From the moment I walked in, the vibe was intimate, beautiful, and the perfect setting for a relaxed Saturday night cap. What made the experience truly special was the bartender. There's no traditional menu, instead, he takes the time to learn what you like and crafts drinks based on your taste. I've never experienced anything like that before. The level of knowledge and creativity behind the bar was incredible. Every drink he made was stunning and tasted even better than it looked. I was honestly so impressed that I couldn't even remember all the ingredients he mentioned because I was too busy being amazed at how good everything was. It was one of those moments where you realize there are real levels to this craft. My husband and I visited Last Saint for cocktails before a group dinner when we were in Charleston last weekend, and it was the perfect place for drinks before a dinner. (On occasion, I rant about how we need more cocktail bars and wine bars that don't serve food at all or just snacks like nuts - don't get me started.) Last Saint is a really cool dual concept cocktail bar. The front of Last Saint is more casual - small, cozy, allows walk-ins. But you can also make reservations (or try to get lucky walking in) at the Annex. The Annex is their weekends-only cocktail experience in the back of Last Saint. You walk to the back of the bar and press ring the bell by the yellow door. Someone answers and seats at one of six seats at the bar and three small (but private) tables. The Annex is a no-menu experience. The friendly and creative staff ask you questions about your preferences for drinks and then make you something that fits the bill. It was personal and fun, and we enjoyed all the drinks we had. A reservation at the Annex is good for a 1.5 hour time frame, which was perfect for us to have two drinks before closing out and heading to our dinner reservation. We sat at the bar, which I loved, because we got to chat with the staff and watch them make our and others' drinks while we enjoyed our creative cocktails. The staff have a wide knowledge of cocktails and an almost endless supply of ingredients to choose from when making your drinks. A truly fun experience. One I haven't had in any other city. We enjoy coming here for the cocktails, usually before we head to dinner nearby. There is a speakeasy in the back which we enjoyed on our first visit. The server gets to know you, asking questions about your likes and dislikes and then returns with cocktails built on your replies. It was a fun first time, and the dark vibe made it even more fun. We returned recently to have cocktails up front, and the early afternoon time we found it empty inside. All the better for us. Last Saint is a small, low lit bar located off of meeting street. Parking is available around back in a lot or on the street. This is a small venue that make excellent cocktails at a reasonable price and an aesthetic that makes you feel cool and welcomed. Not pictured is the Annex bar at the back. This is a speakeasy that you must make reservations for. Overall, I love coming here. I only make it out every few months but the service is always great, I love the atmosphere, and the drinks are delicious. I had a dirty gin martini that is top 5 in Charleston. Came for 'Annex' speakeasy hidden in the back. The concept is fun. There's no menu and the bartender asks you a few questions to get a feel for your vibe, then customizes your drink. Sounds cool, right?! Unfortunately, after the waitress guessed my drink (by name) when I started talking about it, and then I saw menu cards with drink names presented to the bartender, and watched several of the exact same 3 drinks made and sent out, it quickly became apparent that the actual drink variety is very limited, and the questions are merely a guide to the most general of menus. Seated at the bar it also became apparent that although the shelved selection seems fun and interesting, most ingredients come up from underneath with generic products like 'Beefeater' gin making up the largest part of their cocktails. Located just a little off the people heavy King Street Last Saint had a front room which is very grandma-chic, like a bar met an antique store and had a kid, and a back room, the Annex, which is mellow, intimate, and delightful. The difference is that the front bar has a fixed menu of delightful cocktails and the Annex doesn't believe in menus. They need no menus because they are awesome. Both visits I had a great time. The Last Saint offers amazing, inventive cocktails while acknowledging the classics with all the hospitality I enjoy in Charleston. I was shocked to find that I was remembered from my first trip. We've been here a couple of times, and they usually change up the menus, however they do have their staples. This time, we ordered the Family Crest, which is their signature old fashioned, the Pinwheel, and the Old Salt. All were perfectly crafted and looked beautiful. We had several others with us, and all the cocktails were to die for. We even had someone with us who wasn't super into cocktails, and the server took the time to ask about what she liked and he was super knowledgeable and accommodating. The space itself is on the smaller side and has about 8 bar seats and several tables. We were able to pull some together for our group of 5 without a problem. I had read that Last Saint was a recent hot spot in Charleston and one of the city's best cocktail lounges. The bar was open every day between 5 pm and 2 am, so we knew we would be able to squeeze in a drink at some point during our stay. We were able to get there on a weekday evening shortly after they opened for the day, and we discovered that those rave reviews were correct. We entered the dimly lit, seductive lounge and grabbed seats at the bar. Besides one other man, we had the bar and friendly bartenders all to ourselves. I started by ordering the Ginger # 3, a fiery blend of Ojo de Tigre Mezcal, raw ginger, fresh pineapple, fresh lime, and cayenne. The drink really packed a kick. After I finished that beverage, the bartender offered to make me something custom based on my preferences. He stated that the bar was actually known for doing that sort of improv. So, I indulged him and received a drink that was similar to the first one, but was lighter and sweeter, containing more pineapple, some soda water, and less spice. The bar also offered a hidden, more exclusive speakeasy on weekends that I would love to visit one a future trip. Last Saint for sure lived up to the hype. read more

Interior wise its is very cute, trendy and cozy. There is bar seating as well as some small tables. The speakeasy is in the back. Apparently they take reservations for that? However, they absolutely blast the music. It's small inside so there is truly no need to be that loud. Theres no dance floor etc. it was odd. I loved the look of the menu, the drinks are sketched out and are super unique. I had a really bad experience with our bartender. She was curt, unfriendly and just not welcoming. I ordered a First Name Basis. She made a completely different drink. She set it in front, I knew but didnt want to be rude. So I asked oh is this First Name Basis. Without hesitation she was like ya. My friend asked to try it and I said well this is chocolatey. I knew it was a different drink I was thinking about. THATS when she was like oh no thats this drink. I have something in my eye.... Either way both drinks were too strong and disliked both. She also made my friends their dirty martinis, one with gin and one with vodka. Do not be afraid to tell the bartenders what you like and have them make you a drink - I promise they don't disappoint. Removed from the tourist traps ( a good thing) this place offers quality cocktails with friendly service. They have a number of house menu cocktails but can also shake or stir any of the classics. You also should ask about the bartenders choice for the evening. on our visit we both had a twist on an old fashioned (cannot recall the name) that was very savory and had a very slight butterscotch flavor to it.. quite excellent. i understand that on the weekends they have an annex bar that is a different vibe from the front bar that is accessible by reservation which we have not tried but frankly I am happy with the front bar. read more
