To start- the place is spotless and well taken care of. It doesn't have a ton of personality in the decor but I was impressed with how clean and crisp it was. The service was just as impressive. The server was prompt and the Server assistant was really on top of things- frequently changing out plates and refilling our water. I usually don't see server assistants doing that much so I was honestly impressed. The French onion soup was delicious- I'm not sure if I've ever had a French onion soup I didn't like but this was definitely up there on my list. The dip sandwich wasn't my favorite- I'm pretty sure it was listed as a melt which is wasn't, I could be wrong about that though. I will say the crispy onions on it were delicious and by far my favorite part. The shoe string fries were good at first but after a few bites weren't too impressive. We also ordered the spicy Caesar- it completely lacked dressing- I know it was listed correctly but I would've liked more dressing as that's the whole point of a Caesar. Overall the meal was tasty and the service was on point so I'm giving it 5 stars! read more

Headed to James Island at the last minute for some live music and wanted to check out a new dinner spot. It was last minute so there wasn't a lot of reservation time slots open. So we took the chance and walked in. The one downside I would say is the parking. We had to keep driving around multiple times till someone left. We walked in and got seats right away. It was the bar area, which is totally fine, at a table. The waiter was nice but not super helpful. Either way we ordered an appetizer, some drinks and filet mignon. It was delicious and the steaks were cooked perfectly! The sides were also very delicious and some of the best Mac and cheese! I highly recommend checking this place out if you're heading to the James Island area. read more

John was our host, Kathy was our server and Zoe, the chef, came over to see how we enjoyed our dinner. Kathy was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. My wife had the pecan chicken, I had the prime rib and we split the crème brûlée for dessert. They have only been open for about nine months and the future looks good for them. Great spot! Food and service is exceptional! Great addition to James Island! I have been several times now and the food and service is consistent. I have ordered quite a few items off the menu at this point and nothing has disappointed me yet. I have tried the caesar salad, the steak sandwich, prime rib, the dinner rolls, the chicken entree, the burger, and the french onion soup. It was so exciting to try this much anticipated new restaurant! We had dinner with friends last night and all four of us were so impressed with every detail. The design of the restaurant is spacious, elegant yet cozy. The staff were friendly and attentive. The craft cocktail program here is really great as our friends confirmed. I appreciated the alcohol free options especially! The menu has so many delicious options that it's hard to choose. I started with the French onion soup and it was one of the best I've had. I decided to get the chuck and brisket blend cheese burger and I declare it the best in the Charleston area! I got sautéed green beans with it instead of French fries and I loved them. My husband got the prime rib melt and was so happy. He got the Tuscan green salad with it and we both loved this generous and unusual side dish. Our friends got the Maryland crab cake that was deemed delicious and generous as well as the huli huli baby back ribs. The food was delicious. We sat outside and was comfortable with the entire meal. I do wish they had a better wine list as it is a little, disappointing to go, have excellent food and middle of the road wine to pair with it. So excited to have this on James island! It's a step up from classic bar food, but not as "high end" and high priced as downtown restaurants. Inside was beautiful and perfect for our girls night - it's also a great spot for date night or a family night out! They do have some outdoor seating, so I'd assume the patio is dog friendly, but you may want to call to confirm. We ordered two French onion soups - they were different to our surprise - one was light brown and cheesy the other one was very onion heavy and very dark brown to the point that it was too strong to eat - think very thick broth.. that was a strange experience.. Kids burger had only a meatball size patty in it while the kids chicken was bland.. salmon and pasta were good but they could go easier on the chili flakes.. a bit goes a long way when it comes to chili flakes.. My girlfriend and I ate here to celebrate our birthdays. The atmosphere is clean and contemporary all while being casual in nature. We started out with appetizers in the way of the Tuna tartare, French onion soup and a single crab cake. The tartare and the soup were both good but the crab cake was exquisite. We chose to split an entree and got the filet medium rare with the Oscar style add on. Be careful either way with this add on selection as it adds a significant bump in the pricing of the entree. The steak was good but slightly under cooked for our liking. I would get it again but might ask for medium next time and would definitely not add the Oscar style as it was over priced in our opinion. We topped off the meal with the crème brûlée and it was on par with the crab cake! Yummy.... Overall for the Terrace area I would give The James high marks and settle on a 4.25 rating. It's a great place to go locally that compares with some of downtowns restaurants without having to leave the island. We will definitely go back. read more

Had a phenomenal dining experience at The James in Charleston while visiting family. We tried the French onion soup, the tuna tartare, the pecan crusted chicken, the Huli Huli baby back ribs, the prime rib, and the filet mignon. As you can see from the photos, these dishes had impeccable presentation with outstanding flavors to match. Not pictured but also devoured were the macaroni and cheese, asparagus, the pei mussels, and the crème brûlée. The entire experience was incredible and the service was impeccable. The pecan old fashioned was a favorite of the group and the four grace's Pinot noir (as well as the other wines on the menu) really rounded out the meal. I can't recommend this establishment highly enough and will definitely return next time I am in the area. read more

First of all of the James is a very nice restaurant. You're served with real glassware and your food comes on a plate. If your from Charleston you know what I mean. There was a party of five of us, and we all enjoyed our food . I had the prime rib which was excellent . The wedge salad is very good to. One in our party had the French onion soup which looked awesome. I can't wait to go back,I want to try the baby back ribs. So close to a 5 but just a couple things not perfect. What was perfect? My tuna tartare. Nice serving and the chips were fantastic with it and it had just the perfect heat to it. One of the best I have had. The Prime rib sandwich had ample sliced meat and tasted fantastic with not much need for the au jus. The fries were forgettable. Skinny, hard, and not the best. Our server was good but not too hospitable. One at the table got the ribs and a great portion and really tasted good but same fries. With such a nice restaurant I wish they would juj(spelling) up the fries some. Overall a great experience and love that James Island has it. We will be back and sub for the fries(sorry to obsess) . My favorite spot for Lemondrop Martinis is The James. I've only been able to afford the appetizers, but the Tuna Tartare and Artichoke Dip are divine. For me, the location and ambiance do not match the food prices. This is a significant deterrent when making plans with friends. We had reservations at Wild Olive for our anniversary but they randomly closed for the day for a staff event. On a whim we decided to check out the James and the service and food were great. I will 100% be back for the mushroom soup with puff pastry. The only reason I didn't give 5 starts is because I thought the filet was a little pricey but my husband said it was cooked to perfection. If I had to give the James a grade, it would be a "B-"-- but with A+ prices. Ok-- the makeover of the building is lovely, clean and fresh. The server was fine in every way-- prompt, friendly and helpful. Issues come in with menu inconsistencies, overall quality of the food, and the heavy....heavy... prices. I ordered PEI mussels and fries for my main; the menu says the broth is "white wine, cream, garlic, lemon and herbs." However, I was served PEIs in a strange brew of pepper flakes and over-the-top ginger. The broth wasn't bad (nothing that cutting the amount of ginger couldn't help)-- but there wasn't much broth and it was not what I ordered based on the menu. The grilled bread was cold and very hard. It might have been softened had there been some broth in the bottom of the bowl. My dining partner had a similar experience with menu inconsistencies. He ordered the crab cakes. They were supposed to be served with grilled asparagus, but instead he was given "fries." As for the crab cakes, they were fine, but nothing special. Here in Charleston, really excellent crab cakes abound, so when we got the "market price" sticker shock of $46-- we were feeling rather cheated about the missing asparagus. (I mean--$46 for two crab cakes, a ramekin of coleslaw and a handful of fries? No, honey--no.) My partner had two cocktails-- $14 a piece. Ouch. I leave off saying that the Napa salad we ordered to start was generous, although a bit dry-- and suspiciously similar to the coleslaw mixture on the crab cake dish. Will we go back? Yes-- to try a few other things before final judgement. We live on Johns Island and are always happy when a new restaurant comes into the mix, but as a Charleston native, I've been spoiled by access to excellent restaurants all my life-- especially when it comes to seafood. There is room for improvement. Take away: Make sure you're being served what you actually ordered. read more
