I was looking for a place that delivers bakery goods / gift baskets in London and came across The Hummingbird Bakery on Yelp. I live in the U.S. so finding delivery places in other countries can be difficult. First, from what I have been told by those who received the bakery items I had delivered, everything is very fresh and delicious. Their customer service was the best I've come across in a long time (I had a few questions and corresponded via email a few times). Leave it to me to have absolutely no idea that this is an American bakery. Ha! The red velvet is actually pretty good despite what some people have said, although I did feel like the whole atmosphere was a bit on the stiff side. Before starting reviewing I need to give a big bravo to Hummingbird for putting up such a great internet website. That's the key really to sucess, because when you see such yummy cupcakes in HD on your screen, you just want to go straight away to try it out. This Hummingbird Bakery is located on the famous Wardour Street, just beside one Pastry Shop that looks also very appealing from the outside window. The shop is colorful in a pink-mauve color that's make its very perky. Inside it's very small but clean and there's often people waiting in line to get some of these sweets. Some seats near the wall are available but very very tiny space. The cupcakes are normal sized, but for some the frosting is very cute and colorful. I must say that I've found the frosting to be delicious even if it's maybe a little too sweet for me. I think their real power is the fact that they really look mouth watering. What's not to be missed : I think the all time favorite is the Red Velvet, Deep red vanilla cake with a light taste of chocolate, topped with cream cheese frosting. Man is this place heaven on earth :D If you know me then you'll know how much I love cakes. I have tried many places in Birmingham and when I was going to London I wanted to find a place to go get some. Thankfully, a week before my trip my friend had gone to visit family and went to this bakery. I saw pics and her review was really good. So it was the place to go when in Soho. On my way there I saw a queue at a shop and wondered what it was, then I saw the Hummingbird sign. Man is this place popular. It was raining and I was not in mood to queue in rain. So we decided go walk to Chipotle which was further down the road and grab some food and hopefully on way back the line would be gone. Turned out it was a gpod call. On way back there was no line. walked in and got to look around and choose the flavours. They all looked yummy. I ended up getting 4 cupcakes ( 2 red velvet, carrot and vannila) which came down to just over £10. It is pricey but I they tasted delicious. Especially the red velvet ones. Icing was creamy and cake was just right, not too dry. I also liked the carrot one but did not like vanilla. So loses a star for price and that vanilla cupcake. Definitely a novel experience with their huge chocolate peanut butter and red velvet whoopie pies the size of a softball, their selection of cupcakes with classic swirl frosting [flavors such as biscoff and key lime, nutella, oreo, vanilla], chocolate mayonnaise (?) bunt cake, the "mile high" slices of cake such as red velvet, salted caramel chocolate, Brooklyn white out, carrot, raspberry, and of course, the rainbow pride cake with white icing, and sister cupcake with a rainbow fondant on top. They have brownies as well, red velvet seems to be their go-to flavor for every pastry. A little pricey for a cupcake (£3.80) and for a cake slice (£5.60) eat-in. The cake is a bit dry and dense, almost tough like a non-cakey cornbread, but perhaps there is a need for a heartier batter to maintain the sky-high layers of the cakes. Definitely branded well and the inside of the shop is very cute with all the cake displays and neatly maintained case of sweets. I ordered the Red Velvet Cupcake to try out the common favorite and was frankly not 100% amazed. Sure it was a substantial and good cupcake, but in my opinion it was not worth the hype. The frosting was delicious but the cake base itself was a bit on the dry side. I've been here twice now and both times have been delightful. The first time I had the "black bottom" cupcake and the second time the "Brooklyn Blackout". Both cupcakes have (what I deem) the appropriate ratio of frosting to cake. So many places over-frost so the cupcake is crushed under the weight of the frosting. Not the case here. The Brooklyn Blackout had a note that said "with Cream!" which I thought implied there was cream inside, which i was kind of excited about -- like a Hostess Ding-Dong, if you're familiar with those. But instead it was a fudgey dark chocolate icing over a dark chocolate cake. The cake was a tad bit on the dry side, which surprised me for them having just opened. The previous Black Bottom was delicious, as well, from what I recall. Cheesy cheesecake frosting and filling with a chocolate sponge cake. They are a bit pricey, about £2.75-3.15 per cupcake, a bit more if you eat-in. I find them a bit small compared to American cupcakeries. I'm more pro-cake than pro-frosting and while their ratio was good, the overall cupcake was a tad wee for the price. I really, really love that they have had rainbow layer cake both times I've gone in, though I've yet to have a slice. i definitely want to try that someday! read more

Had to come try their Rainbow Cake because, hello! Rainbow Cake! How often do you see that in a bakery? I've only ever seen it online. So props to Hummingbird for having it. One slice cost me about £4.5 but it was a very large slice. The whole thing tasted like eating vanilla ice cream. The frosting was very sweet so be careful if you are sensitive to sugar. The cake was nice and soft but it seemed like it was getting a bit stale. I bought it about an hour before they closed so I would suggest getting a slice earlier in the day when it's more fresh. When I first moved to London, my cousin had moved away, (not avoidance because I was going to be in the city, may I add), and all he could ever say as his opening line each time he saw me, was "have you been to the hummingbird bakery yet?!", and low and behold, one day I had 20 minutes to kill in soho after a rubbish tube trip running work errands. I fancied something sweet, as is often the case with me and headed here. I was immediately drawn to the raspberry cheesecake brownie, and the red velvet cake, which are just amazing, boxed up in a little pretty boxes. I swear that I didn't eat them both at once, but I really could have. The ladies at the counter were all smiles, and much slimmer than I would be if I was confronted with those gorgeous bakes infront of me every day, because frankly, I could live on that cheesecake. Topped with a plump little raspberry bang smack in the centre, the topping was creamy, with tart raspberry cutting through the sweetness, sat on a rich dark chocolate square of brownie. They're a huge portion, they will put you in a happy little food coma if you have too much, which is easy to do- so be warned! read more

This is a quintessential American cupcakery. I tried the red velvet and chocolate bottom. Both were good but I would recommend the chocolate over the red velvet only because I still prefer the red velvet at Sprinkles. (check it out if you're ever in the golden state of California.) When all the world's a hopeless jumble, or I'm just having one of those days, sometimes only a cupcake moment will do. When I feel like that, I head on over to the Hummingbird Bakery on Wardour Street. This little gem is hidden away at the bottom of Wardour Street and from the moment you step into it, you start to smile. The interior is a riot of pink and brown and oddly also features a light brown entry carpet, that slightly jars in terms of the overall look and must be hell to keep clean. Peppered along the wall, above their seating area (six bar stools, which are fiercely thought over, as it is the only available seating) were Warhol lookalike cupcake prints and for some unexplicable reason a massive tv screen with more images of cupcakes on it. Rather a missed opportunity I thought, as they could have used for example clips about the company and its founder, the in-store bakery as well as their cakes and cupcakes receipes being made. Once you snake around in the queue towards the counter, your eyes are meet with Wonka type cakes and loaves in various flavours and colours - I particularly recommend the Devil's Chocolate Cake and the delicious Lemon Loaf. So what about the cupcakes? Well if you're feeling adventurous I'd plum for their daily special. My favourite was Sunday's Chocolate Caramel. If you want a guaranteed favourite, then go for the classic Red Velvet. This was perfection. Just the right texture and depth, it was light and moist and the cream cheese frosing was luscious. I found the basic chocolate and vanilla cupcakes a tad dry, but at £2 they are the cheapest cupcakes on the menu, which rises (as does everything on the menu) if you eat in, in this instance to £2.15. The winning cupcake for me was the Black Bottom. This dark chocolate cheesecake combination was really lovely. Perfectly balanced in favour and large enough to leave you wanting more. If you're getting take-out, look out for a cute Chinese takeout style carton for a single cupcake or depending on how many cupcakes you buy, the distinctive pink and brown Hummingbird packaging in box sizes of 2, 6 or 12. Finally, there's the staff. Excluding their over zealous manager, the girls in the store are fantastic, friendly and knowledgeable about their products. My favourites were Nathaly and Sigita, who couldn't do enough to ensure that both myself and my cupcake companion enjoyed a great customer service experience. read more

Ugh! Ugh ugh ugh! Staying in Soho one weekend, we walked past this bakery, saw the line, and thought, hm, it might be good. They certainly look good, with brightly colored frosting and a fun "cupcake of the day." I was excited when I saw that the next day they would have a Boston Cream cupcake--one of my favorites, and of course as a Bostonian I appreciated the nod, so we made plans to come back the next day. We decided to keep it simple and bought a chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting, but didn't eat it until about an hour later. The store manager is lucky we were no longer in the vicinity, because I probably would have complained. This was, without a doubt, one of the worst cupcakes I've ever put in my mouth. While the cake itself was all right (moist, but tasteless), the frosting was VILE. Upon closer inspection, you could see the granules of sugar and an opaqueness that indicated a high water content in the frosting. It was like shoving a spoonful of raw sugar in my mouth. I don't know how you manage to bleed the flavor out like that and leave revolting sweetness in its wake, but they did it. Needless to say, we didn't bother to go back for the Boston Cream. I use to love these guys before when they first opened their shop in notting hill. It was my one go to place, but as it was a bit out of reach, I lived in their soho branch on most weeks. Their red velvet was a staple, the sponge was just so moist and the cream cheese frosting melted in my mouth. Their bubblegum cake was so good as well........ until the last sponge was so dry, it made me think twice about ever returning back. Now I never go, they are so hyped up, and their sponge is just dry for me. As a cupcake baker and fan, I've heard a lot about Hummingbird over the past few years but had never gotten around to trying them until this trip to London. My daughter and I visited the Wardour Street boutique and tried 4 different cupcakes in total. While small, I loved the presentation of the shop -- there was quite a big assortment of cakes, loaves, whoopie pies and cupcakes (both regular and gluten-free, what is billed as "Without"). The gal who waited on us was just adorable and since there was no room at their limited seating area, she made space for us to eat at the counter. What we tried: chocolate/chocolate (liked this the least; cake was not very chocolatey, a bit dry, and frosting was a bit on the thick side), vanilla/vanilla (good but again not flavorful enough), red velvet (frosting was delicious; cake was a bit off in terms of being billed as a red velvet - it certainly had the right color but the tangy aspect of a RV was missing. If my eyes were closed, I probably would have said it was a vanilla cake) and carrot cake (my favorite of the bunch - the spice blend was amazing and rich, and again it had that delicious cream cheese frosting). My one gripe for the cupcakes overall was that the addition of a simple fondant cut- out on the cupcake added I believe 50 pence to the bill. Knowing the price of fondant and how easy these are to make, I was a bit surprised. I loved their take-out boxes. Note cupcakes are several pence cheaper when you get them to go (which is what I assume most people do as seating as limited (small bar area with about 6 stools. Also to note, there are no customer bathrooms. Not a big deal for us but might be useful info for someone. Highly Overrated!! Dry cupcakes, but good frosting. If you didn't know it was famous, you would probably mistake this little cake shop as an inconspicuous independent trying to fit in with local soho style. We went for a Birthday piece of cake and I was left embarrassed I had suggested it. They had a small selection of their famous cupcakes on offer and just a few of their large cakes and other concoctions. I was after a red velvet cupcake, as I recently returned from the US and miss all things American. I was very disappointed. The cupcake itself was dry and flavorless (not that they are ever highly flavored). Edible, but not the treat it was intended to be. I must say the cream cheese frosting was perfect! Light and sweet but not sickly. Presentation is good here and mine was no exception, but I'm a believer that cakes should be as yummy as they are pretty and shouldn't require a glass of water to combat the dryness. The coffee was great (and I'm picky about my coffee) - Illy I think and the staff couldn't have been nicer. This branch is small with just a few red velvet barstools to compliment their cakes. Not a place to hang out for long, but we found seats for three with no problem. Red Velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. That is all I really need to say. Seriously, though, I am super duper glad that they've moved into the neighbourhood. We usually receive at least one box of cakes per week from clients and agencies, and the red velvet ones are always the first to go. The store itself is a shiny, colourful place filled with tidy rows of gorgeous little cupcakes. The variety is vast, from fluorescent-pink, sugar-butterfly -adorned sparkly cakes to some killer looking savoury cheese and courgette muffins. No matter how rushed I am when I visit Hummingbird, I always spend a few moments admiring the selection of coloured frosting and edible glitter. Not only do they look impressive, but they taste GREAT. I can't handle more than a half a cake at a time because they are so dang sweet, but that half cake is simply divine. If you, like me, can't justify spending £2 on a single cupcake, there are ladies standing on Argyll Street most mornings handing out vouchers for free mini-cupcakes. They're only redeemable certain days, but this is an excellent way to avoid spending too much money and keep the sugar rush to a minimum. read more

I'm writing this before lunch, which seems like a stunningly awful idea. It's currently sunny outside and I work ~20 minutes walking distance from here, so now that I thought of reviewing this, I'm highly tempted to ditch the review and go pick up a cupcake instead. I have a huge sweet tooth, but it's a very picky one. So when my parents had a cake delivered to me for my birthday from Hummingbird, I was initially somewhat wary. After all, they're in the US, so I (rightly) assumed they just went with the first bakery that had online delivery available. Then I ate the cake. I don't even really like cake. In most cases, I find it dry and much less interesting than other desserts (read: chocolate). I'm that person that asks for just a teeny-tiny slice of the birthday cake: not because I'm trying to watch my sweets intake, but because I'm really only eating it to be polite. This cake was oh-so-different. It was moist and rich and flavorful, and the frosting was creamy without that overwhelming-pure-sugar flavor. I was very sad when the cake was gone. With this joyous memory, I went here to pick up cupcakes for a friend's dinner party a month or two later. Everyone loved loved loved them; at the end, my friend even said "usually I'd offer to let you take some of the leftovers home...but in this case, I'm going to keep these as your housewarming gift to me." So why only 4 stars? Because the bill on that cupcake order was bad. These are ~£2-3 per cupcake (more for the fancier ones), and to my unfortunate surprise, there's no discount for bulk orders. All-in-all, definitely an amazing treat, but I'd advise against a bulk order. read more

The last place I'd expect to experience insufferable customer service would be a bakery. I arrived, friend in tow, to pick up a heavy cake during our late lunch. The shop was empty. When I asked for the cake, the woman requested my email confirmation. When I nicely told her that I was sorry, I didn't print it (BECAUSE no where on the email did it say I would need to), she became very agitated. She then asked for the card I paid with and huffed and puffed to get my cake. After spending 40 quid on a mother effing box of sugar and butter, the least this lady could do is SMILE. In a way, I'm glad I don't live closer to Hummingbird Bakery because I would probably be ten times larger from visiting every day! The cupcakes are always good, but it was the rainbow birthday cake I had on a recent visit that was particularly excellent. I first spotted the Hummingbird Bakery when I went to Notting Hill a few months ago, and couldn't stop thinking about the raspberry cheesecake and brownie ! Three of my favorite things finally reunited in one pretty looking cake ? It had to be a sign ! So when I came across the Hummingbird Bakery in Soho, looking for a dessert, I obviously had to try it. And I wasn't disappointed ! The cheesecake is creamy and fruity (even if I would have love to have more raspberries in it) and the brownie is heavy with chocolate : heaven ! Just be careful, as the brownie is harder to cut with a fork. The Hummingbird Bakery is a great spot for delicious cake, even if it's more expensive than in a regular bakery. Just remember to go there for special occasions only (and it will be better for a healthy diet) ;) read more

I can only speak for the Rainbow Cake, but I loved this bakery! Since returning to London from NYC, I needed something to fill my Sprinkles void and I think Hummingbird Bakery could be it! I struggled to choose what to walk away with as everything looked so delicious. I finally settled on the Rainbow Cake, as it was huge and an added bonus- very Instagram friendly!! The cake and frosting was so good and it was literally a meal in itself. After 6 layers of cake, I skipped my dinner. I was too greedy to eat it in two sittings, I'm ashamed to say. I can't wait to go back and try their cupcakes and brownies. The girls in the bakery were also really friendly (and patient) in helping me chose my cake. read more
