I had a solid experience at Handle Bar! I've taken a lot of cycling classes and this was my favorite one in Boston so far. Lots of class options at different times and a good variety of music and themed classes. The coach (Alexander) was great. The workout was well-structured and had a lot of options to modify and challenge yourself during the workout. The inside of the gym was clean and they have complimentary shoe rentals that you can wear if you don't have your own cycling shoes. I really appreciated this, unlike other cycling places that charge ridiculous fees for them. I loved that there were smaller class sizes (like 20 people) compared to other cycling classes I have been to that cram 40-50 into the room. The smaller class helped me feel more connected and present. The instructor can actually see everyone in the room too, so it helps feel more friendly in my opinion. I really enjoyed my experience here and would come back to Handle Bar over other cycling classes in the area. They also have discounts on classes and memberships for students, teachers, medical workers, and military, which is a great perk too! read more

The winter weather has been cramping my ability to run outdoors, so I decided to try HB! I've been to spin studios in the past and I was glad that this place met my expectations! Definitely a fantastic cardio option in Fenway! My first class was a Sunday morning class, and along with the sensory experience of the music and the light changes, the energy of the instructor and the class goers was CRAZY - definitely woke me up! I was surprised at how full the studio was (only 3 empty bikes). The 45 min class is choreo style, meaning you have a leading leg, ride to the beat of the music, and there's movements (e.g. 4 corners, tap backs), with about 5 minutes of arms using a weighted bar (it seems like everyone has the same bar) and stretching that begins 1.5 min until the end. The bikes don't have a monitor on it, nor a numeric number for resistance, so you follow the instructor's cues for how many turns to add on / go by feel. Pros: - Some of the most hype instructors I've seen recently! A++++ - The studio provides the cycling shoes! A++++ - Every bike has a towel on it! - Riders don't have to wipe down their equipment after (I think the staff does this), so it makes it easier to leave the studio. - Water fountain, ear plugs, hair ties, bobby pins, etc available Cons (minor): - For first-timers, it was hard to flag down a staff to help with setting up the bike because the studio was so packed and busy. - The studio is sort of small - the bikes are very much packed against each other and the hallway where people change their shoes and put stuff into lockers is narrow and gets very crowded. - Only two classes on Saturday and Sunday. Saw their studio way before others. 4 stars for the service, 75 minute New year's Eve special all with champagne and photo props! But to be real their decades remix was the same remix beat on top of every song from dancing Queen to Lizzie McGuire and even Billie Eilish. Awful music, boring EDM and unique choice of Christmas Celtic music to end the class. Air circulation could have been better. The girl cycling to my right generated a stronger breeze than the ceiling fans. They let us into the studio 3 minutes before start and we started two minutes late and ended two minutes late. No lockers, open cubbies for all, narrow walkways so it gets cramped, and try not to get hit by the door. read more

I want to love this more and leave 5 stars, all of the instructors have been amazing, times work better than other studios and I love the space inside. Some of the classes it is really hard to hear the instructor, I have noticed the past 2 times that it was a little easier to hear but there is an in-balance with the mic and music because it muffles the sound. The classes are outrageously expensive, there is no option to go as much as I want for a competitive price. As a young professional adult I save money and spending that much on a membership doesn't make sense. I have also sent notes to parter, get corporate discounts, their competitor down the street gives 15% off bulk classes and that helps me, but their team hasn't responded to my inquiry for months. read more

Leaving this review here given this is the primary location in Boston. Review is for the Big Night Live experience/location. Very brilliant idea on HBs part for renting out the BNL location. Absolutely incredible experience here and highly recommended. Between the lights, sound system, and ambiance of being in night club for a workout class, it makes me sad to think one day this will come to an end! Make sure to get into a HB class at Big Night live at TD Garden. Can't go wrong with any of the instructors or playlists! Mandatory to wear a mask during COVID but not that terrible given how big the space is so it doesn't get too hot and stuffy! They used to have discounted parking in the north station garage but given the pro teams starting that's no longer available. Still have been able to easily find street parking on non game days and easy access by orange and green line MBTA. I absolutely love this place! I started going recently, but it's fun, challenging, and welcoming. Meredith is amazing and made me feel like I've been going as long as everyone else. Margaret's 6 am classes are super inspiring and give me a great start to my day when I go to those. Another great perk is I believe they have someone on call in case you forget something. I have seen girls opening the doors even late on weekends. I think a man left his bag in there last Friday, and I walked by as she let him all the way inside to the bike room at 1:30 am! This is the only place where I can genuinely enjoy doing cardio! The choreography and staying on beat with the music makes the time fly. All of the instructors I've had are really friendly and supportive and make an effort to get to know you if you come a lot. I would only go if you live within walking distance. It's only a 15 minute drive from me, but I don't feel it's worth it. The instructors are fun, but having tried 3 other cycling places (moved away from Cyclebar, tried others with friends), this might be at the bottom of the list. It smells, it's cramped, it feels not clean, the bikes don't track your progress nor are they/the shoes in great shape, parking is really difficult which definitely adds time to my drive and if you miss a class even by less than five minutes you will be charged $25. It's not more convenient or more enjoyable even though it's technically closer to me (Fenway location) so I will probably be traveling to cyclebar instead. Or even F45, that's definitely a better workout for a comparable cost. You wont have a bad time if you go but there's so much better out there for the same cost. read more

I've been to a number of spinning studios in Boston and this is not at the top of my list. You have to wear clip-in shoes, and if you use class pass they charge you $2 to rent them. If you have to wear clip-ins I think they should provide them for anyone taking a class without making them pay extra. The instructor seemed pretty forced and scripted, and the room is really really dark. I like when studios turn down the lights but this was too much. I also didn't really like the music. Don't get me wrong--it was a good workout, and the weighted bar adds a twist to the usual hand weights, but it didn't have the personal feel that other studios have. read more

The two times I rode here were a blast! The instructors really know how to kick your butt. The first time I came here was about a year ago and there were 3 things I remembered: the music selection was very upbeat, the instructor was SOO motivating, and the ride was one of the hardest rides out of all of the cycling classes I've done. If you're a beginner or new to the studio, you'll feel very comfortable with the accommodating staff. They'll give you a bike number and check up on you to see if the bike is aligned correctly for your height. The ride incorporated a lot of booty and a section for arms with a bar weight. Cycling shoes are also complimentary. I came a second time in April of this year. They feature themed rides and one of them was a Lorde ride. I'm obsessed with Lorde and I love a good sweat so I signed up with Danielle. She honestly killed it; she had so much energy and was extremely sweet/motivating. The music/light/overall choreography fell in sync. We rarely sat on the bike seat and really challenged us with the resistance and speed. There were a lot of times where I couldn't keep up with the choreo but to be honest, that motivates me to come back to improve on my endurance/stamina. Came here on a $10 first class! It was easy to get set up. Complimentary shoes and ear plugs (thank god because I was right next to the speaker), and someone helped me set up my bike (though they seemed not too excited and a bit hard to flag down...only mentioning because this was a bit lacking compared to other spinning studios I've been to). I took Eve Morocco's 60 minute class and it was super challenging. I haven't sweat this much in forever. I can understand why her class books up so quickly. My tip if you can choose a spot to sit is to choose the bikes that are facing the podium. I was off to the edge which sucked because I had to keep turning to see what Eve was doing. This studio space has cubbies without doors for storing stuff. It's pretty open so I guess someone could steal your stuff. The other studios ive been to at least have scramble locks. read more

My first visit (only $10!) was awhile back. It kicked my butt so I retreated back to my usual and more familiar jogging routine. I was in desperate need of more intensity and consistency so I recently signed up for their 1 month unlimited special for $100. This easily was the best $100 that I've spent since moving to Boston. I'd sign up for a classes online a week in advance (there are lots of options for working professionals -- early morning, lunch, and post-work day class options, most are 45 minutes in duration). You're charged if you don't cancel within 12 hrs. This policy was really helpful -- it kept me from backing out last minute (getting motivated to get up off the couch and work out is always the hardest part!). I went to 18 (!) classes during my 1 month membership. Every class kicked my butt -- I always left drenched in sweat and raging with endorphins from the awesome workout. The music is fun and fast paced (it's sometimes a little too loud if you sit by the speakers). The instructors are very motivating; They definitely pushed me beyond what I'd do if working out solo. My favorites are Eve and Danielle. There's some choreography intermixed (if you're self conscious -- consider reserving one of the bikes in the back row) and there's always a song or two dedicated for arm exercises. A great cycling studio! A great way to up your work out and have fun. It feels like you're at a club without the sketchy parts -- and you get A LOT sweatier. Great workout! The location is centrally located in Fenway and the staff here is so nice. Shoe rentals are free at Handle Bar which is a plus, most places will charge you extra to rent cycling shoes. Even though rentals are free, if you spin often I would recommend buying yourself a pair with Delta Look clips (for this location). I have been to their South End location and the bikes there are primarily SPD clips. Comparing the two locations, I like the class set up at Fenway significantly better. At the South End location, the bikes are really close together and are awkwardly placed in my opinion. I have purchased the monthly unlimited pass twice now and i have accumulated about 50 classes (comes out to roughly $7 a class for me GREAT DEAL!). The studio is very clean and well supplied. Once you get there, you initial next to your name and then place your things in the cubbies. If you need help with your bike set up, they are more than willing to help you out, but once you go more you will figure out how to set your bike up yourself. All you need to truly bring to class is a bottle of water and a positive attitude; clean towels are included. Recommended instructors: -Matthew LaPierre: He's my favorite! He has so much energy and his music/choreo is on point. Not only will you feel satisfied with the great workout, but it will have you leaving class with more energy than at the start of class. My favorite rides are his 60 minute sessions on Sundays. -Lena Rakijan: Literally an arm workout! Of all the instructors at the Fenway HB location, she has the toughest arm song/section of them all. Her endurance on the bike is also amazing and she will make you work with 110% effort. I love her music choice, but I recommend being more of an experienced/high endurance rider to keep up with her in her classes. -Cara Tramontozzi: She is too cute! I love the way she runs class. She has you leaving class energized and satisfied. These three instructor's night classes fill up so I recommend reserving a bike at least a day or two ahead of the scheduled time. I find that that closer you ride to the instructor, the more motivating the atmosphere is, so I prefer to ride usually in the middle section of class. But regardless of where you ride, with a positive and motivated attitude you will get a fun and productive workout. Most of the instructors will get to know you if they notice you ride with them often or you can introduce yourself first! They are all really down to earth people and make you feel very welcome. I would highly recommend people HB for a great workout! Student walk ins- $15/class Transportation: Green D line (Fenway stop) Parking is mostly street parking. While I commend The Handle Bar for trying to be a unique spin program, I don't agree with their classes. It is so dark in the studio that it's difficult for in-ride adjustments if necessary. There should be an electronic monitor attached to every bike to show the rider how fast they're going, their wattage, time, etc in order for the rider to gauge how hard they're working- a pulse monitor would be nice as well. Simply riding as fast as you can to the pace of the amped up instructor and dance musice does not help you achieve your workout goals. I was very alarmed when the instructor wanted us to do crunches on the bike or lift weighted bars WHILE CYCLING. Every cycling instructor here and elsewhere seems to be "certified" by some program but I would be blown away if any of those programs were overseen by an orthopedic physician as I can't imagine that doing other improper forms of exercise while engaged in pedaling would be without risk of injury. Not once did the instructor go over efficient pedaling and muscle mechanics on up and down strokes to get the most out of each crank revolution. I found this perplexing as all of their bikes have clipless pedals and require you to use a pair of cycling shoes they provide (if you don't have your own)- but I'm not a fan of using for indoor riding and I don't want to wear shoes that hundreds of other people have sweat in. It just seemed weird that they would use technical pedals but not go over any of the mechanics of proper pedaling form. The studio is clean and the staff are very nice, but it was disappointing to see that the class is inspired by a Zumba-style program as so many other workout classes in the city seem to be following. I am an avid class pass user and enjoy bopping around to the many spin studios in Boston. I love HandleBar for its accessibility to Longwood - as I work in the area. It's also a great place to hit up if you're in town in many of the hotels in the area. In this particular studio there is one room with bikes and no shower - which can be a negative when I'm going to straight to work. The classes are a unique dance energy. I'm not one for choreography as I get lost in what I'm supposed to be doing vs the work out - To clarify this is not a negative. The dance moves are easy to follow and the instructors are always upbeat. The music is loud, but I don't have to wear ear plugs. The bikes are close, but the choreography is always conscious of this and you definitely don't feel anyone's breath on your back. The cubbies are in a long alley which always causes a traffic jam if you are going in/out. However, besides the congestion and the lack of showers, I always look forward to my classes here. read more

Came here for a Dana Farber fundraiser class & damn Mattheuw was a REALLY GREAT teacher. For the first time in yrs. I could actually be in a class without feeling like I was going deaf & felt like the arm section was REALLY HARD. He was wonderfully choreographed, personable, had a great play list, and was approachable for Q and A after about anything related to cycling. I would highly recommend this location & staff, too. I've taken cycling classes at a variety of studios (SoulCycle being one of them) and the Handlebar is by far the best. Being a broke college student, I really appreciate that the prices per class here and the packages are super fair and affordable. Not only that, but I also appreciate how they don't charge you for shoe rentals here (*cough cough SoulCycle). It's just really not cool when studios charge you for shoe rentals *sigh. I've taken classes here with almost all the instructors and liked them all, but I really loved Matthew and Lena. They really know how to have a badass time on the bike and they push you until you feel like crying, which sound bad, but is actually fantastic! I always get a kickass workout with them and the classes are just tons of fun. The studio itself is really clean and cozy and I always leave the place happy and high on endorphins. I've raved about it to all my friends and have actually gotten a couple of my close friends addicted to this place so that we've become regulars at the studio now. I highly highly recommend this place to not only cycling enthusiasts, but to people that simply want to have fun while they exercise. Took a Saturday morning class with my girlfriends and my BF. We were able to book our seats late Friday night online and it was quick and easy. FIRST CLASS for first timers is only $10. After your 1st visit, each class is $24; with a student ID is $15 per class. FENWAY location is small and does NOT have a shower. They have small cubbies when you enter. They also have free hair ties and free ear plugs! (Oh Yes! please and thank you) Since My BF and I were trying indoor cycling at Handle Bar for the first time, we decided to come to class 10-15 min. early. (I ADVISE NEWBIES TO DO SO AS WELL!) Our instructor was Allie and she was amazing. She was really sweet and gave my BF and I the inside scoop on how are class is run and how she keeps everything to the "beat of the music." She even helped us lock in our shoes, adjust our bikes, and get used to bike we were on. She was great at keep us all motivated and her music choice was ON POINT. I felt great after the workout, even though I had to leave a couple of min. early. The only CON is that unlike the other locations, Fenway does not have showers... Trust me after a cycling class the first thing you want to do is shower. I really found myself love working out and trying to find new ways to do cardio. This spot opened up next to my job about a couple months ago and I've been intrigued ever since as I've never tried a cycling class before. I went with a friend/coworker we were like the blind leading the blind; but everyone who works there was very helpful. Cara was our instructor and she was great in helping us figuring out how to attach our special shoes to the pedals. Overall the class was fun, exciting and challenging. It was my first spin and lemme tell ya I'll be back again... The studio: extremely clean and tasteful. Freakin face wash in the bathroom - how often do you see face wash in the bathroom? Towels, water and everything you need. The equipment: they used to charge $2 for shoes, but I believe the studio has then raised the prices and now shoes are included. These shoes will change the way you spin. Just make sure you know how to unclip once you clip - I had an awkward moment there :) The instructors: for the first time in my experience with Boston classes, the instructor welcomed me to the class, showed how everything works and was super helpful to me as a first timer. Doesn't happen often. The class itself: always wondered how do people not get bored spinning for an hour, but now I know. You spin sitting, you spin standing, you do crunches, you pop your back (this will make sense once you are in class). Music is fantastic and you will truly have a great time! :) Would I change anything? Well, not quite, except that this place is expensive. This review is coming from someone who is a frequent spinner and doesn't need much assistance with bike setup. Basically, I couldn't give you a review as a new spinner. My first few classes at The Handle Bar were a little tough. I went right when they first opened in Fenway and I just couldn't get into the groove here. Several months later I needed to find a workout right after work that was close by and The Handle Bar had a class that fit that need. Folks, instructor and music are KEY to a good ride. I've now found my fave instructors (Cara, Lena and Ashley) and now The Handle Bar is a staple in my weekly workout routine. I LOVE THEM! These instructors teach with ease, have great music and really know how to motivate a room. I have to say that I don't find that to be the case with EVERY instructor at this studio. Clip-in shoes are a must here. Bring your own or you can rent a pair for free. There are no showers at this location, but they do have two bathrooms that you can use for changing. They also don't have lockers. I know that someone is at the front desk, but it just totally weirds me out to just have my goodies in a cubby. Tip: Don't leave anything valuable in your bag here. The Handle Bar is a great workout, a nice addition to the neighborhood and I'm so glad that I gave the studio another try! read more

I definitely struggled with giving an exercise place a positive rating since I STRONGLY dislike exercise, but this place is legit! I was visiting a girlfriend and this place is within walking distance of her apartment so we went over for an 8:15am class. For my first class it was only $10 and that included the shoes. The location is clean and the class was a serious workout! The instructor made a point to offer assistance once she found out it was my first class and she had the right amount of energy for that time of day! I am used to spinning at my gym so I was surprised when we pulled out the weight bar and worked our arms but that was a great way to make it a full body workout. I was shocked when the 45 minutes was up and glad I found such a clean, we'll run spot to get a quick work out in while traveling. read more

I started cycling because of my time at The Handle Bar. The first class I ever went to was with Stephen. He was awesome, and played great music. One of the reasons I don't give it 5 stars is because the other instructors don't play good music sometimes (too much random EDM). It's a great workout that will leave you drenched in sweat. The instructor usually asks if anyone is new at the beginning of class which can be helpful. If you don't know how to click into the bike people are more than happy to assist. However, sometimes they don't turn the fans on which can feel like your cycling in 90 degree weather which is a bit much. It's too bad they don't have showers, because I would definitely come before work if I could. The space is overall very clean. SO much fun!! I tried my first Handle Bar spin class last week and LOVED it! I am a huge fan of spin classes so was definitely excited to try a new studio. The energy of the instructor (Meredith) was contagious and kept the class going the entire time. KILLER workout for arms during the second to last song (they were definitely sore the next day). I have been going to the Handle Bar since I moved here in June. From Day 1, I have consistently been greeted with friendly people, and all of the classes are excellent! I have taken classes with Cara, Lena, Eve, Sarah C and everyone has their own style and slightly different taste in music so just find an instructor who moves you! The studio is great, clean with 2 bathrooms, places to put your belongings and spin shoes which are now included with your classes. I used to hate going to spin classes but I immediately became hooked to these. There is enough variety to keep me interested and I really enjoy that there is strength incorporated within each class (every class has you doing crunches, chest presses, dips and 1 song is always dedicated to just arms using a bar). Water and apparel is sold at the studio as well. HIGHLY recommend! I actually look forward to working out now! Beginners should definitely show up at least 10 minutes before class and the staff is always more than happy to give you a tour and show you how to clip in. Super small waiting area for the class, not enough space to walk around. Long line to check in meant some folks were waiting outside in the rain to get in, the layout could use some help. I've taken a lot of spin classes at different studios and they usually have shoes that clip into the bikes. A lot of commercial gyms have the clips but also have cages so you can wear your own shoes without needing to be clipped in and I wish more studios had that style. The instructor did not open the room until less than 10 minutes before class started even though there was no class immediately prior to this one. This made the set up process feel very frantic and rushed, which I am not here for. I could not clip into the bike myself and so I asked for help and the staff member helping spent several minutes trying to clip my shoes in, she could not manage it, so in a room completely full of people on a bike front and center (class pass won't let you choose your bike, it is automatically assigned) she brought over a second staff member. I got very upset about this because the whole process felt so jumbled between how little time we had to set up and being in a room full of people with two staff members trying to clip me in. I felt bad for the poor girl who was trying, she was super nice about the whole thing and tried her very best to explain the issues and why this isn't the first time it's happened. I wound up needing to leave because the whole process made me so anxious that I could not handle staying in that room. I've literally never had this much trouble before. This was my first time at this studio and I won't be returning. read more

I just moved to Boston (Fenway area) and conveniently for me the Handle Bar is located within walking distance of my apartment! I'm currently on the new client one-month unlimited plan and have gone to 3 classes so far. Each has been absolutely incredible but immensely challenging - seriously, I don't think I've ever sweat this much in any spin class. Part of it is the energy of the room (lots of experienced and very fit riders, lots of humidity) and also the lack of fans, but I think it's therapeutic to sweat it all out! I have been to Sarah, Raisa, and Alessandra's classes and they are all terrific instructors with infectious energy. If you are new to spinning you might want to take it easier your first class because there is a ton of new choreography that even I haven't experienced before, but you get the hang of it after several classes. If you like runs out the saddle this is the PERFECT studio for you because there are so so many runs (128 bpm runs)!! Almost every other song is a run or a jog (sometimes back-to-back), but it's really great cardio. Less hills, but the hills we do are super heavy. Also, arms are difficult because you only have one option of a 6-pound bar and a lot of the movements center around one-arm presses. Overall, I look forward to coming back for more, and I would 110% recommend Handle Bar to anyone seeking an INTENSE workout. read more

My first class was with Matt L, and I have taken a lot of spin classes and this was definitely one of the best! He had great energy, music, and variety in the ride. I like the bar for arms, interesting twist but still gets those arms burning. The entire studio is very clean and the staff very nice, the lack of lockers is my only concern-not a full on complaint but lockers would be nice. My other suggestion for the Handle Bar, especially the Fenway location since it is so close to Longwood where many 12 hour shifts start at 7am, is a 5:30am class. I've been on the hunt for a convenient, good early morning workout and this would be the perfect spot!! read more

Small yet very clean indoor cycling studio. Staff is super friendly and class was engaging enough. I will come back for sure! They offer discounts to newbies and students. My only complains are the following: The bikes are WAY too close to each other compared to other studios I have attended. Also, there were ceiling fans that for some reason weren't turned on during my class, which was disappointing since you sweat like crazy during a 45 min spinning workout. Enjoyed a 45 minute ride today. Meredith was the instructor and would highly recommend her class. She has awesome energy, very positive and affirming intra-ride comments, and explains the bike movements she wants you to do in a clear and concise way. I've been going to Handlebar for two years now, and I feel compelled to write a review. I am a cyclist - it's my passion. Hence, winter has traditionally been a tough time for me because I have to give it up. Two winters ago, I discovered Handlebar and have been totally hooked ever since. It is obvious that they go out of their way to hire absolutely exceptional instructors at Handlebar, and the classes absolutely fly by. The Handle a Bar is a great addition to the neighborhood, and the owners have definitely made strong use of the space. Everything is clean and staff are friendly. Clientele is super welcoming and diverse. There are special themed rides, which are awesome and make exercise much more fun. I've been here three times and have the following feedback: 1) A pulse monitor would be helpful so that one can see how fast they're going...especially relative to others 2) Turn up the lights a bit so that people can make necessary adjustments 3) Host a series of intro level classes for newbies to spin so that they're not intimidated by the regular classes. obsessed!!! I have been going to Handle Bar for a while now and this is by far my favorite cycle studio in the city. The staff at all three studios are super friendly. The studios are very clean and they do an incredible job to clean up the studio in between classes. Due to my schedule I have mainly gone to Matthew and Lena classes and they are amazing instructors. Really encouraging and really push you throughout the class and they mix up the choreography every week so I never feel bored. If you have to pick one cycle studio in Boston I highly recommend you trying Handle Bar out. You will not be dissapointed!!! read more

As an avid classpasser, I've been to my fair share of spin studios and the Handle Bar has always been one of my favorites. Their bikes have the smoothest ride in the city and the studio always seems clean and smells about as good as a spin class can smell. I bring my own shoes so I can't really attest to the quality of their rentals. One point off for sticking classpassers in the worst seats and rarely turning the fan on. I usually go to the 60 minute weekend classes and would say it's a little challenging for a beginning, although I suppose you can always skip choreography if you're struggling. I really enjoy classes at The Handle Bar. Eve is my favorite instructor, but you have to try different instructors to see who you like the best. The atmosphere at the studio is fun and laid-back, which I like a lot. I don't like to feel like I am competing with people next to me. If you are new, they will help you with bike setup and make sure you know what you are doing. I always get a great workout here. read more
