Located inside Giants Farmer Market in Hackensack, this establishment can be found toward the back of the store. Being a newcomer, although I was 1 person, I did want to try more than one dish. After speaking with the one of the owners, I landed on a small oxtail/jollof rice dish ($18.99) and a combo plate of beef suya/jollof rice ($16.99). As I'm writing, in 2026, for a food stall --- that is a pricier tag than I'm used to, but then again, I've never had African Cuisine before, either. I waited about 20-25 minutes for my food (I didn't mind --- fresh is BEST!), so I just walked Main St. for a bit, then finished by touring the Farmers Market. After some time, the food was promised at the time I was told. That was good. Let's start with the main character: Oxtail and Jollof Rice. The oxtail was extremely tender and flavorful, I could tell it's been simmering on the stove-top for quite some time. The collagen was just melting right off! The jollof rice was drier than I expected. Having seen many videos of jollof rice on YouTube, I was expecting it to be a bit more wetter? Maybe. However, I think their "drier" version works since the oxtail is served with its sauce that it's been stewed it for quite some time. The suya? This was interesting. I got it "spicy"; it was a nice tickle. It was strips of beef with onion in this peanut-spice combo that was very earthy and aromatic. It felt like a cousin of Szechuan & curry, but with other flavor profiles as well. It was different! I'm glad I got to expirement with some of the African food offered at Viola Afrique! Overall, 4/5 experience. The owner was lovely to speak to, the food was good, just -1 simply for the prices. It's 2026. I get it. ;/

My boyfriend got the wings (spice: extra hot) and I got the wrap (spice: lemon and herb); the chicken itself was super yummy and flavorful, but the extra hot spice level wasn't spicy enough for my boyfriend. We also got the cassava fries and corn for sides, which I highly recommend. You should definitely check this place out if you're nearby!

I chose the Lemon & Herb flavor for one and the Medium spice for the other. It took a little while for the food to come out, but it was worth the wait. The chicken had a nice grilled and roasted flavor, and it was juicy throughout. The Lemon & Herb had great flavor, while the Medium spice had a nice little kick to it. I also ordered a large Peri Fries ($5.95). They were lightly battered, seasoned with peri salt, and crispy on the outside. Solid fries that I really enjoyed. Overall, I enjoyed my meal, and the BOGO deal made it an even better value. I would recommend this place if you're looking for tasty grilled chicken with plenty of flavor.

Cuisine: 9 Service: 7…read moreDecor: 4 Value: 9 Overall: 9 I am not an expert in West African cuisine, but all I can say about the food here is, "Holy shit! It's good!" The setup inside this dimly lit restaurant had a bunch of steam tables offering various beef and chicken dishes, a handful of rice options, and a bunch of salads/fruits. Having no idea what we were looking at, we asked the friendly owner for some advice. After some contemplation, two of us made a plate with all beef over some jollof rice, and another with basically all chicken items over a different type of flavorful rice. We knew it was too much, but our goal was to figure out what we would come back for. Honestly, I did not enjoy most of the chicken because it's sitting in steam trays getting overcooked. Not saying they were terrible, but it all fails in comparison to all the great beef offerings. OMG! You really can't go wrong with any of the beef dishes. My cuisine rating is really based on the various beef items, the yummy veggies, and both amazing rice. The current price is $10.99 per pound regardless what you fill your box with, except a couple of items. We filled our two boxes with about 4lbs of food. Obviously too much, but we got to try many things. No doubt I will be back asap for round two.
