Okay I found I did not even need to move my car, in was probably 100 steps away. Atmosphere - Simple but effective. I love old tap handles being displayed, looking at them and checking if I have had them before. Couple televisions on with the new XFL going, sitting at a hot top enjoying our drinks. Drinks - The reason I came was not going to happen, I was not too shocked as they sold out the day the beer arrived. I had the Hexagenia IPA by Fall River Brewing Co. Their tap list is good size. Service - Greeted when we walked in and was told we could find our own spot. Not a great first impression. Waited about 20 minutes to be seated (it was a busy Saturday night so no big deal). When we were finally seated, it took about an hour and 15 minutes to get our food when other tables who were seated at about the same time as us received their food way ahead of our table. The handlebar was amazing. We stopped in from out of town just wanting a place to get a beer. My wife got the mac & cheese (spatzle) and it was the best we have ever tasted. First time going there, drinks were good. But I simply ordered a "Beer Cheese and Pretzels" something easy. The cheese was almost water and the pretzels were just bread bites with salt, they weren't even golden just white, very sad plate, we finished our drinks and left. In my opinion their food has gone downhill over the years. And many things don't stay consistent. The beer cheese is sometimes thick and sometimes soupy. I used to love the brewben but often the meat seems fatty/chewy. The spaztle is still good but they got rid of my favorite side of red cabbage. Due to all of this I just don't frequent this place as I once did. The only thing that saves this review is they've still got going is a great beer selection. read more

Cool Decor. Good Service. Great Beer Selection. Awesome Vegan Offerings. We stopped here because they started offering the vegan 'Impossible Burger' at their location. We found the decor to be very unique...including a series of windows that look into the attached bicycle shop. The ambience was laid back and the service was stellar, too. The reason we came, though, was the burger. We were disappointed that we were told the burger didn't feature a vegan mayo, or a vegan cheese, things found at other 'North State' establishments serving the burger, but we've learned since that it was a miscommunication. They DO in fact offer vegan mayo and a vegan cheese choice, something all places serving this burger should be doing; kudos to the Handle Bar for doing that! The ownership clearly recognizes what a draw the burger is for vegans, and they've got a couple vegan add-ons to really step the burger up. With that said, the burger was prepared nicely. And, as always, the patty itself was good. We can't wait to come back and try it again! read more

2 Stars due to the inability to cook food as requested, and measly meat portions. Have visited here a handful of times and usually order the HB Burger or Buffalo Chicken sandwiches. Consistently, the burgers are overcooked, despite ordering rare or medium rare. The last server blamed the difficulty in attaining the medium-rare request to the thin burger meat. Which leads me to question...why are they so thin then? Anyways, the Buffalo Chicken sandwich has great flavor, but is ALWAYS lacking in meat. We're talking a thin slice here! I've requested it to be thicker many times, but it always ends up the same. read more

Stopped in on Saturday at 4pm for a late lunch. I have never been here before but I thought the German style menu looked interesting. Upon sitting down I ordered Beer #22 off the menu. I was told it was tapped out and replaced with a different type of sour. I agreed and tried the replacement. It was a Peaches & Cream that actually was surprisingly delicious! I then ordered the Beer Cheese & Pretzels as an appetizer. The waitress told me they were out of Pretzels but they could do Crostini's with it instead. So far I was 0 for 2, both items I wanted off the menu were not available thus far. I said no thank you and ordered the Currywurst instead. She brought out the appetizer and it was hot and tasted great! I wasn't upset, as this was probably a way better idea than the beer cheese and pretzels were. I asked for a Brewben with Fries for my main course and a side of ranch. She waited until I finished my appetizer and then my food came out minutes after. Perfect. Except no ranch, no biggie there. Small reminder and she brought it out for me. I would say after all of that the most upsetting part was I wasn't given any napkins...at all. I just had the napkin that my silverware was rolled into for the entire duration of my meal. Sure, I could have once again reminded her of another thing she forgot but honestly I didn't feel comfortable doing so. But it would have been especially useful to have at least one additional napkin as I ordered a sandwhich. Something thay requires your hands not a fork. As the tender juiciness was oozing out of the bread I kept licking my fingers and dotting my napkin. Honestly I almost gave 4 stars because the food was great! Atmosphere was nice and relaxing. Cool place, you can see into the bike shop next door from where I sat. Hence the name "Handle Bar". Which I did not put two and two together until then. Pretty cool. Seated right away in a cozy corner of a side room adjacent to a bike shop. We were brought or menus and our orders taken right away. We decided to split an order of Mac and cheese spatzule. So delicious!! Then we split the chocolate mousse. It was all marvelous. read more

The service was great the food was just okay. We had a table of seven. In the beginning we asked if they would split the checks we've never had this problem anywhere else and they said no. So they brought one large check with everything mixed up and said we could pay three people at a time but it has to be split three ways equally. Didn't make any sense caused friction at our table. I even spoked to the manager wouldn't do anything for us to make things easier. Most of us were paying with a card. This really made it very awkward at our table. I have only been to the Handle Bar once, but I had a good experience overall. My only gripe is that they don't have much food, but then again, it is a bar. I tried the pretzel app which was pretty good, but the pretzel sticks they give you are not the best. I would suggest another soft pretzel instead. I did have a sampler which was cool and a decent price. Not sure I would go back again though. read more

This place is awesome! Authentic German dishes and flavors. Our order included a Caesar salad, Black Forest spatzle, roasted turkey sandwich and bratwurst sandwich. Tons of great options to choose from. The Spatzle was loaded with ham, mushrooms, and especially cheese! Everything was so much better than I could have hoped. The sandwiches came with sides; we chose garlic fries and German potato salad. The sandwiches were piled with goodies, lots of unique flavorful cheeses and sauces. Staff was very attentive and friendly, I got a complimentary side of ranch with our order. We don't drink beer but there were lots to try. Nice patio seating option as well. Waited about 35 minutes for a sandwich and a burger, which were both burnt. I guess they took the extra time to burn them. The sauerkraut salad used to be this really yummy purple sauerkraut salad that they made - now it's just out of container that they've bought and it tastes like crap. My husband and I were here several times before the remodel, and many times since. I do love the food. The Greek salad is a favorite. Nice and vinegary with plenty of feta and olives. The cheese and pretzels is super yum. Cheese has a definite beer flavor to it. The pastrami Reuben sandwich (cant remember the exact name right now) is crazy good!! Super thick slices of meat, omg so good. Pretty good sweet potato fries I like mine less crunchy, but if you love em crunchy, these are the ones for you! Cute place- beer selection great. Food: $pricey for the value. $260 for 8 people. Wonderful- 20th street salad with fresh berries. Loved it. Hubby and I ordered burgers: HD burger and the Basic burger. Our orders were mixed up? Basic burger didn't have the tomato, lettuce, pickles, onions, instead got cheese and fried shallots nothing else. HD burger had bacon, lettuce, Tom., pickles, shallots- hmm wrong ingredients. Ordered pretzel and cheese dip for 8 appetizers- they never came until end of our meal- cheese dip had congealed and pretzels hard. It was nice the waitress took these off the bill. No chilli avail. Potatoe salad way too vinegary. 3 people ordered (large portion) bowl of a ham spatzel meal. Don't remember name of it ?but maybe ate 1/4 of it. Salty - no one took it home. French fries over done. Lunch on Thursday was a huge failure. I've been here a few time and something is always a miss. The final straw was leaving more than 2 hours after we sat down for our lunch hour. The food is ok, pouring beer from a tap is not difficult, and they always have poor service. If it was just a bad waitperson I could get over it, if it was just a one off then Ok, at this point they obviously have terrible management. We sat while tables came and left, to go orders were picked up, and our request of concern was ignored. This poorly organized money grab will all come crashing down. My sister-in-law recommended this place based on what she saw online so our family of 7 and my brothers dog ate here for lunch over the weekend. Covid: they almost didn't let us sit together as a family because we had 7 instead of 6 but they did and we were thankful. They are doing their best to follow the guidelines. Vibe: it had a great vibe. The place was full out on the patio. Not packed but full and everyone was enjoying themselves. The patio was clean and spaced as well as could be given the size of it. Menu: there was a decent variety on the menu. Everyone in our party found something to eat. Flavor and Quality of Food: our family Gage the pastrami burger and the Buffalo chicken sandwich 10/10. They were delicious. Kids loved the chicken strips and fries, who doesn't? My brother and I each got one of the German pasta dishes. Mine the Mac and cheese was underwhelming. It was greasy and didn't really have a "sauce" (liquid). Don't get me wrong, there was cheese on it. My brother on the other hand had the stroganoff and had the opposite. His had plenty of sauce but was slightly sweet. We'd probably give them a 6/10. I probably wouldn't order them again but were editable and tasted okay. My husband finished mine. A few of us also got a garden salad and the were delicious too. If I go back I'll have to eat one of the 10/10 meals instead. Over all good experience and excellent customer service. read more

They just enlarged and updated their bar/restaurant. It looks great. Nice feel - ambiance now having the Handlebar have large windows to the next door bike shop. 27 or 28 beers on tap which to me seems a bit too much as some might not always be as fresh as possible. Bratworst sandwich is still delicious however (hopefully this was temporary) sadly their sauerkraut tasted like from a can. Unreal that in the sauerkraut they put chopped almonds and tomatoes. I used to love their authenically German red cabbage. This sauerkraut sucked. I'm betting this was a fluke as usually they have decent food. I also used to love their German style potatoes however today's side dish was missing the German style which has much more vinegar. Fortunately at least the texture (slightly hard) of the potatoes was right on. They've totally upgraded their kitchen, and since they just reopened with the expansion maybe like a new restaurant the kitchen has some relearning to do ... hopefully they've retained many of their former dishes on the menu and hopefully whomever is cooking now still has their old recipes of German red cabbage and German style potatoes as those are what has always drawn me to visit the Handlebar. Their owner was on site and sitting at the bar and I have confidence that he'll get the restaurant back up to the quality it was before their major upgrade. read more
