Truly embarrassing visit. Context: we love great beer and travel for it. Have never been to a place this bad. The worst bartender I've ever had. I am 60 years old. Hated us from moment one-not sure why. Drive 2+ hours to get here-beer seemed great. Would rather poke my eyes out than ever return. Woman was despicable. Hated her job. Hated the world. Is this why I spend $14 for a beer? To feel her vibe?! No thanks. Her mixed drink tasted like water and I don't usually care. Came for my birthday. Worst place I can imagine. Horrible. Dennis will not only give you a history lesson about every beer on tap, their brewers and exciting new things coming out, but he'll also help guide you to beers you didn't even know you'd love. I used to drink mainly hazy IPAs (still enjoy them), but Dennis open up my beer world to tons of new breweries and styles. It's hard to pick up beer any other place now because I've become spoiled by having what feels like my own personalize som for beer when I stop in. One of my favorite places to drink beer in NYC, and a great place to have a conversation with a friend or loved one. The bartenders are knowledgeable, kind, observant, and tactful, in a way they posses the qualities you wish all of your friends had. The space is bare bones but tasteful, and they have a small but nice backyard. Can be a bit dark indoors, but that's not something I knock in a beer bar. The selection is fantastic. The number of taps is larger than most, but more importantly, each of the beers they pour is well- made and unique. They also have a very large variety of spirits. read more

Stumbled upon this place for after dinner drinks last night. I ordered a beer and after getting through 1/5 of it, i noticed a fruit fly flew into my drink. I let the bartender know and he goes to grab a stirring spoon to fish it out. I was a little confused by this, so i told him "i was hoping to get a replacement beer, since there was a fly in it". He responds "i dont think my manager would be okay if i gave someone a new beer over a fruit fly". My partner and i stared at him for a few uncomfortable seconds, which made him reconsider and offer a new beer. i should mention, he replaced it with the EXACT amount that was previously in it (about 4/5 full). maybe the bartender grew up without understanding social norms, or maybe the owner is terrible and cheap, but if i pay $9 for a 12oz beer in a slightly upscale bar, id expect better customer service and less flies. read more

Do you ever feel out of place? Like somehow you don't belong? No, you don't know what it's like to be me...at Hops Hill. We came in for a beer dining nearby, and although the beer (and cider) selection is stellar, and although there was an adorable dog sitting on a stool, we all felt a little unwelcome. For some reason, the bar was more brightly lit than...I can't think of something that's always brightly lit, but it was brightly lit, just take my word for it.* There were multiple people at the bar on laptops and another dude reading a book, and it felt as though we were intruding on their personal time. Sure, it was a weekday evening, but it was also after 8 pm and this isn't a coffee shop, it's a bar. It wouldn't have been as much of an issue, but the place is tiny, and there was nowhere for us to awkwardly stand except directly behind the dude on his laptop, while the bartender mostly ignored us (a solid 45% of his clientele). On the bright side, they do have excellent beers and Fernet Francisco, of which I gladly partook. My friends also ordered some kind of sexist cider that declared it was only for men...which I didn't have, out of solidarity for my ladies out there and because I'm not a real man. Hops Hill is pretty new, but is already a prototype on the right way to run a beer bar. Their tap list is full of interesting stuff, including a lot of options from local breweries (Other Half, Finback, etc.). Didn't find what you like there? They have a lot of interesting bottles as well, including some rarer stuff (BCS, Crooked Stave). They're also the only bar in NY that I've seen offering Westvleteren for sale which is above and beyond. The bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly. The lighting is on the darker side but not too dark that you can't read the menu. The place has a roof and some chairs. That's really all a good beer bar needs, and yet plenty of places manage to fuck it up. I came here with a friend while we were waiting for our reservation at Emily down the block. The bartender allowed us to try a few things, and I grabbed a porter from Other Half (I believe) while my friend got a APA from Barrier. After dinner, we decided to come back and split a bottle of Hottenroth. I then proceeded to be a dick and order Finback's BQE (big ass bourbon barrel aged stout). But we had a great time and it was a reasonable bill both times. Each time regulars were there talking to each other and the bartenders chatted everyone up too without being annoying. It was a great atmosphere and that's what brought us back. I wish the owners luck although it definitely seems like they don't need it, and I hope to come back up here soon. read more

Came here based on the recommendation of a friend who saw it mentioned on some list of best new Brooklyn bars. Hops Hill is a pretty tiny place. Most of the seating is at the bar (which is marble). They have a wonderful beer selection though. Both bottles and draught. It will probably take you a few minutes to skim through their ever-updating photocopied menus. Definitely had a few beers that I'd never even heard of before. My favorite was the Thirsty Dog Bourbon ale. At 12% ABV, it'll knock you on your ass. I also had a beer called Old Leghumper, admittedly because of the name. That one was also good. We met and spoke to one of the owners, Joe. He was a super chill guy and knew a lot about the beers they stocked. Will definitely be returning. I think I heard inklings about a possible backyard next year... read more

A fantastic beer selection between the taps and the can/bottle list. All very interesting microbreweries. You even have the option of buying Crowlers of beer to take home if you like something on tap. The bartenders are nice and knowledgeable but very busy but still take a few minutes to help you out. I really wanted to like this place but I just couldn't get over the pervasive smell of farts. I thought it would either dissipate or I would get used to it but after 30 minutes in the bar, it didn't get better which doesn't make me feel good about eating and drinking in the establishment. It was winter when I went so going outside wasn't really an option so it might be better with some nice, fresh air. Will consider coming back but with Cardiff Giant much closer to home, I think this might be a one-and-done experience. Sorry guys. read more

I would rate hops hill four and a half stars. They have a relatively large cider selection with three taps dedicated to ciders plus bottled options. There are about a dozen other taps all of which feature craft beers. There is a focus of local brews with options from breweries like Strong Rope. The bartenders are friendly and attentive. Awesome drink selection, awesome music selection, nice environment, busy but not so crowded we couldn't find a seat, short wait, and an AWESOME bartender named Michael who took great care of our group and did tequila shots with me. Taking off one star because there's only one vegetarian food option and there ought to be at least one for those of us who don't like mushrooms (I do, but I was there with a vegetarian friend who hates them). But the portobello mozzarella sandwich is great, so it's not a dealbreaker, and I plan to head back soon! read more

Holy smokes. What a list of beers. Hops hill is a small cozy little nook along Fulton Street. Pretty plain and simple décor. Framed photos of bottles of beer on the walls. The first time I came in here was the dead of winter and some crazy older lady dressed up as a female Santa was macking on everyone in the bar. A couple nearby on a date and the man obviously reading the New York Times the entire time. Heh. It was incredibly entertaining. Recently this past weekend hopped in again after a soccer game. Happy hour is every day (including weekends) until 7pm and is a dollar off all drinks. They not only have a draft beer, bottles, and cans menu but also a cocktail menu. My friend not partial to beer went with something that tasted like apple pie. I went down the dangerous zone and shared a 12% abv beer called Evil Twin I Love You with My Stout Imperial ale and later tried a Pizza Boy IPA on draft. Got to love the names. They have trivia nights on Mondays and also a new food menu of sandwiches that I hadn't noticed the first time I came in. But one of them in particular caught my eye that I have to absolutely come back for to try: the Italian Press ($9): Chorizo, Capocollo, Mortadella, Provolone, Gruyere, on a pressed Ciabata from Amy's Bread. It's everything I love in life put onto a sandwich. The type of crowd in here? Honestly mostly nerd boys geeking out over craft beer. Nothing wrong with that. read more

Love this new addition to the neighborhood. Its no frills and unpretentious vibe is such a relief from the neighboring Hanson Dry, whose mere presence has been ruining my life since they opened a few years ago. The beer selection is excellent, and I've really enjoyed discovering new favorite beers without breaking the bank. All of the bartenders are really friendly and welcoming. The overall vibe of this place is perfect for a quiet conversation with a friend or to have a solo nightcap before bed. I also really enjoy the sense of community at this bar, and it's very easy to spark up a casual conversation with a stranger. One gripe: I want to see a little more decor! The TV and lack of decor on the right-hand wall are a little distracting, but the shelves behind the bar are beautiful and promising. read more

It's not that I had a bad experience per se, but I think Hops Hill is still trying to figure themselves out. Very small location, with a very small group of people - after a while sitting at the bar, it started to feel like I was in someone's kitchen by how small/intimate it felt - I could hear the two other conversations. I'm all down for cozy bars, but this was uncomfortable. Beer list was decent, a bit pricey considering the selection. Food options were hit or miss/unavailable. Decor was minimal at best. Ultimately it's more of a beer cafe than a bar. Granted they are somewhat new, so I'll cut them slack...and probably wait 6 months to see if they last. If they do, I'll try them again! read more

Great beer selection sans the price and pretentiousness of similar beer bars. The vibe is very cozy and welcoming although not suffocating with attention. I spent about fours hours there tasting beers, chatting with the locals and just having a great time with my group of friends. Several patrons brought their own beers for tastings and that was really great because our group got to spread out and talk to the other people at the bar. I noticed several characters coming in alone for the purpose of laid back drinking and socializing, so it seems that this relatively new place is becoming a local hang-out. I also really liked the fact that they are very dog friendly and allow to order food to their bar from outside. We all got some pizza and garlic knots from a place down the street, which was quite nice, and ate at the bar. Oh, and also the parking was excellent, no pay meter and right outside the door - such a welcome relief in Brooklyn! read more

Do you want it to feel like 1994 again? This is your place. Very very chill atmosphere, I went on a Tuesday and it was literally one drunk Irish Millennial lady and one old man at the bar and myself. I don't drink so this is just on the food and the ambiance: I ordered a few sandwiches all of which were totally edible and not bad. Fat white guy was making them so that's always a good sign. He had sandwich written all over him. Pastrami, lox and chicken sandwiches all good and made right. Not fantastic but totally serviceable. Ate every bite, would I go back, probably not but I don't drink - but if I ever wanted to chill and eat a hot pastrami and an ice cold Diet Coke this would be the place to do so. read more

Hops Hill is a tremendous asset to the neighborhood and is easily the top craft beer bar in the area. They have a dozen beers on tap and half a dozen bottles on their menu and everything is carefully curated. They even sell bottles of Westvleteren XII. Most beers run $6-$9. The decor is pretty bare bones and austere but still classy enough for an interesting date. Most of the patrons are up for a little communal conversation and flock to the heart of the place, which is the generous wrap-around bar in the middle. I don't know how to feel about Hops Hill. I have so many friends who enjoy it. It seems like a place that I would love. They have a really large selection of craft beer, but I just don't seem to care for the place. It's got a full bar so if you don't want beer (what the hell is wrong with you), you can opt for some mixed drinks. Don't expect them to make cocktails here. They also have some sandwiches they make on site if you're getting a little hungry. When I went the crowd seemed alright. Nothing to complain about. And apparently they let dogs in as well, which is a plus. Unless you're allergic, in which case "God Bless You." Not because you sneezed, but rather because the lord must hate you. I guess what irked me the wrong way was the prices and the selection. Being a frequent goer to a place like Coven Hoven, they do the same thing but not nearly as good. Things are more expensive, the selection is smaller, and the place isn't as large. Maybe I should give place another shot, but so far it's disappointed me. Excellent selection of craft beer - they had three selections from Hill Farmstead on tap and a nice offering of local brews too. Bartender was friendly and quick to let us have a taste of whatever we wanted before committing. We were there at about 6 on a Saturday. It was very quiet with single people on laptops or couples quietly talking. Bartender was friendly but not especially chatty. Just a few steps from the nearest metro station. I rolled in here at 2:30 AM, a 5-6 appeared to be regulars sat chatting in the bar. I came in uneasily but was easily accommodated. But it was rather quiet during the wee hours. But after me few oddballs came in ordered a cocktail and stared into oblivion in silence. When I was there they it appeared they had the Jack's' Abbey takeover the NYC metropolitan. I had a few of their lagers and some other stuff. They blasted some kind of Metallica/Kreator which was pleasing. The bartender mostly chatted with the "regulars" but that's okay.
