My former (beloved) tree company went out of business sometime after Snowpocalypse. Unhappy with the bids I received from several companies I contracted through Yelp, I remembered using the HOW Foundation at my former residence. I'm holding back a star for now until the job is finished. They have to schedule the stump grinding for a different day. They did a great job trimming about 10 trees and removing 2 dead ones. They arrived within the time window & were finished in less than 2 hours. They cleaned up the limbs & mess. Very impressed. The price was unbelievable. The HOW Foundation is an underrated non-profit organization whose mission is to "help people overcome their addiction through meaningful and productive work that helps them and the community" (https://howfoundationsa.org/about/). We've used HOW several times over the last few years for tree-trimming services, but this last time was the first time we've used them for an entire tree removal (30 ft). Dennis is usually the person who comes out to survey what I need and gives me a quote. As a fellow Aggie, I appreciate his honesty and transparency. Dennis shoots straight and always quotes me the lowest among all tree-trimming services in the area. We set up a date for the tree-trimming crew to come out, which, in this case, was about one month out. Before any crews showed up at my front door, their front office called me to tell me they had a team on the way. I appreciate the heads-up to ensure I'm home and available. Roy was the team lead of the crew that took down my sizeable red cedar tree in the backyard. Roy was also the climber who climbed up using ropes and a harness to cut down limbs and branches systematically. It was quite a sight seeing his team work together to achieve the common goal of removing this big tree without anyone getting hurt or any of my property getting damaged! As part of the quote, I asked for firewood-sized pieces to be cut from the tree. As promised, I was given about 16-18-inch pieces of firewood to dry this year in preparation for next year. Unfortunately, some limbs weren't cut to size, which I tossed away. Roy also told me that a stump grinding crew would come out later to grind the tree stump so that the tree wouldn't grow back. Much to my surprise, I was called later in the day to let me know the stump grinding crew could come out the next day! So the following day, it was a bit rainy, but the two-man crew still came out and got the job done. The pictures don't do it justice, but it's hard to tell a tree was ever after they were finished. Even though there were a couple of hiccups during the process, I am very satisfied with The HOW Foundation and its crews. They do exceptional work, are professional, and are on time. The bonus is that half of what I pay is tax-deductible, and the job benefits the crew members by helping them overcome their addictions. I call that a win-win! read more

I had several quotes to remove an old Arizona Ash and HOW was by far the most inexpensive. I read mixed reviews but my experience was fantastic. They called several times when I first made the appointment and then called to confirm a few days before the appointment. This is the 2nd year in a row that we have used HOW foundation to trim our trees. Both times we have been very satisfied with the results. They communicate all the way through the process and today when they came out it was raining. That did not keep them from doing a great job. We will definitely call again next year. We've begun a new home build on an empty lot, and needed substantial help clearing dense Cedar Trees. The H.O.W. Absolutely awful and DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. Unhelpful, unprofessional and false advertising. I used HOW several years ago for a fairly small job and they were helpful, thorough and relatively affordable so I called them this spring to remove some large dead limbs hanging over my roof and my neighbor's roof and driveway. I called in May and they said they couldn't do the job until September 15. They also wanted much more for the work than the estimates I'd received from a couple other companies. Plus they wanted a $1,000 deposit. I wanted to support the idea of helping addicts and alcoholics in sobriety so I decided to use HOW. BIG MISTAKE. On August 18 a large limb broke and tipped down to my roof, balancing there while still partly attached to the tree. It looked as if it was going to collapse the rest of the way, damaging the roof, tearing off the gutter at any moment so I called, explained that it was an emergency and asked for help. They advertise Emergency Service, but the response I got was to wait until September 15 and they'd "put a big star" by my name in case something came up sooner. I kept trying to explain the tree was not going to wait and finally was told I'd hear back that Monday. No call came on Monday and by 4:30 I called them and was told the office was closed. Advertised 24 hour response is not true. Meanwhile I was emailing their office for help and asking about either Emergency Service or getting my deposit back so I could call another tree service. The limb fell farther and looked even more precariously balanced. I gave up on HOW and called another company. The new company came the next day and I called the local HOW office to ask for my deposit back. First they told me NO REFUNDS. They were prepared to keep $1,000 for no work done and I protested. So what I finally heard was they would issue a check on December 1. No explanation of why I have to wait another three months to get my money back unless they're hoping I forget about it. Very disappointing and a truly bad experience. read more

They came right away and removed the branch that had laid down on the roof during the ice storm. The rest of the work is scheduled for May. They are busy! Looking forward to May. They always do a good job and explain everything. they are also very practical and don't try to get you to schedule work you don't really need. A nice group of folks to help you from start to finish, and behind a great mission of helping former addicts get work experience. I called and made an initial estimate appointment in June. Two folks came to the house and took a look at the giant oak in the front yard, and some bamboo and crepe myrtles in the backyard and quoted me $800, and that they are busy until August. August also happened to be the best time to cut back live oak so that worked for me. I got a reminder phone call a day or two before my appointment. A group of workers showed up on time and got to work pretty quickly. They did a decent job, but didn't carry all of the debris away, and forgot to leave the oak branches for firewood (which they offer to you for free). They were very easy to work with. One thing: these workers aren't paid, but they take CASH ONLY tips. Make sure to have cash on hand, there is NO option for Venmo or check or paying at a later date. I felt really bad I didn't know this ahead of time or wasn't reminded, but the workers were nice about it. I'm taking one star off because communication around the appointment scheduling was confusing and because of the debris left in the yard. read more

Our giant ash had died during the freeze. A large limb hung perilously over the roof of the house and partly over the neighbor's lawn. We had done business with the HOW Foundation the year before and found them to be honest and responsive. We called again, they came right out to take down that precariously balanced limb over the house. Didn't charge us but gave us an estimate to remove the entire tree and stump. They did all the city's paperwork and came back and removed the entire tree and stump. They were professional and careful not to damage the house. I've hired HOW on at least two occasions - once to remove a dead tree and to ground down the stump and once to clean and raise up the tree canopies on my property. These folks are exceptional! I live in Austin, TX. A very large Arizona Ash died after the February 2021 storm. I called HOW in Oct 2021 for an estimate. They gave me a March 2022 date of service. I put down the deposit and locked it in. They called me before the date and confirmed the service and arrival time. The crew with two trucks and trailers came in and went over the agreed contract with me, checked in with me multiple times, and allowed me to bombard them with questions. The giant ash was between my and my neighbor's yard. It was enormous and these guys strength, knowledge, and skill brought the entire tree down safely. They trimmed my other ash that had not died and gave it a nice healthy crown. This is a great organization with incredibly skilled professionals! I would not hesitate to hire them again. read more

I don't normally write reviews but I'm super happy with the work the guys did today. We had a huge yucky ash tree growing into our red oak that they took care of and got off our property line. They cleaned up the trees that were touching our house and roof and even grabbed an extra branch for me that had snapped but was way up high. Everyone was super friendly from start to finish. One of their drivers drove over my yard after it rained and caused a 30' rut in my yard. I asked them to fix it and the told me it's not their problem. Be careful using the HOW foundation. When they 1st come out and do the estimate of the work, they seem to be vague in the the work you want done. When the work crew comes, they always want to talk you into less. They will argue with you and THEIR interpretation of what they think the agreement says is what they will stick with. It seems that it has nothing to do with what you requested when you had them give you the bid. read more

The work done was fine. No problem- they cleaned up. They had to come back to cut back a tree stump- no problem with that. However, the customer service was a little questionable. I got a phone call early on the day that I was to meet up with them to pay them. The person on the phone told me that they were running a little late, and to expect them closer to 3pm that day. While leaving to meet them at the later time, I got another call saying they were already there. It was about 2:20-2:30. I arrived at 2:45, still 15 min early of the changed time. A comment that was made to me- "Did I get lost, or something?" was uncalled for. H.O.W. was the one who changed the time to 3pm and I was actually EARLY. I found it annoying that they were trying to blame me because they had to wait. It would probably be a better idea for them to give a "window" with the earliest time they would arrive instead of a set time, like the 3pm I was given. read more

They have never taken advantage of me not knowing anything about raising canopies or which trees are fine and which should come down, I will never use anyone else. We have a big tree in the back yard and was splitting in the center by the storm, which is providentially threaten the house and the fence on either side. H.O.W. provided a competitive price amount others on removing the tree. Frank and his team worked diligently to remove the trunks and other team hauled the brunched away, later. Unfortunately, we noticed one of the sprinkle pipe underground was damaged afterward. H.O.W. sent another team to fix it next day. The advantage is the tree service covers a deep grinding on the root which is most of time with additional cost from contractors. I like to use H.O.W. I used HOW foundation to remove a large hackberry and prune up several other trees. Their price was by far the best and they showed up on time and did a great job including a thorough clean up.
