While traveling this week stopped at the Family Chef. Had a French Dip sandwich with fries and a side of homemade chili. French dip was wonderful. Fries were great crispy outside and nice mouth feel. Chili was packed with meat and wonderfully tasty. Also had chicken soup which was really a homemade treat. Would eat here again if passing through. Wonderful friendly service too. Don't pass this quaint restraunt. Stop in and have a wonderful lunch. read more

Stopped for breakfast on my way home after short stay in Stockton. Pretty typical of many family owned restaurants in Chicago; counter seats, booths, tables and an endless menu. I had eggs and hash browns; eggs were...well eggs, hash browns were garden variety. My waitress was great; gave me time to checkout the menu but brought my coffee immediately. A better than average cup of joe in great little loaded with ads for local businesses. My order arrived in record time. My waitress checked on me regularly without hovering. As I prepared to leave I asked if they sold the mugs. The owner came over a gave me one. I'll go back next time I'm in the area. read more

We were completely last minute ordering our food for carryout, my fiancé and I both ordered from different parts of the menu. She ordered breakfast, (The French Connection) and I ordered dinner (South of the Border burger and fries). Not only was this the best food we've had in a while everyone that I spoke to entering and leaving the establishment was very generous and kind. Family chef has something for everyone. It is also very reasonably priced. Me and my family go at least 2 times a week. Closed on mondays!!

Don't let the small exterior fool you! This place has some of the best food I've ever tasted. It's family owned and operated, so you know that care goes into every dish. The food here is simply wonderful, and the menu gives you a surprising amount of variety for a diner of its size. The staff is extremely kind and friendly. They're not afraid to start a conversation!
