Found Troy's on Yelp since it's near my work and decided to give it a try -- so glad I did. I ordered the chicken souvlaki. I was running late picking it up, so by the time I actually ate it about 45 minutes had passed, and it was still delicious. The pita bread was perfectly sized and chewy. The ingredients inside were fresh, just as I'd hoped -- the tomatoes and cucumbers had a great crunch. The chicken was perfectly grilled with a nice slightly charred flavor, and the tzatziki was so refreshing it made the whole dish taste light and healthy. My only small nitpick was that the skewer was still in the chicken. It probably wouldn't have mattered if I'd eaten in and had metal utensils, but they only included plastic forks and knives, which didn't cut through the chicken very well. I also asked for ketchup for my fries and only got one packet for a pretty generous portion. Little things aside, it was a really enjoyable meal and I'd happily come back. read more

I was looking for a Greek lunch, my second favorite type of cuisine, and this restaurant's location deeper into Mission Valley was to my liking. From what I could glean from looking at its website, it seemed like Troy's Greek had the sorts of items I would choose from a Greek menu. I had a combination souvlaki and gyro platter that was rounded out by a Greek salad, rice, carrots, and a piece of spanakopita. Surely, there was a soft drink in the mix. The portions were to my liking and everything was very tasty. The prices were fair. The service was "mostly" fine. However, with the restaurant far from full, it appeared that a regular customer came in and the server and the customer began a long conversation about their families. It involved both having family members in the military, which is very common in the San Diego area. When I hear this sort of talk, it reminds me of a friend's father in Los Angeles saying he would not want to have a younger daughter living in the San Diego area for school or upon joining the workforce owing to the Navy guys and jarines who are there in large numbers. He had the right to think that way, whether overly cautious or sort of unreasonable. This often goes in and out of my head as I drive up and down all the undulations on I-5 between Camp Pendleton and the Del Mar area as you approach San Diego's city limits. I needed to get my bill, pay, and go. We finally made eye contact and she came to the table. It took too long. I really like the Mission Valley area. I now understand it better. It comes at you in segments. To its western end are all the dated '70s hotels along the lines of the now gone Hanalei. Then there's a corporate area with towers for financial and professional services. Then, there's Mission San Diego itself, the first of California's mission churches. And, finally, there's an area where the built environment relaxes a bit, so to speak, by way of wider streets, smaller business, strip malls, and more conventional housing. I got to learn something by coming to Troy's to have lunch that day. Also, I thought the restaurant might have been owned by some guy named Troy. It later occurred to me that an explanation for the name could be historic Troy in Greece ... and many Greek restaurants take their names from Greek places. The prolonged conversation between the server and the customer irritated me and I thought about lowering the rating because of it. The restaurant was not that full and, sometimes, it's when it's slower that the service is lackluster. However, the food at Troy's was very good, filling, and I liked everything that was on my plate. I would go back. Maybe I had been lulled into that "hey, wow, man" San Diego way in which one's affect might be as if on intravenous demerol. My dad wanted to go to Troy's while we were visiting him from Michigan. I thought the restaurant was quite attractive, and the staff was friendly. Apparently, my dad is a regular there, as they knew his name! I just had a Greek chicken salad. It was ok, but the carrots were cut too big for my taste and the chicken was dry. Troy's is a classic, old-school Greek atery that always satisfies. I have been going there for years and the food is consistent and prices for 2025 are a steal! We caught their happy hour (sorry, no pic of exact details but most of their beer and wine are $5 and can be enjoyed at your table -- maybe 5-7pm daily). They have some interesting Greek selections I have never seen before. We ordered the saginaki, served flaming hot, with triangles of warm pita. For dinner, my friend had the beef kabobs and I had the gyro and beef kabobs combo. The entrees come with soup or salad. Their salads are delightful with a tangy dressing and creamy bits of feta. The portions are generous and we had leftovers. The service is warm and friendly. No one rushed us or pressured us into ordering more. My one complaint is the parking since it is off Mission Gorge and the lot has a lot of other businesses. They have a great AYCE brunch that I haven't tried, but heard is fantastic. read more

We were staying in the area and saw that this place had a Sunday buffet brunch so we gave it a try. We didn't make a reservation at 11:00am but there was plenty of seating. The server was very nice and checked up on us frequently. She told us about the Avgolemono Soup from the kitchen and we asked for a bowl. It was our first time having it and we enjoyed it. It's like a lemon and chicken broth porridge which I enjoyed with the meats from the buffet. I really liked the salad, stewed pork? (super tender), and the gyro. Unfortunately, the chicken drumsticks were dry and the spanakopitas were not crispy. They also had some breakfast items like eggs, sausage, and potatoes but I didn't try that. The moussaka was just okay. I liked the Baklava for dessert and I tried the Galaktoboureko but it was missing some crispy texture. Had a lovely lunch at Troy's. Sat outside on a gorgeous fall day and enjoyed visiting with family. We had a lunch gyros special which was a perfect portion and Moussaka which came with a salad which I shared with my mother. The moussaka is a Greek casserole with ground beef (nicely seasoned with a bit of gravy) layered with sliced potatoes, grilled egg plant snd topped with bechamel sauce. My platter came with two marinated beef skewers charbroiled, skewers had onions and bell peppers. My sides were the rice pilaf and pita bread with tzatziki sauce. I also ordered a side of grilled onions. Their Greek salad was fresh and salad dressing was good. The beef skewers were tender; I did not like that they charbroiled my skewers a bit too long. There are always plenty of staff members so you never have to wait very long for your drinks or food. The staff is always very courteous, professional, and knowledgeable on the menu items. Ok my many reviews about coming here for the last 30 years are all positive, great food friendly workers. Although they may not know my name but it doesn't matter. I had the gyros and beef souvlaki my wife had the same except chicken. It was so good portions good pita was hot and soft. My husbands grandmother is living in a senior care facility and complains about how bad the food is so we went and dined with her - she was right it was bad. The food here at Troy's reminded me of that... The "tzatziki" sauce was disgusting. It was not tzatziki at all and the taste that it did have was very freezer burn like. I don't know what they're doing here but it's not hard at all to make tzatziki... Everything was so bland, under seasoned, dry and over cooked. Except the carrots were undercooked lol. I got a chicken entree and they don't even remove the chicken breast from the bone. The gyro meat on my husbands plate was so freakin dry. The place gave me vibes of a once popular restaurant that never updated or changed ANYthing and got lazy with time letting quality slide more and more. No trouble hearing each other. Lemon soup was very lemony. Salad with the meals was fresh. I had the moussaka which was amazing. Mashed potatoes on top were like a whipped slice of heaven. Eggplant, meat and layers were not too overpowering, pita was yummy and serving size was generous. Gyro special was good. Baklava cheesecake was a really nice way to finish the meal. My daughter is sick and she wanted their lemon chicken soup so off I went. I got there and I saw one server walking around and another employee sitting down with friends having a conversation. I stood there for 5 minutes and all the servers disappeared and the guy sitting down finally got up, walked to the front asking how he can help me. I said sorry I had to interrupt him with his friends and said I wanted two large soups. As I stood there I noticed they had canned sodas for $2.50 and small bottled water for $4.00. we have eaten at this restaurant for decades, but must say the last time we were there is the last time we will go there. the chicken was hard rather than soft. The waitress never came back to refill any coffee or water and there were two tiny slices of carrots rather than the usual quantity three or four. Everyone in our group had the same comments that they would not come back for similar reasons. The owner is a nice man, but the food tasted as if it had been cooked the previous day and was "re-cooked" everyone said the food was not soft and tasty.
