I am not by any means a cigar aficionado, I just like to smoke cigars and know only a little. But, it is probably best if you know what you want when you go to this store because I am not sure the guy working there (at least the day I went) and in his defense, I don't expect him to know every last detail about every cigar. If he was the owner, I would expect that, but he isn't. The prices are very reasonable. I had a good idea of what I was looking for before I got there and they had a few Davidoff's that were much cheaper than the tobacconist shop in Burlingame. The only thing that is a bummer is that you can't smoke there. Ok, I don't smoke at all. So why did I go in here? Well, I've been trying to clean the Kid's straws from his sippy cups. Could not find anything that would fit into the hole. I finally figured out that I need a good pipe cleaner to do it. Question is, where do I find a pipe cleaner that actually cleans (not the arts & crafts kind)? On a chance, I went into this store (formerly Sherlock's Haven) to ask if they carried this. As a matter of fact they do and it was pretty cheap (35 for $1+ and 100 for $2+). I made a special trip to the city just to visit this humidor bc they close so early (6pm) and since I got home from work at 4pm and had to cross the baybridge to get here, I had to leave quick. The humidor is located on the first floor of 1 embarcadero center. **WARNING** PARKING IS $6 PER 30MINS IN THE GARAGE BUT THIS IS CHEAP COMPARED TO GETTING A PARKING TICKET IF YOU SHOULD DECIDE TO RISK PARKING ON THE STREET. The humidor is a small one and carry a small yet decent selection of sticks. The owner is helpful and very nice and pleasant to talk with. Prices will be slightly higher due to the draconian taxes levied on tobacco by the state and city of S.F. (of which I despise). There is no smoking lounge bc you cannot smoke indoors in the police state of a city since THEY KNOW WHAT'S BEST FOR YOU. I spent $12 for parking in the garage and bought a $15 Fuente Hemmingway corona which I then proceeded to the Cigar Bar on Pacific and Montgomery to smoke. If you are in the area, stop by and check it out but it will cost you one way or another due to the parking constraints. read more

I don't smoke. At all. Ever. Nothing against cigars--they smell good, and you look like an old-school G when you're smoking them--but they pretty consistently make me sick, so I just appreciate them from afar. Anyway, it's the gentleman's birthday and I am way too excited about it, so I conceived of some nebulous idea to buy him a box of cigars. "A box." That was my whole plan. Clearly, I have no clue what I'm doing. Thankfully, the guy working at Humidor was ridiculously helpful, explaining the cigar-making process to me and analogizing cigars to wine and scotch whenever possible (if there's one thing my brain understands, it's booze). Now, in addition to being a cool girlfriend, I have some working knowledge of this vice that I will never ever have! End result: I was sent off with a pretty box filled with not-cheap cigars (I have no idea how this place compares with other cigar shops in the city, price-wise, but I will say that fancy cigars are a bargain compared to high-end wine and whiskey), matches, and a free humidor so that I(/time) wouldn't ruin said not-cheap cigars. The employee's (owner's? I don't know his stake in the company) patience with my total ignorance is reason enough to give 5 stars, but also they have an entire room stuffed with cigars, so they're bound to have what you're looking for. read more

I don't smoke. But I have friends who love cigars. When they come to town I usually head to my corner cigar shop near my house where I can ask all sorts of stupid questions about which cigars I should get. "This one has hints of black cherry and hibiscus" Are you freaking kidding me? They all smell exactly the same! Ok, maybe a trained cigar connoisseur can tell the difference and pick up on those subtle flavors and I will just nod my head in silent agreement. I won't blow anyone's cover but I did walk in asking if they had cigars from a certain island in the Caribbean that might be 90 miles from the US. And I will not tell you what their answer was. But I will tell you this, according to them this tiny island which is famous for it's cigars really do not produce better smokes than any of the other guys. Honduras makes a cigar just as good and there are lots from the Dominican that are even better. Who would have thought? Used my lunch today to scout a new pipe for my collection, and possible groomsman presents for my wedding. The staff was excellent, letting be browse their merchandise for a bit before asking if they could help. This wait time is really what sets the good/average cigar and pipe stores apart from the ones I would go back to time and time again. I want to look around without being bothered, smelling the wonderful smell of tobacco. In terms of merchandise, all of it was of excellent quality, and they had a wide range of styles and price ranges to choose from. The staff wasn't pushy or salesy, as I am sure they know there is little worse then being pushed into a pipe purchase only to hate it later. I only took a quick glance at their loose pipe tobacco section, but it was impressive, with what looked like a "create your own blend" section. The actual walk in humidor where they keep the cigars was large and stocked to the gills. I knew my bank account would suffer if I walked in there. I will definitely be back to buy a pipe or 3, and have so far been really impressed with the store and the staff. read more

I'm not a cigar smoker; I never could stand the smell of 'em. I *do*, however, enjoy having a pipe once a week or so (who doesn't like the smell of pipe tobacco?!) and places one can buy decent pipe tobacco are getting pretty scarce in SF. So when I found myself in the FiDi after a board meeting (in a suit), I noticed The Humidor and thought I'd try my luck. Sure enough, just inside the open door and to the right, there were shelves with old square glass jars of different blends, and a nice old balance scale for weighing it out. One thing that there wasn't, was customer service. There was a lanky Asian guy with long hair in his 20s behind the counter, seemingly oblivious to me despite the sounds of me lifting jars and smelling the contents. I'm not expecting a retail therapist, just a greeting to let me know that they've noticed that I've entered their realm and -- crazy as it may sound -- if I should need help, they might actually be able to render it. But nope; nothing. I searched through the 25 or so jars to try to find a blend or two that I'd like to buy. Strangely, most of the jars were less than 50% full and probably ten of them were nearly empty. I chose two different blends from jars that were about half-full and, noticing a sign that said "please ask for help", I approached the "help" and said "I'd like some pipe tobacco, but the sign says to ask for help." "Oh? You want to get some of that tobacco?" was his response. "Uh . . . yes." He went over and proceeded to measure out and fill up the bags with the blends I specified. While he was doing so, I noticed that my hands were filthy with black dust. I then noticed that all of the jars were coated with this dust -- no doubt from the traffic that runs incessantly down Sansome. When I got home, I opened the bags to sample them and discovered that the tobacco was dry; too dry to smoke. It seems that it had probably been in the jars for months (if not years), untouched by customers. So there you have it: indifferent/oblivious clerk, dirty jars, stale product. At $9 for 2 ounces, The Humidor ought to either keep their tobacco fresh or not carry it in bulk. I give them one star for existing and for having some nice old fixtures in their store; otherwise, it was a totally disappointing experience. read more

I show up and there is a handwritten note saying they will be back in 5 min. The guy comes back with McDonalds and it stinks up the place with their fries. I ask if he has Fuentes Añejos and he says "I think we sold out". I look anyways and see everything overpriced (gotta love that SanFran 50% tobacco tax). I got a cheap pipe to smoke the remainder of a nice pre-embargo Cuban I had and ask if I could use a match to light up for outside. While sitting with his back turned to me and chewing he says "no smoking inside". I just wanted to throw a couple old Andrew Dice Clay insults back but I decided not to. I give them one extra star for having a halfway decent selection and actually allowed to sell Davidoff. Otherwise the service blows. Get a stog if you really need it but I suggest you just order something cheaper online. If you want to support communism buy Cuban cigars, don't give in to ridiculous SF taxes. Needed some zippo lighter fluid, stopped in, and for the small can, which typically goes for 2.50-3.50, the guy said $7.60 after tax. Wow! Sort of stunned me, and their big can, normally 5.00-6.00 everywhere else was almost $11.00. Sure, rent is high in the financial district, and this is a fine cigar shop, but seriously? I'll never step foot into this pace again. Sure, they may have made several dollars on this transaction, but they've lost any chance at future transactions. Regular here for the past year. The humidor has an extremely vast selection of fine cigars. I have family members who are big cigar smokers and always come here to get them a gift. Both the owner and the gentleman that works behind the register have always been extremely helpful and attentive - they answer all my questions patiently and always give me great recommendations. Aside from cigars they have a variety of loose tobacco and some cool looking pipes. If you are looking for a nice gift or cigar - I'd definitely recommend the humidor. read more

The person who helped me here had no idea what he was talking about, unfortunately. The selection and decent prices are praise-worthy though. The most important thing this place has is a supply of fresh cigars in a properly functioning humidor room. If you've ever bought cigars at a BevMo, or at some smoke shop, you've likely gotten a dry cigar. Dryness ruins cigars, gives them that bitter taste, and basically ruins the experience unless you're drunk and you don't care. Because I smoke cigars *while* getting drunk, I notice when something tastes like burning newspaper and throw it out. These guys sell some pretty damn well kept cigars, and anyone who's tried a cigar and thought it tasted awful needs to research what they'll like and buy it here. This review is ONLY for cigars: The selection is GREAT! As far as cigar shops in this area, don't waste your time going anywhere else. Plenty of great boutique selections from AVO, Padron, Ashton, and many others. This was the only place I could find that was selling AVO's 2015 classic covers as singles. They also have Padron's 50 year if you want to drop a bill for a single, haha! Man what a beauty. If you have any concerns about the service here, ask for Ben. This man was so helpful and friendly, I wanted to buy him a cigar and chat for a while. The cashier was also great--when I went to grab a Boveda pack he threw one in on the house. Prices are a bit inflated compared to what you would pay online, but you're in SF CA, and everyone is trying to make a living. The service and selection made me feel okay dropping a few extra bucks. This is a cigar store, not a smoke shop. Everything for the serious cigar and pipe tobacco smoker: a surprisingly large space given the downtown location, quiet as a museum and filled floor to ceiling with cigars, cutters, boxes, lighters, pipes, loose tobacco, all very dignified and expensive looking. Sure they have a few flasks, an impressive collection of heavy carved canes that look like Dickensian murder weapons, a few shaving kits, even a stray chess set or two. But unlike comparable stores they don't pander to the other manly arts - no dice or cards, no sunglasses, no manicure sets, golf accessories or pocket knives. read more

The interior is beautiful, and the humidor itself is well arranged and roomy. Nice place if you're into cigars. I've been coming here since you were able to puff inside and prefer it now that you're actually able to read the labels on the boxes without the consistent haze and lingering waft. I'm not really a connoisseur but consider myself more of a cigar aficionado and fan so I do enjoy a good stogy from time to time and this place has a nice selection. The staff is very helpful and quick to pick something out if you've been circling the humidity controlled room that houses the good cigars for too long. The prices are pretty average and there doesn't seem to be any price gouging going on in spite of the prime real estate. Great, classy place and no unexplainable creepy vibe that cigar shops and smoke lounges are known for. read more

Like most things in SF the location is convenient. It's a decent size shop however I would have liked a larger selection of premium brands.

One of the best selections I've seen in the city. As an extra bonus, they were open on Sunday up to 5pm.

I enjoy the odd cigar and will admit that I generally go for the cheaper end of the very dark cigars. At this place the "cheaper end" isn't all that cheap but damn if the cigar you get for your money isn't top notch. Definitely recommend this place if you've got class, and if you're like me and have more thrift than class well, recommend your friends get you gifts there and maybe nip in yourself on a day you're feeling particularly wealthy. read more

This is a very classy cigar store with a great selection of cigars in a well maintained large walk-in humidor. Outside the walk-in are all manner of accessories from desktop humidors, humidification systems, lighters, cigar-related tools, and a few other items (like flasks and shaving kits) commonly found in such "men's stores". It's just about all downtown SF has left of the real thing since Grants was forced out of business in late 2012. Grant's had a smoking lounge which probably made them to un-PC for our evolving nanny state, but this place doesn't and so might actually survive for a while if people patronize it. Prices are a bit steep, but then this is a high-price rent district and the SF tobacco tax is an eye watering 50% so I don't blame the owner. Meanwhile he (Ben) knows his cigars and makes good recommendations. These days I buy most of my cigars on-line at the box level, but I check in to this store every few months to see what's up. Though people like me really only patronize tobacconists for gifts and the like, this store has a great selection of products, all at relatively reasonable prices: The store is managed to have something for everyone who has ever picked up a cigar, for example, and the staff are not pushy and are quite knowledgeable about thier product offerings. The chances are, though, if you smoke any herb, and so forth, that the service for you here will be lousy, and you might not even find what you're asking for - a dedicated tobacconist. Brought the big bosses cigar case here because it was molding and the humidor wasn't as humid as advertised because it stays around the mid 50s. My wife has gone in there (forgetting the names of the smokes I like) & just describes what I like, the kind of humidor I own (3k top of the line Davidoff - I've been to Havana & only the best humidor will kept my precious Cubans) & their recommendations have always been great! For the bad reviews, customer service is a 2 way st., if U take some time & talk with the staff they are very helpful & often work out some great deals! I do this at every fine smoke shop I go to because I don't mess around w/my smokes & I want the best product & service! LOOK AT THE IDIOT REVIEWS! One reviewer blasted the place because he went to buy lighter fluid and he thought it was expensive: my man, next time to go to 7-11. The people who work here are shy but will engage you if you talk to them. And cigars in California carry a 40% to 60% surcharge! so it is not the stores that are overpriced. I noticed the bad reviews have one thing in common: lack of knowledge of cigar culture and shops in California. OK, sad day that the Humidor is moving from a great location this coming week, BUT happy day that they are moving closer to my office to One Embarcadero! (Good luck with the move, guys! Can't wait for opening day!) Stopped in yesterday to grab some weekend cigars (best selection in SF, folks, bar none!) and noticed some great humidors still in the cabinet as they are reducing stock prepping for the move this week. Beautiful Davidoff box left which would look great in my office caught my eye. After some good spirited haggling, Ben made a great deal (for both of us I might add LOL!) and off I went with my new humidor and a couple of boxes of montecristos as a starter batch to fill it! The guys know their products, seem generally interested in building customer relationships, and are pretty decent guys with a good sense of humor.
