Humble Toast was highway robbery, literally. After having a mediocre dinner at this hole-in-the-wall restaurant, I was presented with the check. I gave my credit card. The manager of the restaurant, who also doubles as a waiter, ran the card and gave me the credit card back with no to leave a tip. I knew something was up. When I asked the manager to print out the receipt, he fumbled for 5 to 10 minutes. To make a long story a little short, he had padded my bill with a bogus 35% tip that I never authorized and did not know about. The manager was rude and did not even apologize for this larceny. Besides, literally stealing money by putting in a bogus tip, not informing me and trying to cover it up, this restaurant was horrible. -There were four diners at our table. Each main dish was served one at a time. By the time, all four plates were on the table, three of the entrees were stone cold. -I ordered the basic burger with onions. There were no onions. The bun was twice as big as the burger. The same thing with the pastrami sandwich: lots of bread, a little bit of pastrami. -The water glasses were dirty. -The staff were untrained and rude. One of the waiters spilled water all over the floor. Another one dropped a dish. I felt like I needed to take shelter under the table. I am going to report this shady, disreputable trash can to the Better Business Bureau. It is establishments like this that need to be weeded out so that kosher restaurants, many which are good and run by responsible people, do not continue to be be tainted by the rotten apple in the barrel. read more

Very sweet staff. I ordered the sweet potato fries and regular fries and they were one of the best fries I have EVER tasted. This evening I ordered food from Humble Toast for us & one of our grandsons. We received our order through Grub Hub & the order belonged to someone else. Grub Hub apparently took the wrong order from the restaurant--inconveniencing two customers. When I called the restaurant, the "gentleman" who answered the phone informed me, in a very curt manner, that the issue was with Grub Hub and not with Humble Toast--even though they gave the driver the incorrect order. When I told him that it was the restaurant's responsibility to insure that the correct order goes to the correct driver--he told me it was not their problem & hung up on me. A few minutes later, the mashgiach called me back. He was very polite--but very unhelpful. He also repeated that this was not the restaurant's responsibility. I disagreed and explained that the restaurant received the bulk of the money from the order ( that we never received) and not Grub Hub. I will never order from The Humble Toast again. Luckily, Grub Hub refunded us our money. My grandson got his chicken nuggets from Schnitzel Plus, but had to eat them in the car, because by the time his food finally came--it was time for him to go home! read more

Finally tried this local spot and was impressed with the space, staff and wide variety of offerings. My family tried the Jerry sandwich, Buffalo chicken sandwich & traditional burger. Based on our opinion the pastrami came out on top in terms of fresh and supreme quality. The Buffalo chicken was a little less than we expected and the burger was pretty good except it's listed as MW but in some spots felt a little less "done". The staff was very attentive, patient and friendly all throughout no matter who took care of what. The spot itself was clean and comfortable, perfect for a variety of gatherings. Based on all the great reviews I decided to pop in for lunch. The owner seemed friendly as he said hello as I walked in and asked if I had been here before. Upon hearing I hadn't he informed me that they make all the items on the menu in house (except for the bread). This is the type of place I like to support. I quickly peruse the menu and decide on the Jerry (house cured and smoke pastrami, remoulade sauce, coleslaw, grilled marble rye). I place my order with the person behind the counter and am asked if I want fries or a side salad with the sandwich (I chose the salad). What I didn't realize in making this decision was that the fries and salad are both add ons and not included with the sandwich. The menu does state this (so I should have paid closer attention) but I feel like the way I asked made it seem like I had a choice of one or the other. What exasperates me more is the bill came to $21. I hadn't realized the sandwich was $16 (fries are $3 extra and the salad was $4 extra). Okay for the price this better be the best pastrami sandwich I've ever had.... so, was it? No, this is not the best pastrami sandwich. The saving grace was the pastrami. It has a nice smoky peppery flavor. However, the slaw was just okay, fairly standard and the remoulade was barely noticeable. The worst part was the Brooklyn Bred branded bread. It wasn't toasty enough, dispite the grilled claim (in the description), and honestly just wasn't very good. Marble Rye is usually delicious but this bread I actually removed after a few bites and just ate the pastrami. The $4 salad was standard lettuce, cucumber, tomato and onion (I saw the owner critiquing it to the chef and cook before it went in my to go bag and almost thought he was going to have them redo it; I wish I could have heard the exchange). I feel given the price the salad should be included with the sandwich as neither are worth their individual cost. So as I said in my opening "this is the type of place I like to support" and now that I've supported it I don't need to come back. I really don't care, but don't make a point to say it's homemade. The other thing that bothered me was the beef bacon. It was ice cold and tasted old. Really disappointing because I love beef bacon, I paid extra for extra bacon and it was bad. My friends got different variety of chicken and they liked their food which I was happy about because I treated my friend and her kids since we were celebrating a special occasion. Second bathroom I tried was also filthy but the toilet wasn't clogged so I had to use it. Took 30 min to get 4 sandwiches to go. With prices like that I expected WAY more. Corned beef was skimpy and lacking flavor. You couldn't taste the horseradish at all on the French dip. Tasted like a regular Mayo. Just terrible all around. We went here after the Teaneck street fair today. The place is clean and has a well designed interior. The menu has just the right amount of options. The waiter was friendly but did not offer suggestions or elaborate when asked a food item question. I had the pastrami on rye with fries, my wife had the beef burrito. The pastrami sandwich was decent and my wife really liked hers. I thought they were both good but nothing memorable. The burrito was pretty small, especially for $16. The pastrami amount was proper but again $16 and it doesn't come w fries? This ain't Katz or 2nd Ave where's it known everything is a la carte. This is Teaneck, at that price you give fries. Lastly they don't have silverware. Everything is plastic disposables. Again if it was a dive serving $5 hoagies or burgers, ok, but you are charging normal dining prices, have the decency to serve your customers with silverware. I have to say the whole grain mustard is exactly what these dishes deserve. The kraut on the sandwich is the best krait I have ever had. They seasoned it perfectly!
