This place is impressively big once you navigate the stairs or elevator. My friends and I attended an event there this past Friday night, and it was quite enjoyable. The line at the door was long, but it moved efficiently. Despite the hot and humid weather outside, I expected the same miserable conditions inside due to the large crowd. To my surprise, our event was held on the rooftop, and the central air was blasting throughout the facility. That alone earns this place a solid four stars. Now, the bar was a different story. It was crowded and disorganized, and the female bartender seemed to charge whatever she felt like. I ordered three rum punches and a Corona with grenadine, but I changed my mind and canceled the third rum punch before it was made. Nonetheless, I still got charged for it. As a result, I'll need to dispute the amount on my credit card because I didn't have the time or patience to deal with her attitude when I canceled my drink. When you're at the bar, be sure to keep an eye on your order and ask for drink prices upfront. I'm not someone who penny-pinches, but I won't let anyone take advantage of my hard-earned money. When I tell you if you are brown or black and go to New York City and like to dance and be in a grown and sexy environment, where there is no drama nothing but good music and grown folks having a great time, this is your spot! I saw people in there from 25 to 75 and everybody was in there having a great time! The restrooms were clean. The reserve tables were spacious and the service was great. The music was phenomenal. I practically knew almost every song played. It was really a great time! This will be a must stop whenever we're back in New York! If you are a Shadow/ La Maganette fanatic from the 90's it's like a family reunion. My party was greatly accommodated with a decorated table( I was very late in my request) along with a dedicated hostess. The music was off the chain they played every thing to keep you dancing all night( Dj Mr Cee) and there was live music Chante Moore beautiful voice. The crowd the vibe .. We flew in from Miami, Florida, just to celebrate my 29th birthday. My aunt takes everyone to The Inkwell and I had to experience it after everyone raved about how much they enjoyed this place. OMG I stepped off the elevator into a party oasis. My happy dance shoes were activated. Happy hour 2 for 1 was amazing and had me a little litty all night. Music was great and nonstop. The DJ was on point. I've never experienced a venue such as this in Florida. My birthday carrot cake was beautiful and delicious. When the club sang happy birthday to me I felt like the Queen of the ball. The crack wings have me addicted and the cauliflower nuggets hit the spot. The Inkwell crew really showed us a good time. The Inkwell was a cool place to hang out as I went there recently to see Angela Winbush perform. As expected, Angela Winbush ' s performance was phenomenal (she sang hits like " Smile", "I'll Be Good", "Treat You Right", "You Don't Have To Cry" and one of my personal favorite songs "Angel"). She hit those special high notes, she sings so beautifully and looked fabolous! I loved the show and the cocktails during the 2-for-1 Happy Hour until 8pm. The DJ was fantastic and I found myself dancing the whole time (as usual) to great old and new songs. One of the hosts on the stage kept the party going and another host mingled among the crowd and was very courteous. This place was cash only for the tickets so I had to go back outside to the ATM. This venue is also a bit small so one should probably go to the bathroom located downstairs before you move onto the dance floor near the stage for the performance ( as I learned the hard way). There was one "rough around the edges" bouncer that I think really needed a nap and an attitude adjustment. However, I had an enjoyable time and will go back for future performances. read more

On Friday, 9/28/18, I arrived at the Inkwell to celebrate a friend's birthday a little after 9:30pm, paying $10 to enter. To our surprise, an hour later the lights came on and everyone was being asked to leave. When asked why, we were told that the host, "booked a gay party that's starting at 11pm". To take our entrance fee without informing at the four that the party would end at 10:30pm was completely unprofessional. When my friend approached the host, instead of refunding our money he provided comp business cards to he used for a future visit, which did not satisfy us. As a result of this incident, I have no plans on ever visiting the Ink Well again. (There are other reasons why which I've chosen not to share..to be polite.) However, I will end on a positive note by saying the first time I visited to see Angela Winbush when the party was held at 54th street, I had a great time!) Partied at The "Well" Friday and it was great. Music was dope for the 40+ crowd, and the atmosphere was definitely "grown folks." Drinks were a little on the pricey side ($18 for a Hen+Coke), but they drop a "2 for 1" somewhere during the night, so you can make up for it! Lol! I can only say I really don't like the way the owner responds to her customers' negative reviews. These hard working black folks are bringing your club business and lining your pockets. For the life me, I can not understand the defensive and unprofessional response of the owner. If they had been white patrons, I wonder if the owner would have responded differently, js. Therefore,I will not be attending ever with my friends. You won't be treating me or my friends disrespectful when I'm keeping you in business. No way jose. I've been going to the Inkwell for years, first at the smaller location and now at Times Square and there's a reason for that. I love it! The energy of the crowd, the friendliness of the staff and the whole vibe. I have celebrated several birthdays and events at both locations over the years, most recently on Friday June 14th, I had my graduation party there, celebrating my fiance getting his Master's and me getting my Bachelor's. It was amazing! The drinks are Always potent and u can't go wrong with 2 4 1 drinks before 7pm. Also, if u get there before 6:30pm, admission is free. Sometimes there's a line, but it moves quickly. There was No Line at all on June 14th, which was awesome. What can I say about the music? It's always bumping! The DJ's keep u on the dance floor with their mix of Old School R&B, Latin and Caribbean. I love the fact that there's a dress code because it keeps out a certain type of crowd that I'm too old to want to dance with, lol. The crowd is usually a happy mix of 30's-50's+, which is perfect. Grown-folk from a bygone era where men wore slacks and shoes to a nightclub and ladies dressed like ladies. The time frame is also perfect, from 5pm-11pm. Straight after work, and Ur dancing and drinking and having a great time, and around the time ur ready to call it a night, the Inkwell is too! Lol. It's one of my favorite places to party and reward myself after a hard work week. Did I mention the wings? Oh yes, u definitely need to try a couple dozen of their famous "Crack Wings". They're so good, u can never eat just one or 5, lol. The Inkwell is definitely a place to be. What might make it better is a few extra non-reserved tables. Unless u reserve a table, it's pretty impossible to be able to sit down for a break from dancing. But most people are friendly and will allow u to sit for a couple minutes to catch ur breath. All in all, it's totally worth ur time, money and energy. And the price for a reserved table is pretty reasonable, and u get a couple dozen wings and a cake, included. What a wonderful time to celebrate after work. The DJs are on point, they keep you on the dance floor. The space is fantastic. Tasteful decor. Attentive waitstaff. The drink specials, top shelf. Booking the night was easy via phone. They were responsive leading up to the event, as well as afterwards. I should've been born a decade or two earlier, in a time when the people danced, the drinks were affordable and the DJ knew how to keep the crowd engaged. Although, not my particular preference in music, the place was pretty darn good. The bartenders were quick, probably the fastest I've ever seen. The dance floor was moving from the time I walked in until the time I left. And the door service was cool too. People in attendance were so respectful. THE INKWELL MIDTOWN, NYC FREE BEFORE 6:30 pm POLICY SUCKS: My sister wanted to celebrate her birthday (9/19) at the Inkwell (9/20.) We arrived at 6:00 pm and could see the rooftop lounge was open. Parties were going on upstairs but as we got closer there was a very long line to wait on and no one was being let inside because "person that opens up lower level didn't get here yet"...door finally opened at 6:31 pm. We missed free admission and was informed that we all had to pay the $15 cover charge even though we were there before the cutoff time!! I celebrated my birthday there in July and when I arrived at 5:00 pm I had to wait until 5:45-6:00 pm before we were allowed in and was told the same thing "person that opens up didn't get here yet." I HAD A GREAT TIME THOUGH!!! I don't know if this your policy to make up for the financial loss of allowing free entry before 6:30 pm but this should be looked into ASAP!!!
