I would say to make sure you take your hair into consideration when you buy a hat. You want to make sure your hat will still fit if you change your hairstyle. We bought a hat two days ago, we haven't worn it, the tag is well reserved and we wanted to return the hat. But the keeper told us there is no refunds in this shop, which is ridiculous. It has been a recurring problem since birth that everywhere I go I can hear someone saying, "That guy should be wearing a Kangol." Forget Slick Rick, Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC and LL Cool J, Kangol has always been more about me than the 1980's rap world.* When I first walked by this Kangol store, I did a double take. The two takes were : I have never heard of a Kangol store and how hard will they laugh when I walk in? This was quickly erased as I did not go in after peering through the window awkwardly for more than a moment. After remaining in this neighborhood on a consistent basis for a number of months I finally went inside the store and no one laughed, at least not to my face.** I realized quickly that the selection was extremely solid, but most of these hats were not going to necessarily work on me. However, the world opened up for me in the form of baseball hats, winter hats and scarves. For two entire winters I have abused my Kangol winter hat and scarf and received compliments on them rather than snickers for trying to look like Samuel L. Jackson at every award show.*** The variety in here was truly surprising and I would not be reaching to say that there could be a hat of some sort in here for anyone. I'm an independent store connoisseur and this was actually on my list because Kangol has been one of the leaders in premium hat culture for some time. Well mark this in your shopping books ladies and gents, this store needs help. It's a testament to the fact that not all fashion brands can pull of their own store. And especially when you compare this store with one of the new guard like Goorin Hats it's just embarrassing. (Goorin would be totally pissed if they knew I called them new guard but hey, they weren't putting it down like Kangol was in the 80's period). I went in here on a whim and was pleasantly surprised by the selection and the service. For such a tiny store they had an impressive array of hats. I told the employees what I was looking for and they were very helpful and knowledgable. The made many suggestions and were able to pick up on what I was looking for. I was able to find the perfect hat at a very reasonable price. When I paid for my hat I accidentally left my card on the counter. The employee left a busy store to chase me down and give me back my card. He ran a block and was very courteous. Next time I need a hat I will definitely be coming back to Kangol. read more

These are desperate times and my recent experience with this store proved how scared retail is and how we are all suffering because of it. I was with a friend of mine and her 3 1/2 year old daughter on the UWS this past weekend. This lovely little girl likes hats because she does not like the sun so when walking by she noticed a window of hats and wanted to go in. When we entered the store and I heard the manager on the phone saying over and over "I have a customer I need to go" with a tone that sounded as if the subtext was "finally someone has come in the store!" They had kid size hats, I picked one and handed it to the 3 1/2 year old to see if she liked it - she most certainly did not. It is the joy of childhood that when you think something is ugly you say so. Well she said so and dropped the hat on the ground (because if you hate something and your 3 1/2 there is no reason to hold on to it any longer) with that she even pushed it away with her foot. She was not having a tantrum she was expressing that she didn't want the hat. I picked it up and put it back on the display. A moment later the man took the hat off and pointed out dirt on the hat saying we needed to pay for it. Now, I have no idea if the hat had dirt on it before, and he said his shop is meticulous (I didn't want to point out the obvious fact that if his store was so meticulous his floors would not be so dirty that they could stain a hat with one push from a 3 1/2 year old). My friend being the Mother of a toddler did not want to argue the point and decided to pay for the hat. Right then and there I saw even more evidence of what a wonderful Mother she is and what a louse this guy is. The transaction ended with this guy actually saying "thank you for being honorable" I really wanted to scream. Bottom line is this store is not worth giving your money too there are many other places you can get these hats if you want them so when you are walking by this one - keep walking. read more

I took a detour before work to the Kangol store to get my boyfriend a birthday present. He has a kangol from many years ago that he adores and wears all fall/winter long. He was talking about wanting another in a different color, so away I went to the kangol store. I went in around 11:45 in the morning, so i was the only one in there. I was greeted by one of the two men who were working there and I told him exactly the situation i was in and how much i was willing to spend. He asked me various questions about my boyfriends build, shape of his face, etc and I wound up going with the classic wool kangol in navy (the boyfriends current one isnt the classic shape, its slightly different). They wrapped it up beautifully in a box, gift receipt thrown in, and i was also told to not worry about the 7 day exchange policy, that in case he doesn't like it we can come in whenever. It was just the most pleasant shopping experience I've had in a very long time. The boyfriends birthday is tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to giving him his new kangol. and even if he wants to exchange it for something else, i know the experience will be just as great should we go back. I really recommend it, and i may go back to pick myself up something, as they have a really big selection of hats (for such a tiny store too!), and not all just in the classic shape. read more

I've been coming to this store for years now and have always walked away a satisfied customer. Not by any means a large shop, they still have a great selection including the latest and greatest styles. Customer service has always been above par for me having a knowledgeable and helpful staff always there assisting in selecting the right lid (and in one case a jacket as well so they do offer more than just accessories). Yes, prices may be a bit on the high end, but not when I factor in the fact that I have some styles from Kangol lasting me years now, being worn to this very day. read more

This was my first visit to the Big Apple, and being the hat enthusiast I am, shopping at the one and only Kangol store in North America, was one of my priorities. It did not look like I was going to have the time to visit the store because of my family's busy itinerary, but I called to see how late they were open. The guy who answered the phone was more than accommodating, and he offered to stay late. Gotham is The City that Never Sleeps! He had no idea how badly I wanted to visit the Empire City store. The Kangol Store was everything I wanted and more! The big selection I was counting on (this is New York City after all) was there in all it's glory. The individual who served us truly exceeded my expectations, and my expectations were high. I counted on walking into a quality hat store, a style sanctuary, where my family and I would be be taken care of. I wanted to share my Kangol love with my kids, and introduce them to the brand, where they could see the plethora of options available for them. The guy that served us, immediately made us feel welcome. He was very friendly , accommodating and helpful with the kids. Despite the long day of travel, the kids were all very excited to check out all the different lids. He knew the trade, and he knew it well. I am happy to say that we all came away with sweet lids, in a wide variety of styles and colours (yep - that's the correct Canadian spelling). I was ectastic that I was able to buy a fuzzy pink fugora bucket hat for my three year old daughter. My youngest son showed his suave GQ style, choosing a Escher Check 504 cap. My oldest son went with the symbolic red & white stars on the Hero Earlap Peak pull-on. My lovely wife picked up a Wave Tex floppy acrylic toque, while I was quite happy with my Jacquard Player hat. This was an online/telephone shopping experience with Chuck and Steve at the one and only authorized Kangol store in North America. Yes you can buy Kangol products online and in other stores but this is the only bricks and mortar store dedicated to all things Kangol. I wanted a scarf for my son to go with his two new jackets, something a bit different than a plain ribbed scarf. So I checked the Kangol.com site for one I liked and then called the NYC store. Chuck said he would be happy to send me photos of the scarves that would go with both black and grey. He sent me numerous photos and then we discussed them over the phone so I could make a selection. I decided on an acrylic scarf in black and grey with some small dots known as the Checkers scarf. Chuck told me the price and emailed me a form to fill out and return to complete the transaction as they do not have a website. He even reduced the price of the postage a bit to match the amount of the Kangol.com site. That was super nice! I was very satisfied with the service and the time that Chuck and his partner spent with me just for this small purchase. It appears that these guys are truly happy hatters in a mad hatter world. One day I'm going to see the store for myself as I am somewhat mad about hats. And yes I wear a size large black Kangol Shavora casual with a contrasting button on top. Kangol hats are a great hat brand, I have a couple hats myself. During a recent visit to NYC, I had to check out the store. It is not an impressive space. It's small. But it has alot of great hats for men, women and kids. I didn't buy anything, but now that I'm back home in Miami, I wish I did. I tried on a couple Tropics, made for warm weather, but I didn't pull the trigger and I'll have wear baseball hats in this heat! read more

They have two men who are both lively and energetic in their interaction with their clients, and they were amazingly helpful. I am totally writing this review based on the kindness of the owner. I was visiting Harlem today and in dire need of assistance as I parked my car and tried using my credit card to pay the parking meter to no avail after multiple attempts... the lovely NYC parking meter just wasn't accepting card payments... I needed quarters badly to feed the machine the old fashioned way or else I would no doubt be ticketed .... hmmmm, where could a girl find quarters in this day/age? Not a Deli in sight, but.... right in front of me was a Kangol store! My first thought... oh wow, a Kangol store??? Took me right back to my Brooklyn roots! Anyway, I decided since such a cool and unexpected store was sitting right in my view... let me attempt to find out if 1) they actually had any change (digital world) and 2) if they did, would they have mercy on me! Lo and behold, not only did the owner have just a few quarters, he willingly took mercy and shared with me and further said the most epic thing... 'this is Harlem and we help each other' .... how beautiful was that! People actually caring for each other... what a wonderful feeling! I am a tall and bald man with a shaved head, who stopped in this store yesterday. I like Kangol and have owned several Kangol hats over the years, Unfortunately the store hired 2 young male clowns as salesmen who thought it was funny to take my picture with their phone when they thought I wouldn't notice. ( presumably of my bald head? )The young black salesman and his young white and tragically hipster co-worker giggled like school boys looking at the picture they took of me, this in a store they both work in and represent. Of course all the time thinking I didn't see any of this, and never offering any sales help....Ha ha bald man buyin a hat, ....really?.. Who hired these idiots? And who is the joke on? I live on the upper west side and always pass by the Kangol Store on Columbus Avenue. I finally decided to pop in there the other day. I am so happy I did! The minute I walked in I was greeted by the staff even though they were busy with other customers. The nice thing was that the staff are not on top of you... I was able to browse on my own and check out the hats without feeling intimidated. When it looked like I needed some help, the guys working there knew it and came right over to me and helped me out. I was in there for about 30 minutes and the staff were so amazing! They found me the perfect hat which I absolutely love! Please do not believe the other reviews.... I cannot express how friendly the guys were in there. I would definitely recommend this place! They also play some great tunes in the store...lot of oldies..Not Miss Spears! I came in and saw a beanie that I like and try it on. It fit like a gloves but when I look at the price tag?? It was freaky $47 buck for a Kangol beanie.
