Thursday Steak Night Special - cooked to perfect!

What a GREAT find and we'll definitely be back. Food and drinks were all top notch (see photos). Sarah was a phenomenal server as well. Fun ambiance and location is much larger than it looks from the outside. Food and bar specials M-F. Check this place out and ENJOY!

    Wrap and salad was good!

Sunday looks busy, 4 people for lunch. The hostess was a mess had no clue what to do, we were 10 seconds from leaving, finally got sat and honestly it took too long before finally a waiter came and took both drinks and food orders. Waiter was great, food came out pretty quick and it was good, definitely in the higher end of the price scale but it was good.

My favorite local diner that always is fabulous in their customer service and fantastic in their quality of food is 5/5! The inside is also always clean looking and cozy.

I went here because I was interested in a couple of their appetizers. I was soooo disappointed to find out that Sunday they only offer their brunch menu. I wasn't able to order the items I really wanted to try. Nonetheless, I ordered the pastrami sandwich with fries. My boyfriend ordered the flaming hen sandwich with fries. My friend ordered a breakfast sandwich and apple strudel pancake. Firstly, the waitress did not write anything down, which is a red flag if there's any type of modifications. The breakfast sandwich comes with choices of meat, bread, etc. The food took forever to come out. Service was so slow. My boyfriend and I received our meals, and turns out my friend's meal wasn't even entered. I have no idea how this happened. My friend told a different waitress what she ordered and it was promised to be "rushed". After a while, she received a breakfast sandwich with bacon rather than ham, on a regular bun rather than English muffin. Her cheesy hash browns were burnt. She did not send back anything since we had time constraints. She said the sandwich was still very good but the hash browns were not great since they were burnt. My sandwich was good, although very sloppily put together. My boyfriend said his sandwich was fine but there was no flavor or spice to it and was not memorable at all. The fries were crunchy and delicious. Despite the discrepancies, the food tastes very fresh. I would give this place another try but likely on a different day where I could have access to the whole menu. Service was slow and lacking. This needs to improve.

We were passing through and decided to stop here for breakfast. There is quite a bit of space inside but was a little noisey, despite not being overly crowded. Service was okay. The server came over almost right away, however it took a while to get our food and server never checked back to see how everything was. She finally showed up to bring us the check. I ordered the Pastrami hash, it was excellent, with the exception of the hollandaise. It was bland tasting and sadly added nothing to the dish. My husband ordered the Country fried pork tenderloin. He liked the flavor of the sausage gravy but didn't particularly like the flavor of the pork tenderloin. It also came with cheesy hashbrowns however there were very little of these on the plate. The top side, which we presume had the cheese, was burned and not pleasant looking. We probably will not return.

Some people say I'm a harsh critic. That might be true but my goal is help them improve not to drive them out of business. We haven't been to this place since long before covid. They have tripled their floor space by expanding into 2 more storefronts and adding a bar in one of them. They've also added outside seating. What they didn't do is expand the size of the kitchen. They are popular and this has given them the ability to expand and to charge charge more than the competition. The expansion may be forcing them to charge more in order to pay the additional rent. My wife hardly ever complains about anything except me being over critical had some things to say about this place. 1) The service was slow. 2) The coffee was bitter. 3) The English muffin for the eggs benedict was over toasted. She said the rest of the eggs benedict had a great taste and the hash browns were perfect! I had the biscuits and gravy. I am a harsh critic of almost all biscuits and gravy made by Northerners, especially in Minnesota. I've had worse but the biscuits and gravy may be close to as good as a Minnesotan would expect them to be but for me they were a miserable failure. The biscuit was hard. It was probably maid yesterday and left in the oven too long. It didn't rise enough but they would know that. I would suggest they buy some Pillsbury frozen biscuits and use them or at least use them as a model of what a biscuit should be. They could also go to Hardee's and try theirs. The gravy was room temperature and tasteless. You could see sausages bits in it but the sausage flavor was lost. Even by adding salt and pepper I couldn't coax any flavor out of the gravy. My hash browns were darker than my wife's. The menu called them cheesy hash browns. If there was cheese anywhere in them it wasn't obvious. The place was noisy. There is nothing to absorb sound and everything to reflect it, That has to be deliberate but I don't understand why. I told my wife I had to go back in order to review their pastrami sandwich. She made it clear that she was hoping it wouldn't be anytime soon. This is maybe one of the worse reviews I've ever given a place and I halfway feel bad about it but I'm sure my review won't keep anyone away and it won't convince The Hen & The Hog to change a thing.

We were very fortunate the be seated. It was very busy and I think it's always busy which is a good problem to have. We sat in the back bar area and a bartender was talking care of us. At first we ordered just water and tea but later my husband ordered a beer which he never got. We were charged. I had a frittata with spinach and mushrooms it was huge. Two of us could have shared it. The garlic was the best part. The cheesy potatoes were good. Service was decent for how busy it was. The decor was very much like the name and cute. It was very clean.

The food was delicious. You could taste the quality of ingredients and that it was made from scratch. The price's were higher due to the quality and time. Not pictured we had the Minnesota wongtons, if you like pickle roll ups you should try. We all liked the dill mustard sauce too. The french fries were seasoned well, they also tasted good with the dill mustard sauce we had left. The Swedish meatballs had this amazing berry sauce with. It tasted similar to fresh cranberry sauce. It add a wonderful sweetness to the dish. Our server was GiGi, very kind, helpful, and attentive. The ambiance was friendly, country, and fun with the art. Would suggest trying if you are in to high quality food made from scratch!

Although it's a bit of a hike outside the city, still not too bad on a weekday and it was nice to get out and try something new! It seems like an up and coming area for Monticello and development nearby. We came right at 5 when the restaurant opens and got a seat in the high tops. NOTE! If you want to partake in the happy hour, you have to either sit at the bar or in the high top tables. We didn't know this and wanted their chicken wings on the happy hour menu so ended up switching tables. In addition to the wings, my husband ordered the corn bread app which was pretty good too! Wasn't a huge fan of the spicy butter it came with, but strange but the bread itself was good. The wings had a good seasoning and the house made ranch was really tasty! Surprised there were only wings and no drumsticks which I prefer and the wings themselves didn't have a whole ton of meat on them so I'd give it 3/5 on the apps I ordered the 12oz New York strip and at market price it was $62, came with broccolini and French fries. My husband got the turkey burger which he wasn't a huge fan of he said but he enjoyed the fries. My New York strip wasn't seasoned well - if at all to be honest but thankfully they had some leftover A1 from Mother's Day brunch where the bartender made some bloody Mary's so that helped. Can't say the food was a knockout but the service was really good. The bartender who was our server was conversational, great dude, and offered great suggestions. Host and folks were also really accommodating when we hopped around the restaurant so we could participate in the HH. All in all, great experience and nice place to try!

Amelia, our server, was terrific! Accommodating, friendly, and welcoming. Patio was busy but she got to us! Enjoying a 1/2 price bottle of wine and appetizers. Steak bites were perfect, asked for medium rare and they delivered: tender and so good. However, the fake onion rings on the steak bites could seriously get lost, keep the sautéed onions and peppers, bechamel sauce. Also, their fries (the other app) are dangerously good... fresh cut, tender crisp. Consistently good. Served with a spicy mayo, which is so-so. Wine selection was fine... for 1/2 price bottle, can't complain. Pinot Noir, light yet delicious. Not super loud on the patio but is by a highway, yet fairly sheltered from noise. Recommend for a midweek patio date night. They have a decent dining room and bar. Live music events, look 'em up and check 'em out, y'all!

The service and kitchen timing were unbelievably slow. Several tables around us were also clearly frustrated by the delays. I've honestly never waited almost two hours for food, especially for a pretty basic breakfast. When the food finally arrived, it wasn't worth the wait. Everything felt very basic and under seasoned, and half of us didn't even finish our meals. It really seemed like they were completely unprepared for brunch service. They were also already out of caramel rolls, which was disappointing. Overall, a really frustrating experience between the extreme wait time, poor execution, and lackluster food.
