Here visiting for work, so my colleague and I decided to come here for lunch. I had the catfish and she had the gyro. The food was so ooo delicious! The fish was fresh and seasoned very well and cooked in cornmeal (southern style). The lamb in the gyro was also seasoned well. The waitress Britany was exceptional! She deserves employee of the month! This should be on your list of eating establishments if you are in the area! read more

This was a decent spot to stop for lunch on our drive down 64. They seem to be understaffed at the moment but the employees were polite and quick on their feet. I had a grilled chicken salad and my husband had the cowboy chicken sandwich. I enjoyed my salad. My husband's fries were very good. He said his sandwich was "fine" and further said not bad but not exceptional. After tax and tip, it all came to about $25. We would stop here again on this drive. read more

We stopped here on our way to a Indianapolis to watch our granddaughter compete in volleyball national championship. I had the Monte Cristo sandwich and chicken soup. I took half of the sandwich to go. My husband had an omelet with hash browns and toast. We both enjoyed our meals and the service was great. We were also offered to go drinks. Stopped here just passing through town. Saw this had the best reviews in town.. when we arrived, we weren't super impressed by the outwardly appearance. It was cute in the inside, but the booths were really old and covered in duct tape on the seats. There was a weird smell in the restaurant that we just couldn't shake. I'm not sure if it was a chemical smell from bleach or another smell, but it was just unpleasant. The food was in big portions and it was pretty good - prices were pretty normal - nothing to complain about for the food!! The ketchup bottle on our table was super greasy. There may be a little more upkeep needed on these little things, but the food was just fine! Felt like a small town diner. read more

We stopped by on our way to St Louis and at first were a little hesitant because the parking lot was empty. This is truly a hidden gem! So so good. I had a chicken ranch wrap and it was soooooo amazing. The lady in the restaurant was super nice to us and our baby. I am not sure about prices in the rest of Illinois, but we ate as kings (2 adults and a kid) and our bill ended up being $25. read more

Best waffle and all day breakfast. When traveling from Louisville Kentucky to St louis Missouri we needed food. Didn't want another chain, but didn't want a big risk either. Visible from the interstate, THE GRILLE is under construction and you drive past two other restaurants on the same road. It has been other businesses before as evidenced by the cluttered drive thru window they now use for storageand the sign in the sky for "tom's eatery" Its a small-ish restaraunts that could seat 100 guests and to it's credit has a full view into the very clean kitchen. A small tube tv above the door, and worn-in diner style booths, along with the "hi y'all" you hear when you step in give the place warmth. It is clean and uncluttered inside despite walking past current construction materials to get to the front door. We were greeted promptly by a waitress who took our drink order and let us know another waitress would be our server. Almost instantly our server arrived with our drinks, a smile, and the ipad she used to take our order. The online (yelp) menu lists breakfast until noon. I was pleasantly informed that breakfast was all day. I ordered french toast, and a waffle while Lisa ordered "hot beef". After I laughed in a childish manner I learned that "hot beef" is an open faced roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy and a salad. I asked to have everything brought out as it was ready. We were on the road and not concerned with serving both of us at the same time we just wanted to eat and get back to our road trip. The salad and waffle came out at the same time. The salad appeared fresh and the waffle was warm and inviting. With crisp sections and soft centers this waffle filled the plate and was soon smothered in butter from the ample soft-sided packets that were provided. Next the warm syrup was poured over filling all the cavities of buttery goodness. The waffle was thick....almost belgian but not quite. The french toast arrived and I knew it was already in a fight for second place. More butter was delivered with the french toast and they were piled high with butter and syrup between ever slice. Three fluffy egg coated titans of toast were soon gone too. They were delicious but I knew they were no match for the waffle. The french toast was incredible, but the waffle brought back the goodness and simplicity of the childhood waffles mom let me enjoy...but also somehow elevated as my tastebuds have over the years. A side of hush puppies were also ordered and they were good. Bright yellow centers golden brown outer crust without being greasy. The hot beef was brought out and it was described as "ok....good....not great...but good" visually it was appealing. It looked like a meal that someone chose over country fried steak. Gravy was warm over the meat and mashed potatoes and at no time did the thought of it coming from a can creep into my head. Quickly the "hot beef" he he he-sorry was categorized as an "also ran" when compared to the hush puppies that we quit eating three times before we decided we shouldn't eat anymore, the french toast that took me by surprise, and that amazing waffle creation. Im sure the construction will be complete soon and the signage will be updated but I hope the food doesn't change before we make it back. read more

When is comes to picking a restaurant it really comes down to how was the food and service everything else is fluff. The building was a former fast food restaurant converted to a sit down restaurant. A+ for recycling, It looks a little rundown on the outside and you might wonder if it's open if your early for lunch like we were. The burger that I had was top notch. The fries were made with perfection. The mozzarella sticks were fabulous. The service was excellent. It had a diner feel. The waitress knew most of the customers by name. read more

This is a great breakfast place! They always get the poached eggs just right. The Greek salad with grilled chicken and balsamic dressing is a great lunch. This place is a kind of diamond in the rough. It's on a non-descript street right off of the highway. At first I wasn't even sure if the place was open for business or not. It was obviously recently renovated from some old fast food place and there was construction al around it. Inside though, the place had a great small town diner atmosphere. They have fresh made pies and soup. They serve both breakfast and lunch, and their food is genuinely good food. The food, service, and prices were all great. This was our first visit. We both ordered burgers and they were excellent. The Patty Melt came with Taco Soup and a serving of sour cream. Very tasty without trying too hard to be Mexican. Service was slow for us non-regulars - especially since ours was one of 4 tables for lunch. Burgers were over cooked, but not dry. Bacon on the burger could have come from the Kroger down the street. Difficult to get in & out of the area due to the truck traffic & ill-timed lights. Skip this place & the Mount Vernon exit if you can. read more

Enterprising individuals buy a defunct chain restaurant building in a sea of chain restaurants and follow their dream of owning an independent cafe. Just the type of business we try to find and support. Alas, being generous, the food was yuck. Her breakfast plate: Over easy eggs came greasy and with hard yolks. Hash browns were greasy and over cooked. Cold, unmelted margarine on cold toast. His dinner plate: Barely warm, and bland chicken-fried steak. Barely warm mashed potatoes that were barely mashed. Cold, bland, and watery green beans. Wait staff was polite but inattentive. Inside was reasonably clean but by no means spotless. The outside appears to be a cacophony of half-finished remodeling projects. This is a dream that hasn't found traction and feels stalled. read more
