This place is really cute and convenient to get to! We walked from our place to get lunch. The inside had a little diner feel. There wasn't anything spectacular about it though. The service was great. We got there a little before they were starting their lunch menu and they allowed us to order lunch anyway. So, it was nice that they were accommodating. They do not offer a meat, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich option on there online menu. Why I have no idea. If you order a sandwich online and request bacon egg, and cheese, you have to pay out-of-pocket when you pick up the sandwich they're not able to charge you the full amount online. Again, I have no idea why this is it defeats the purpose of the convenience of online ordering when I asked them why they didn't have an option for meat, egg and cheese. They said all we have people that order that and they just call in and request the meat that defeats the purpose of online ordering. I really want to go here more often since it's right around the corner. The place is really awesome in the spring/summer to sit outside and in the winter nice and convenient if snowed in or it's really cold. The staff are friendly and the food is fresh, which I absolutely appreciate. However, there are a couple of adjustments which would make me a regular in a heartbeat: 1. Upgrade the coffee/espresso to be stronger and more robust and 2. Have pricing congruent to the menu item. I concur with the previous reviewers description of the current coffee/espresso drinks and that even in NYC breakfast sandwiches from neighborhood shops are less than 5 bucks. I really want to support this place more because I do think they put out great food and the staff are so friendly but for now, it has to be an occasional indulgence rather than going on the regular. ‍ read more

Not sure why I haven't been here but glad I stopped in today. I had been greeted with a friendly smile and great smell of breakfast food being made, but sadly I just needed a caffeine pick me up and also something to keep me warm on this windy day. I got the spiced chai latte with caramel syrup and oat milk and honestly Starbucks you can eat your heart out ! This place knows how to make a good cup of chai. Perfect temp without even having to tell them, fragrant, tasty and just wonderful with each sip I took. I love love love pastries and they had some good looking options. The menu has just the right amount for breakfast, lunch or a nice pick me up. Will probably come back everyday if my wallet permits definitely gotta check this place out! read more

I LOVE this neighborhood gem. Since I've lived on the Hill, this place has gone through at least three owners and names, and the current iteration proves that third time really is the charm! The coffee is always great, the service always friendly and fast, and the food is solid. The breakfast fare is great--crispy bacon, flavorful potatoes, and eggs aren't over cooked. The French toast is also a hit in my house! My only complaint is that they close on the earlier side and that I wish they converted into a wine bar at night! A girl can dream. read more

It's a '5' for what it is, a little, neighborhood shop for coffee and light breakfast/ lunch. Enough reviews here so won't bother you much more: great, helpful staff, good coffee ( and it's easy to get a plain, not fufu coffee...but they have that too. My Ham, Egg and Cheese on Croissant was incredible, appearing to have about three eggs. Sat outside at the counter and read a book thinking it's grand to be in a city where you can walk places. Photo of the exterior, much like many others, was added simply because I took it and because the GOOGLE MAPS cam van went by twice and I May be in the street level scan. My visit to this cafe was a pretty disappointing experience. The service was mediocre, as the women taking my order were borderline rude. The food was not good and lacked flavor. A little salt & pepper goes a long way. I'm glad they gave me the salsa on the side because it wasn't an ounce of flavor. The matcha latte also lacked flavor. The Hill Cafe is the third coffee shop to occupy the space on the corner of 15th & A Streets NE. First there was Mia's bringing espresso and Mexican breakfast to Hill East. Loaf Coffee came next selling bad coffee and misogyny (Google "Loaf Coffee DC controversy" and read the Popville article for context). Now Hill Cafe has moved in with a large breakfast menu and decent coffee (they brew Lacas Coffee roasted in New Jersey). The cafe makes good use of their space. There are a few tables outside when the weather is warmer. Inside, there are a few tables and chairs throughout the space, including three sofa chairs in lightly elevated area in the back. The service is friendly. When I went on a Saturday morning, two kind women greeted me when I entered and made me a large latte for me and sold us a banana for my 2-year-old daughter. The latte was not bad and full of foam. The inside itself isn't anything to write home about, but it is one of the only coffee shops in Hill East this far up. Hopefully, they crack the code of engaging with the community and become a true neighborhood spot. read more

Weird experience with pickup but the food was decent. I had paid for a cheese Danish but it wasn't included in my to go bag (good thing I checked) so I asked and they said said they were out. No worries... but there was no offer to replace or refund or anything. So I had to ask to take a different Danish vs them proactively offering. Also I paid extra for a large coffee but it was the same size as the small. Apparently they don't have large... then why allow people to pay extra for it online? They also offer pupusas which are delicious, and my go-to order. They have standard baked goods like muffins and donuts. The prices are a tad high, a turkey sandwich will cost you about $9. Generous portion of chicken salad, on a big bowl of lettuce and spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, cucumbers, green peppers and a hard boiled egg. Yum! 2. Glad to see good health practices in place -- carry out only, plexiglass barrier, staff is masked and there's plenty of hand sanitizer. Folks are good about distancing too. I'm not a coffee fanatic but the regular small latte I ordered does not taste good. The coffee tastes almost watered down and has a plain flavor to it. I also ordered a bagel which the cashier didn't catch. To add, there was a soft drink fee included in the bill which I don't understand why? I ordered a coffee, not a soda? I know it's hard to find a latte that's under $5 these days which is why I'll consider it a Friday treat, but it's at least justifiable when it's enjoyable. Ordered the pancakes and eggs with Turkey bacon. The pancakes were so dense and thick they had the consistency of a Magic Eraser, it was so strange. Not light and fluffy. This is the successor of Mia's. New name and possibly ownership, but else everything the same. Nice albeit inefficiently used space. As before, given the setup, the space has a strong smell of fried oil that will no doubt cling to my clothes, because there is no separate room where the omelettes etc. are made. As with Mia's still sponsored by Boar's Head, which gives an impression of the café not being an independent outfit but an appendage of a corporation. The workers seem rather aloof and alienated from their work and most certainly from the customers. It was also fairly cold on this winter day, but for this I can have sympathy given utility prices these days. In short, I don't feel super-incentivised to return. The hot chocolate is meh, but not the worst out there in the DC area. It was at best lukewarm if not tepid, so I had to ask the staff to put it in the microwave. I have no clue how this is so highly rated. At best it is the most basic of food at worst it's just disappointing. I moved to the hill from elsewhere in the city a couple of years ago and was so excited to have a breakfast/lunch joint nearby but I've never had a more disappointing meal in DC. TBH none of the cafes on cap hill are particularly overwhelming so the competition is minimal. It's fine as a neighborhood place I mean they put American cheese singles in a breakfast burrito...
