Best pastrami on rye we've had in Bergen County in a long, long while. Add some of their delicious Cole slaw, a little mustard and Dr Browns cream soda and you've got a great lunch. There are no shortcuts. The Kasha varnishkas are the best I've had (excepting for my mothers) The brisket is so tender and tasty and never salty. All of the salads are exceptional; super fresh. Got the Hot Pastrami with sauerkraut, mustard, and pickles on the side along with the Hot Brisket sandwich with mustard, Mayo, and pickles on the side. My recommendation is to eat the Hot Brisket sandwich first (of course, I did the opposite, and my chef of a husband ate things in the right order bc I didn't appreciate the flavor of the brisket as much after eating the pastrami). As someone else pointed out, if you're looking for NYC-level deli quality here, you're not going to be particularly impressed. However, if you're hankering for some Jewish deli food in the area, it will do. Personally I thought the matzo ball was decent. Not the best I ever had but it was just fine. Same goes for some of the other stuff we got including the potato salad and Cole slaw. It was just fine but not mind blowing. The pastrami was also somewhat disappointing. Maybe my expectations were too high based on what I read here but I didn't find it particularly tasty or flavorful. Conversely, it was good that the meat wasn't that salty. Again, compared to what I had in the city I didn't find the food here to be as good as what I enjoyed there but generally speaking it was ok. A solid 3 stars in my book. read more

This is my go to place for catered trays of the type of epic sandwiches than one can only order in Northern New Jersey. Back in the 1930's, the mayor of Maplewood visited an establishment in Havana called Sloppy Joes. They served him a cocktail sandwich so memorable, he had it recreated at a kosher deli on his return home. This transplanted triple decker sandwich, is not the bunned tomato saucy ground meat of the same name, but of sliced deli delights. Deli Sloppy Joe's are made of Pastrami, Roast Beef, Turkey Breast on three layers of thinly sliced Rye bread with coleslaw and Russian dressing. The fraternal twin fish course is the Smokey Joe made of Sliced Nova Scotia Lox and Whitefish Salad and Egg Salad on three layers of thinly sliced Rye Bread. I order a 1.5 serving tray of each so that there are a few left for a snack after the main event. Do get more than you think you need. You'll thank me later. Break your anti sugar clause and wash it all down with some Dr. Brown's soda. read more

When at Foster Village Kosher Deli, all the prepared food in the display showcases looked great. After taking my food home and tasting the first item, it was a huge disappointment. When there is so much sugar in the prepared bean salad that the sweetness lingers in your mouth, you remain hopeful that the next item you sample will be an improvement. Unfortunately, that was not the case. It appears that the same yellow oil used to soak the roasted vegetables side dish is used to thoroughly soak the chicken and vegetable entree. My wife likes to come into Northern New Jersey for Filipino Supplies and we usually hit up Monsey for Kosher supplies for n the way home, but today while I was waiting I found this place on Yelp. First of all I really like to thank the owners for keeping it strictly kosher instead of going kosher style. Yes the store seemed really narrow and crowded with extra stuff.but it's the week before Pesach (Passover) and I realized this place the extra stuff was for catering for Passover. The food is really good, almost like my mother and bubba's use to make. I had a corned beef sandwich to go which was really good, wish I would have stayed to eat it there as it needed more mustard. The Tzimmiss was a bit watery and had to much cinnamon but that's just my taste it could have used prunes. We ordered Passover dinner from here as a package - the best we ever ate !! Everything is home made good !! There were things that I normally don't like but when I tasted theirs it was delicious. I also have to say that they not only gave big portion's, but it was all packaged really well. I sent our guest home with a big bag for tomorrow and I have plenty left - which is just fine with us. I have also gone in to find that they just had fresh out of the oven items such as stuffed chicken breast or meatballs - nothing was bad. The owner and staff were very helpful - lovely to deal with. Grew up in NJ but living in Honolulu for 20+ years, I need a regular fix of Jersey Jew food and this is my go-to place. Got off the airplane and headed straight to Foster Village. Absolutely to die for. My wife and I consumed a pastrami sandwich, spinach knish, square potato knish, veggie latke, matzo ball soup, Dr Browns soda and a coffee for lunch. Exceeded expectations. Everything perfect and half the price of the touristy Katz, Harolds, Noah, etc. places. Super friendly staff are friendly, ultra accommodating and service was lightning fast. I enjoyed just sitting listening to the customer interactions. I felt like I was home again. I haven't been to FVKD for years and was so looking forward to revisiting. Major disappointment. First, the narrow-cluttered aisles made it difficult to accommodate my walker. The Yelp photos from July 2021 and February 2022 did not reflect the condition of the aisle spaces when I was just there. Before I was going to order meats by the pound in the future, I ordered a "sampling" of their meats. I ordered three slices each of corned beef, pastrami, and brisket. Also, got a kasha knish, and a friend got one pound each of three salads and a quart of chicken soup and matzoh balls. The pastrami consisted of very small strands of the meat. The corned beef also consisted of varying smaller sized pieces of meat. The brisket consisted of about normal sized slices, but the color appeared a bit off, it appeared dry, and the taste seemed off. All three meats were cold. I weighed the salads at home and all three were under a pound. Don't know where their scale is, and I don't know what I was charged as there wasn't an itemized bill provided. The 3-bean salad had so much liquid I asked for the liquid to be removed before I paid. When was the salad weighed for pricing before or after the drain, I wonder. The 3-bean salad was overly sweet, too. The kasha knish also tasted "sweet" and the taste seemed off. The chicken soup and matzah balls were average tasting. Would not get it again, though. I grew up in the Bx and Queens and know my kasha Knishes and my Kosher Delis. I was eagerly awaiting this revisit, but this was a major disappointment! Perhaps, I'll try again and will have to be more aware of what I'm getting, the quality of the products, the weights, and the cost. My concern remains the maneuvering of my walker in the store. read more

I went in to order 2 soups. All I wanted was a motzah ball and chicken noodle. Little did I know this would be the hardest thing possible. After an exhausting back and forth with the counter person who first tried to push cold pre package soup on me because they were too lazy to heat up any I thought we had made some progress. I was wrong. He brings me out 2 large containers (Chinese soup size) of broth with a few noodles in each. I was confused as I wanted one motzah. He said oh the motzah balls are extra, how many do you want? I said ok but what about the chicken noodle. He said oh this is it it's called chicken noodle but there's no actual chicken in it. Ok Long story short they wanted to charge me $8 for each container of chicken broth & then in addition $1.50 for each motzah ball. So $22 for 2 broths and 3 motzah balls & zero chicken. Give me a break. The best part is the menu lists all the soups for $5. I asked and he said oh that's for a small and it comes w a motzah ball. Ok so if I buy a large for $8 it doesn't come with any? All I wanted was a freaking bowl of soup instead I got migrane. believe me I didn't even know where to start when writing this review. No one would believe this nonsense. On Saturday June 11, 2022 we had an Awards Night and 70th Anniversary for Temple Avodat Shalom in our synagogue in River Edge, N.J. Tal catered and delivered the food for the event.
