One star review for hospitality. It's nearly 90 degree weather and I ended up taking a seat at one of their outside tables to eat lunch in the shade. Within 5 minutes, one of the employees comes outside to ask if I want to buy a drink. However, I'm almost finished with my lunch and answer no thanks, only for the employee to say in a huff, "Well, next time you should buy something if you want to use our seating." While I understand that as your business, you have the right to do this, it really just comes off as rude and condescending, turning what would've been a nonexistent interaction into a negative one that has completely soured my attitude toward this establishment. Considering that this establishment had roughly a dozen tables and 24 seats with only 4 seats or so occupied when I was around and I wasn't interfering with business on a slow afternoon, there shouldn't have been a problem with simply letting bygones be bygones. If this is what New Yorkers consider hospitality and acceptable behavior, no wonder people from most other states consider the population to be rude. read more

This review is long overdue. Every time I visit my friend who resides on St Johns Place we make a point to grab a beer at the to go window and relax at the bar and enjoy a beer. The interior has a curved wooden ceiling that reminds me of a surf board. The lighting is almost non existent and there is a record player for tunes. The beer list is varied, craft and the server will provide a free sample. The food is also delicious. This past Sunday we shared two paninis. The ciabiatta is from a local bakery and outstanding. We tried vegan Artichoke and white bean and the Salami Picante. The panini is served with salty corn nuts and cornichons. Gold Star gets just that- a gold star! (Ok I'll show myself out now bye) But really- great beer selection and vibe, this is the kind of place you can just grab a beer with friends and just chill and have a great night. We were a group of three on a Saturday afternoon- you can grab a seat inside (at the bar counter or at the tables) or outside (there are about 5 tables.) We had fun going through the menu- pilsners, sour ales, IPAs oh my! Drinks are reasonably priced ($8~) I got a sour ale called the Jelly King that was basically a tangerine flavored beer. I usually don't get sours but really glad I tried this one, it was not that tart. For my second drink, I tried the Barknado, a hazy beer that was citrus-y but also somehow savory at the same time- I swear, it smelled like nori (Roast seaweed)?! We also shared a Fig+Pig sandwich ($14- smoked coppa, speck, provolone, fig jam, arugula & balsamic), which was served with some corn nuts and cornichon. The bread was crusty and delicious, and the fig jam went beautifully with the savory coppa and speck. I wonder if they would consider heat lamps for the outside tables? One visit was enough for me to decide this is gonna be my go-to spot for a beer. My friend and I came on a Sunday around 8pm and had no trouble finding a table, even though it was pretty hopping. There's indoor seating at tables and at the counter, and there's plenty of outdoor seating with tables too. We ordered our beers ($9ish each) after getting very helpful advice from the guy behind the counter. Also some spicy corn nuts ($4) for good measure. The outdoor seating varies from just a few chairs on the edge of the sidewalk, to some having tables. But it's a nice vibe on a beautiful day since you can people-watch and look at the pretty brownstones. Pretty popular bar though, so it is a little difficult to grab these outdoor spots. This is such a cute bar! It really is a gathering spot for the neighborhood and always packed during the spring/summer months. The beers are around $10 each for not-quite-a-pint, which is pretty typical of the area. You can order it from the outdoor counter or at the bar and sit inside or outside. It is pretty difficult to find a seat, but you can usually wait around for a bit. In the morning, they serve coffee instead of beer. It's nothing special, but it's a cute option. This might be a controversial opinion, but beer is great. So many styles to choose from. So many ranges of alcohol content. And so many price ranges. They've got all that in spades at Gold Star. Plus crowlers! Went here twice in two days. It definitely gets busy at night (plus they're kid friendly, which is a thing), but pretty chill in the early afternoon. Lots of seating, but hard to snag a table for a lot of people when it's busier. The elevated stage where they have bottles and cans for sale is a decent compromise. Their draft list is pretty great, though I wish they did tasting pours or flights. Those $7-10 beers add up quickly, especially when most of them are 8 or 10 ounces. They do some bottle pours though, so that's nice. That said, I had some pretty wild beers during my two days here. One was a cherry sour from Canada (Jelly King). Another was a wild ale collab with five different breweries (Miscellanea: Vol 1). And another was an imperial stout brewed with Oreos (Double Dunk). They also have a lot of Upland beers (they make some of my favorite sours). And of course, like I mentioned earlier, you can buy bottles and cans off the shelf (it'll cost a few dollars more to drink them in the bar). Crazy range of prices, with cans ranging form $6 to $24. They also have a limited food menu, with charcuterie sandwiches, meat and cheese plates, beer cheese from Folksbier (served with an entire sleeve of Ritz crackers!!!), and smaller snacks like olives and nuts. Great addition to the neighborhood for beer lovers! Was walking home and pleasantly surprised this place popped out of nowhere. Seemed pretty lively on opening night. The owners are super friendly, and you can tell they love their beer. Nice, eclectic tap selection, as well as bottle selection. Place seems cozy and inviting. Can take growlers to go, and they even have a 'take-out' window. Has a great, friendly neighborhood feel. They got a record player and a shelf full of vinyl that provides the background music. Been into the stouts and porters lately, and they usually have 1-2 of the dark beers on tap, plus 1-4 cans as well. The to-go growlers are a bit expensive. Nice little spot between Park Slope and Crown Heights. Walking distance from the Grand Army Plaza/ Brooklyn Museum/ Prospect Park/ Brooklyn Public Library area. Decent assortment of beers (and a handful of ciders). I got a stout with hints of chocolate and peanut butter (Mast Landing's Gunner's Daughter Milk Stout). It tasted like a boozy Reese's peanut butter cup. I also had another Mast Landing brew called All The Way Up (I'm sure that's a Fat Joe référence). It had hits of raspberry, mango and...lactose. Weird combo, but tart and tasty. The wait staff was great. Didn't have to wait too long for a table for two. You should go sometime. read more

Ever since Prospect Heights Beer Works closed, I've been searching a spot in the neighborhood where I can buy copious amounts of delicious beers at a far and reasonable price. While Goldstar isn't a place you buy in bulk, they have fantastic, tasty, and rare beers. Similar to a spot like Coven Hoven, you can come here to drink on site or take something to go. Whichever you prefer. The prices are a little more expensive than other spots that do the same thing, I find their selection has beers that are harder to find. They also have some pretty good small bites to eat. If you're a beer lover, one who enjoys all types of beers, his is definitely your spot. read more

Great new bar/growler station in the neighborhood with a friendly vibe. The counterman gladly poured us a sample of a black IPA before we plunked down the money for a growler (they come in 32 and 64 oz sizes). Some of the brews are definitely on the pricier side, but there are some pretty great deals as well (under $20 for 64 oz of some of the offerings.) There were some high end bottles for sale too, but I have a feeling there will always be some new draft offering I'd rather try. Really looking forward to stopping by once every couple weeks for a re-fill. There are a couple snacks on the menu that would go along with a few pints at the bar or the communal tables, but food options are limited at the moment--though I wouldn't let that stop you from stopping in for a drink if that's all you're looking for. To my surprise, one of the staff struck up a conversation with me about laundry facilities in apartments and a further convo of all things New York. Johnny, I believe his name was, gave me the most positive memorable experience at this place, and changed the stigma that I had of new businesses in the neighborhood. I went here with my brother and girlfriend on a Saturday and was so blown away I'm currently researching how to break my lease so I can move into a place down the block, no joke. My brother's more of a craft beer nerd than I am and was so happy here he had tears in his eyes. And my girlfriend, who's not much of a beer fan at all, has been talking about the raspberry-coffee weissbier she had there all week, with such adoration you'd think I proposed with it. Expect VERY unique beers you can't find anywhere else (as I'm learning the hard way as I research where to buy cases of everything I loved), with complex notes and brewing methods like maple, lactose, guava, and sea salt -- all of which the menu carefully lays out in a brief description below each rotating draft. The bartenders were incredibly helpful and friendly, the food was pretty awesome too, and the draft list changed twice while we were there (to be fair, we stayed about 4 hours).
