I guess I'll be prepared when I move to "the most dangerous city in America", St. Louis. But I digress... Jelenek's is a very cool place and has been around at least as long as I've been alive. My mom used to take us here to stock up on our annuals, vegetables and seeds for the garden. Once I was a little older and wiser, I figured out how to buy flower flats myself and gave Mom a Mother's Day treat of planting the front yard for her. Not quite a surprise the next 15 years that I did it, but every year she was thrilled with the flowers and how nicely they held up all summer. Jelenek's is family-owned if my memory serves me and I love the long-haired Crystal Gayle-esque woman who works there. She's a sweetheart in her big-brimmed gardening hat, full of knowledge and happy to help. They've got a nice selection of seeds, plenty of soil, mulch and tools and I'm pretty sure they have perennials as well. I always enjoy pushing my unwieldy cart through the gravel paths and admiring all the colorful annuals. The greenhouse vegetables at Jelenek's have never failed me and always yield hefty harvests (at least in my experience). The only trouble I've ever encountered was the time I thought I bought sweet banana peppers, but they turned out spicy as hell. When that's your biggest beef with a down-home, country gardening store, you're in good hands.

But I did make it out to Country Club Hills and while taking my time returning to Chicago, I stopped by Roots and Fire Water in Homewood after seeing that they sold tea. It is a boutique shop that feels more like a self care space that has a few tea options. I have a love for rooibos, green, jasmine, and white tea because I mix them with natural juices (e.g., orange, cranberry, apple, melons, celery, cucumber, and the like) that I make at home. Mixing loose leaf tea with natural juices is a really good way to get natural sweetening and light teas like white tea don't compete with the flavor of the juices. Nevertheless, there were no base teas. I bought a jasmine peach herbal tea packet and a passion fruit green tea packet with the understanding that I wouldn't add anything to them. They have already been infused with flavor. I checked the catalog of teas online and see that the selection is limited. When I want some green or herbal teas that have been accented already, I may order from them online.

They offer a wide range of florals, and everything you need to beautify your garden, patio, deck or any other area. One of the things that I like is that the staff is professional, accommodating and knowledgeable. It is relaxing just to walk around, and to plan your next project. Kathy took great care of me, and she went beyond the call of duty to make sure she found me a particular color that I was looking for. I love the pride that she takes and the love and attention that she gives to the plants there. I went on a hot day and I really appreciated that I was able to purchase a nice cold bottle of water. I highly recommend them the quality that they offer is amazing. If you are looking for shrubs, they have you covered, looking for unique ground coverings, they can accommodate you in that area as well. You need unique flower pots, they can accommodate that as well! Carol quickly processed my order and she packed everything with love and care.
