All kinds of hats that are customizable to your liking and I love how she teaches you what looks good and what works for you on the hat style that you are looking for. I love, love, love this place! The Hat Shop has a variety of seasonal hats to suit every occasion, from a day at the beach to a day at the derby. I've bought several that look as good years later as they did the day I bought them. The staff is incredibly helpful and accommodating; I have very particular taste but often defer to their judgment. Don't be deterred by some of the more eccentric/artistic hats if you have more conservative sartorial leanings, like I do: they have plenty to suit you, too. One of the things I like best about this place is that they use primarily New York based milliners and ornamentation--like ribbons and silk flowers--from New York based craftsmen. On my past three visits, I have purchased a magenta fedora, a blue fur pouf cocktail hat, and a robin's egg blue Easter bonnet. The fedora has come in very handy on cool, frosty days and the bonnet is being held in reserve for the perfect ensemble and occasion. The pouf is also awaiting a special evening occasion. Beyond the beauty of the product is the stellar customer service I receive at the hands (and eyes) of not only Linda Pagan, the shopmistress, but also her very capable staff, Miranda and Marla. During my most recent trip, I brought in a vintage hat that was given to me by a friend, but it needed the black elastric strap added (you know, that one that stretches along the back of your skull to keep the hat in place). I thought they would just direct me to where I could purchase one. But, instead, Miranda just popped one into place on the spot, with no charge. read more

I'm surprised no one has reviewed this lovely little shop. This is a store with personality. They are definitely a part of the neighborhood, complete with a guy who sits in the store all day just to gab with the owner. It was really hot the day I visited, and I wasn't thinking, "Hmmm, I think I need a nice warm hat for my already sweat-soaked head." But I couldn't resist their selection. They had a good variety of hats, costing from $20 to $500. Many of them were simple, elegant pieces with unique little touches. Others were decorated with flashy feathers and other ornate objects. It's never pleasant shopping for a funeral. But some places can make it easier. The Hat Shop was that place. I lost a really good friend and his funeral is in 3 days. I bought the dress, the shoes, and needed a hat. A hat to cover my eyes. A hat to be honest...a hat he'd say "You go girl" to. After all I'm still a New Yorker and a lady of Barbadian heritage. I looked on Yelp and had a few shops I thought I would check out, and walked from Bloomingdales to The Hat Shop. I walked into a room of ladies and some gents trying on hats, smiling, one verbally grateful that hats were "back in", so now she's ahead of times. Greeted with a smile, I felt a little lighter. I tried on a few hats that were nice but not what I envisioned. I just sat on the bench and looked around. I guess the gravity of the reason why I was there started to set in. Never did I feel rushed, or out of place. I watched one lady try on a hat and I thought, should I take it off of her head or just patiently wait. I took it off (blame it on the grief) KIDDING! I waited. Asked if she would mind if I tried it on, and she smiled and said, that's the one. One of the sales lady tried to tell me how I could use the hat in different ways, all great suggestions, but really I plan to wear this hat once. It's perfect, but once is all I can bear. I will donate the hat, the dress, (not the shoes- Michael kors...yum). They were so sweet, so kind, I know I left them in a somber mood, however if they knew Mike they'd know he'd probably be laughing at them and telling them to "f--king cheer up." I love hats and am willing to spend money on one that fits, with that said... I purchased a hat which was to be custom made. When I went to pick it up, it was too big, clearly it was the same hat that I had tried on in the store (which was too big). I was told by the owner, all I had to do was add an elastic string (like the ones used for halloween masks) to hold it on my head (she was not joking). Since I've never seen a man having to use an elastic to keep on his fedora, I don't think I should need one for mine either...maybe for one of those cute little I Love Lucy hats maybe, but a fedora, uh I don't think so, it should fit without having to worry it will blow off in the wind, period. If you have a regular size head, and can buy off the rack, than they have a decent selection. As for custom made, for me anyway, it did not exist, let alone the lack of customer care. read more

I have a new found love of hats. (I bought 2 this weekend) My counterpart on the other hand, has always loved hats and has been looking for a particular 'paper boy' hat for as long as we've dated. Every time we walk into a store that sells hats, he's always searching for this hat but we could never find it. We'd find 'versions' of it, but it wasn't ever exactly right. I was beginning to think this hat only existed in his head. He came to visit me in NYC from LA this weekend and he told me he saw someone on his flight wearing this hat. So, the supportive gf that I am joined him on his quest for the imaginary hat. I came here on a Saturday with a girlfriend of mine, as she was picking up a special order Cuban-style fidora, and I found the space to be intimate with loads of extremely high quality made pieces. On a recent trip to New York from Texas I Yelped ahead of time and this shop and it's reviews stood out as a must hit before I left. Even though it was dreary and cold when we stopped by the Hat Shop owner was just as warm and inviting as could be. Coming from Texas there aren't too many milliners (if any at all) given the weather and it really being too hot of a climate facilitate snazzy hat wearing. What makes this place so special (besides the owner of course) is that each hat can be completely customized in any number of hues, in felted mink, panama hats, pageboys, and any other style and color of your imagining pretty much. They measure your head to make sure that the fit is custom to you and Linda works in close relation to the milliners themselves. It is a hat lovers heaven. They have this one milliner in particular (I forgot to get their name) that does a technique called dip-dying. Essentially what it is is taking a light colored hat and hand dipping it into a darker colored dye that wicks into the fabric and leaves an awesome uneven dye line that separates the two distinct hat colors. They only currently make it in 2 colors, light grey with indigo, or camel with charcoal grey. I am a very happy owner of the camel/charcoal variety but it was a really tough choice because they both look so rad. I can't wait til the weather gets cold enough to wear my new felt hat :) read more

Very Bad experience with the arrogant owner. Ordered a custom made hat and came to pick it up. The hat was not made properly. Crown was wrinkled and bound edge was not rounded, but crooked. Person who was working at that time insisted it's a beauty of handmade. It's almost a $300 hat to be compromised by the word. She told me that they will try to fix, but I received a call next week by the owner and said the same thing. BEAUTY of HANDMADE. I was forced to get a refund by her saying that I would never satisfy. It's my big mistake that I didn't take photos of the hat so I can share it with people who are reading my review! To top it off, I only received a partial refund, but didn't even want to bother myself to talk to her again. I already purchased a hat from the store and was going to be a loyal customer by coming back constantly. However, I am very glad that I realized the owner's attitude how she treats a customer. I will never come back to the store. **I try to leave a review when I had a terrible experience, so people get a hint before their visit. read more

Given all the other rave reviews, I would highlight that my review relates to those who are looking for more generic hats rather than custom hats. I purchased a hat here for sun protection about a year ago. It's definitely my fault for not shopping around enough but I was looking for something more original and fun but I ended up with a pretty generic hat that had I looked a little harder, I would have found it online or in department stores at 1/3rd the price I paid. I was extremely disappointed when I realized the price I paid for the hat was more than double the price of it when I saw it at a Four Seasons Resort, which really disappointed me. read more

The owner is a delight, both knowing and knowledgeable about what will look FABULOUS on you. What to wear and HOW to wear it. LInda Pagan not only personifies individual style, her presence graces the neighborhood. My wife has bought a lovely hat, her indecision at the number of choices resolved, when it was placed on her her head by Ms. Pagan herself. I recently bought a hat for the teenage son of a good friend. He was unsure. Ms. Pagan's assistant walked him in and out of the mirror half a dozen times, showing him how a young man wear a hat--as opposed to plopping it down "as seen on TV" or in the movies. The hat is now a permanent fixture on his head, except, of course, at dinner. I have bought hats for 25 years at J&J Hat Center, but will buy my next hat at The Hat Shop, which is actually between Prince and Spring, closer to Prince, across from Omen. This store is a godsend! My boyfriend and I needed hats for the upcoming "Jazz Age" party on Governor's Island and really didn't even know where to start in looking for them. I really never wear hats since, I swear, I have about 8 lbs of wild, curly hair on top of my head and hats have always really made me feel self-conscious about that. But, since my outfit for the party really calls for a hat, I sucked it up and started looking online for one to buy. No luck. Either the sizing sounded off or it wasn't the style I was looking for. I decided to look local and lo & behold, Yelp brought me to Linda & The Hat Shop. I stopped by the store a couple of weekends ago, not really knowing what to expect. Within minutes Linda made me feel absolutely at home and was plopping hats on top of my head, telling me which ones would work for my face shape and the outfit I would be wearing to the party. I settled on a gorgeous Abigail Aldridge panama hat with lovely detailing and trim. To be completely honest, I've never put on a hat and felt like it *belonged* on me, but this one did. The shape, the framing of my face, the way my hair flowed out around the bottom...everything was perfect. Linda informed me that in order to get an even better fit, she would have to custom order one for me. Plus, I could pick the colors that would best go with my outfit. Just over a week later, my hat was in and it was completely perfect! My boyfriend went back and bought a hat and it, also, looks fantastic. He didn't have to custom order his since it fit just fine. The Hat Shop isn't cheap, but you are paying for quality -- plus you are supporting a local business (something of which NYC seems to be losing rapidly these days). From the moment I walked in, everyone was kind, knowledgeable and helpful. The first hat I was given to try on was beautiful, but far more than I wanted to spend. However, they were happy to help me find something within my price range, and I still walked out with a chic, quality hat that rendered many compliments the next day... I wandered over and although they had some great styles and different types of product, they didn't have the shape/color/size I needed - however, the lovely and stunning Katherine (Catherine) said no problem, we'll make you one and ship it to you. I signed up for yelp, just to write this review: Linda is one of the loveliest people I've ever encountered in a small shop. Not only was she incredibly knowledgeable (and honest--in the best possible way), but she was also helpful, patient, and so so nice. I have two weddings to attend in the UK and she helped steer me towards an amazing fascinator that would work with both dresses--maximizing my cost and wear--which was appreciated. And while she was helpful in choosing the right fascinator, she also did a rush job for me--usually assembling pieces takes two weeks and she did it in 2 days. If this review isn't an endorsement for supporting local businesses (and the people who run them), then I don't know what is. I have bought beautiful hats here. But I did just have a very off-putting experience. They can be quite snobby and unhelpful. I went in today to look at a hat, which turned out not to look good on me. The salesperson (who was not the owner) suggested another, which looked worse.
