Great happy hour opportunities and upscale dining in rural Illinois. A quick jaunt across an empty lot from the Holiday Inn, the restaurant attached to McCormick Event Center is a friendly and relaxed venue to enjoy an upscale meal. Add in my Candlelight rewards points and I'm all in to return! My first visit I chose to dine only on appetizers; they did not disappoint (see pictures). Personally, I would err on the side of the seafood options (which is a strange recommendation for a land locked, midwestern establishment). The SCALLOPS and SHRIMP were the best out of all of 'em! Wine is typically $8 to $10 a glass, and the tender I had delivered a healthy pour. If you're into signature cocktails, your pocketbook will also enjoy the 4-6 p.m. happy hour menu which offers 'em half off. My second visit I went all in on the DUCK BREAST and BRUSCHETTA. The duck was cooked well and served in slices over a seasoned rice medley. I had asked to skip the rice for BRUSSELS SPROUT side (which they brought anyway), but I'm glad I did. Sweet and spicy combination was a welcome pairing with the richness of the duck.

Loved the Industrial!! Our server, Mar'Kelly was fab and the food was great. Loved the scallops and the cocktails especially !!! Will be back

The food was very good and the service was just OK. It is a little bit pricey though.

I was in town for a family reunion so I had to stop in. It was just as good as I remember. Chicken George with Jan's sauce is one of a kind. They offer several other options if you do not want chicken. The restaurant was so clean and the decor was very nice. However, I do wish it was a little brighter light in the restaurant but I guess they get the name Candlelight for a reason. Our waitress was AMAZING! We had a large party and she was so great at attending to all of us. I was so glad I got to stop in during my time in town and Chicken George will be something I dream about until my next visit.

Clean small town bar and restaurant. Very friendly staff and great food. My Philly was tasty and was super impressed with the size of mom's fish sandwich. Better value than other similar places. But I went just the same. This is decor wise, a simple bar. Tables are available, and a separate room is to what I think was the south (left side as you enter). There were slot machines along the wall and the the room to the south. The mens room was nice and clean, and had good water pressure. No bad smells! I ordered lunch. After asking what was good - the menu was pretty extensive and had a bunch of options, I kept remembering the chicken reviews, so I went with the chicken fingers and fries. The Root Beer soft drink server was down for maintenance, so I ended up with a lemonade. The chicken fingers didn't disappoint. They were served fresh from the fryer, and somehow held the heat quite well - better than the usual fast food fare. I agree, the breading was out of this world in terms of lightness - it was very good, and the chicken tasted fresh and good. I found the fries to be good as well. The Cole slaw could have used something more - it was a bit on the bland side. Give yourself some time, take the drive, and try the place out. The server was quite pleasant. Keep in mind, there is a 3% upcharge if you use a credit card, which isn't unusual.

If you think Kelly's Mexican is equivalent to Taco Bell... go to Taco Bell. If you would prefer KFC wings to Kelly's wings... go to KFC. Both instances will leave me in less of a crowd to wait for my delicious Kelly's. Either way, never leave such a disrespectful review for a restaurant that has food clearly above your taste comprehension levels. To equivocate Kellys to fast food says more about you as a critic than it ever will about Kellys. Uncle Lou's dip, Buffalo strips, every quesadilla, the jalapeño-bacon grilled cheese, and every drink they serve at the bar is without fault. Is it slammed sometimes? Yes. Can the incredibly busy waitresses seem a tad frustrated/overwhelmed? Yes, but they work at a busy restaurant and have to deal with A-holes like the reviewers below. Wouldnt you be testy sometimes? If you are stopping through Sterling, Kelly's is there with Candlelight, Angelo's, and Arthurs as the best places to eat in town. I recognize they are operating in a different environment, especially being over two hours away from the competition found in Chicago. In any case, I found myself hungry in Rock Falls, so I stopped in at La Familia. I had the opportunity to try a carnitas taco, an al pastor taco, and a tamale. I also ordered an horchata to drink. The food was a mixed bag, but with some notable high points. The highlight of the meal was the tamale. The exterior was soft and flavorful, and the interior was appropriately meaty with a good, mild flavor. I believe this was my first experience with a tamale, and it was an enjoyable one at that. For the tacos, I appreciated that the proteins, onion, and cilantro were all in balance and that they didn't skimp on the meat. I am a traditionalist and asked for my tacos with just onion and cilantro, rather than their standard of lettuce, tomato, and cheese. While the meat had a mild flavor and wasn't completely bland, it needed something more to stand on its own. To be fair, there is salsa, lime, and two varieties of El Yucateco hot sauce available. However, being the purist I am, it is my belief that food should be able to stand alone without condiments. That said, with these tacos, it felt like something was lacking--perhaps sauce, crema, or pineapple with the al pastor. I'd also like to call out the complimentary chips and salsa offered at the beginning of the meal. I loved that the salsa was served in a little spouted container and that the tortilla chips were clearly homemade. They were a bit unusual, with layers flaking off (not a bad thing, just not often seen in restaurants). I also liked that they had a little bit of salt... far too many places skip that, and how can you skip the salt? My horchata was an absolute delight with great flavor. It was a tad sweet for my taste, but that's more a matter of personal preference than a technical issue. The service was a major highlight. It was very kind, knowledgeable, and attentive. The staff was also quick and efficient. Final Verdict: La Familia is very solid and respectable as a family-run, home-cooking-style restaurant. While to be 100% honest it doesn't hold a candle to some of the things you might find in downtown Chicago, Pilsen, or Cicero, that isn't the expectation. With this in mind, it does its job well. While I'm not going to come all the way back to Rock Falls just to eat here, when I find myself in town, I can't say I would be totally against it.
