This is my second time at Proof and 1st time ordering the elephants keeper. The drink itself takes about 20 minutes to be ready to serve. So while waiting you get an MGD pony to pass the time. I came in on a slow weeknight and sat at the bar. First impressions was that it was a bit divey - low lit, wood plank walls, a bar stocked, with a drop ceiling to boot. Our bartender was a gruff looking man who greeted us with a nod. First impressions aside, it was a great experience. Our bartender could make a fantastic cocktail! He never paused or questioned, he knew his stuff. Every drink was very well balanced, smooth as silk, tasty as honey. I could have sat at that bar rail and drank the night away. Cool, small bar on King St. We stopped by during their late night hours and ordered 2 drinks from their specialty cocktails, and the bartender made me a Paloma. My friend ordered "My Elephant's Keeper" from the menu, was told it takes 10 minutes to make, and it did. Interesting concoction. The staff was very polite. read more

From the outside, we were hesitant to walk in (even though we had a recommendation to stop in) as it appeared cramped and a little divey (which we weren't looking for that kinda vibe that night). Thank god we did as it was some of the best cocktails we have had for quite some time. Loved that the bouncer was also our server. Super helpful staff, great bartenders. A must try is the "Knuckleball. Served with pickled boiled peanuts and a spicy Coca Cola reduction, it was amazing. I had two before my liver decided it was enough. This occurred last night, December 20 at approximately 10:30pm. I paid $20 cash for a $15 tab and received $2 in change, with no explanation for the remaining $3. I was also refused service without explanation while others in my party were served. This happened at the bar area where the $5 shots were being served. read more

DO NOT VISIT THIS ESTABLISHMENT!!!! I would give this company a negative star rating, if possible. My husband and I visited last Winter. We gave our credit card to start a tab but when it was time to pay, the male bartender asked if we would pay cash. He hand wrote our total on a "order" pad which was for $80 which we paid AND tipped well. It was not itemized however the $5.00 shots seemed correct. Shortly after we returned from our roadtrip we noticed they charged our credit card $224. So we paid in cash AND were charged an absorbent amount. First and foremost my husband I could not have drank that many shot at $5.00 a piece. I tried to dispute with my credit card company but because we didn't have an actual receipt, the dispute was denied. SHAME ON YOU LSU Proof. I hope others have not been scammed. read more

Good place for cocktails that's further down king street. The menu has an extensive list of different cocktails. Got the Charleston buck and pink rabbit. Both were alright and not quite what I expected. The Charleston buck seemed too light and the pink rabbit felt like a smoothie and as though there was too much egg white. I can't even begin to explain how much I love this bar. I've never had a drink I didn't like here but my favorites are the sazerac... so simple but nails perfection here, and the knuckleball... wildly creative and unique with a pickled peanut snack at the end. Speaking of snacks, they've got small food items on the menu. I don't know how they do it but their boiled peanuts are the best I've had to date and perfect for sharing over a cocktail or two. If you're looking for a heartier dish, come on Fri or Sat night when Two Nixons takes over the tiny kitchen with Ramen... this is ending soon so your mileage may vary but I highly suggest you make it in for a bowl. The folks behind the bar are the coolest mofos in town. They play the best music, and you'll never be elbow-to-elbow with Chad trying to order shots because they only allow enough people in the bar to sit down and be comfortable. First round: Martinez, old fashioned Second round: French 75, clover club The Martinez is served with amazing cheese I can't remember the name but it's perfect even better than an olive I mean welcome to the 20's y'all. Old fashioned strong and sturdy. French 75 is my go to. I can't go somewhere and not order. It was perfect very lemony and the champs was just right to give it that fizzle. The clover club was by favorite drink. If you're put off by fruity, don't be with this. It's not overpowering. We were going to a different establishment a few blocks further away but when I walked by proof I just knew it was my vibe from the get. It's sophisticated and classy. The playlist is on point. Best cocktail bar in Charleston, hands down. Came here all three nights on our last trip to town. Small setting, not packed in like sardines though because they only let you in if there's an open seat. It's pretty dark inside. I really enjoyed the playlist, especially what one of the bartenders referred to as the "emo Sunday" mix. There's usually 2 guys running around making sure everyone is taken care of and two guys crafting some amazing cocktails behind the bar. The menu is great because it's all sorted by the main spirit in the drink, so all your gin drinks are near each other, all your rum drinks, etc. Each drink is more inventive than the last, just check out the menu I posted from my visit. I spent three nights here with two other people, everyone trying each other's drinks, so I tried somewhere around 12 drinks and there was maybe one I wouldn't order again, just due to my own personal preferences. I tried really hard not to order the same thing twice, but couldn't help myself with getting the Oui Chef again after having it about 2 years earlier and loving it. You'll see a very sweet looking drink in my pictures with strawberry and mint on top, but that one actually had little sweetness at all and was very forward with some Mexican spices if I remember correctly. Everything is so inventive and well executed. These guys take their cocktails seriously. Best part of all, in a day and age when cocktails in a city like Charleston start at $15 a piece, Proof's average drink is $12-13. I know I dropped $20 a piece for drinks at the Citrus Club just before coming here. This won't hurt the wallet nearly as much. I can't say enough good things. Get to proof and try something fun or even their version of your favorite classic. read more

This is a bar, mostly cocktails but also wine, beer etc. Love the vibe, the bartenders know their drinks! We got the El choc which I thought would be chocolate tasting and looking but it has creme de cacao in it ( hence the name). The bathrooms share a sink, funky fun setup in general. Located right on King St in the middle of it all, it's a small place with an intimate bar (so you can converse with the barkeeps) and a handful of tables. My first visit was very casual, for an afternoon drink. The last visit was at night, when everyone was out (standing room only). Both were super fun and the drinks were delicious. There's a big menu, but don't let it intimidate you (also, you have resources right in front of you as I am sure they could easily recommend a drink to you based on your likes and the type of day you've had). Big windows along King Street let in a ton of natural light and also lets you peek in in the evenings to see how crowded (or not) it is. Came here with friends for a quick drink and snack before a show. While the drinks were delicious, the server was abrupt and rude. The lack of food - not even some peanuts or bar mix - is not only a bad idea for a bar serving strong drinks, but also sent us out the door early. We did ask, since they weren't serving any food, if we could bring something in but were told it's a violation of health rules (which maybe true if they have a food license, but they didn't appear to based on the above). As local residents, we will never set foot in Proof again and will advise all our friends to do the same. I'd give them 0 stars if I could, but I'm willing to concede the required 1 star based on the great drinks. read more

When it comes to delicious craft cocktails and snacks, Proof is one of my favorite places to go in Charleston. The drinks are all made by hand by expert bartenders who are happy to go into detail with you about what you'd like (the menu is super long and can be a bit intimidating if you're unfamiliar with many liqueurs and flavorings). The Pink Rabbit, Proof Gin & Tonic, and Hemingway Daquiri are some of my favorites on the menu. They do a great job of limiting the number of people who can be inside at a time, so you never feel like you have to fight through a crowd to get to the bar for a drink. The boiled peanuts are my favorite bar snack, and pair surprisingly well with a number of different cocktails on the menu. read more

What a great little bar! Especially for us introverts who would rather skip the larger places. They have a very extensive cocktail list with a decent wine and beer selection also. Everyone was so nice and I never ran out of either water or alcohol. I was stuck on the French 75 which was one of the best ones I've ever had. The flavors were so smooth together. I visited specific for the 2Nixons pop up, but I will definitely be back with or without 2Nixons. Oh and if you're an absinthe drinker, they serve it the proper way. I'm personally not a fan of anise, but I thought it was neat to watch the drink be prepared. I heard about this place from a friend and I wanted to try some of their creative cocktails. Immediately the knuckleball caught my eye because it had some of the strangest ingredients and I was curious. I'm not a fan of whiskey so I was kinda worried this decision would bite me in the butt. When I asked for it the waiter asked me 3 times if I was sure because I guess people send it back a lot which only piqued my curiosity more. When it came I knew I couldn't send it back and the main flavor was whiskey. I couldn't really taste the coca cola part of it, which I was kinda sad about, but I loved the pickled peanuts. It tasted like a pickleback but extra extra whiskey. I probably would get something different next time and order a pickleback instead. read more

I ended a night of drinking at Proof, although I wish I had started it there instead. Proof was swanky, modern, and inviting. The decor was simple. Dimly lit. Bartenders friendly. ID checker at the door was my age and from New Jersey so that was a weird coincidence. I only ordered a couple beers rather than cocktails since I had already been drinking and didn't want to be a mess, but their cocktails did look quite nice. This is definitely more of a cocktail bar than a beer bar. It's a worthy spot for a drink on King Street, but I'd really recommend going earlier in the night than 1 am.
