Let me start by saying, I am from Philadelphia and New Jersey, so I know good Italian Subs, Hoagies or Grinders (toasted). The store does make them correctly, where the meats and cheese are wrapped around the vegetables, so each bite gives you a complete taste unlike Subway and some others, where they put the meats and cheese on the front of the roll making the sandwich look fuller than it actually is. The only problem I have with the Italian Store is, the lack of meat and cheese. If there is a problem with cost, raise the price and don't lower the quantity or quality and then change the photographs. read more

I've done business at both the orginal store off Spout Run and the second store in Westover for more than 40 years. It's still good, although not what it was. Their sandwiches were once the best of their kind in NVA. Now, just OK. The other point is that the two stores seem quite different. My reason for 3 stars vs 4 is the complicated way of ordering at this store. I arrived at 3:30pm, so not a very busy time. The sandwich I wanted had all been taken from the premade basket, so I asked if they could make it for me and they told me I had to order at the counter. They were making a custom sandwich for the woman next to me with no problem. I ordered at the counter and they told me it would be a 30 minute wait for 2 sandwiches...when they made a custom order with no problem for someone else. I found this confusing, especially since they weren't busy and there wasn't a line for custom sandwiches. Seating- they have a covered patio and seats that are in the sun for small and large groups. Although the range and style of pizza spots in the WMA is expanding, this place still stands out as a great NY-style pie and I love that they have an extra large that can feed a family with leftovers for a reasonable price. I also love the great wine finds, which include one of my favorite vermouths (Cocchi), and their premade foods, including pumpkin ravioli. Service can be slow when they are busy, but it's worth it. I wouldn't recommend expresso here if you have high standards of coffee unless you are having it as affogato. Saw this place from social media and decided to give it a try! The space itself is beautiful, with plenty of Italian provisions and wines. Very busy on a Friday evening! My friend and I got the muffuletta and pastrami sub, and the food took about 30 minutes to prepare. We had a tiramisu while waiting, and this was by far my favorite thing - so creamy, and not too sweet! I've had the famous muffuletta from New Orleans, and this one was great was well - not nearly as flavorful though. The pastrami sun was alright, but felt a bit dry. found this little gem/store that sells italian sandwiches, pizzas and goodies. Got great snacks but also ordered two soft roll sandwiches. apparently if you wanted to order a modified sandwich, you need to call ahead --which I didnt know. But if you want the sandwich without any modifications, they pre-prepare them on the same day and you can just grab-and-go. Although it was busy on a weekend, the staff helped me modify my sandwiches even though I didnt call ahead of time. the wait time was about 10-15 minutes and I did some shopping while waiting. Rude staff, I waited to get some dessert and the guy behind the counter kept himself occupied moving boxes around instead of getting my order and he clearly looked at my waiting there then I went to the counter across from him where the cashier was and a lady came to the counter I was at and he gave her service immediately. So I asked the young lady cashier if I could order a dessert but she was on her cellphone texting and she ignored me. I said excuse me but I am trying to order something and explained what happened, she didn't care and then I said I was going to put a review about this and she responded why, I didn't do anything! I said I was ignored by 2 employees and that's not how customer service works. While I very much enjoy and recommend the made-to-order sandwiches even though they've gotten smaller, less filled, and ever more costly, I can no longer recommend their pizzas. Their pizza slices have also gotten smaller in size (while the prices have increased) and the crust has become flat, dense and tasteless. This was one of the places that could satisfy my cravings for a sub. I usually have a good experience here, but my most recent visit was a let down. I expected to walk in and pick up a pre-made large Capri as usual. There were several people waiting near the counter so I assumed it was just a busy Saturday night. It took several workers quite awhile to prepare just the Milano. It took even longer for them to prepare the Capri because one of the workers had to step away for a specialty sub and the other worker was too busy using his cell phone. The Capri has always been my favorite, but this time it was mediocre and lacking flavor. Other than subs, they have a variety of Italian goods inside as well as freshly made pizza. I like to order from the Italian Store because I'll pick up a couple of bottles of wine and dessert while I'm at it. And it's run by local family and kids. I like to support the effort. And the OTS foodstuffs are great. My Dad, who grew up in Italy, appreciates the offerings. But there's always a little dread in the back of my mind, worried that the pizza will be slow or incorrect (or, as on occasion, missed entirely). And now, most recently, the Italian Store won't accept custom orders (for example, 1/2 pepperoni - 1/2 cheese after 5 pm on Fridays). Not terribly customized, I think, having worked in a pizzeria one year while in high school. So for days one can be free and easy-going, 9/10 stars. Enjoy the ambience, the Italian fare, and get a bottle of wine. For other DC-type days, though, where one needs a place to fire on all cylinders, 6/10. The refrigerated cases full of freshly made pasta dishes: Lasagna, Spaghetti/Meatballs, etc. sauces: Alfredo, Marinara & Tomato/Mozzarella Salad. Dried Pastas & Olive Oils. A deli counter offers fresh meats/cheeses & prepares "made to order" sandwiches. Pizza too-saw folks picking up pizzas like a "carry out." Want to sit-eat-Bar styling seating is available along the front window. Additional seating just outside the store located on small outdoor patio. I purchased lasagna & tomato/mozzarella salad. I ordered a latte@the coffee bar. Scored a seat @the window bar & watched the shoppers go by. The latte smooth/creamy-Delicious! I asked about heating instructions as none are listed on the Refrigerated pastas/meals. The Barista gave me instructions for how to heat the Lasagna@home. Delicious Lasagna fresh tasty ingredients. I have to admit this, but my last visit to the Italian Store in Westover was a little less than great. It seems the store is being run by teenagers who don't understand customer service. The busy sub counter seemed too busy to take orders and the pizza counter was staffed by a teen who seemed to be left on their own and was not inclined to even offer to heat the pizza slices in the oven. Hoping the Italian Store can train the younger staff members on good customer service. read more

But since they started taking orders only over the phone, in the last 8 or 10 times I shopped there I've had 3 instances where they didn't come close to making what I ordered. Tonight I asked for everything on my sandwich, with just a little bit of oil/vinegar and extra hot peppers. What I got was no oil/vinegar and no toppings except for a couple of hot peppers. The Italian Store is as great as ever - just want to update to acknowledge how wonderful the Deli counter is. More and more stores are switching to pre-packaged meats. The Italian Store is the only place where you can reliably get deli meats properly sliced to order - which makes a big difference with cold cuts. And unlike other stores, the staff at The Italian Store really know how to use the slicing machine. You can get paper thin brasceola, and sopressata so finely sliced you can see through it. If you are preparing a charcuterie palter, this is the place to get your meats. read more

We bought some pre-cooked meals for a meal later in the week and were restaurant quality!
