I can't believe I gave them three stars and 2. Their $12.99 "regular" plate used to be $9. WHAT?! I got their $12.99 regular platter but with their new "spicy chicken" for $1 extra. I added some hummus, jalapeños (+$0.59), and olives (+$0.99) too so note that price point can climb up quickly. But hey, I usually only get The Halal Guys less than a handful of times a year, even though I enjoy them, because this location is right by Arizona State University. The one and only Halal Guys left in Arizona and I hope they never leave. Been coming here for years, usually when ASU is on summer to winter break because the amount of traffic in this area is intense. Since I pop in so seldomly, even though I love them, I get the regular sized platter for $12.99. Add some hummus, jalapeños (+$0.59), and olives (+$0.99) and dig in. I tried a side of their wings this time around. They were good but really small. The spice level is addictive. Hurt me, Halal Guys. I'm a glutton for your spicy punishment. The Halal Guys never disappoints! I've been to one location in Vegas, so I was curious to see how the Tempe location compared. We visited on a Saturday night, but luckily were able to find parking in the back. I was going to order their limited edition wings, but ended up going for their classic beef gyro small platter for $11.99. My boyfriend got the same order, except the regular platter, which will run you $12.99. You can choose to add jalapeños or olives, but I believe those will cost extra. I really like their hot sauce here, but be cautious as it is very spicy! The staff advised me they could also provide the hot sauce on the side, which I appreciated. Their white sauce is also very delicious with the platter. They provided a decent amount of beef gyro meat, lettuce, tomato, pita and rice. Everything tasted very fresh and I thought it was a decent deal for the price. My boyfriend did want to order their lychee tea, however we were a little sad to hear that they were all out/the machines were broken and no tea options were available. Overall, it was a very clean establishment and great location near ASU for late night eats. We'll be back for our next craving! read more

I popped in to The Halal Guys for a sandwich for a quick dinner. I was surprised to find it completely empty at 5:00 on a week night when nearby establishments were hoping. Service was fast a friendly. Got the falafel sandwich. It was around $10. Bread was good, falafel was solid. White sauce (I don't think it was tzatziki, but maybe it was?) was tasty. Hot sauce was great--lots of flavor mild heat. I was happy with the sandwich though it could have used humus IMO ($1.50 up charge). I didn't get the fries because many times a falafel pita will leave me stuffed and I had things to do and didn't want to be in a carb coma, but I could have used a little more food--and I'm not a big eater. While I liked the food, I didn't think it was a great value. A meal that is a sandwich, fries, and drink in the $15 range would be appealing--just saying. read more

I asked for a drop of the hot sauce this time because they gave me 2 hot sauce lines and I struggled eating my food. So be careful with the hot sauce! Ordered here from a delivery app. I got one falafel plate and one gyro plate. Both plates came with rice, lettuce, tomato, pita, and tahini. Thought the gyro meat was tender and had good flavor. The falafel was good but I can tell it's not their specialty. Needed to be more fried, needed more flavor. I would say it would be good in a combo plate with another protein. Presentation was very good especially for delivery. Lettuce was crips. Rice had a good springy texture. Seasoning on the rice was mild. Definitely would consider ordering from here again. read more

Halal Guys has announced a "rapid expansion" of their restaurant locations. Not so for their Montebello (Christown Spectrum) store which has closed. Since I was in the neighborhood, I visited the Rural Rd store in Tempe. Before heading over, I placed an order on their app. Unfortunately, the app did not offer fountain (only bottled) drinks, curbside pickup or payment options such as PayPal or Apple Pay. Bummer. When I arrived, the order was ready when promised and was accurate. I opted for the Chicken and Beef Gyro Combo Platter. It included mostly rice and iceberg lettuce. The meats were okay, but lacked flavor. Eyeballing it, here's an ingredient breakdown: 35% - Rice 25% - Iceberg Lettuce 15% - Chicken 15% - Gyro Beef 7% - Pita 3% - Tomato The pita wasn't especially warm, but it was fluffy and would recommend it. Health conscious eaters beware. The included pouch of "White Sauce" was good, but clocked in at a whopping 330 calories for the sauce alone. Halal Guys was okay for the fast service and price point. If you're interested in better food, their original NYC lunch cart is probably a better option. read more

I want to start off by saying that I was perplexed to find that HG only had a 3 star rating. Upon review, it appears to be mostly due to service, not the quality of the food. I have yet to have an issue with their service; I have always been attended to promptly! Disclaimer, I also go pretty late in the evening, 8/9PM, I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I have had the chicken and beef gyro both and they are both tasty! I either get the regular combo platter or beef platter which is $10. I load mine up with rice, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, jalapeños, and bell peppers. The veggies have always been fresh! Don't skip the white sauce!! It's creamy and delicious! And the hot sauce was hot, really not sure what is happening but I had my usual 2 lines yesterday and it was very faint... Bf had 3 lines and there was some lingering hotness... he said next time he might do 4-5 lines :O I usually have enough leftover for a second meal, which you can't beat at $10. Update: I contacted back as requested in the response at the provided email- never heard a word back. So, I opted to give this another try this past weekend. I'm not going to dock another star because I'm not really surprised. There's some internal work that could use attention. I made sure to order MUCH earlier than an hour before closing this round. It's a little obscure to be one of the few business in this area that close at 9pm on weekends with this being a lunch & dinner genre establishment. So early bird (but not so special) order at 5pm on a Saturday! It proved two things. 1. The order was MUCH more fresh & flavorful. Why couldn't it have been that way when I ordered at 8pm last time? I still feel like I received old, cold & bottom of the barrel about to be tossed food last round if there is this much a world of difference between time of day. So I don't believe orders are made fresh as they're received. And I'm not someone who wants to eat dinner so early. Inconvenient when you know you have an ultimatum here. 2. I had to literally pay more to receive what is considered a normal portion for the combo. The trick is ordering "extra" of the main features. Sticking with regular will get you a few small bites of the main features on top of a giant bed of lettuce concealed below. You're getting a salad instead of a combo is the way the regular is set up. So I chose to pay the increase of selecting extra for the main portions- it was exactly the amount the regular SHOULD be & a much smaller side of lettuce. You'd think one platter would be enough to split between two like we received at the LA location- not the case. You have to pay for extra to get more than a concealed showcase of lettuce. And, I still feel like the baklava is entirely too steep. The pieces got a little smaller this time. $8 for two triangles is quite a bit more than other local Mediterranean establishments offer. Saving grace is that the pita & hummus are really good & portioned per price. Along with nice to-go supplies & they never short you on sauces. But pretty much everywhere can master the minor details. Just overall not impressed with the Arizona location. Seems like HQ isn't really on board, either, if they ask you to reach out personally then don't bother to respond. Wouldn't be my first choice of location but if you've got a taste for halal guys it'll take care of the craving. I'm not too familiar with Phoenix but after we got in from the airport I was starving and I'd been craving halal. We stopped in here and the place was filthy. If I wasn't getting a hunger headache I would've left and gone somewhere else. It took almost 5 minutes before the employee told us that she would be with us shortly. No one else was in the building. We finally ordered and our food was good as expected but just not the ideal experience. My servings were a little smaller than what I'm used to receiving at the Dallas location so that was another con. We asked her to clean off a table for us to eat because all of the tables were dirty. She cleaned literally just the table we were sitting out. We were there for about 40 minutes and only one other customer came in so I'm not sure why they didn't bother cleaning up the lobby or kitchen. I guess in conclusion if you really want halal it'll be worth your trip but it may be better to get your food to go to cut down on the bad experience or just find a different location all together. read more

Haven't been here in about a year. I used to love this place. The chicken is not the same and tastes horrible. Now they charge for hot sauce and any toppings besides onion and green peppers. Service wasn't great. Parking in this area has gotten so bad I'd say it's a risk to do repeated loops waiting for a spot to open up with everyone fighting for space. Halal Guys is the best!! I like to order the chicken and beef combo to alternate between each as I make short work of the small platter. To mine I added salad, tomato, onion and olives which all pair well with either protein. The white sauce is a must for bringing harmony to the platter. Get two packets if you're real sauce lover. I specifically ordered a "regular" platter since the menu says it comes with 2 red sauces and 1 white sauce. When I received my order, it only came with 1 white sauce. Why bother specifying it on the menu if you aren't going to fulfill it? As far as the beef itself, it was a disappointment. It was overcooked, and not having enough sauce made it even worse. It also didn't have enough flavor, even with the white sauce. So disappointed. I've heard great things about the Halal guys and was really looking forward to this meal. Never again. read more

I have been to Halal Guys at this location previously and ordered in-person. I received a full Gyro sandwich as I had expected. Today, I ordered online instead and ended up with a sandwich that was easily half the size of what should be expected. Considering each of the sandwiches were around $10 and I have previously had full ingredients/toppings in the sandwich, I was disappointed in the change with an online order and received much less food than I would have had I gone in to order. Food quality should be the same regardless of whether I am there when you make it or open it up at home where you're counting on me not wanting to drive back to the location when the order isn't satisfactory. read more

There is a few tables and chairs there, but when it is crowded it is difficult to find a place to sit down. I hear great things about Halal guys, that they started in New York in a food truck. Maybe they had on off day. Maybe my expectations were to high. Whatever the reason, I didn't find the meal satisfying. The rice and the chicken tasted like the lettuce with no flavor. The only thing that saved the food was the spicy white sauce. The spicy white sauce is in a bottle at the back near the sofa machine. Coming from Southeast Michigan, the Arab capital of North America, I am a bit of a Middle Eastern food snob. This place was aight but definitely not as good or fresh as the food back home. I took the Yelp tips seriously and ordered extra extra sauce on my mixed falafel and chicken bowl. I also opted against the supposedly super duper hot sauce. I think the extra sauce helped moisten the (somewhat dry) chicken and the (not so great) falafels. In the bowl, there was shredded taco-like lettuce and tomatoes that didn't add much to the flavor. The pita bread was dry and definitely wasn't fresh. Bowl toppings were limited and the kalamata olives added the most flavor. The small side of hummus ($1) wasn't the best and I actually ended up throwing it away. All in all, the food seemed a bit prefabricated and didn't seem as authentic or homemade as what I'm used to. I am sure this place is a nice, convenient option for some folks. The service was pleasant and efficient. I am glad I gave it a shot but I think I'd opt for another spot for my next Middle Eastern cuisine fix. read more

First time trying The Halal Guys and I wasn't super impressed. The folks working there were nice and had good costumer service but the quality of the food wasn't super great. Got the Gyro sandwich which was served with a crazy amount of the "white sauce" although it was described as a tzatziki sauce it was mostly mayo with none of the traditional cucumber taste. To me it's just a little gross to have that much of a mayo flavor in one dish but that's a personal preference. I was also a little sad that they don't carry feta cheese. I think it is possible some would like this place if they are looking for a quick meal but it's just did not fit with my idea of when I am craving Mediterranean food or gyro. read more
