, No spoilers below. The LIBRARY room was my 45th escape room played. I've played in SF, LA, Las Vegas, Thailand, China, and Taiwan. If you're into escape games, the best game by far is in SF and you can look through my reviews for you're interested. I enjoyed this game, but I can also see some improvements necessary to make it even more enjoyable. There were too many ways to interpret a clue without enough direction on hand, so you end up wasting time or using hints. A good puzzle is one where there is one clear right answer. We went in with a team of 3, and we were able to break out in a couple minutes past the hour time limit. The game master was nice enough to let us stay a bit later. 2 of us had equal playing experience, and the other was her first time playing. There is no minimum number of people to start a room, but I definitely recommend a group of AT LEAST 6 to play because of the sheer amount of things to look for and solve. I took off my heels in the beginning and went barefoot, and I recommend it. I was even a bit sweaty by the end. On the fun scale, this is probably on the bottom 10% of the games I've played but I've played a LOT. There are way more fun escape rooms out there with multiple trap doors etc, laser beams, etc so if you enjoyed this keep playing other places! I say this because I don't think my friend is excited to keep playing again after this being her first experience. read more

Put your thinking cap on and get ready for some fun. This reminds me of playing a live version of the board game Clue. You work together as a team to solve puzzles to make your escape from a room, we were in the library. I would recommend this for 15 years old and up. Some of the puzzles are complex for anyone younger. I think this place is a great idea for co-workers, families, friends, birthdays. It's definitely something new and fun to check out. I got to attend a soft-open session with several other local bloggers. I love logic puzzles, so this was an awesome real-world translation of the puzzles. We had to search the room for clues split into 4 color groups. Then we had to use the clues to figure out the solution for each color and put them all together to escape the room. We managed to escape at the 54 minute mark (you get at most an hour). We were told that we were the fastest group to finish at the Royal Oak location. And only about 20% of groups are successful in escaping in the hour. After our escape, we had a de-briefing session to talk about the clues and how we did. The Great Escape Room is great for adults and teens. It would make a great adult birthday party, Bachelorette party, date night, or even a moms night out. My 9 year old would probably have fun joining us as a family group, but I don't recommend it for a group of kids at that age. You can book individual slots or up to 12 guests in a private group. My only complaint is that I can't go back until they open a new room. I can't wait to give it another try. read more

Finally herded all of the cats to get a group of friends out to the Great Escape. We had a grand time and I would definitely go back and try the other room. Because of the discount for groups of 10, I filled the room with me and 9 buddies. (What? I'm cheap) Ultimately, this is a lot of people in a small space. With the staff person, there were 11 of us in a pretty small room working different clues at once. It got a little discordant. It was super fun, but I'd like to try again with a smaller group so that we can solve more things per person. So that's my tip - just pay full price and hope you get to play with fewer people. read more

With 3 minutes to spare, we finished the mysteries and riddles and escaped! I'd recommend this - and if you're like me, take some friends who are a bit outgoing. Went as a part of a birthday party. We ended up being late, due to something we couldn't control. All of us thought that yeah- it sucks to be 20 mins late, but surely we could still have something out of an hour and a half of a pre-paid experience? No. No we couldn't. Staff was basically gleeful in refusing to do anything. Could we just start, and you cut experience short when the time comes? No. Could we have money back? No. Part of the money back? No. There's the birthday girl, and we still have a ton of time that was already paid for, anything you can do for us at all? Only sarcasm for an answer. He literally said something like "do you want fireworks or a dance party or something?" As far as I understand, the experience itself is supposed to be guided by the staff. I'd hate to spend time with someone so condescending. Apparently there's many of these escape rooms around nowadays. Just pick one where they know how to talk to other humans. The Great Escape Room was very easy to find. Its central location in downtown Royal Oak makes it the perfect activity to do before or after dinner, shopping, or drinks. It was perfect for a variety of different groups, too. We went during a bachelorette party. It's in the basement of a larger office building and your first challenge is finding the key code to enter the building in your confirmation email. There were several different rooms all with varying degrees of ability. I appreciate that they also rated the rooms based on puzzle solving needed and scavenger skills needed. Our room, the Library, was definitely different than other escape rooms I've been in. There were not any magnetic clues like in other escape rooms I've been to, but more than involved locks and codes and keys. The room was sparsely decorated which made it much easier to find clues as there was very little on the walls. Did it look like a library? I'd have to say no. I was expecting lots of books, wallpaper, ect. It was easy to sign in and sign their forms when we arrived. The staff was very friendly and our assigned staff member, Andrew, was great at explaining the room and giving us our three clues as we went. While it was different than the other rooms I've experiences elsewhere, it was a lot of fun and provided the perfect amount of challenge for my group. read more
