A large group of us came here this past Saturday night around 11:30pm. We came hungry and ready to play some arcade games. A couple of our friends kept raving about the food here (especially the tater tots) so I was looking forward to trying some stuff. Unfortunately, we were told that they already had done last call so we missed it. The crazy part was we watched someone order food right before us and we were standing right behind her. Then when it was our turn, we were denied. Some of us left and others stayed. Very disappointing after paying for an uber to drive us 20 minutes for nothing. These guys (the ownership) do bars right and The Hills is no exception. From the staff to the food, everything is always top-notch and you always know what you're going to get here - consistency is everything. Beyond the good food and service (you have to order the sliders) the overall atmosphere is simply fun. It's lively, the noise level is just right, there is plenty of space inside and out, and if you're channeling your inner child, go play a few video games in their barcade. Good food at this pub in La Mesa. It's bigger than it looks. Has inside and outside tables in front and in the back. You can order using the QR code at the table or from the bar. We had the Brussels, beets, blue cheese salad and added grilled chicken. It was delicious. Also chipotle chicken fries which was a big bowl of fries chicken and sauce. I've been visiting this spot off and on for years and years... but I always keep coming back. In the beginning, they were a local pub where the staff would make an effort to remember your name... and they kept that going for years despite how difficult it is to keep that up for the long haul. There's always been great happy hour deals, solid food, and a decent beer list. My husband and I frequently end up here because he's usually home from work at 9:30 and not only is the Hills one of the few establishments open late (kitchen closes at midnight every day), but it's also one of the tastiest, best bang-for-your-buck burger in the area. While the Hills has always had a local hang out-type of vibe with just a smidge of divey-ness, the vibe has changed significantly with the addition of the game room. On Friday and Saturday nights, the place is usually packed with a younger, boisterous East County crowd and the whole place takes on the feel of a night club crossed with a Dave and Buster's. It can be a bit challenging to find a place to sit, but the food and service have remained solid. My go-to is always a burger and a beer. You can't go wrong with any of the burgers on the menu. Their classic offering starts at $12.95 and the more dressed-up options are priced up to $15.95; not much more than a fast food burger and so much tastier. The burger is so delicious that I usually only remember to take a photo after I've already scarfed the whole thing down! My last burger there was the Big Bang (American cheese, jalapeños, jalapeño cream cheese, crispy wontons, and sriracha marmalade), which absolutely satisfied my recent cravings for cream cheese wontons with sweet and sour sauce. I haven't had much of the current menu besides the burgers, but every food item I've ever eaten here has been great. The only reason why I'm giving it four stars instead of five is because of little gaps in either service or drink quality. While the service is always friendly, there have been times where my food was either delayed significantly or delivered to the wrong table entirely. While management did handle those situations well, it's happened enough to me that I keep it in mind before heading out. During my last visit, the beer I ordered tasted like the line was dirty, but it was so crowded, so loud, and the staff was so frazzled that I didn't feel as though I could have asked to have it exchanged for something else. I am probably better off going during the week when it isn't as busy. Overall, though, this place is a solid neighborhood spot to grab a drink and a bite, especially when you're working on a slightly later schedule than the rest of the world. read more

The food was good, worth eating here. The service lags, they use a QR code to order and pay your bill when finished ordering. They also want you to tip at that time. Don't waste your time tipping, the service was non existent, they brought out your food and that was it, they got your tip, so they had no reason to check on you again. We ate with empty water glasses and empty soda glasses, they never came back. DO TIP HERE until you're done eating, maybe you'll get better service, if they feel they have to do more than bring you your food. read more

Overall it was a good spot. It's self seating and ordering. I got the breakfast burrito which was delicious and reasonably priced. The food came out at a good time. It was nice of them to bring my friend a shot for their birthday. I would recommend that there be a more obvious sign that you need to seat yourself. It was my first time and I was standing at the front while several workers walked past me. The arcade area is cool but there were a lot of kids everywhere. Outside had heaters. I really like this place the food is good they allow pets always a good vibe. The one negative is they allow kids and sadly parents think it's okay to let them scream and run around. The staff members are consistently rude, dismissive, and seem annoyed whenever customers ask questions or request assistance. Bartenders ignore people waiting for periods, and the overall atmosphere feels unwelcoming and managed. I expected better service and professionalism, especially for the prices charged. A sparkly gem within The Jewel of the Hills. It's been fun checking out developments and new features from this neat, family friendly, neighborhood bar & grille. The snacks are tasty. All of 'em. We're always in for at least an order or two of their Kung Pao Cauliflower and/or Brussels Sprouts appetizers when available. Burgers and sliders are great too. Back in the day, the kiddos really enjoyed stopping by on a Saturday morning in pajamas at the build-your-own waffle bar. Service meets expectations even when they get very busy. Drink orders are prompt and food usually arrives together. Our friendly servers check up on refills and to make sure we have what we need. A recently added game room looked great. This place is legit. I was a little worried because I called and they said dogs were fine but when I showed up they said only fine on the patio or arcade which was annoying because I might have went to a different spot since the back patio was closed for the night and the front patio was small and full. But I decided to wait five minutes for a table outside. On the night I came, a Saturday night around 11pm, there was a fight about to break out. The guy who was intoxicated eventually left and got in his car but the police came and arrested him. This doesn't look like the type of place to get drunk at. It's chill vibes. Music is blasting but there's not a dance floor. It's more of a late food and a beer / cocktail or two. Sitting outside I got to talk to the bouncer, Jose, all night and with the server whose name I forgot but was a female and had cool glasses, who was in and out. They were super chill and fun. I really enjoyed them and they gave the already 4 star experience, a 5 star. The menu is mostly burgers and tacos / burritos. I had the pepper jack mac which had Mac and cheese on it and was recommended by Jose and my homie had the breakfast burrito with avocado instead of guacamole at the recommendation of the waitress who said that the texture pulls it together more. She was right. Both meals were pretty fire. Coming from a Black household, I was not confident that the Mac and cheese would be good. It still lacked seasoning but together with the burger, cheese, and bacon, it came together nicely. Fries came with mine and it was maybe slightly salty but because it wasn't a ton of fries, it was perfect. Went inside for the drinks and like I said the music was bumping with a mix of 50 cent, Ye, Bruno Mars etc. it had low lighting that was tinted purple and blue for a nice effect. There were high top tables and booths. About 50ish people could sit inside I imagine. Bathroom were gender neutral and there were two of them inside. Only had a brown nut beer and tequila soda. Nothing but love for the Hills Pub! Met up with friends on a Saturday afternoon and the atmosphere was lively but comfortable. They have QR codes where you can order and pay from your phone which makes coming as a group so much easier. Food was great and the prices were reasonable! I got the bahn mi nachos and they were perfection. The meat was so tender on top of wonton style chips. It was a huge portion but it was so good I ate it all. My girl and I were looking for a spot we could take our dog after a hike! As soon as we walk in, the workers were very nice and welcoming! The restaurant looked very clean from entrance to the back, and the bathrooms as well! We sat in the back where we were allowed to have our dog! You would have troubling guessing, given how quiet La Mesa Boulevard is on a Saturday, that inside this one nondescript door awaited a lively, noisy, busy, and incredibly fun pub, The Hills Pub. I was there a couple of Saturdays ago because I heard their pub food was, God forgive me, 'elevated,' but elevated it was, enhanced by Jade, one of the best bartenders I've ever been served by. There were probably about a dozen of us at the bar, each with our own dietary and time-management needs, and Jade danced circles around her patrons. The energy was infectious. And when bartenders take the time to know your name, it's endearing. And fun. And Jade is both. Despite her burger suggestions, I stuck with my first choice, the El Diablo Burger (but I still love hearing what the staff eat). I literally felt my serotonin getting erect when I took my first bite. The moist 6-8oz patty was slathered in a kind of Serrano Jam Puree that satisfied every primal urge I could bring and it was a wonderful thing. (Though I'm still curious how a fresh, medium-well burger can be served in, I'm guessing, less than three minutes.) The place was packed. And I liked that there were all kinds of age ranges. There was a sense of community more than anything and it should come as no surprise that this bar stands over the last couple of decades (give or take) where others fail. This is, for sure, a keeper. Great job, guys! (P.S. The one criticism I do have, just because it's so weird and icky that it bares mentioning, is the hat the bar back was wearing; it had a rifle emblem with the words 'pedophile shooter.' Um. Awkward. From the food to the service to the arcade games, my husband and I are already planning a 2nd visit. When we first got there, we killed time in the arcade while we waited for our table, and it was nice. After food, we went to play more, and it was trashed. Popcorn on the floor, empty drinks, trash, and half eaten food on the tables, too. We didn't stay long the 2nd time. Extra: * QR codes on the table make for easy ordering. First time here. Came off of a friend's recommendation and was glad I did. We sat outside with zero wait and was served quickly. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. My friend said I had to try their burgers, so I went with their "Texas" burger and it was great. I'm a sucker for almost anything with BBQ sauce. I eat gluten-free so I had to remove the onion rings, but I was very excited that they offered a gluten-free bun that actually tasted good. So many gluten-free options are usually taste free, lol, but this bun held up, which is something I don't always find. I went with the sweet potato fries and they made for a great alternative to regular fries. I did not go inside, but it looked really chill and had a really good "locals" vibe to it. I'll definitely come back when in the area. The only negative (but not big enough from keeping me from going back) is the parking. You know, we've come here for a number of years and the food and service has been good. However last night we were let down by the rude bar tending staff. I just needed refills on my kids' two drinks. There was a long line of people waiting to order food. I walked up to the bar tender and asked if we could get a couple refills. This should take all of 60 seconds for him to pull the dispenser and push a soda button, right? He asked where we were sitting, and I pointed to the patio where we had a large gathering of firends for "going away" party. He declined, saying we have to wait in line or try the bar in the arcade. I was also told that the staff dropping food off in the patio do not provide refills. This was not the case when I had lunch here just a few weeks ago, staff brought refills to us while we were seated on the patio. All this, after we had ordered our food at the counter and they ask you to pay a tip at the time of your order. I tipped 20%. Never again, here. Why should I tip when I wait in a line to order my food and wait in line again for refills? What a joke. You give no service, you get no tip. If anyone should get a tip, maybe the chef who is actually doing the work, not a crabby bar tender (aka food order taker). read more
