I was actually pretty impressed with this place. They get four stars because when I went they only had 1 sour beer (dudes...help me help you...get some more sours) When I describe this place to people I tell them to think of a large college Cafeteria but like with beer and food truck options. When you first walk in its a bit overwhelming but at the station when you can pick up food, they have some games you can always borrow to entertain yourself and your friends or bring your own. Beer menu is above the bar and you can either wait for a waiter or go up to the bar yourself. To order food, you can do it from their app or go up to the front of the bar and order it from a kiosk. I was most impressed with them listing you name and when your food is up on the board above the bar. Like..so cool. haha It can get loud but what good bar isn't. read more

I've been here twice- once for trivia night and the other for board game night. This is a neat place that is enormous, clean, and serve good food and drinks. The service is great where staff are attentive and come around to make sure you are taken care of. TV screens are large. I love the option to order food on the self-service tablet and then see your name on the list of orders on the big screen. We got the buffalo chicken pizza and it was reasonably priced, fresh, and delicious! Very quick service as well. Also got the pretzel with the 4 different dips and was a big fan of that too. Not sure if it's the acoustics or just because of the environment, but it can get really loud and hard to hear other people- but overall this is a great place ! read more

What I love the most about this place is that they constantly rotate new food trucks every week. You can check the app to see what trucks and entertainment will be there. The atmosphere is family friendly to watch sports on the big screens or play bingo on Monday nights. The beer menu is huge! They have special events like contests and holiday parties. We had a blast here! My Son in Law and daughter suggested my wifey and I check it out. I'm a beer hound and love trying out new places. We live in Minny and there are tons of breweries but NOTHING like this. If you can't find a beer here you have issues. As a bonus Nick the owner and Alex sat down by us and chatted us up. Alex was pretty busy bear hugging everyone. Nick explained his community building mission. Impressive. It was the Salvatore celebration. The place is a great idea. It really reminds me of biergartens I've been in with the shared table and bench seating, loud people and flowing beer. They have a pretty extensive drink menu and from what I understand a changing list of food trucks parked nearby from which you order food. First, you download the app. Select your food truck and food (pay within the app) and pick it up without ever going outside (great for winter). It looks like they'll be able to open up some big doors for summer and I can't wait to go back. They have events all the time (chili cookoff, brunch, viewing parties) I myself went for the announcement of the RAGBRAI lineup this year. Overall, I think it's got some glitches to work out (the tv and app both went down for a bit while I was there) but it's a fun place that everyone should check out. read more

Don't want to trek all over the DSM to do it? You're in luck. Just visit the Hall. It has it all. It's a unique concept that is surrounded by history. They've taken an old train depot that hasn't been used in years and turned it into something new again. Sit at one of their giant picnic tables and just enjoy hanging out, meeting new friends and being weird. The point is to meet people. I've noticed a few reviews have said the place is loud and has slow/bad service. Well, what new hip place in Des Moines isn't loud when it's at capacity. And right now they are new, trying to get the kinks ironed out and understaffed. Be patient. This place looks and feels like it will be a destination hang out for years to come. read more

Our company (200+) had an event here last night and a great time was had by all. There was a great setup for a group with 55 beer options on tap. The service was swift and friendly. We had an open bar so transactions were fast. I was hoping for a bit more options from the food trucks but what was there was top notch. The reason I cannot go five stars is due the acoustics. It was very loud with very little sound dampening. We had a part of the party that included videos created by team members but they were very much inaudible. When leaders grabbed a microphone to talk to the group the volume had to be so far up to be understood that it was painful. This is a really cool place to hang out and drink beer with a team or with friends. But until they spend a couple thousand $ on sound dampening don't dare go there for live music or any event depending on audio. read more

The tables are always filthy. The floors are rarely swept up. Employees use the family bathroom and leave it a disgusting mess. It's impossible for my daughter to effectively use the bathroom with how poorly the bathroom is stocked and how dirty the toilet is always left. This is place is simply not worth coming to. Complicated beer menus (have to download a specific app for the beer list), bad service, poor bartender (can't properly pour a beer), ands bad management. We were here on the night of the Grammies and despite multiple people asking for the sound to be turned on the management refused. If multiple groups ask something multiple times swallow your pride and do it. Learn how to pour a beer if you want to be considered a beer garden or get rid of your bartender who clearly doesn't know what he's doing. If you don't mind a mediocre night by all means go to the hall, aside from that take your service to one of the other great places in town. read more

Food and drinks would've gotten me up to a four star review. My dumplings and truffle fries were delicious and my boyfriend enjoyed his fish taco. However, the place is marketed as a place for food and conversation, but the giant TV's don't seem to meet that goal, as they are loud and distracting and hard to converse over. That bumped me down to three stars. For me, the space likely would've stood out more as a unique spot without this feature: cozier and easier to converse. Even so, we had a great evening. We went here on a Saturday. It was very cold and unfriendly. Also, it was very cold in temperature. I felt like I was sitting in a garage. The service was awful. We sat at the bar and waited forever for the girl to help us. She was less than pleased to be there. The countertops look like a faux wood with a lot of deep grooves in them. It was very unsanitary and dirty, I would imagine it's hard to clean. We ordered food, it was ready quickly. There was a very limited selection. I ordered the tenderloin and it came with 1/2 of one pickle slice. The rest of the condiments that came with it were produce long past it's prime and not safe looking to eat. read more

I am *in love* with the new establishment in West Des Moines. The Hall provides a great venue for draft beer enthusiasts while also providing space to easily try the metro's various food trucks. Before arriving, download "The Hall DSM" app to be able to order from the various trucks, though they also have an iPad there to place orders, as well. The patio provides the ideal space to enjoy the sunny Iowa days. The Hall itself is actually quite loud, as it is just one very large room with cafeteria-style tables and benches. Going there on a crowded night is very hard to hear. read more

Selection of beer was good, I liked the atmosphere. We were there at around 3pm on a weekend and there were a lot of infants and toddlers around. I suppose on a busy night finding a seat among the long common tables might be tough. But if you are looking for a laid back place to drink some beer and order some food at your leisure from a selection of food trucks (or their in house selection) this is the place. This is a unique concept with several positives. It's beer hall married with food trucks. For drinks the beer selection is broad and comes from local places (Exile/Confluence), further away brewers, in addition to the national brewers. For food, you order at a computer kiosk, see your name on a screen, and pick it up. There were 3 food trucks and the one we tried was very good and decently priced. Downsides: it's noisy. Paying for food via card is easy, but not sure if you can pay in cash. If you want big crowds and don't mind the noise then this will fit the bill. Otherwise skip and head to your local place or fox valley brewing or Confluence. read more

The Hall does not know how to handle large volume food orders across multiple food trucks. Food comes out cold and has to be sent back. Timing is very off. They do have a great bar with lots of beers. Just go when it's not busy. Staff did replace the cold food with warm food. read more

Gah I wanted to give this place a high rating soooo much! First, I really liked how the food truck process is set up! Second I liked the open space/community table atmosphere! With that being said, our group wasn't too impressed with the service. We were at a table in the front and were told that all the other tables but that one has waitstaff. That's OK, it is close to the bar but we had the worst time trying to get beverages. We were there for a few hours and it was a problem the entire visit. At one point, a waitress stepped in to tell the bartender to serve one of the people in my party because they had been skipped several times. Overall, I just felt like all the bartenders were inconvenienced by our table coming to the bar. Lastly a couple friends of mine were drinking Bud light and it tasted flat. They didn't want to complain because it wasn't horrible but just thought I'd mention that because it is a beer hall. read more

I'm kind of thinking between 2 and 3 stars. Going with 2 because I have a feeling they'll get better with age and then I at least have an upgrade option for a follow-up review. Ok, so the concept is wonderful - you have this giant beer hall with tons of picnic tables and plenty of places to sit. High ceilings give it a spacious feel, and the overall vibe you get with the history of the building is pretty cool. The execution leaves a lot to be desired though. Not having a beer menu handy is a total joke. You either have to watch the scrolling screen for 2 minutes or download the Untappd app on your phone. Neither are anywhere near as simple as a printed piece of paper that lists the beer options. Second fail is on the food side - I watched a friend do this, but apparently to order food you also have to download some app and then you have to watch another screen to see when your order is ready. Third kinda fail - not anywhere near as many TRUE craft beers on tap as you'd expect for a place that wants you to download an app such as Untappd (which is a craft lover app). As to solutions, well I already have one for the beer menu - print it out and have copies available. For the food, I don't know what to think of it, but there are wait staff milling about to get you beer refills and I don't know what would be wrong with placing an order with them and having them deliver it to you? Last thing, they're close on the craft beers, but simply need more of the stuff people crave and do not need three taps occupied with Coors Light, Miller Lite, Bud Light, although I guess that's probably what sells the most (haha). read more

Service was horrible, they were out of condiments, food came out in shifts and the technology they used at the kiosk was not efficient and one of the only two kiosks did not work. We took a group in between games and some people didn't get their food for an hour. It gets better, some people in the group were overcharged and-some got the wrong food , the manager would not refund or correct the Eder because the food trucks are separate. Probably could be a good idea but the implementations sucked!!! read more

The first time we came, on a Wed, i loved the place. Service was great, food (from Curbin Cuisine) was awesome. The 2nd visit was on a Friday. We arrived at 4:00 p.m. never had a waiter/waitress come take drink order in 2 1/2 hrs. Asked a drink runner to send someone over and they didn't.
