Wonderful store with a great selection and awesome customer service. Highly recommend!

We love hats, and wear them often. Particularly in summer and winter. We excitedly wandered in here to look, only to be greeted with signs saying, "Do Not Handle the Hats" everywhere. No prices were posted anywhere, either, which I find annoying. So you can't touch the hats on your own, and you don't know what they cost. This is, IMO, a very stupid business model. There were at least two sales associates, and the selection was fun. But not being able to pick up a hat without a hovering sales associate, or have any idea of the price, was a total turn-off. We saw some cute things, but left without handling them, or any idea of prices. read more

First, I am not really a "hat person," or at least I didn't think of myself as one. But after walking by this store a thousand times (and never going in), at some point I finally did...and wow! City Hats has made me a true believer. The hats in this store are pretty expensive -- many are in the $200-$300 dollar range. But these hats are handmade pieces of art. The details are extraordinary. Sometimes I just like to look at my modest collection of hats; even the linings of the hats are beautiful. Many of the reviews here do NOT match my experience at this store at all. Every person I have ever encountered has been friendly and helpful, and NOT AT ALL pushy. In fact, they are very honest, and will gently tell you if something looks bad. But they will also make suggestions -- maybe a hat you'd never considered -- that will absolutely elevate your hat game. They did suggest a hat that I felt ridiculous in at first, but I also thought it was beautiful. I ended up buying it, and what do you know: it's my favorite hat I have ever owned (it's a hand made linen cap, in a ridiculously original but subtle blue print, that has a bespoke fit). Also, they let your try on the hats, and they have most of them in every imaginable size. The space is well organized and inviting. This is best hat store I have ever been to, and while not every thing is to my personal taste, the quality and selection are incomparable. read more

Went in today looking for a specific hat. The sales representative was very pushy and kept pushing different hats on to me. Each time she would say, "Wow, that is your hat", no matter how ridiculous they looked. When I found one that I did like she was very pushy about buying it right now. When I asked about having it shipped she said they charge between $40 and $100 for baseball caps. When I asked about military discounts she was condescending. When I asked if she could package it for travel her answer was "wear it on your head". (I came in with hat already on). They carry the Barsalino line from Italy, which I have been wanting to try on so I put up with the rude and annoying sales rep. That hat cost about the same as they do on the Barsalino website so I would say it was fair priced. read more

I have been in the store many times and I really like their product. However, the sales people are super condescending. They act like they have the best product in the world and you are doing them a favor to purchase it. I simply asked if they were running any sales currently, which is pretty normal question. One of the sales people made a really arrogant joke and put me down. Not to mention that the whole time I was in the store, they bombarded me with hats to try on... and if I didn't I like a certain hat, they would roll their eyes at me as if I had no taste whatsoever. Overall, the hats are overpriced, they have no return policy no exchange no return... and most of all, sales people attitude sucks. read more

Giving 5 stars because of the 5 star service by the lovely girl named Julia. She took her time to answer all my questions and to educate me on all the hats. If I ever felt the need for a more fancy hat. I'd come straight here. They have top hats, bowler hats, cowboy hats and much more. These guys are the hat experts. Had call and was told that the store was closing at 6. Said I was coming and got there by 5:50p, only to be told that I couldn't enter because the store closed early - as all of the salespeople sat around a fully lit empty store. Made no sense as I would think any store these days is looking for sales. Plus - why not let anybody in before closing time and I called to say I was heading over? This place is amazing with wonderful customer service... I was on vacation here on my last night in town, passed by the store in the Uber and looked up the place since I was looking to get into hats. I looked the place up and saw that it closed online in a few mins. I called the place and was made aware that they were opened for another hour for the night. I arrived with a hour to spare. The staff was welcoming and very friendly. All my questions were answered. The hat I came for was made by a local artist that City hats is in partnership with, and they called him who came a picked my hat up in a couple mins. I put another hat together with still great customer service with all my questions. The hat I had made was completed and mailed to my house with no issues. Everything worked so smoothly and I'm very happy with my purchase. Thanks again!! Will always visit this place when in town! read more

We went to City Hats today for my son, who had walked by the shop weeks before and saw they had a big selection of Kangol bucket hats and other styles. We walked in today and was immediately greeted by Katrina who welcomed us into the shop and told us to take our time looking around. My son definitely wanted a bucket hat. Katrina explained sizing and styles and showed my son color, style and size options. She gave input but was never pushy and just let my son try whatever he wanted. We moved on to trucker hats and baseball caps where she enlisted help from a knowledgeable coworker to show us options that were in the stock room. They were all knowledgeable about all the hats and gave us examples on how styles change even how certain companies changed their logos over the years. The whole experience was pleasant and my son felt like he was getting great options. 8 hats came home with us and we will definitely recommend to our friends and will be returning soon! read more

From the minute I entered the store I was constantly being talked to. What was I looking for, what size did I want and then told that they thought this hat would be good for me, that they liked the last one, etc, etc. This was in spite of saying I did not need help at this point. Out of exasperation I asked them directly to stop following me and let me look on my own, the salesperson was outright aggressive. Avoid this store at all costs. I purchased a hat in a rush, encouraged by the sales clerks. When I got home, I saw the hat did not suit me. I did not realize that purchase was non-refundable - something the store should make explicitly clear as it is completely out of keeping with the vast majority of retail stores. When I called, the staff was rigid and rude. To keep a $150 purchase - one that they could have just issued credit for - they've lost a customer. BEWARE. read more

I was on a mission to find a new winter hat, and the staff at City Hats were very friendly and helpful! I was able to consult a lady on hats with which fabric will cause the least pilling and is not itchy but still keeps me warm. She also instructed me on how to take care of the hat as well (how to clean it and remove pilling if there's any). I have been hopping around various clothing stores to check out their tiny hat selections, but here I was able to focus on picking hats because there were only hats and there were so many of them! The price varies so I believe you can pick out a hat that aligns with your budget. I'm excited to come back to the store when I need another hat! read more

I was recently in your shop at 55 East Houston Street, NY. I was impressed with the wide selection of hats but when I was about to pay $100 for a hat I was told the a hat-box would cost me $5. I was amazed that when I told the sales-person that I thought a hat-box, that probably cost the store lest than .50 cents, should be included with a $100 hat, she allowed me to leave the store without purchasing the hat. If it is the store policy to blow a sale because it is too much to throw in a hat-box, then that is a poor business strategy and you may want to reconsider. Maybe I am the only person in New York that will never buy a hat over a $100 that does not come with a hat-box. read more
