The Holy Grail of thrift shopping in Houston is without question - The Guild Shop. It has a number of rooms filled with interesting items in addition to a large outside area with outdoor items. The pricing might be a little high for my thriftiness, but there is always a line waiting for the doors to open. This store is nothing more than a place for the upper class to make themselves feel trendy by shopping in a "thrift" store. This place would better serve both the community and the charity behind it by making the items more of a bargain instead of the over priced yard sale that it currently is. Too expensive for a thrift shop. You are better off searching craigslist for what you really want. Lord knows you will find it quicker on cl too. Not many folks to help you out throughout the store but plenty of people at the front to help take your payment. The signage is horrible leading to the outside display area. Wow is all I can really say about this place! You can find some really great finds here, for a very reasonable price. Weekends are probably the best time to go, although it does get a bit busy Saturday mornings. Jewelry is a MUST here! The Guild Shop is one of the nicest thrift stores in the downtown/Montrose area. My wife and I love stopping in on occasion to see what new hidden treasures we may find. We have found Wilton Armetale serving pieces, Lenox Christmas China, and marble coasters that we purchased. However, it is always interesting to look at the furniture, stemware, china, collectibles, and high quality clothes all at fairly reasonable prices. We have on occasion found something we wanted but decided the price at the time was more than we wanted to pay so we checked back later and got it at a cheaper price a month or two later. It should be noted that the price tags on the items have multiple prices and dates so that you can know hiw much the item costs today and will cost in the future. The Guild Shop accepts both donations and consignments (you can potentially make a little money while cleaning out your closet or house). If you enjoy thrift stores and/or collecting you should definitely check the Guild Shop out. read more

If you shop around enough, I'm sure you can find a good deal here. The crowd is a bit more upper scale so it isn't shocking that the items are a little fancier compared to a "typical" consignment shop. Needless to say, I didn't quite fit in. However, lots of their items were in great condition and a lot of the furniture seemed like quality and more importantly, unique products. There were several Coach and Dooney & Burke bags in good condition under $50 if you're into that sort of thing. Good grief, this place was packed for a Thursday morning. I was taken aback at the number of shoppers squeezed into this store. It took me a while to figure out the lay of the land. The household consignment section is enormous but very crowded. The clothing section had racks so crammed full of things that it was hard to browse. I am a treasure hunter and for that reason I Use to love going shopping at The Guild Shop in Houston, alas, not anymore. Yesterday I found a wonderful Lladro Clown head that I gleefully purchased for my husband's 60th birthday. On the item tag it said "three pieces" I assumed that meant The clown's head as 1. the box as 2. And the wooden stand that is always shown as part of the piece, "ie" the head sits on as 3. Upon returning home,I eagerly opened the box containing my husband's gift only to discover the stand was not in there. When I spoke to the manager "Desmond" inquiring where the stand was??? he said "there wasn't one." I then asked what then was the third item listed on the tag, and he said "there must not be a third item, it was a mistake." When I said I had been misled and that without a stand I no longer wanted the clowns head, I was told the stores policy was "no returns". When I said "even though the tag said 3 pieces, when in fact there were only two? He said "it was a mistake, and what did I expect when The Guild Shop is run by volunteers". What I expect is to receive what is indicated on the item tag I purchased. AND If there has been a human error by a "volunteer " at The Guild Shop, to be able to return the item to the store. My husband is a perfectionist I know he will not like the clowns head without the stand. And yes, I am well aware of the stores return policy and I know some of the proceeds go to helping elderly people which is why I have shopped at The a Guild for years, but COME ON this is just not right. So folks, if you want to go shopping at a place that offers good deals and helps others? The Guild is no longer the place. :-(! read more

I love this place and miss it weekly. The hours are a little tough, but it is completely worth a trip! The price tags show the curent price, and what the price will drop to the next week and the week after. This is as much gambling as I'm comfortable with. The prices drop quickly, so it's fun to see what you can pick up for a good deal! The housewares and random small furniture pieces are the best bets. I never got into rifling through the clothes... After posting the previous update, my checks have been mailed, received, and deposited. I also was sent a photocopy of my husband's checks, invoice information detailing which items had been sold and at what rate, and a personal letter from the director explaining all included items.Perhaps next time it won't take complete frustration to see the cogs of the system in progress, especially after providing my updated information over the phone. Overall, I've been reasonably satisfied with the prompt response to this situation, and hope that, in light of my experience, some adjustments might be made to returned check procedures down the line for future consignors. read more

I like this new clothes store they opened the next door from my business. I love the style they propose and the quality of materials is amazing. I'm absolutely in love with the colors they offer and they have new collections every week. This is the neatest thrift shop. Tons of fun odds and ends & collectibles. Big selection of furniture and outdoor items. Large jewelry section. Gets crowded b/c I think they are a favorite of a lot of Houstonians but it adds to the fun. Parking is a problem so be patient and park on a side street if necessary, just watch for the no parking signs. I've always found a spot. Have fun. read more

This place is hit or miss, I have been both a customer and a consignor. One of the things that aggravates me about the consigning process, is if you bring them a multi piece set and their staff mishandles it and lose some pieces, then they will just re-mark it with the number of pieces they have found and try to sell it that way. Then they will not take any kind of responsibility for it. Sometimes I think they're staff do not pay attention to the description that is actually marked on the consignment sheet by the consignors...otherwise, with the successful consignments, they will ask a good price for the consignor but also keep it as a great value for the customer. read more

CONSIGNORS BEWARE!!!! My husband and I consigned some items there. One was a very nice painting. We went back into the shop to see what kind of a price they put on the painting. We were shocked, there was another consignors number on our painting. They seemed to be very upset when they got caught putting another consignors number on our painting. It was taken down immediately and they put our consignor number on it. But just recently, we consigned some more items and we went back into the shop to once again see what price they put on our items. This time they were NO WHERE to be found. We contacted the shop manager. She was very cooperative and said that our contract that we entered our items on was not in their system. She didn't believe us and wanted to know if we had a copy of our contract OH YES we did and sent it over to her. If we did not have a copy of our contract we would never have any proof that we even brought anything in the shop. She said she looked all over the store and there was no success. in finding the items that we brought in there. Not only does your property go missing- they do not even enter your items into the data base. i.e. you do not have any proof you brought anything in there if you do not keep a copy of your contract. There are some serious issues going on with this shop. They need to have an outside auditor come there and audit their books. There are some big time red flags going up in that shop. Needless to say, we will never take anything back in there again. read more

This place is awful for consigners. They have very strict rules which I would have no problem with except that they change the rules constantly. You absolutely cannot rely on them. You will completely waste your time getting stuff together and driving over there only to find that they decided not to take that particular stuff that particular day. What's more the volunteer staff are not very helpful or friendly if you do manage to consign. There are way better places consign. read more

What's going on at the Guild Shop with prices? They have a great mix of stuff old and new, but yesterday I found a trash can priced at $12.00 that's $15 at Bed Bath and Beyond. The same with a glass storage canister -- only this time it was MORE than at BBB. You can find some cool things here and there that're conceivably worth as much used as new -- Fiesta stoneware, for example -- but whoever oversees pricing, you should reconsider what you're doing. Items produced recently or currently stocked in stores should be priced much lower. read more

This place basically rocks my world. The picture Jon S. posted of the fireman clown with dustpan gives you a primo example of the things you'll find here. My husband comes home with numerous strange things every time we go to the Guild Shop. He used to complain about vintage shopping and now he's the one leaving the stores all giddy with a bagful of random. One time, he got a tiki god. Another time, a harpoon. I thought it was a theatrical antique harpoon, but the tip was metal... and kinda sharp. A lot of their items here tend to be higher end, and the prices reflect that. For example, they have a few vintage Rolex watches... priced at about $500, which is still something of a bargain. Also, I believe that for some clothing items such as belts, they will only accept brand name designers. FYI, the prices change depending on how long an item has been in the store. Be sure to check the tag for price AND DATE to see if there is a discount. read more

OK - they do have some good stuff, at least what manages to get on the floor! I know for a fact, that there is at least one "Picker" volunteering there and one antique store owner. They get all the stuff they want before it even gets to the flor. Not long a go, I was in there and the two ladies behind the jewelry counter were helping three customers standing next to me and one of the volunteers, t ook a strand of pearls out of the tray, held it up, IN FRONT OF ALL OF US, and in an undertone (but in my direction so I heard her clear as day) said, "I think htese are real." the other lady agreed and the first one slipped them into her pocket. RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF US. The word is that they all do this and that we, the customers, are lucky if we even see half the St. John Knits and Chanel etc that come though the doors before the volunteers have picked them clean. So, while I go in every now and then, their prices are high and the selection in some areas just not good. Meh! read more

Save your donations for a charity that actually cares and helps people in need. The Guild Shop lines the pockets of professional consigners (or pickers as they are known in the business) and their paid staff. Just visit the shop on a consignment day and you will see for yourself. I visited the shop in hopes of donating a deceased relatives estate...I was ignored by a bunch of yappy volunteers behind the consignment counter and was told that I could ONLY speak with the shop manager. Needless to say I waited 20 minutes to speak to her as she sat behind a glass window seemingly doing some paperwork. When I asked yet again who could help me set up a donation pickup I was told "only her" but she was too busy because they were getting ready for a fashion show! The volunteers continued to fall over all of the consigners who we busy bringing their treasues and I left the shop. I called and left numerous messages to try to set up a donation pick up which were never returned. Upon doing some further research (since the shop had come recommended by several friends) I discovered that although the shop claims to be staffed by volunteers it actually has a paid staff and the shop manager makes a six figure salary! Several of the volunteers shared this wih me....shocking to say the least. They say that most of volunteers work there so that they can have unlimited consignment privlidges. Several volunteers that I asked couldn't even tell me what charity the proceeds from the shop went to other than an "elder day care center". It was really a horrible experience. I had hoped to help others and instead I was completely ignored. Take your stuff to Goodwill...they are happy to have it. PS: The Guild Shop could have made a pretty penny off the donation of this complete apartment had they had just called back........ read more

This place is super crowded with all sorts of knick-knacks from lamps without shades to candlesticks to paintings and chairs and clothes and vases and jewelry. When I stopped by for the first time, the biggest crowd was around the jewelry, so that must be where it's at. We found a heavy silver candelabra for $75 and a wooden picture for $135--still expensive. It seems The Guild Shop would take anything because there are old crusty things marked for sale. If you have a good eye and like hunting for treasure, this place is for you--one man's junk is another man's jackpot--but the problem for me is that being sight-impaired, this place just felt like a musty, overcrowded secondhand store. Picking through old stuff can be tiresome, but I can understand how it might be someone's hobby. It's a good place if you have an eye for home decor or jewelry fashion and can reupholster or fix things up to fit accordingly to your taste and home or wardrobe. The Guild Shop opens at odd hours (closes early), so I'd advise finding which days they restock their inventory and showing up bright and early to get first pickin's. read more

I can't say enough nice things about the Guild - great place to shop and an even better place to consign! The staff is always very gracious and helpful and Vera is a gem! The first time I went in she showed me how to do the paperwork, walked me through all the steps, and even helped prepped my clothes, which had become a bit jumbled from being in the car. I love this shop! The volunteers who staff it are friendly and helpful. The items are always changing. Sometimes, if you're lucky, you will find the perfect item at an brag-worthy price! My friend found 8 Ethan Alllen swivel chairs for under $200! A lot of their items do need a little love, but it is well worth the trip! Their jewelry display is extensive. Great selection that changes every day, and extremely well organized and clean compared to most antique/consignment shops. It was very crowded, but I think that is normal for a Saturday. We will see if this review gets deleted also. I must say that I do like the guild shop and have shopped there for years. While there last week I made an offer on a sofa and the lady that I was told would make the decision would call me back the next day which she did around 3pm Friday. I made an offer on a sofa (it never hurts to ask) and she agreed to my offer with two stipulations. First, I had to come in the next day and pay for the item and that a man named Jim would reprice the item for me to the price I offered and second if they sold it before I got there that was just the luck of the draw. My wife and I traveled in from Sugar Land on Sat morning and waited for Jim who was do in at 11 am. When he arrived and I got a chance to talk to him he said that he did not care what the other lady had told me that this was a brand new deal. I mentioned what was wrong with the sofa and what needed to be fixed to make it usable. He said that was not enough to authorize the markdown. Now remember that because it is important. He kept asking me if there was anything more I could tell him that might be wrong with it. Well to make a long story shorter, Jim asked the manager and came back and said they would not honor the price I was given the day before. Needless to say I was quite angry. In the state of Texas a verbal agreement/contract is as enforceable as a written one. I was not trying to pull a fast one or get around any store policy. I had just made an offer and that offer had been accepted. It is as simple as that. I left the story as I heard my self raising my voice and I did not want to make a big scene. When I arrived home I called and asked to talk with the manager, who as it turned out was unavailable at that time. The person took the message and a little while later the manager called me. I explained what had happened and she was indifferent to the circumstances and quoted store policy several times. She was very civil but unwilling to budge an inch. I explained that I had a agreement with them and she could not have cared less. She said she wanted to talk to the person who had accepted my offer, (I do not think she believed me even though there were several of her employees involved) and would contact me on Monday (today). Well guess what happened. As expected she did not keep her commitment to call me today. As I said I like to shop there and the people who work there are very nice, but the caviler way they handle their business does not live up to the standards of the Church Of St. John The Divine which is their parent organization. Having spent many years of retirement in retail I fully understand the commitment of the verbal contract with a customer. If an employee makes a mistake and makes a commitment to a customer, the store is required to honor that agreement as long as it is not illegal. It is clear that the Guild Shop does not adhere to those ethics or legal requirements and that makes me sad because they do good charity work for which I solute them. read more
