    Moldy Pita
    Leila S.

I would absolutely give this place 0 stars if possible. I'm completely appalled with the quality of the food served to me today. I was given moldy pita with our meal and I'm really hoping no one else was as well. It is disappointing to be unable to eat half a meal that was paid for, with little to no time to get a replacement, or even a new meal. This is mostly a health concern, as it is extremely obvious that the bread is not edible, nor should it be in the kitchen. The standards should not be this low, especially for such a vulnerable population, college students, who may not have the time or funds to go get any other food. I sincerely hope Halal Shack gets this issue under control, as I will definitely not be returning.

Mix rice bowl with beef and chicken
    Rhea B.

I got the rice bowl with mix meat of beef and chicken, and I can honestly say that their sauces are what makes the dish great! The meat was dry (beef was almost crunchy) but very well seasoned. They give you two choices of rice- brown or white- and the brown was really tasty! Their rice bowl also comes with two pieces of pita bread that was just average. It seemed store bought and they did not even warm it before serving. I paid about $9 for the mix rice bowl, which I believe is a decent price, especially for the amount you get. At the end of the meal I was pretty full. You get the option of a rice bowl, lettuce bowl, naan roll, zoodles bowl, gyro and fries. After you pick what you want, you choose your protein (beef, chicken, shrimp), then whatever toppings. This spot is located at SDSU inside east commons, very easy to find. Overall, I hate to compare it to halal guys, but I would rather get halal guys. But considering that there is no halal guys in San Diego, it won't hurt to try out Halal shack, just don't come in with high expectations.

Rice with beef (and every free add-on) bowl

When this restaurant opened, I was stoked to have a Middle Eastern restaurant be so close to where I worked on campus. The beef can be dry, and the bread included in the bowl is stale. As for the price, the bowl is lacking in terms of portion size. However, the customer service is great; they prepare your food in a timely manner. Also, the white sauce really does add to the bowl. Overall, it's a great spot to check out if you're craving some flavorful food on the go!

Customer Service was great! Super welcoming staff. Got the Zoodles bowl with falafel. Awesome food.

This is what a bowl with almost "everything" looks like but I did not get the extra cheese or hummus

First let me say that the girl that helped me out was nice. Other than that, this place really does not deserve even one star. I did not see prices on the menu but I have been curious about this place so I got a bowl. I asked to do half rice and half salad. They said no. Any bowl place will usually have no problem with this. I asked to do half seasoned rice and half regular rice, they still said "no we don't do that here". She reassured me that the rice bowl "comes with a salad", (which is not true). So I get (salty but also bland) seasoned rice, and there was not many protein options left, so I got (SALTY!) beef. Other options were battered and fried shrimp, battered and fried chicken, and I think falafel (if you do not eat meat). The two more popular options were sold out. Now, she did give me iceberg lettuce (which has like zero nutritional value), some tomato and onion. Which is a pathetic excuse for a salad in my opinion. There are options for spring mix and spinach but I guess it is only if you choose a salad instead of rice as a base. She really should have told me that when she was getting the base ready, to be frank. I even offered to pay more for spinach and spring mix and she still said no! "We don't do that here." I should have walked away at this point. Cheese and hummus are extra. I did not get them because I feel like restaurants should not need to upcharge you/nickel and dime you for your food to taste good. The bowl toppings were very sad as well. I forget but I think the options were toasted pitas strips, jalapeno and corn and something else? Very sad. They could have saved themselves here if they had a few different sauces, ginger, carrot, nuts, sesame seeds or garbanzo beans or something, anything. But nope. And then they added some (salty and stale) pita bread. And then the sause was okay but it definately did not save the dry rice, stale bread and tasteless veg. It came out to about $11. Which is a great price for a tasty bowl at ANY OTHER RESTAURANT. There is a poke place on like college ave, there is a chicken place in the same building, a make your own sandwich place, make your own salad. Lots of other great options. Anyone who is pleased with this place, I honestly do question your other reviews because this place is not good. Eat somewhere else if you care about what goes into your body. In summary. Not worth the price, bland food with questionable nutrition content, and workers will politely decline everything that you ask. And then ask if you want a drink with that.

The only Phil's I knew at that point pertained to coffee. Lol. Not being a huge meat eater, I was kind of standoff-ish about the idea but since the establishment is known for being a staple visit whenever people come to SD, I had to do it. The 17K+ reviews and the 4.5 star solid rating also helped with that decision. Known for their slow cooked meats and their large portions, Phil's BBQ is a casual dining experience where you get a combo of self serve and attentive service from the staff- all rolled into one. Our family of 3 arrived for a late lunch. The meal consisted of: *BABY BACK RIB + CHICKEN DINNER $25.99 -paired with potato salad + sweet baked beans *BBQ WINGS- 10ct $11.95 *SAUSAGE LINK $4.99 *COLOSSAL ONION RINGS $9.99 *LARGE SIDE: STEAMED VEGGIES $4.75 * FOUNTAIN DRINKS $3.49/each Ribs and chicken were good. These meats were cooked perfectly- lathered in sauce and very tender. The wings were good and had a light kick to it- nothing to bat an eye over for us adults but a lot of soda breaks were needed for my toddler. Beans were delicious but the potato salad wasn't a fave. The onion rings were the biggest letdown- these were massive in size but so very dry and overly crunchy. This order essentially went untouched after a few bites. the hot link was delicious and the veggies were made well but bland. 3.5 stars for the food but because this review is specifically dedicated to Kira, it's automatically a FIVE!!!! This young lady truly made our visit to Phil's BBQ 100% memorable and very much enjoyed. Service doesn't get any better than what she's offering and her warmth provided to the patrons are unmatched! Girl, YOU DESERVE A MF'N RAISE!!!!!!

Both are always cooked perfectly and never dry at all. They have a ton of different sauces you can choose from, but my favorites are the garlic sauce and cilantro tahini.  They have a small parking lot that's shared with a couple of other businesses. If you come during peak meal times you may have to wait for a spot or park one lot over, but I've never really had any issues. If you're ordering during lunchtime on a weekday, they do get super busy since a lot of employees from neighboring offices come by for takeout, so just be sure to give yourself plenty of time. The staff is also consistently warm and kind, which makes the whole experience feel good from the moment you walk in. My only real frustration is with the wait times on online orders, and it's significant enough that I have to mention it. I work 10 min away and only get a 35-40 minute break. The app consistently quotes around 20 minutes- but honestly, 20 minutes shouldn't even be necessary. I've stood there and watched them make a bowl. It takes about two minutes. Other similar restaurants have my order ready in five minutes, consistently. So when the app quotes 20 and then I still end up waiting at the 20 minute mark on top of that - in a nearly empty restaurant - something is off. Today this happened (I hit the 20 min mark with no food), and I had to go up and ask them to make my order. This isn't a one-time thing either. It's happened enough times over the years that it genuinely deters me from coming here on my break. To their credit, there was a stretch where it seemed like they had it figured out, so I know they can do it. I just wish that consistency would stick. If you're not on a time crunch, absolutely go. The food alone is worth it. But if you're relying on a quoted pickup time, build in a buffer- a bigger one than you'd think you'd need.

I was there about 1245 on a Monday and there were a few people there and they had some takeout orders so my order took about 10 minutes before I could walk out the door with it. They had a nice condiment bar where you could pick out some yogurt with dill sauce and then they're famous garlic yogurt sauce, as well as a jalapeño sauce And another spicy hot one that I would never try. When I got back to the jury room to eat my meal, I saw that there was a nice quantity of the fresh salad and the grilled vegetables but the meat was piled high! Since we were going to be in Hillcrest, we chose Khyber Pass - and wow, what an incredible decision. This was easily some of the best food I've had in a very long time. We started with the Bolani. Absolute perfection. It had a beautiful crunch, perfectly seasoned filling, and none of that sogginess I often run into with Bolani elsewhere. We could've ordered another plate and been thrilled. Next came the Aushak with ground beef: one of my all-time favorite Afghan dishes. Think of it like delicate leek-filled ravioli topped with savory meat and tangy yogurt. It hit all the right notes. We also shared the Kofta Kabob, served with grilled vegetables and fluffy basmati rice. The seasoning was spot on, and the meat was juicy and tender, similar to Persian koobideh, but truly memorable in its own way. Our server recommended the Afghan Yaghoot Chalao (Cherry Curry) with chicken. Yes, cherries! Sweet, sour, rich, bright. I had to resist the urge to literally lick my plate clean. And then: the Qabuli Palao with lamb. I do not like lamb. My friend loves it, so I agreed...and I'm so glad I did. I genuinely loved this dish. The saffron-coriander rice with carrots and raisins was aromatic and comforting, and the lamb was tender and flavorful. If you're hesitant about lamb, trust me, this dish might convert you. Portions were generous, we came hungry, and still left with leftovers. I also ordered the house-made Doogh, a mint yogurt drink. It's not for everyone, but it's pure comfort to me. We finished with hot tea infused with cardamom, black for me, green for my friend, and it was the perfect close to a perfect meal. I told our server that this food was even more delicious than what my mother makes. I'm Afghan born and raised in San Diego. That is not a compliment I give lightly. I believe the restaurant is under newer management since around 2020/2021. I last ate here in 2015, and even back when it was on Convoy in the late '90s, and this is the best it has ever been. I highly, highly recommend Khyber Pass to anyone: adventurous eaters, first-timers, comfort-food seekers, well everyone. I'll definitely be back, and next time I'm saving room for dessert.
