I ended up here because of an instagram video about the owner. This is a Black owned business, which is that much more important when it comes to support. Very moody, low lit place with a huge collection of vinyl along the bar wall. I had the Allison Road, made with gin, dry vermouth, apricot liqueur, and orange bitters, described as "A smooth and aromatic gin cocktail that walks the line between floral and fruity." I also had the Junmai Spritz, recommended by the bartender, made with umami/saki, strawberry, ginger, and seltzer. Described as, "Crisp and refreshing, with subtle umami from sake, bright strawberry fruit, and hint of ginger spice." They also have drinks featuring rye, whiskey, rum, mezcal. Flavors of jalapeño, honey, orange, vanilla and chocolate. They have a HUGE beer list. Most of the menu is Japanese inspired. The bartender was kind, attentive, and very laid back. Other than a couple patrons here and there, I was the only person in there on a Wednesday afternoon. They say it gets busier on weekends. They also have a DJ on weekends, usually playing R&B and hiphop. They played mostly jazz when I was in, and it was very relaxing. BierWax is a craft beer and vinyl record listening bar that opened in Brooklyn, New York in 2017. It was founded by DJ and record collector Chris Maestro. Born in Queens to a Guyanese father and a Dominican mother, Maestro grew up in Flushing, Queens with a fervent love for hip-hop. He started DJing in his early 20s and has collected records obsessively ever since, particularly in genres that gave rise to hip-hop: funk, soul and jazz. He was bitten by the craft beer bug during a trip to Hong Kong in 2005, and his search for new brews led him to craft beer festivals and brewery tours. Early on, Maestro noticed that there weren't a lot of people of color at craft breweries or craft beer bars. He longed to open his own space where people like him could feel right at home and discover new beer in the process. In addition to BierWax's finely curated tap list, the bar is also home to over 5,000 vinyl records. The bar frequently hosts guest DJs as well. BierWax has a strict "No Requests Please" policy--not because of "High Fidelity"-style snobbery, but because there are just too many records⁠ to manage. If every customer made a request, the bar would need a dedicated team just to comb through the stacks. And then who would pour the beer? I visited BierWax this past summer while I was cycling around NYC. I was trying out a number of Brooklyn and Queens breweries and pizzerias and this was my second stop of the day. Craft beer and vinyl are two of my favorite loves, so I felt right at home here. Not only was I impressed by the craft beer selection but also the enormous amount of vinyl records adorning the shelves on the wall. There was a great playlist going during my visit and the bartender on duty was a really cool guy who engaged in some great conversation with me. I enjoyed pours of The Seed's "As Simple As Renewal?" (Kellerbier) and The Drowned Lands' "Summer Terra" (Double New England IPA). Both of them were fantastic! Although craft beer bars that feature vinyl are becoming more common now, BierWax is a place that is truly special. There's just something about a bar that spins vinyl records - the vibes cannot be matched. I've been here a few times, but was finally able to go at night when they have a DJ and had a great time with my friends. The drinks are strong and the bartenders are friendly. As with most vinyl bars, they don't take request, so don't expect that, but they play a nice variety of music from R&B to jazz and more. The inside isn't too big. It's mostly bar seating, but the backyard patio is very spacious and would be good for larger groups. I will definitely be back! read more

This is the first place I go to and actually see diversity. There is a lack of representation of my beautiful colored people in the craft beer industry and bierwax really made me feel at home. Came across this Prospect Heights gem this past weekend while strolling through the neighborhood, and so glad I stopped by! Not only does it have a fantastic list of beers on tap as well as bottles, but they are also reasonably priced and you can get many (if not all) of the drafts in taster vs other sizes as well. Some of our favorites were the Killsboro Gimme Gimme More Juice (fruited sour) and the Oxbow Imperial Saison. The ambiance of this spot is also pretty special. The place is definitely music and beer forward (and the friendly bartender working curated an awesome playlist from many of the records and CDs - def a nostalgic throwback). Also it's spacious with a large enclosed back patio (seems perfect for spring summer and fall). Will be back again next time in the neighborhood for sure! read more

I came here intentionally because there was a deal with a separate app. This was out of my typical comfort zone but an always willing to try something new. I went in without that much prior research and though I knew they had craft beers on tap, I didn't know the general vibe. It was very audiophile focus with albums in shelves throughout the place and photos of famous artists/rappers. It was Saturday and packed and there were a lot of jams. They had drinks on tap and with bottles. Other than beers, they also had ciders, wines and cocktails. I did cider because I favor that more and it was a chill glass. Apparently you can avoid fees by paying in cash but I didn't see the sign until after. Also the bathroom is really on the small side so I would keep that in mind when visiting. Because it was packed and it is a small place, I didn't try to stay as long. I would try either coming early in the weekend (after eating since there is not really food) or during the week. I did love the music here and the overall vibe. I think on a not so packed day, this could be a good place to have a second date or meet up with friends. read more

They have a small Covering in the front with 4 tables great for sidewalk people watching. Often during warmer Months they have Vanderbilt closed on the weekends, allowing for a ton of outdoor Seating. For a beer lover this is a MUST visit, the menu is unparalleled. On a nice and chilly Thursday night, I came here after watching the Nets lose to the Pistons on home-adjacent (the Nets are originally from New Jersey! Even with the name change, they're still from New Jersey!) court only to be totally blown away by the utter friendliness of the bartender and surprisingly, by a beer I had here! It was a something-something-pineapple-upside-down-cake. It was the juiciest beer ever and that is the 3rd time in life that I have ever had alcohol that tasted good (the other two were smoothie beers). I was highly impressed! The atmosphere is so chill and peaceful! It was largely empty when I walked in and within minutes, a pretty nice crowd entered! What a great spot. Went recently with a good friend and beer enthusiast who heard this was a must-go-to new bar...and he was right! The bartender was quite knowledgable and the atmosphere very chill. But then, with the record-laden decor and musician are on the walls, it would be strange if that vibe wasn't created. The bartender says they pick the records right from the shelf quite randomly, which is dope because it seems that every record is the right one. I mean, if you want trap music it isn't, but if you're looking to chill with friends, or even on a date, then you're set. And oh yeah, the beers are great too! Quality: Hard not to be a fan of a beer bar that cares about music almost as much as beer. They had a solid draft beer list, focused on local options, but also a full bar menu for folks that prefer wine or cocktails. They also have vinyls for sale, and were playing excellent music throughout our visit. Quantity: Excellent pours, up to the rim, making it a challenge to carry without spilling. Value: $8-$10 for Draft Pours. Ambiance: BierWax is located in the Prospect Heights area of Brooklyn. When you enter it is a very chic dark space. A long bar stretches the right wall, with the massive vinyl collection on display. The beer list is created with a bunch of colorful letters, adding a bit of fun to the space. Towards the back of the indoor area they had a single comfortable couch. They also have a large backyard patio with a roof and multiple heaters. We settled into a picnic table outside near a heater and didn't notice the weather at all. Always expect great music here. Crowd: A small crowd on a warm Thursday evening. Most folks took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather by sitting outside. Service: Great and knowledgable bartender. The pretty courtyard looked like it had a food table where you could purchase bites. The temp was a bit toasty to hang out. Just thought I'd mention there were some kids hanging with a birthday party (late afternoon) and this seemed fine with the establishment and the kids were cute and well behaved. I was a tad skeptical walking in here--craft beer + vinyl sounding like some obnoxious hipster daydream--and walked out having discovered my newest favorite bar. Bierwax is a perfectly chill bar, with cool, knowledgeable bartenders pouring you an excellent assortment of craft beers. Whether they have a DJ spinning tunes or the bartender is running the show, the music is integral but also supplemental--hip and diverse (as you would expect from the acres of vinyl on their walls)--but not pumped to 11 so as to distract from your bar experience or convos with friends. Stevie is the quintessentially perfect bartender. She listened to my beer taste preferences and offered up some excellent suggestions, both tap and bottle. I started with a great Transmitter sour on tap, but when I wanted to move to darker beers for a nightcap, she steered me to the bottle list for a couple of special gems. Did you know there is a beer brewed with Oreo cookies? And that it is even better than you could possibly dream it would be? That's the kind of magic you get from cool bartenders who know their customers and their stuff.
