I have been going to the guild for over 15 years to discover what I do not need and what I could not imagine, but truly love. I would give 5 stars to this place but have overheard a few of their volunteer staff make racist comments. Thankfully it is not a majority of the staff. One of my great aunts used to shop at the Guild Shop weekly. This was one of her favorite resale shops along her weekly tour of resale shops. Dependent on the time of day you stop by here, you'll notice similar ladies, as well. Dressed up with heels, a hat, and usually a cute little purse on their forearm. All in their eighties and on a mission to find the be all, end all "super-find" of the day. It's best to step aside, as I mentioned, they're on a mission and aren't to be messed with. After being drug here countless times as a young child (think "resale shop crawl" without the alcohol), The Guild Shop grew on me. It is one of the best resale shops for furniture and quality knick-knacks. It does have a few flaws, but they're just enough to add...character. I mentioned the older lady brigade, but this goes for most of the regulars that resale shop: passive aggressive crazies. For example, the last time I was here, a person near me was looking at some furniture. She moved a trunk and wound up barricading me into a maze of furniture before looking at me, then immediately walking away. Another character building flaw are their hours. They essentially keep strict banker's hours. They close at 4:30 (make that 3:30 nowadays - 2015) on weekdays, and are only open a few hours on Saturday. It's a little inconvenient, but lends for a very entertaining lunch hour. Especially if you have to tell your boss/staff that you are late because you were trapped in a furniture jungle. read more

Oh, how I love a bargain! I have been a true bargain shopper since I could spend money. One of my all time favorite places to go is the Guild Shop. I have a theory, it your are looking for a particular item, it will end up at the Guild Shop. They have everything from furniture to clothes and china, oh my... I find that the prices are fair but not dirt cheap. If you are antsy about a price you can wait until the price drops, about each month it is there, the price is lowered. If the item is still there after 30 days from the lowest price, it becomes 50% off the lowest price. This shop takes time and concentration when attempting to find those special items and is not a store for those beginner bargain shoppers. So wander in when you have time to shop and get blown away by what treasures you will come across. read more

I have to admit that my thrift-ing revolves around books so I am not a huge fan of the Guild Shop. That said, where do you think I went when I wanted to buy my girlfriend a small piece of jewelry? or found our $15 or less (by mutual agreement) christmas present? or just dig around kitchy kitchen knick-knacks? One morning my husband and I were on a gallery crawl in the Montrose and stumbled across this little gem. We went in to look for artwork, but found a treasure trove of eclectic of housewares, jewelery, knick knacks, lamps, furniture, clothing, purses and shoes instead. (They actually do carry artwork, but funky 60's/70's oil paintings aren't really our style.) After cruising the aisles for an hour, we left with a wooden statue, a vintage sweater for me, and a set of red wine glasses. Totally random and all very cool. But actually one of the best things about this store isn't the merchandise; it's the consignment policy. The Guild offers a 60/40 split. You get 60% of the sales price and the remaining 40% goes to support the St. John the Divine Charity. So you get to offload stuff you don't need anymore, make some $$ and feel good about supporting a charity. Plus - you don't even have to come in to pick up your check. They mail your profit to you once a month. That's a win-win in my book! read more

I've been consigning and buying from the Guild since I discovered it in 2012. I take things in sporadically and to date have made about $1600. Yes! My best selling items were jewelry and antique knick knacks. To dispute some of the negative comments on here, I would offer that the Guild is very specific in their monthly newsletter as to what they're taking (or not) that month. Look at the newsletter and the schedule and rarely will there be any surprises. I think the ladies do a great job there. As a regular I am greeted warmly. The trick is to get out of there and not buy anything, which rarely happens! Lots of great finds from the River Oaks clientele who consign there. I'm a fan!! read more

I. Love. The Guild Shop. I've been a resale shop prowler since my early teens - what can I say, I love cheap shit. I stumbled across this place originally looking for some inconsequential stuff for my room, and it was love at first sight. I have never seen so much cool old stuff packed into a building before - this place is massive, and it's wall-to-wall with any possible thing you could want to put in your house. I've come home from The Guild with tons of stuff, from artwork to jewelry (xmas gift), some awesome kitschy stuff for my bookshelf and more. And the selection changes weekly! Seriously, one of the coolest little shops in Houston - just be sure to come early. read more

Such a fun place to shop for home goods! You can find all sorts of old china, glass ware, kitchen items, tables, cabinets, dressers, lamps, musical instruments, outdoor furniture and jewelry. Make sure you make it to all the rooms. We discovered rooms on our second trip that we had not idea were there on the first trip! The prices go down the longer it is in the store so pay attention to the tag and the date. If the price goes down tomorrow you may want to risk coming back the next day to see if it is still there. You can find great deals and the inventory turns over pretty fast! We came back two weeks after our first visit and I would say about half of the furniture was new. I would check this place out before buying any new furniture. This is a great place to find accessories for your house. Parking is an issue, they have a small lot but everyone brings their huge vehicles to grab furniture. Be prepared to drive around a little. Totally worth the parking issues! read more

The Guild Shop has an amazing selection of goods: decorative, kitchenware, accessories, clothes, jewelry, and furniture. I recently visited a few other thrift stores in the Westheimer & Dunlavy area, and found myself visiting Guild Shop again. Although a bit cramped for the wide selection of goods, Guild Shop has a high quality selection. Another great quality of Guild Shop is their pricing system. I recently bought a beautiful table vase made in Japan for only $3. The sticker price said $15, but Guild Shop has a system where the price is discounted every month it sits on the shelf. My friend also found 4 Pyrex beakers for only $4.50! Again, I really love the selection and pricing system of this thrift store. I will be sure to continue shopping here in the future! read more

If you're a hipster looking for ironic art or knock knacks this is THE place. They also have a lot of vintage costume jewelry and furniture. The furniture is a mix of 80s cast offs and genuine antiques so it's hit or miss. They have a small clothing section and a decent mix of designer accessories and handbags. I got a kick ass eel skin clutch here last year. Like all the upscale charity shops the volunteer staff is slower than molasses on cold winter's day, so give yourself plenty of time. read more

Excellent location for a good treasure hunt in Houston. Like others have noted, the prices are high, but they decrease by date if they go unpurchased for a set period of time. Example, I found a beautiful, weird-yet-lovely, framed art print that was marked $79 (high by any flea market standard). Price dropped to $59 after 3 weeks, then $39 after a couple more, so that was much more stomachable than the original price. There are several rooms and everything is organized well. Also nice to note, the shoppers here are friendly and not elbowing you to make their way to the best items. It has more of a feeling of "everyone's looking for something different" so there didn't seem to be any rude people to deal with. A+ read more

DESIGNER CLOTHING CONSIGNMENT REVIEW ONLY: Been shopping & visiting The Guild for 2 decades. Today, spoke w The Guild rep for designer consignment, V3r^, via phone. She asked, "What designers do you have?" I attempted to answer. She interrupted after I stated the 2nd name (Malandrino) to tell me that my pieces were not high-end designers; that Malandrino is not a consignment level designer... She didn't know the piece is from Malandrino's Showroom 2022. Moreover, she then added, that I can instead of consign, donate, ALL of my pieces. Respectfully, I named a few more designers that I was offering: Chanel, Valentino, Mariegelo, Fendi, Escaille, Escada, Rick Owens. She said, "Well bring them in..." By then, her blatant & early in the conversation, condescension informed me that she did not intend to good-faith consign. The Guild has not, in my 20 year experience, ever had couture, as this elder's disregarding conjecture suggested. Couture pieces are not typically resold or consigned, for that matter; They are internally traded/showcased. An expert in the arena would know this, & interview according to the level of design historically in their possession. At best, she might see something from an estate sale that was accidentally released to The Guild. Regardless, the lady's misplaced arrogance, it was costly, unnecessary, revealing of a lack of expertise, & offensive. She told me that's not what people want (the designers above). These were 18 showroom pieces from the above named designers, all within the last two seasons in mint "trunk" condition for the pending Fall season. Surely, The Guild might not be interested, but I was sharply disregarded, not for the clothing but for V3r^'s subjective personal narrative of a stranger, rather than the purpose of the contact: To review items' fair consignment potential. I was able to sell them, including the Malandrino (all but 2 pces) in one contract today, but wanted to report here for those who might be looking to consign. You might have to go outside of Houston, as the Guild is Highly Regarded but my experience evidences questionable contracting. NYC is preferred, but for Texas, Austin markets might be a more credible option if this is representative of the Houston sources. For sure, it is well advised to remain clear of contracting w V3r^ at The Guild. Seek reasonable, professional, & upstanding exchanges, or internally trade. No one should be condescending, regardless of the transaction. read more

I love the jewelry here. I have bought so many fun vintage crystal necklaces at very reasonable prices. The furniture can be fun to search through, but it's not very well organized and often it is difficult to see items that you may be interested in. I have made out with dozens of cute items from the Guild Shop. Their selection of furniture, household items and jewelery is amazing! The best thing is that it is constantly changing inventory. I make it a point to go every couple of weeks, so that I don't miss out of somethign amazing. Soemtimes, I run into items that I didn't get before due to price that are now on sale. The pricing system is quite helpful and fair for the condition of the items. I wish I had a bigger apartment so I could buy more furniture from here. You will find in abundance: vintage fans (that still work), fancy glassware (to rival Anvil's cocktail ware), cool chairs, vintage filing cabinets. read more

The Guild Shop is what you would get if you took all of your grandmother's knick-knacks and put them in a giant store with all of her friends' knick-knacks, and sold them for moderate prices. And since grandmothers often have amazing stuff, this is a very good thing! This place is a little pricier than Sand Dollar or Value Village thrift shops, but you're paying for quality here. The smell that typically hangs over the low-end thrift stores is absent here. The furniture is in good condition, and the clothes look clean, stain-free, and high quality. The jewelry selection is really good and reasonably-priced. I was in Santa Fe, NM and couldn't wait to get back to Houston to buy the gorgeous Native American pieces in their jewelry dept at much less price point. This place prays on the people who park in their parking lot. We are from out of town and parked here seeing a sign on the fence that said they would tow in that spot if you parked there so we parked in a spot with NO sign; and ate breakfast at the establishment literally in the same parking lot and upon leaving our car was being towed. This company is unethical and has a partnership with the tow truck company who just pray on innocent people. There were MULTIPLE people getting towed at one time. And the guy kept going around and around looking for his next victim. The security guard didn't care at all and had no empathy that we were out of town and their signs were not visible in all spots. And to make matters worse, after breakfast our plan was to go shop from this company. But I will NEVER spend a dime in this store. They probably only make their money from praying on the victims they tow. We were only parked for less than 30 mins and they made $190 off us. Stay far far away from this joke of a place. read more

I was excited to find the perfect piece of furniture here, but the horrid customer service I got from the woman working the cash register made me leave without purchasing anything. She was already in a bad mood she called me to her register, and she told me I couldn't buy the thing I brought to her because it didn't have a tag. She started to put it behind her, and I asked how I could get a price. She rolled her eyes and walked away without saying anything to me. She then paged for someone from furniture to come up and give a price. When she came back to me, she told me I was in the way and needed to go to the end of the counter. I waited there for a long time. Another woman in a red apron came up to apologize to me, but after all that waiting without someone giving me a price and being treated poorly by the cashier, I left the furniture behind. I'm shocked The Guild would have someone so mean working/volunteering for them. I understand that retail can be difficult, but I was disappointed with the cashier's immediate rotten attitude. I hope that was just an off-day for her and that she's not always rude. read more

I have consigned over 1,000 items over the past few years and still cannot figure out their system. Even the volunteers all have different answers for what they take and how they take it. The rules seem to change on a day to day basis. I have been consigning here on a weekly basis for over 7 years - seems like there would be more consistency.The website will tell you they are taking something but you get there and they don't or there is some detail wrong - ie. wire on back of art instead of hooks. Some of the volunteers are nice and helpful while others are meaner than Nurse Ratchet. I have sold a LOT of very high end antiques for next to nothing. I never know what happens to the items I have not sold. Wish there was a way to get a donation credit. You must be very patient, non-confrontational, docile, and just willing to give up if you want to work with this place. read more

Fun place to shop and consign. You have to play by their consignment rules which can change from day to day, but the little monthly checks are worth it to me. Lately I have soured a bit to the Guild Shop due to the attitude of one staff member. Her name is Judith, and I believe she is the manager or director. She has a problem with plus size people! My first encounter with her was about a year ago was when I asked for my change back after a sale instead of putting it in their donation box. She very snidely said - "what - are you afraid you are going to starve to death?" I am a round girl, that hurt! I sent an email complaint via the website and never got a response. Being in charge she probably deleted it. Then, several months ago I took in some dresses to consign. She passed by the consignment area, rifled through my clothing and rejected one. She said it was "too dark". The dress was dark brown and orange, and a lightweight material. She did not reject the black, heavy polyester one. The brown dress was a 3X, the black one was a 14. The whole "it's too dark" thing MADE NO SENSE. Then it hit me...fat dress! She has forgotten that the Guild Shop is a place of charity in her obvious dislike of the plump. I say what the hell does she know...she wears Pocahontas braids like we did when we were 8 and she's looks well over 65! Most of the staff is lovely, they are truly beautiful people. But this Judith is a snob and needs to leave her TUDE at home! read more

Tied IMHO as best in Houston. Well organized, expertly curated. If I lived here in SCTx, I would furnish my home here. Not cheap, but not inappropriately priced. Mix of inexpensive and moderately priced housewares, furnishing, tschokskies; a little light on clothing. Got a lovely light aqua glass bowl art piece for $5. Could have spent hours here; divided to garden, mirrors, glass, porcelain, teapots, furniture... endless and no debris. You won't be sorry to visit! read more

Stopped in after searching long and hard for a pre-loved dresser... went to two others first: Catholic Women's Guild (was very impressed with this shop) and Mustard Seed Resale (not so impressed). But for furniture, the Guild Shop hands down exceeded the others (and Goodwill). TGS had the largest selection of furniture and especially dressers, where others are lacking. I cannot speak for the other "departments" here as I made a line for the furniture and didn't scope out anything else. Found the perfect item (finally!!) and the wonderful workers helped load it into my car in no time flat. Highly recommend and will be back!! read more
