This place has the worst food in Rexburg and that's saying something. The best thing on the menu is the ice water! We wanted to order some smoked meat but they were out... at 6:30pm on a Tuesday night. How is that possible? We ordered medium-rare burgers and got hard, well-done nasty meat. The Mac n cheese was disgusting. The green beans and bacon tasted like vomit. The service is awful and I'll never be coming back. Want my advice? STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOLE. The bacon green beans were absolutely perfect and delicious, with huge hunks of bacon and onion and green beans that tasted fresh. However, I cannot recommend the philly cheesesteak. While the bun and the bell peppers were really good, the steak itself was horrible. The steak itself was cooked well and looked tasty, but was smothered in so much salt that it tasted like beef jerky with too much salt. Were there not so much salt the sandwich probably would have been much better, though I still think it could have used a lot more cheese. $11 dollars for that, I will not be coming here again, except maybe to have their delicious green beans. read more

The Hickory has really gone down hill in the past year. My husband and I went with some friends and it just made me want to avoid the restaurant forever. We ordered the nachos as an appetizer thinking it would be enough to share with a couple friends but the portion size was 1/4 of the size it used to be. Super disappointing. My husband got the bottomless lemonades and when he asked for another one, with his drink almost gone, the waitress said he needed to finish his drink before she can get another one. The Hickory has a cozy and rustic atmosphere. The food is much better than average, as well as their specialty lemonades and mixed sodas. The barbeque is great, but not as good as Blisters, but Blisters is just about the food and The Hickory delivers the whole package - location, atmosphere, service, and really good food). I'd recommend any of their dishes, especially the fries and burgers, which are the best in Rexburg and the whole Upper Valley. I highly recommend them. Our waitress did a good job, and was very sweet. Two of our sides had to be sent back because they had a funky taste. The guy that brought our food out dropped the ketchup and it went all over my daughter, on her face, her neck, her hair, and her clothing! The guy said he was sorry, made a bunch of jokes and then walked away leaving her sitting there with ketchup all over... luckily the waitress came by and helped us clean up the mess. This used to be our all time favorite place to eat for date night. But they keep changing things and they seem to make it worse and worse. Granted, our service has ALWAYS been great. Even if something goes wrong, they've corrected it immediately and apologized. However, the food... when they first opened it was A-MAZING!!! The brisket was juicy and fresh, the hamburgers, the fries, the salads, the sandwiches... did I mention the FRIES?! they were delicious! I loved everything we've ever tried on the menu. YET the last few times we've gone, they've changed things again and again and it doesn't work. Take the cluck-in-tuck for example; it's a big (either strips or grilled) chicken wrap and it used to be juicy and had great flavors, but now they've changed the chicken to shredded and it's dry and the flavor is unpleasant (it's like their shredded BBQ chicken, but the taste is watered down... gross). They used to have large salads and half salads and now they only have the small ones with the large price. :/ The biggest let down is they also changed their fries. Now they taste like solid oil. Yum. Not even a hint potato anymore. Just oil. And about every time we go the prices have crept up. I hope Hickory figures things out and fixes their "fixes" to the menu and their food. read more

I had the Reuben sandwich and it was so good I'm thinking of going back for supper before we leave Rexburg. Have only been to Hickory once so far, but I would certainly go back, and our student daughter had already been a few times and was the one to recommend it. When they finally asked what I needed, I told them, and a waitress says to another waiter, "Oh, it isn't ready yet." They don't say it to me. I loved this place, but after my last time...I won't be back. My first time here was in 2018 and it was great. Service, food, and atmosphere was awesome. But in June of 2020 it had really gone downhill. Let me explain. We went with my family from Arkansas, we know and love our bbq. We thought this place would be great, but our server messed up our drink order right off the bat. Then the food comes, she put in the wrong order for me and completely forgot to put in my brother's order all together. Food is finally all on the table and she admits this is her second, evening job. She works with children during the day and by this point is exhausted. Happens, we get it. I don't tell her she ordered me the wrong thing because she seems to be having a rougher evening. So we eat. Everyone finds their meat is dry. I got a potato with meat. Very very dry and little flavor. My Mac and cheese was just as dry. We ate, but discussed that the place had really changed in quality and service since our other experience a year prior. Especially with the cost of everything being up due to covid....not worth it..We mutually decided it was a bust and to not be returning. Menu's were dripping wet for Covid wipe down. Help did not check for refills. Chicken Parmesan was on 'Macaroni', which was microwaved (w/cool spots). BLT and avocado was thick with meat and granted 3 slices of avocado, but somewhat dry and tasteless, i.e., needed more 'suave/condiment' for my taste. Side order of onion rings fried in corn batter was too gooey and grainy. Longer cooking with a second batch made no difference. Corn bread batter is too thick. Customer relations training with hostess, servers, and cook training prior to customer participation, with 'part time college kids' is a must, which would then match the atmosphere of the premise. Nice restaurant, and service is quick. Flavor of the food isn't that great. Got the house platter and my wife got the fish and chips. The fish is similar to what you would get in a filet o fish sand which at McDonald's. The meat on my house platter was salted and seasoned way too much and was borderline inedible( I got the ribs and Brisket). The fries looked and tasted old. We ended up not eating most of our food. The first time I went in I thought it was the best restaurant in Rexburg, so for my husband's birthday we went here for dinner and I swear I have never had worse service. I don't even like writing reviews on places because it's too much of a hassle but this was awful... The food was pretty good, but our waiter brought out our drinks and after that, we never got refills ($3 lemonade that had unlimited refills BTW) even after asking repeatedly for the refills. He brought out our meal and then we never saw him again... After sitting for 30 minutes waiting for the check after eating, I went to the front and asked random dude upfront if I could just pay there. He said that he needed the check from the waiter, so I had to go find the waiter and ask for our check... Lets first off start by saying that we have been to Hickory at least 10 times, over the period of time it has been open. I at first really liked the place, I ordered a 2 pound burger once, and the 1/2 pound burger with the toasted cheeses as buns. Most times I've liked it. Fast forward a year and I'm married now. My taste hasn't gotten any more refined, I can appreciate food for what it is. I have been in some rather high end restaurants in my young life having been from San Francisco. The last three times we've gone the food has been sub par and horrible. I do make my own barbecue and I know some general rules for barbecue restaurants. First off, any barbecue restaurant that isn't consistent in serving fresh meats that were smoked that day will never be good. The brisket we got seemed to have a smoke ring. It was bone dry. I mean DRY. I'm the kind of guy that can get over dry but wow this was dry. This leads me to believe it's reheated from a previous day. It takes the extra mile to smoke meat the day of, or rather I say the day before for brisket and serve it fresh. When it's reheated and over cooked, it can't retain the natural moist texture. Horrible. My burger had patches of literally raw meat. What makes no sense is if it's raw in an even pattern in the middle, that just makes me think it was undercooked, but there was random patches of pink, uncooked, meat close to the edge of the patty and in different spots on the burger. This makes me think the patty is frozen and wasn't even fully defrosted! There is nothing fresh about this place. Guess what? The mashed potatoes are powder. We live in potato heaven, where this restaurant could have fresh potatoes funneled into into it's back door and it serves powder. Utter disgrace. Last time we went, they forgot items in our order, upon going home, walking in the door we noticed items were missing. When we called and came back, we received no compensation and no apology, only to grab our now literally cold items they had forgotten. It's a matter of what kind of service and food you've experienced. If you're from Rexburg I'm sure this is good to you. But for all the places I have to compare too this place is sub par on every level. read more

Every time I come here it just gets worse and worse. The first time I came here, I was visiting with my dad to check out the university and apartment complexes in town, and for whatever reason I remember it being delicious. At least, I thought so, but my dad claimed otherwise. After subsequent visits as a proper Rexburg resident, I have to say that my dad was right and I should've listened to him. Don't you hate when that happens? First off, it's far too expensive. Especially when you have a place like Blisters just down the way selling superior food for less money, it's hard to justify coming here. The ambiance is kind of cool, I guess - it has that old-town, down-home, drinking-out-of-a-Mason-jar thing going on - but definitely not worth paying that much money for. The food isn't worth the money you pay, either. The ribs are charred and blackened almost all the way to the bone. The fries are undercooked and disturbingly slimy. The mashed potatoes look like they came from powder out of a box (we live in IDAHO, people, certainly you can do better than this where potatoes are concerned). The macaroni and cheese tastes like it came out of a blue box with an orange dinosaur on it. All in all, I could make better food at home than what I pay top-dollar for here, and I am a borderline-lethal chef. Save your money and skip this place. read more

This place has generated a lot of local buzz and always seems busy. I'm glad I finally got around to finally checking it out. The restaurant has a nice theme and ambiance. The entrees come in little wooden crates. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich for $5.99. It literally came with a whole crate of fries. The BBQ pork was tangy and rich, very much in the Kansas City BBQ tradition. It was supposed to come with cole slaw on top, but for some reason mine didn't. I tried the deep fried Mac & Cheese and it was fantastic, almost too good to be called an appetizer. There will be inevitable comparisons between The Hickory and Blisters in Rexburg. The Hickory definitely has better ambiance and is a better setting for a date or business meeting. However, Blisters' sandwiches are bigger and less expensive. It really comes down to a matter of taste on the BBQ: The Hickory's tomato/molasses based KC style versus Blister's vinegar based Carolina style. Either way, you can't go wrong--both places are great additions to Rexburg. FYI: It's probably just a personal pet peeve, but they serve their drinks in Mason jars. I know some people find this quaint, but it reminds me of my single days when I was too lazy to wash my cups and dishes and had to resort to drinking from empty jam jars. read more

I went here with my wife on a Friday and didnt want to wait 40 minutes to be seated. We came back the next night just before the rush and she ordered an appetizer, briscutte with potato bombs and greens beans. I got the pulled pork with potato salad and fries. After a short wait they brought out our dinner plates. I reminded him that we ordered an appetizer which we didnt receive. He apologized and said he would go get it. In the mean time we ate what we had in front of us. The food didnt seem very fresh. Must have been mass cooked and kept warmish until ordered. My potato salad was inedible. The potatoes were very dry and had brown rotten spots just under the skin. I didnt bother complaining since I was filled with everything else I ate. He came back 15 minutes later without the appetizer, to fill my drink. I mentioned it and told him we didn't want the appetizer anymore. The portions we received were huge. A lady came out and gave us a card for a free appetizer the next time we came in. That made everything better there. So we did come back in during lunch time the next week. We wanted to give it another chance. And what other options did we have in town?? The place was half full and some party was going on. We were taken to the back little room. There we waited for 10-15 minutes before we had anyone check in on us. I had to ask the man who sat us(our server from our previous visit) if we could order. He ended up taking our order. We ordered that appetizer wings and rings. It was good. I'd say we waited an average amount of time to get our food. The waitress that was in our little room helping everyone else completely ignored us. I didnt have anywhere to go and I had my food so I didn't mind. It wasn't the best food being it was so greasy I used all of the napkins to clean myself. I felt so lethargic afterwards. Since we were forgotten, I flagged down the nearest employee and said we were ready to go. I have never not given a tip. Since I felt as if we did t have a waitress, I didnt give one. Worst meal we have had at a restraurant, I would give a 0 but didn't let me. Had the tba turkey was very dry and avocado was as hard as an apple. Ordered two Northern exposures, french fries were undercooked and hard didn't even have bacon on it as menu stated it would. Fried pickles were not cooked enough. Honey Badger was very dry and extremely salty. Told waitress about it she asked manager and gave 10% off the tba (normally they comp the meal). Could have been much much better for $71. We had a really good experience here ! Great atmosphere , great food , great service ! We got the brisket sandwich with fries , the New York strip steak with Mac n cheese and sweet potato fries . We also had lemonade and diet Dr Pepper . Yum ! All of the food was great ! We would both agreed the brisket was A++! And the fries were perfect . The drinks come in a fun mug , and I loved the taste of the soda . I will say - we were pretty excited about the shakes ... but next time we would pass on those. Food wise: Onion Ring appetizer: bland by themselves, but they showed off the house sauces. $5.99 Brisky Business: PHENOMENAL. It was a perfect combination of brisket and burger meat on one single sandwich. $11.99 Half Rack Ribs: tender to a fault, though I found the sauce on them bland. Everybody has some bias or frame of reference, so let me explain ours. We are a North Carolina couple who love Carolina style pulled pork. We won't comment about sauces, because that's like talking about politics or religion where we come from. Everybody has their preferences and won't budge despite the evidence. Wait, I digress. My wife loves pulled pork, but is not a huge steak fan. I personally love a great prime rib. My job requires me to travel all over the U.S., so I have eaten prime rib from coast to coast and north to south. With our love of pulled pork, I have built several pit smokers and we routinely smoke pulled pork, brisket, and chicken, but I have never tried smoking prime rib. Now for the review of The Hickory in Rexburg, Idaho. Tonight we stayed in Rexburg after a 13-hour drive. Starving, we checked into our hotel and got online to find dinner that we could bring back to our hotel. As soon as we found the Hickory, we knew where we were headed. I phoned in and placed the order. The staff was super friendly. The only negative was the background noise and her COVID mask made it hard for my hearing aids to understand everything she said. She was very patient and our order was perfectly correct. When we arrived at the Hickory to pick up our food, I was surprised. Many BBQ joints are small and not fancy. Not the Hickory. The place was well lit, clean, larger than expected and my stomach growled with anticipation as soon as I smelled the air coming from within. The ambiance seemed very nice for a family night out or a couples date. The food was ready and again the staff was awesome. I had mentioned on the phone that we were in a hotel and would need utensils. They told me to simply ask when I picked up the food. Well I had forgotten by the time I got over there. Just before I walked out, a hostess ran up and asked if I was the one who was staying in a hotel. I said yes and she immediately handed me the utensils I had forgotten to ask for. Back at the hotel our stomachs were doing backflips of anticipation as we made our way to the room. The food was AWESOME! My wife says my pulled pork is the best in the world, but she is expected to say such things. After mine though, she says the Hickory is a great runner up. The pork was full of flavor and moist. Score one for the Hickory. As for my Prime Rib, I took one bite, which my plastic fork had no problem tearing away, dipped it in their Au Jus and as soon as the tasty morsel hit my tongue, I fell to my knees and started chanting, "I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy...". Seriously it was the best prime rib I have eaten anywhere in the U.S. The horseradish sauce left something to be desired, as it was not as strong as I typically like, but the Au Jus was something to behold. It was not the normal brown meat dripping style. It certainly had the meat dripping, but it clung to the meat like no other Au Jus and had a hint of mustard taste. It complemented the meat so synergistically that I would love the recipe. If you're ever in Rexburg Idaho, you should eat at the Hickory! read more

Horrible service, the waitresses there are always in a bad mood and treat you like crap. I used to always order the cranberry salad and I would always have a problem with it, uncooked chicken, sometimes they would put no pecans, sometimes they wouldn't give me the dressing I ordered, and they will never put it in a bag with napkins and a fork like it should be (I would always get it to go), never going back, its really sad cause it's the only place in Rexburg where they have the cranberry salad. read more
