The Guild Shop is my husband's idea of utter hell but I think it is fun and like getting cash for stuff I don't use anymore. Plus, I've found some great costume jewelry there over the years. Like at any establishment, there are certain little tips that can enhance your experience at The Guild which I am happy to share: 1. DO NOT, repeat DO NOT EVER go here on a Saturday if you can help it. The store gets very crowded and you'll have to take a ticket to look at their jewelry (not so on other days). This is the most popular area and you can be stuck waiting a looooong time if you get behind people who seemingly want to try on every single cloisonné brooch. However, if you have no choice but to go on a Saturday, do expect lots of shoppers and try to go near opening/closing times. 2. Prior to dropping off consignments, download their consignment form and have it all filled out. Go ahead and put sticky tags with your Guild number on your item. Have your items on the clear hangers they prefer. If you do all this beforehand, you can be in and out in 5 minutes unless you get the cranky red headed lady from the UK who volunteers at the Take-In Counter. She is always bitching at consignors about something or another so avoid her. 3. In addition to their rockin' jewelry department, The Guild often has nice ladies shoes. They are pretty picky about only displaying shoes in good condition and sometimes it is worthwhile to get a pair that has already been broken in. 4. Check the price tag closely since they use a racheting down system meaning that the longer an item has been there, the cheaper it gets. You will be astonished at how inexpensive some things can be (eg. $6 for a Dana Buchman blouse in perfect condition). read more

Nice place! I was really impressed. Lots of items here that stem from patio furniture all the way to fine crystal. Well organized and staff was very friendly and willing to help. Had lots of Jewelry when you first walk in and then clothes area. Many paintings available to view and furniture that goes with it. There were some strange items that caught my eye that I decided to put in photographs. Patio furniture was very minimal but it could have been due to people buying it all up since fall is coming. Only reason for the four star is the parking. What a mess. Very unorganized and such a pain. Lots of space in back but they had it closed off for some reason. It was bad enough to where I almost didn't stop and moved on. Overall prices are bit high but you can bargain a little bit. Check this spot out for sure. Do not go here. They're rude and seem racist. Unsuspecting people will think the parking is for the cafe across the street because the lot is attached to the cafe and the "will tow" signs are faded. Put a large sticker that ruins your windows and feel nothing about it. A simple envelope with the violation will do the same Job. If your policy is "you'll tow" then stick to that otherwise you'll face penalties from people. This place is not even that popular to tow and do this stuff the way it is. The price tags are on the higher end but for the most part you're paying for higher end items. For example, a big ceramic pot will run you $40 or you might pay $300 for a chair that needs reupholstered. From our first phone conversation, I felt like I was in good hands as she guided me through the consignment process. Vera is warm, gracious, helpful, and very knowledgeable about designer lines and garment quality. She has an eye for detail, and she is also diplomatic if she's unable to sell an item. She goes above and beyond to make consigning easy for me, and she always makes me feel appreciated for bringing my things to The Guild Shop. I have consigned at other places where the take-in was frosty, where I never received any follow-up, or worse, no payment for my items. I have never had a bad experience at The Guild Shop. Additionally, my hat goes off to all the volunteer staff who seem to work tirelessly to make the place hum. I feel thankful that my items generate revenue for the charity-- and for me. I absolutely love resale shopping. I have been coming here for years. This past Friday, I decided to pop in for a quick look. I saw a parking spot outside the fence by the exit gate of the parking lot off of Dunlavy. I pulled up, stopped directly next to the spot, had my reverse lights on, and was waiting for a break in the street traffic to back in to the space(don't usually back in to spots, but it would be easier to leave when pulling directly onto Dunlavy). We'll, this small pickup zips up and pulls in!!! I was furious. I waited the man to exit the truck and confronted him. He said he hadn't seen me waiting for the spot(and I was right in front of it!!). I called him a name and sacked if he was going to move. He, "too bad"and walked inside the Guild. When I went in, lo and behold, has putting on an apron! He is one of the volunteers!! His name is Jim!! He may look like a kind little man, but, he is a big a$$hole in my books!!!! read more

I cannot think of anything I would rather do than wander around and pick through other people's unwanted treasures and find unique and funky items to decorate with. My little brother won wheel of fortune this year and I was able to score him a vintage light up marquee sign, I found a beautiful rabbit black fur coat for my best friend, and an original oil painting from the 60s for myself! I had a lovely chat with a man named Bob who helped me with the fur and everyone I encountered was so sweet. Even the security guard! I will be back! read more

As a gumshoe to the resale world I have to say that this place is AWESOME. Now I didn't mean to scare or yell at you with the all caps but mainly attempt to drill it into your head that this place is cool. The main reason I came here is to look for a shelf or two. My desk at home is piled with random stuff and I need space to display it. What I found was this place not only has furniture for sale but a load of other random crap that I needed to buy. They have dishware, clothes, jewelry, art, lamps, and other fun trinkets. A Garfield telephone? They got it. Imitation Blues Clues chair? They got it. Huge stuffed elephant that probably weights 70 pounds? They got it. They jam a lot of stuff into the space and when busy it can get crowded. The furniture isn't laid out neatly so you kind of have to hunt around...but really isn't that why you are there? It's more of an adventure filled with excitement when you find a deal. Pricing seemed pretty fair and goes by a three-date process meaning they list three dates and a price for each item. The longer the item is in the store the cheaper it could be once it passes the date. If you are into resale, in need of a sad clown painting (see photos), or just like random stuff, then be sure to set aside a day to visit and explore the hidden treasures at The Guild. read more

Careful here. While they do have no parking signs the security guard is damaging vehicles that park in there lot next to the restaurant who miss the signs. Towing is reasonable but not the damage. read more

The Guild Shop is a little resale store on Dunlavy operated to benefit needy senior citizens in Houston. As with most resale stores, it is a 'here today, gone tomorrow' situation so you never know what you'll find. They have really high end items that you can pick up for very little in clothing, furniture, jewelry and accessories. You can even pick up little home decor or yard items. When the shop first gets the items, they are priced, but the longer things stay here, the cheaper they get. It is fun to browse through the store and see all of the great stuff they get. They keep very short hours during the day so make sure you don't try to stop by at 5PM - they'll be closed. They're also closed on Sunday. If you're looking to buy sell or consign, The Guild Shop takes many items so consider stopping by here whether you have something to pick up or something to unload. Also, parking can be a challenge on this little section of the street so be prepared to hunt for a spot when you're in the area. read more

This should not be listed under thrift stores at all. Prepare to spend BIG. I went in looking for a chair for my living room. First thing I ran into was a French Mid-Century Laddes (otherwise known as "old chair"). On sale for $997. I almost shouted the one French word I know...loudly. Word of advice... stores, be who you are. Unless you're a 1%er this is no more a thrift than I am Peter Pan. I see the draw. It's huge and had I had a leisurely day ahead of me, perhaps I may have lingered a bit more, but after my second glance at a 5 year old LaZ Boy nearly threw me off my rocker at just under $500, I headed for Craigslist and was well within my budget by dusk. If you call River Oaks home, this may be your thrift, but for me... I only meet Rockefellers when they're served on the half-shell. read more

Well, I Consigned 2 St. John Knits to The Guild in March of this year. I went back to get them because they never sold. I found out they had given them away!!!!!!!!!!!!! No, one told me any of this when I signed them over to them to sell. The Director, told me it was in my contract. Well, get an Attorney before you consign anything here. I hope someone does enjoy the clothes, I really do but, they should have something set up that when you give them anything of a large value to at least e-mail you and tell you times up come and get them!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I like this thrift store for the "possibility" and hope I have to find something great. However, lately, I'm having zero luck. It's a little disappointing, but that is the nature of thrift store shopping. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. What I do like: - good service and smart people who volunteer their time - the overall selection is vast if you want things like dishes/home goods - well organized, considering how much stuff they have What I don't love: - clothing is really not that nice. I echo Bunny V's sentiments; they can be stained or of poor quality/pilled. VERY few upscale brands. I did see a few DVF dresses, but nothing true vintage (pre-90s). - very goodwill-style selection of fashion overall - just not that special as I would think for their area/market. (Montrose/inside the Loop) - not their fault, but be prepared for pushy, shovy shoppers. (Bring a raw steak for those overzealous treasure hunters.) Be aware that they close at 3:30, so this is tough for people who work. Thank you again to the kind volunteers that pretty much are the only reason I'm giving 4 stars. If just based on selection and quality of items, I would give a 2 today. I recommend they choose their items to keep more selectively, and donate the rest to a free organization. When I decided to give up shopping (I reached an age where I don't need anything) I decided to take in a few things to consign. Best decision ever. I'm an avid thrifter. I went to check this place because it was recommended to me. Definitely more pricey that what I was I was expecting. Considering, I'm a bargain hunter when shopping at thrift stores. Some stuff here is supper expensive. But every once in a while I'll find a great deal. I recently picked up an all crystal ice bucket for $25 for a client gift. Way more that I would ever spend a resale shop, but before I went in I was considering buying a brand new one that retailed for $65. With that being said, I would def not call this place a thrift store. This is a high end resale/fine antique shop. For fine items, so be prepared to pay a FINE cost. read more

Limited number of dresses as compared to separates. Also limited amount of shoes, purses, scarves. The designer pieces are on a separate rack. Overall the selection is meh. Three dressing rooms with so-so lighting. Curtain for privacy. The store is crowded and there is not lots of room to browse the merchandise. Parking is in a gravel lot to the side of the building. Being as popular and well known as this place is I thought there is no way I would find anything here. Wrong. I found and purchased a $500 pair of barely used (i.e. some scuffs on the sole) Miu Miu sandals for $20. Insanity. Thank God the folks running this place are only familiar with brands like St. Johns or else my beauties would've been locked behind the glass (I kid I kid)! A Marc Jacobs wallet also caught my eye but at $25 with some imperfections visible I decided to wait a few more weeks until the price is lowered to $10. At first glance when you walk in you'll probably think the same thing I did... "Grandmas Attic/Typical Thrift Store" BUT if you look a little closer you will be surprised at what you may find. I almost hesitate to turn people on to The Guild Shop sometimes, for fear that it will become even busier than it already is. But I can't keep such a wonderful place a secret, no matter how much I might want to. The Guild Shop is a secondhand/consignment shop run by St. John the Divine Episcopal Church. You can find it tucked along a residential street off West Gray, ideal for those early morning shopping excursions that might start out with breakfast at Epicure Cafe down the street and end with a car full of unexpected treasures. The shop is open Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 3:30 pm, making shopping difficult for those of us who work during the week. Luckily, it's also open for a short but sweet window on Saturdays, too, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Trust me when I say this: get there early. The Guild Shop is like a giant gift bag, filled with all kinds of goodies from the smallest pearl ring to a giant fur coat, from a delicate Limoges teacup to a beautiful mahogany armoire: you never know what you're going to find there. They stock absolutely everything, including clothing, books, albums, art (framed and unframed), jewelry (real and costume), dishes, furniture, assorted household items and anything from junque to true antiques. You have to remain vigilant for the undiscovered gems and, unless you want to spend the entire afternoon there, a fairly clear picture of what you are hoping to find. Not that there's anything wrong with spending all day there... An important feature to note about The Guild Shop is their pricing. Each item has a price tag with three dates on it: the initial price of the item is listed, and the three successive dates represent when it will be marked down and how much it will be at that time. If you find a real treasure at The Guild Shop, but aren't willing to spend X amount of dollars on it, simply note the date that it will be reduced and come back on that day. A word of caution, however, that not everyone will wait for the price to come down, so your treasure could very well have disappeared when you return. The Guild Shop has expanded several times and has helpfully divided their great bounty into sections, so you'll know to head straight to the very back for furniture, or to the front of the store for jewelry. This definitely cuts down on the amount of wandering that you could do in there, and has been vastly improved since the early days of The Guild Shop and its small, rickety layout. Parking is always a bit difficult to come by in their one, small surface lot. You can attempt to park along Dunlavy or one of the side streets, but beware of blocking driveways or parking the wrong way on the street -- local peace officers are well-aware of the weekend Guild traffic and tend to be quite generous with the tickets. If you do purchase something, and it's heavy, have no fear -- there are always strapping young Guild Shop volunteers to help you load your haul. And the best part about shopping here? All of their proceeds -- every single penny that you spend there (except for the few items on consignment) -- goes to charity. Some recent charities that The Guild Shop has donated to include: St. James House (for senior citizens), the HPD Community Services Fund and the Houston Humane Society. read more

I've consigned and purchased here and have been satisfied in both instances. I bought two huge clay planters for like $35 and I bought a locket which my bestie absolutely adores. Typically there are 3+ prices and corresponding dates on the sales tag...sometimes, if you want to wait it out, you can get a cheaper deal....basically, the price goes down on a predetermined schedule, if the item languishes in the store. The money that the consignment earns is shared on a 3:1 basis ($36 item will net you $24 if sold immediately) and all of the proceeds that store earns go to charities supported by St. John the Divine Church. Be aware...when you consign, there are lots of rules about the dates, types of items, etc. You might want to follow-up by calling the store or subscribing to their e-blast. read more
