From a former fan of the Happy Egg until they implemented a so-called credit card fee (something they had not done last year) after introducing their new menus early in 2026. In speaking with others in the restaurant business, they say included in the menu price is not only their food costs, but also all their overhead costs - including credit card processing fees - so begs the questions, why do some places add a fee for using a credit card? So I did a bit of research, and here is what I found: NC is moving toward tighter regulations A 2025 bill (House Bill 13) proposes: * A 2% cap on surcharges * Mandatory disclosure at the entrance and point of sale * A ban on surcharges if the business only accepts credit cards It hasn't fully passed yet, but it has momentum. If it becomes law, it will standardize what restaurants can charge and how they must disclose it. Check whether the fee applies to all cards If the restaurant charges the same fee for: * debit cards NOTE: Happy Egg, my server told me, charges 4% to use a Debit Card * credit cards * even prepaid cards ...that's a red flag. Why: Debit card processing is much cheaper. Charging the same fee across the board suggests the fee isn't tied to actual processing costs -- it's just extra revenue layered on top of already‑priced‑in costs. Look for "cash discount" language If the receipt says: * "Non‑cash adjustment" (Happy Egg charges 4% to use a credit card) * "Cash discount applied" ...but the menu prices are already high, it often means: * the "cash discount" is just the real price, * and the card price is inflated on top of it. This is one of the most common double‑dip setups. How to spot when a 6. Watch for restaurants that only recently added a fee If you've been going to a place for years and suddenly see: * a new 3-4% fee * with no change in menu prices ...it's very likely they simply added the fee without adjusting their pricing structure. I had high hopes when visiting The Happy Egg, but ultimately, I was left a bit dissatisfied. The restaurant is located in front of the Food Lion shopping center on Main Street, just north of downtown. There is plenty of parking in front of the restaurant, as well as in the shopping center. We arrived for breakfast one Saturday at 9am. There were only two servers working at that time--and they were hustling--but two additional (much-needed) servers arrived just before 9:30am. We were seated very soon after our arrival. My husband and I both had coffee, and this was the first letdown. Their coffee is hot, but very WEAK. It was almost undrinkable. For our entrees, I ordered a Happy Egg platter with scrambled eggs (with added cheddar), bacon (requesting crispy), a cheddar biscuit, and grits. My husband ordered the corned beef hash with two over-medium eggs, an English muffin, and country ham as his side. We only waited about ten minutes for our food, and the portions were large. Of our two meals, my husband enjoyed his more than I did mine. He liked that they make the corned beef hash from scratch--so it's the shredded kind--and his eggs were perfectly cooked. The country ham was good as well. English muffin had something green on both sides of the inside (avocado from another plate, maybe), but he set it aside and didn't eat it. The manager offered another, but he didn't really need it, and turned it down. My dish was lackluster. My eggs were a bit over cooked, and the cheese wasn't suitably melted. In addition to the eggs, I wasn't a fan of the grits. They seemed flavorless, unaided by the added cheese. On a positive note, the bacon was thick and cooked perfectly crispy without being overdone, and the biscuit was large and soft inside. They brought butter in cups which was easy to spread--a nice touch. Our server was prompt and friendly, and we could see the manager, other servers, and staff working hard to keep dining at a good pace. The prices were reasonable and the portions were great, but the terrible coffee and my average plate doesn't justify a return. read more

so it's been a week and business is good but not slammed and I get sat immediately and get coffee, water, and a menu (by the time I leave there's a couple larger parties waiting for tables to open) I go for a country nest with two eggs up on a bed of cheesed grits plus a biscuit. grits are a little creamier than I am used to but maybe that's the gravy talking? don't matter cuz it's still good with the eggs and a dose of the red and there's a biscuit too! still smiling because breakfast is good :-) read more

My boyfriend and I stopped by Happy Egg on Sunday for a late breakfast/brunch and absolutely loved it! It's a smaller spot, but already super popular -- and I totally get why. I ordered the fried chicken breakfast bowl, and it did not disappoint. The chicken was crispy, the eggs were cooked perfectly, and everything had amazing flavor. But honestly, the biscuits stole the show -- big, fluffy, buttery perfection. We both agreed they were the best part of the meal. The staff were friendly, and the food came out fresh and hot. Visiting this area and heard about this newly opened restaurant. On Sunday morning it was packed with 30 minutes or more wait. Glad we called ahead for reservation. Despite the crowd the restaurant relatively quiet. Servers were friendly and attentive. The California Benedict was delicious. Tasty hollandaise. Tried this placed on a Monday for lunch to go. It's been open for about 2 weeks. Inside was busy and overheard people asking for the special to be put on the daily menu. That gave me good hopes. Not many places have had good results in this location because it's kind of hidden. Got home, order was correct which is a big plus. All the food seems to be made from scratch and homemade. All of it fresh, well seasoned, and it tasted yummy. Will definitely be a new go to place. I have lived in Mooresville for 30 years and have heard multiple locals tell me it is amazing everything you get is cooked to your liking not just sending it out however they like it. We go out for breakfast/brunch 4 to 5 days a week in the Lake Norman area. We're always delighted for another option. Especially in Mooresville. The new Happy Egg didn't disappoint. Clean and new and opened by an excellent chef formerly from another breakfast/lunch restaurant in the LKN area. We had a special version of Huevos Rancheros. Great! The service and food was great! We got the classic breakfast and the hot chicken omelette and left full and happy. If you go you HAVE to get a cheddar biscuit as your bread. Also tried their potato cake and it was so YUM, would definitely get it again.
