It has a lot of potential to be a really cute Village wine bar, but something is missing I've thought every time I've been there. It's small but not intimate. It features a number of wines but nothing very unique. The lightening is off; it needs to be dimmer. Oddly, the EV doesn't have that many wine bars, so I guess this fits the bill if you're looking for one, but it feels a little dingy and could be revamped by management to make this a truly awesome place. read more

Intimate and cozy this bar is quiet and feels hidden. Great for a date or hanging out with a small close group. Beer selection is sweet (I ordered fall summit peak organic and 3 philosophers) and of course since it's a wine bar there is a nice selection of wine. This place is PHENOMENAL! It's the perfect combination of cute, hip, romantic and cozy. It seems to be split up into two sides, which was such a great idea. One side was a little more lively, but the other was great for quiet conversation. The wine selection was made very simple: one red, one white, and one rose, and all of them were super high quality, with very generous pours (seemed like 2 glasses worth in one glass) and only $10. The bartender with the curled mustache is one of the most personable, likeable, and coversational people you'll be lucky enough to meet in this city. Can't wait for my next visit. read more

Tiny wine bar. Very ideal option to grab a drink while waiting for a nearby restaurant resy to open up. From the intricate glass chandeliers and marble counter tops to the antique cash register and wooden framed liquor licenses, the entire establishment just exudes understated elegance. As usual, deal determined destination and we hit this one up because of its Yelp drinks specials. I was especially happy about the $6 cava. The Immigrant did not disappoint, dark and cozy as a wine bar should be. Tables appeared to be for those with reservations only, but a friendly fellow patron gave up his seat so my friend and I could sit together at the bar. I enjoyed my cava, and regaled my friend with tales of drinking cava and eating jamon iberico for breakfast in Barcelona (whether he wanted to hear it or not). I came on a Saturday night with my fiance, and it was not crowded at all. There aren't many places to sit (we had to stand for a bit, but we didn't mind). It was a laid back, very low-key spot. Although the decor is plain - it sends the right message. Come here to enjoy company, good wine at great prices (generous with the pour). Had a great date here the other night. My girlfriend and I grabbed two seats at the corner of the bar and shared a bottle of wine. The service was good, and the simple menu had good options (we opted for the bruschetta and cheese plate). A dear friend was visiting me in New York and a group of us went out for what we hoped would be a relaxing evening at a pub or wine bar. We entered The Immigrant, took a seat, and suddenly felt as if we were being judged by the bartender and ultimately that we weren't wanted. This cozy little spot is a gem. Went with a girlfriend to catch up and it was the perfect ambiance. We didn't expect to stay for very long, but two bottles of red wine (the Malbec I believe) and 3 appetizers later and we found ourselves leaving after 3 hours! Great for date night, also! Came here again last night and as even more impressed! Split the olives, meat and cheese plate, and a bottle of pinot noir with my boyfriend and it was absolutely amazing. The Immigrant has to be one of my favorite wine bars in the city. Intimate, classy, not too crowded- it is the perfect place for a date or catching up with a friend. Another plus is there are free olives with check-in on Yelp! My friend and I stayed there for an hour and a half on the Sunday of a 3 day weekend and felt unrushed. It's strange to call yourself a wine bar when your selection is shorter in length than most $$$ and even some $$ restaurants. Bartender was nice and it's a cozy place to catch up with friends or for a drinks date, but I would never choose this place over Terroir just a few streets up. Went here for drinks with friends and ended up loving this little wine bar. It's a tiny space, so better for small groups. They have several wines and beers on tap that you can sample before ordering. The riesling they have on tap at the moment (Red Tail Ridge Winery) is absolutely delicious! The Immigrant is a solid place. It's a place I would recommend male friends take dates to impress them and get cozy. As one friend would say, it's a "3rd or 4th date" spot. The wine selection is something I don't feel qualified to comment on (wine ignorant) but the owners and bartenders are really great and understanding of that. Super helpful & always make sure I have something I enjoy. Get a cheese plate and a bottle of something delicious and crisp and disappear for a while in the intimate, dimly lit bar. The Great American Wine Bar Finding that great American wine bar is a pursuit dudes don't seek out. To us wine bars are like condoms, we avoid them if we can. And the idea of being in one makes us limp knowing that once we get inside; our manhood will shrivel up on the spot. For us, wine bars are too uppity gay, too manufactured deep girly, too Bar Mitzvah party controlled, and way too Euro trashy for our taste. In general, when guys think of bars they think of beer pong, pool tables, darts, wings, ball games on high definition TV's, a scattering of Creedence Clearwater bar ballads, cleavage sprouting bartenders, collecting digits, massive hook up potential, grinding opportunities galore and beer goggles that minimize the view of humpback whales you pick up during last call with your flailing harpoon. Maybe, you've expanded your taste buds and gotten into Gastro Pubs which are good for chesty bartenders but they still attract minimal tail and never offer that rambunctious, imminent aura of slutiness. But where can a guy go to expand his drinking horizons and have some grown up fun with exotic, new ladies when you have no tolerance for hipster craft beer talk or Brooklyn in general? The answer is wine bars my friends and Immigrant in the East Village is a great place to start. Immigrant has a scattering of tables and a comfortable size bar to enjoy an ultra, juicy, dark cherry skinned, cab from the Alexander Valley, CA for a six dollars a pop during happy hour which is a steal Peter Minuit would admire. He bought the Island of New York from the Native American Indians for a forty of Crazy Horse and a pack of Drum tobacco. I had to look up his name so don't feel like an ignorant New Yorker. But you will remain ignorant by not moving past this gay stigma attached to wine bars because wine bars offer the richest, most intimate way to experience a new neighborhood hangout hook up spot in New York without that skanky, desperate aura plastered through it. Why else are you living in city fellas? How many times have you gone to MOMA this year? That's what I thought. On top of future quality hook up opportunties, so much soul enriching, palate peaking, life enhancing wine tastings experiences await you. At Immigrant, the bartenders are friendly and willing to offer samples if you give a semi-sensible preference request that isn't I like whites better than red, sort of thing. Don't forget the food either. I know that cheese and wine is gay yet blue cheese and wings is pretty close in the gayness department knowing how close and sweaty you get over them with your fanatsy buddies. If you can't make that jump into metro-sexual land yet then get the Italian meat platter that comes with a tame tangy cut of Irish Cheddar which is more manly tasting than any wussified brie. These pork Italian cold cuts come with solid, warm bread and a dash of mustard on a wood chopping board that injects a manly dose to the presentation. I felt compelled to carve my initials in it and get in touch with my outdoor woodsman. The Capicola was suburb and made me resent my vegetarian wife for not being Italian but that feeling faded after I swirled around a Malbec from Argentina that didn't taste excessively like blackberries in scorched soil which was a pleasant deviation for a change. The Great American Wine Bar exists at Immigrant. It's inspired me to migrate towards other wine bars in New York City. If I can't live in Manhattan, at least I can experience the best of its neighborhoods this way. Last, I had a very smart, conversation about the Knicks at Immigrant which came as a real shocker which taught me not to judge every wine bar by it's euro-trashy cover. read more

Somewhat afraid of the chaotic bar scene in the East Village, I am most grateful to my fellow Yelpers who brought this gem to my attention. This fabulous spot is devoid of the tumult typical of the area - it is an environment in which one can sit back with a lovely glass of wine/beer and actually converse with one's company, since music features in the background rather than subsuming all discussions in its path. Granted, we went relatively early (around 9 p.m.) and so chaos may ensue in earnest later in the evening, as other reviewers have indicated. The place itself is warm and cozy, with the dim lighting making The Immigrant the perfect setting for a date or a get together with friends (either way, the less that my company has to see of me, the better). With staff who are all incredibly friendly and willing to guide you in your drink selection, I cannot imagine a more hospitable environment in which to pass the time. Following the knowledgeable bartender's recommendation, I was certainly not disappointed and now regret not writing down the name of the "layered" Malbec alternative, though there will certainly be a next time. Whilst the drinks menu is not overly extensive, The Immigrant stocks quality items in which most people will be able to find a worthy candidate for their intoxication needs. I should also note that there is a small selection of cheese and meat platters, almonds, olives etc. from which to choose, should the mood strike you. Conclusion: If you're in the East Village at a reasonable hour and looking for a great low-key setting in which to catch up with a friend or two or venture out on a date, this is certainly a worthy candidate. read more
