Now, they are not found along a major road or…read morehighway, so it's no wonder it took me so long to discover them, but if you live in McMinnville or thereabouts, they are worth a couple minutes drive out into the "country" part of McMinnville. I have taken to stopping here first on my weekly shopping trips. I try to purchase the majority of my produce at Draper Farms, then supplement as needed at the standard grocery store. I live pretty rurally, so I generally don't make it into town for the Thursday farmer's market like I wish I could. Draper Farms is the perfect alternative that I can hit Saturday, Sunday, or any day of the week that is convenient. Offerings cycle with the seasons, but they are growing lots of great stuff here, and there is always an excellent variety of options. A few of my favorites are their strawberries, radishes, corn, leeks, collards, and herbs. No matter the time of year they will have some sort of lettuce, cabbage, spinach, or other greens. I recently grabbed some divine kiwi berries, finished in a single day, and have dreamed of them since. For autumn, they offer an array of pumpkin varieties for 30 cents a pound which is the least I've seen anywhere, and much prettier than what you can find at a grocery store. They also had fall décor, including stunning glass gem corn. There is even a separate fresh cut flower stand! They accept cash, check or Venmo (the latter is such an appreciated option, yay!). They have some bags available, though you should bring your own if you can. Prices are generally less than the grocery store, and for much higher quality produce! There is a good amount of parking. They also offer a CSA.

I'm so glad I did as I had a much better experience this go around! Not only did we get a TON of delicious, perfectly ripe berries, but decided to enjoy lunch on the little patio of the farm store. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with blueberry spread and it was fabulous. We also got the Dubai chocolate strawberries for dessert and WOW! Delicious. My son is fixated on blueberries, so he happily sat on the grass and picked berries from the low hanging bushes while the rest of us focused on the marionberries. The highlight for my son is that the family that owns this farm are serious Oregon Ducks fans, so they get bonus points from him. Compared to other farms, the pickings were a little slim, but the folks are very nice.

There was only about 3 people already picking and while we were there probably only 10 other people came so there was plenty of space to pick with out people crowding you! There were 2 different kinds of blueberries although we only picked 1 kind, but gave a nice variety between sweet and tart. The owner was very nice and had buckets lined with bags all ready for us so we could just pick into the bucket and take out the bag when done and ready to take home. You also cannot beat the price at $1.75 a pound! I believe we looked at the organic farm in Portland and it was about $3.50 a pound and I am sure a lot more crowded. Ever on the lookout for stranger and rarer herbs and plants, I reached out to local grower Van…read moreHevelingen to see if I could purchase direct from them. They let me know they were wholesale only (though they do sell direct to the public at some farmers markets and their ilk), however they were super nice and suggested I check out Chehelam Flats Farm Market as they stock Van Hevelingen's plants for the spring and summer. Chehelam Flats is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10-5, so when I was in the area last weekend, I excitedly made my way there. They have a couple parking spaces on the side of their building, and as I exited my car, I noticed all their fields of lavender! I had not known that was a big part of this market, but goodness, I sure do love me some lavender. I was greeted by the lovely proprietress who let me know their lavender will be in bloom late June to July, and that they will offer bunches pre-cut or you can cut your own. She was also quick to suggest local businesses and events as I am new to the area and was just all around so kind and charming! Back to the plants, I zeroed in on all the fun and unusual herbs, and quickly had a growing box (okay, two!) of goodies: sweet cicely, variegated lemon balm, variegated society garlic, French sorrel, licorice sweet flag, pink rosemary, eau de cologne mint, yerba Buena, and a Chinese chrysanthemum. They also have plenty more traditional herb offerings, native plants as well as some flowers, not to mention I don't even know how many lavender plants in a variety of sizes. Inside, there were some houseplants, along with many kitchen and home goods: candles, soap and other bath and body items, tea towels, even treats like pate de fruit (a favorite!). They had gorgeous wooden pieces included a rolling pin that a totally fell in love with. You could put together such a lovely gift here! The whole area was just gorgeous and while you should absolutely visit when you can take advantage of fresh lavender, I had a wonderful experience without it. They will also have other plants like tomatoes as the weather warms. I cannot wait to return.

We stopped to pick some fresh peaches at #bellsorchard and surprisingly ran into the owner Loyd who gave us a tip on how to identify the ripe peaches. He was so helpful and friendly. Also sampled a few varieties of the peaches Redhaven , Frost, and Starfire which were so sweet and juicy. They grow a wide variety of other peaches specifically for canning, and baking. Also apples, pears and blueberries. Very family oriented!

The pavilion offered electric, water and a mini fridge along with a great kitchen prep space as well as tables and chairs for entertainment. The indoor/outdoor feel was exactly what I envisioned for the day. The kids enjoyed picking apples and then running around the open spaces. The pavilion allowed for us not to stress about weather, as it would be perfect for a rainy or hot day, thankfully, we had a perfect fall day.
