Last year, the 1st time we used Michelle, we gave her an idea we had and she just ran with it - she ended up making a beautiful white cake with strawberry filling that had the 1st 6 music notes to Happy Birthday to You across the top with a little 3-D gum paste figure of Nakia singing into a microphone. I posted pictures of the 1st cake he got from me and my bestie Susan that he was so totally blown away with. (He still has the gum paste likeness in his freezer.) This year I sent her a picture of his new fan-financed CD, Drowning In The Crimson Tide, and had asked her to incorporate the CD cover onto the cake. She kept me abreast of what she was doing and when she delivered the cake at The Saxon Pub, it was nothing short of AMAZING!!! She made a cake with a bottom ring on top of a mirror with a "crimson tide" going around the sides with a top tier that she painted to look like Nakia's CD cover. And to top it all off, the top tier of the cake rotated! she totally outdid herself with this over-the-top cake and Nakia really LOVED it. I told her that she can expect an order for a cake for his birthday every year from now on. I have also received birthday cakes made by Michelle for my last 3 birthdays - the 1st one was of a 2-D white baby tiger, the 2nd one was of Hello Kitty's head and this last one was of a red, white and blue Japanese dragon in honor of my Ameerican and Japanese heritage. Even the eyes were of my eye color (hazel) and the detail was totally outstanding! I have had nothing but wonderful cakes made by Michelle. Like Emily J said, she WILL work with you and it does not matter when the event is, she will accommodate you the best she can. I have 2 more cake orders that she will be filling for me - I can't wait to see what these Lavish Cakes & Catering creations will look like. :-)

It is such a relief to have a bakery we can use for quality, attractive cakes at a very reasonable price. For our wedding, we wanted things very simple and that is again what we wanted for our baby shower. Lavish Cakes honored our wishes without any attempt to talk us into a 6-tier fondant covered monstrosity. Of course if that is what you want, I am sure they could make a gorgeous cake for you! We have found that a lot of bakeries don't want to work with folks who want simple, good cakes but that is not the case with Lavish Cakes & Catering. They are professional and high-quality.

All because UT catering makes a mockery of food. I've had UT catered meals several times. The first time was as a serving wench at the UT Madrigal dinner sometime in late 1999. As a green Foodie, I thought the food was okay. Some of the dinners served to the cast and crew were downright disgusting, but it was a step up from Jester cafeteria. I remember taco dinner meat looking like predigested chili swimming in a vat of oil. Gross. Only poor students would it eat, and I did. The food served at the UT Madrigal dinner wasn't so bad. It was London broil, steamed veggies, bread and butter, and wassail. Not too bad considering again it was free to the cast and crew. Bread and butter rock! Mostly because it's butter. The cast and crew stuck our fingers into the left overs and ate like starving natives of some tropical island. Savages we were. The last meal I had served by UT catering was at the Engineering department's Honors Day event. My friend had no one to take, so he brought me. I went because he said free food. I heart free food. The meal was pasta, bread sticks, and brownies. Not bad. I would actually give this meal 3 stars. The worst meal I had was at the Society for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology (SBN) conference. Please also note that this is the only meal I paid for that was hosted by UT catering. $25. $25 wasted. SBN is a small group of researchers, most from Japan, Mexico, Canada, and Europe. There's maybe 200 of us or less around the world. Seeing that the 2005 conference was in Austin of all places, I hoped that the International researchers would get a healthy dose of American culture and food. I was wrong. I was disappointed. I was really embarrassed by the quality of the food served. The menu consisted of fajitas, beans, rice, and some Texas desserts. The fajita meat tasted like and looked like it came off a cadaver. The tortillas were dry, smelled like lard that had been left out for 3 days in the Texas heat, and fell apart because they were so stale. Bummer. I was embarrassed that this could be called Tex-Mex. The desserts were worse: Jack Daniel's pie and Flan. This flan had the consistency of cottage cheese. It was sloppy. It was goopy. It was sad. A little piece of me died inside. The Jack Daniel's pie was runny. Oh man..... I wanted to cry. Please don't let all these big shot intellectual scientists think that food in Texas sucks. Please let them eat somewhere else and go away thinking that Austin has decent food. The only fun part about that banquet was that the president of SBN got drunk, wore cowboy boots with cowboy hat, and started singing deep in the Heart of Texas in a Belgium accent. Other than that, it sucked. UT catering, biggest assault on your taste buds since Vegemite sandwiches.

As a bride the two most important things I wanted for my wedding and where most of wedding budget was going to was one food and second photography/videography. I chose Redbook based on the reviews and variety of food they provided. I am Vietnamese and my husband is American and we wanted to have food that reflected both of our upbringings. I appreciated that they had option to customize dishes. From the very beginning, I made it extremely clear I was a vegetarian. I made it clear through the booking, the wedding food tasting we paid extra for at $150, and multiple emails and calls. We made sure on our wedding day we had scheduled 30 minutes to eat before doing all wedding stuff (pictures, greeting tables, dances etc). Imagine my absolute HORROR when on my wedding day as the bride the plate was brought to me had meat on it. Ok mistakes happen - I told the server I am a vegetarian. She then proceeded to tell me she was not informed of this and there was NOT a plate for me and it would take 20 minutes to prepare my plate for me. It's one thing if you're the guest - it's another when you're the bride. My wedding planner could see the absolute devastation on my face and proceeded to try to correct this. I ended up having to wait almost full 20 minutes my food and my poor husband tried to give me some carrots off his plate. I ended up rushing to eat my meal and didn't even get to enjoy food we had paid for. Another was that some of the tables did not receive the food that was set on our menu, including some of the wedding party. We had paid more for table service and guests were disappointed they did not receive the food that was on the menu. The other issue was as well in the beginning, both me and my wedding planner had difficulty getting in contact with Adriana. I completely understand missing an email here and there, but we often would have to send 3 emails spaced multiple days apart before we heard in a response. We also would try phone call/texting and it would take some time before we heard a response. She did however improve once we had a conversation about it, which I appreciate. For full transparency we paid $30,964 for catering for 240 person wedding. This included family style service, charcuterie board for grazing for our cocktail hour, Vietnamese tostada for passing around, custom Vietnamese salad and soup for the table, shrimp dish, mushroom fried rice, ribeye, roasted chicken, mushroom "short ribs", roasted baby carrots, and celery root puree. It also included 5 vendor meals, gratuities, and serving platters. So you can imagine why my expectations were higher than received. Overall, I hope that Redbook improved since my wedding. I think overall I was disappointed - I believe I received better service and food at the wedding food tasting rather than my actual wedding. I didn't spare any expense when it came to food (in fact my husband and I had Salt and Straw our favorite ice cream company based in Portland ship their ice cream to us for our wedding) and it was sad that our guests remembered the ice cream more than the actual food. I acknowledge that Red Book was working at a new venue they had never worked at before, but still I would have expected better communication and overall better logistical planning for the price I paid.

Granted, we hired her 3 weeks out, so that only left her with so much time. We found out a few days before the wedding that she wouldn't be able to make it to the rehearsal (which was on a Friday afternoon), so my father had to make sure everything was running smoothly and then we had to explain to her how it would all work minutes before I walked down the aisle. That was so stressful and I really wish she had been there for the rehearsal. Had I known that, we would've hired someone else. When it was time for our first dance, I had to ask her to start the music and we were just standing there awkwardly waiting, when it was on the schedule that I had filled out beforehand. There was also a problem with the venue's sound system, which some of my wedding guests had to try to fix. I know that wasn't her fault, but my wedding guests knew there was a problem before she knew there was a problem, which isn't right. I also had a few bridesmaids point out (after the wedding) that she was sitting looking at her phone for a long portion of the night. I was enjoying my party, so I can't personally attest to that. I only saw that a couple times. I hired someone to help out so my family and I didn't have to worry as much on the day of the wedding. Maybe my expectations of Rachel's services were off, but the service did not seem to be performed to the best of her abilities. I really hesitated and went back and forth about writing this review. I do not like to speak negatively of people, nor do I want to negatively affect her business, however we were just very unhappy with the service and wish things would have been done differently. :(

We had our wedding in Sonoma in late September 2017 and it went off incredibly smoothly in large part to Brittany's hard work, attitude, and friendly / calm demeanor. Without her guidance throughout the planning process we would have been lost. Going into our wedding day, we told Brittany the general theme / setup we had in mind and she was able to turn our thoughts into reality. She managed to keep all of the stress and details of the day away from us so we could focus on getting married and enjoying the big day with our guests. Brittany coordinated with all of our vendors and made sure they were set up properly and on time. We found out after our wedding that there were issues with some of our rentals and she took care of it (we ended up with upgraded chairs!). When the guests arrived, she kept the event flowing and was flexible when things didn't go according to plan. If it wasn't for her we'd still be at cocktail hour! Guests always knew where to go and nothing felt rushed. Several guests commented on how professional Brittany is and how smoothly the event was run.
