My daughter, son in law, and husband went on a Saturday, first week of the new year and had a blast!!! We were there for about 4 hours, going one at a time in "private lessons" with Jeff. First he has us look through the shop and select the patterns and colors we each liked. Then he works either each person individually, getting an understanding of our vision and explaining the overall process. He explains each step and talks you through it, constantly reassuring, complimenting, even celebrating how you do. He keeps checking our understanding or gently "correcting" by saying things like "great job with that, now this time, try to..." And as you move through the process, he is there every minute, every moment, every step of the way, and making sure he is helping us make our vision in glass! With each of our visions different, the pieces we made were unique. I wanted the bits of color to remain a bit of texture (like a piece I'd found in the shop), with an open hole in the ball for filling with agates, and a clear "window" for seeing the rocks inside. Jeff was amenable to leaving the open hole (which I plan to plug with a large cork) and the "clear window" worked! It was a special family activity and an experience we're sure to remember. Of course we've got the glass bowls and balls in case we need a reminder! Sure the glass molding and blowing was fun, but honestly, I can't imagine a better instructor and coach than what we experienced with Jeff!!!! Highly recommend it!!! read more

This shop is amazing and the staff is outstanding. They have a showroom full of beautiful things to buy. But the real gem is doing the glass blowing. We came here as a family of 4 with two kids being 12 and 9. The man showing us and teaching us was the best. Worked nice and slow with the kids making sure they were comfortable and had a good time and were safe. We all had so much fun. One of the best things to do at the coast. I want to come do it again and again. This is the place to come if you're wanting to try glass work. This place is worth supporting just give it a try. You will be in love. read more

Jeff and Amanda have an awesome studio in Newport where we created a beautiful vase. My wife is an artist who loves to paint flowers in vases and loves the cobalt blue color. Jeff is a masterful instructor who is exceptionally talented at patiently and safely explaining while performing the glass blowing process. Jeff makes you feel good while ensuring the piece is created to perfection. We were in Eugene for Nike Nationals and my wife and 14 year old both ranked The Hot Shop as the top experience of the trip...even over Haywood Field which is awesome! The drive through the mountains is beautiful and walking on the beach at Newport was memorable. Amanda efficiently handled the paperwork and was great at communicating. The vase arrived at our house packaged very well and in a timely manner. Unlike other glass blowing shops, Jeff can make larger items and is extremely fair on the price. Do yourself a favor and let Jeff and Amanda help you create a lasting memory you will cherish. We will definitely plan to create a glass piece with them next time we're in Oregon! read more

Wow! Taking a glass blowing class at The Hot Shop with Jeff was one of the highlights of our trip to the Oregon Coast. The time flew by as my husband and I made our glass art pieces. It was so much fun and our pieces turned out more beautiful than we expected. It was all due to Jeff's clear instructions, adding extra techniques to add interest to our pieces and him making sure each step was done correctly. I made a vase and my husband a bowl. Jeff is a natural teacher and a talented artist. He is knowledgeable, experienced, reassuring, friendly and laidback. He let us do as much or as little as we wanted ( we wanted to do as much as possible). We got exactly what we wanted and were involved the whole time. When I came to a part I wasn't feeling confident about I asked him if he would do that part and he jumped right in there and did it. It was easy to signup for a class online Before we started, Jeff gave us options on colors, styles etc and after getting an idea of what we wanted he made it happen. He led us through each step and taught us about the equipment and supplies, safety, why each step is done, different techniques used in glass making, lots of facts about glass and its properties and even about famous glass artists. He was more than willing to answer all of our questions. We had lots It is clear Jeff loves what he is doing and enjoys sharing his passion for glass blowing with others. We are so glad we found The Hot Shop and look forward to our next trip to the Coast when we can create some new pieces with Jeff. If you don't have time for a class, I recommend stopping by and buying an already made piece. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary on the coast and decided we wanted to take a glass blowing class. We had stopped by the place in Lincoln City (Taft) several times in the past. I searched yelp for something closer to Seal Rock (where we were staying) and The Hot Shop came up. We are SOOOOO glad we decided to go here. Jeff was a great teacher and allowed us to work the glass through the entire process. From shaping to adding color to forming the float and finally blowing it up to size. Jeff provided guidance and instruction the entire time allowing us to complete our own masterpiece. Jeff was so amazing and helpful, and his family was just the sweetest! We did three classes and due to coast highway construction (go figure eh?) we were fifteen minutes late. With a quick phone call he was completely understanding about it and he had left plenty of time after our appt until his next one so we still got to do all three of our pieces. Jeff talked to us first finding out what we wanted in shape, color and size. He listened to us about translucency and opaqueness. He really listened to what we each wanted to do. This was by far the best expirence I have had blowing glass. Jeff, the owner is a great teacher and is very knowledgeable on both the art and it's history. He is also an amazing artist. You will not only learn the how to, but he will also drop some historical facts on you as you work. It was very interesting. He also lets you do about 98% of the work on your project, unlike other shops. But at any time, if you ask, he will step in if you are not feeling comfortable with any part. This shop is truley family owned and operated. And you can tell, both Jeff and his wife are very personable and they seemed to really care about their customers. Prices are just a bit lower than other shops in the area, which is nice. And he is much more flexible on the projects he offers. What you get for your money is a great time, an education and an outstanding project piece you made and will enjoy for years to come. If you are anywhere near Newport OR.
