We stayed at this historic hotel for a couple of nights and really enjoyed the experience. Beautifully restored over the years, the hotel has a timeless elegance and regal charm that makes you feel like you've stepped back in history. The hotel is also home to an excellent restaurant that serves a fantastic weekend brunch along with a refined upscale dinner menu, making it worth visiting even if you're not staying overnight. We booked a suite, and it was incredibly spacious, with a full kitchen, separate living room, bedroom, dressing area, and a large bathroom. Although the rooms looked a little dated in the photos, they were much nicer in person. Everything was clean and comfortable, the bed was great, and the room temperature stayed perfect throughout our stay. If you enjoy historic hotels, this one is definitely worth experiencing. Absolutely incredible hotel with the loveliest staff both at the reception and at the concierge! The rooms were some of the largest and most charming I had ever experienced. Everything was clean and cozy. I definitely hope to stay here again on my next trip to Richmond. Taking a star away because turning on the lights was as complicated as launching a rocket ship and I'm pretty sure I accidentally asked for Service to come in just because I could not for the life of me figure it out, so once they were on, I stopped messing with anything. This review is for the tea only! The ambiance of the Jefferson Hotel already makes this tea stellar- the mezzanine balcony where it's served is absolutely gorgeous. There are two tea blends that are custom to the hotel, the Jefferson blend and the Richmond blend- we tried the Richmond blend, which was very spice-forward and flavorful. The savory tier was pretty standard- we really liked the cucumber and chicken salad sandwiches, the sweet potato biscuit was a little dry and we didn't love the spinach wrap. The tea breads were our favorite from the sweets! We had a strawberry lemon bread and a chocolate bread, they were a little different from what you usually get at tea. There were also some small patisserie treats, like a chocolate covered strawberry and mixed berry cookie. You could add on seasonal cocktail options- we tried and really liked an old fashioned and a summer mimosa. We did a prepaid Tock reservation, which came out to about $60 per person after tax and gratuity. Came for the afternoon high tea. The special diet choices are many which we really appreciated as one in our party is Lactose intolerant. The tea featured a variety of desserts and finger sandwiches. They were just ok. I felt as if alot of the desserts were store bought. We stayed here the last weekend of July. We did the afternoon tea on Saturday and the Champagne Brunch on Sunday. The tea was delightful and served with a variety of sandwiches and desserts. I highly recommend it if you're there. The Champagne Brunch was okay. We sat on the upper level of the brunch room and our food had cooled quite a bit in needing to walk from the serving floor to our table. There was a wide variety and some items were lacking flavor or overcooked. The hotel is a quick drive to most activities in Richmond. For the most part, staff were kind and attentive. Their attention to detail was exceptional. The only time we had an issue was when our room service tray from Saturday morning wasn't picked up from the hallway until almost 10 pm. I stayed a 3 nights for my birthday and it was a wonderful stay. Everyone was friendly, customer service was A+++. Most importantly, my room was amazing. I chose the Grand Premier Room because I typically prefer a little extra space. It came with a seating area. However, I mostly sat in the bed since it was super comfortable and directly in front of the TV. The bathroom was huge. Definitely one of the better hotel rooms I've experienced. Plus the hotel itself is totally explore worthy. I will definitely return to stay. Also, I highly recommend valet so you don't have to bother with looking for parking. read more

This was probably my fifth time coming to brunch at the Jefferson, and unfortunately it will be my last. I used to hold this place in very high regard, but I've noticed the quality decline each time I've visited, and this experience was by far the worst. My family came the week after Mother's Day to celebrate my mom while my brother was in town. We had a reservation for 1:30 PM and were seated immediately, which was appreciated. However, the experience quickly went downhill from there. The food overall was very disappointing. The sausage looked grey and unappetizing, almost as if it had been steamed, with no color or flavor. By the time we arrived, many of the buffet trays were either empty or nearly empty, and they were not being refilled in a timely manner. We waited about 20 minutes for prime rib to be brought out and approximately 35 minutes before the shrimp station was replenished. Throughout brunch, several patrons -- including myself -- had to repeatedly ask managers and staff when food would be refilled. Ironically, the only station that seemed consistently maintained was the dessert station. Service was also disappointing. Our waiter frequently disappeared, which was frustrating considering there is a mandatory 20% gratuity added even though guests are largely serving themselves. At the very least, we expected timely drink refills and dirty plates to be cleared from the table. Honestly, the omelet station was the only satisfying part of the meal, making this one of the most expensive omelets I've ever had. My entire family left disappointed, especially given the reputation and pricing associated with the Jefferson. read more

I had a very disappointing experience here. My friends and I came dressed nicely and were simply trying to take photos, just like many other people there that day. There were multiple groups coming in wearing dresses and prom attire, and I even saw a family in front of us taking what looked like prom photos without anyone bothering them. However, the security guard walked straight up to me and my friends, the only people of color there at the time, and immediately told us we could not take photos or be there. What made the situation even more upsetting was that he had no idea whether we were with one of the groups already there. I was dressed in a beautiful dress just like everyone else, yet we were singled out while others were allowed in without any issue. The guard claimed his manager or boss told him we could not be there, but it was hard not to notice the difference in how we were treated compared to everyone else around us. The experience felt unfair, uncomfortable, and honestly discriminatory. I left feeling embarrassed and unwelcome, and that is not something anyone should experience when simply trying to enjoy a special moment with friends. read more

Yeah at $62 per person with fees it's expensive but it's a treat and you could count on decent food. This time wasn't the case. My friend got the vegetarian option and I did the regular service. Shamefully The Jefferson included a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for the vegetarian option. Come on! Be more creative! That is just downright embarrassing for The Jefferson. I got the standard service and it was fine. The ham sandwich had a whisper of ham on it. Portions were way off. After this experience I think I'll try some different places to have tea. I wish I hadn't waited so long! The tea was absolutely delicious (I had the Richmond blended and it tasted like Christmas in a cup) and our carafes were always full. We had so much food and so many varieties, it was hard to figure out where to start (our favorites were the chicken salad sandwich, the Oreo scones and the lemon cups). Our server was diligent and also hilarious. There's something so relaxing about enjoying tea with good company overlooking a beautiful rotunda. Afterwards, I took my guests to the little "museum" area so they could read the history. I'll definitely be back to enjoy tea again...I imagine tea during the holidays is absolutely spectacular. read more

Finally made it to The Jefferson for Sunday brunch and it was delicious. Breakfast side favorites: potatoes, biscuits and sausage gravy, and I loved my made to order blueberry pancake. Lunch side favorites: the ribeye (well done piece) was so tender and flavorful and I enjoyed the potato and leek soup. Dessert favorites were the carrot cake and red velvet cake; making them mini was the perfect idea! Our sever Jaden described the different stations for us and recommended his favorite dishes. Had afternoon tea here with a large group of ladies from The Center at Belvedere in Charlottesville. I have to say that I was very disappointed. The quality seems to have decreased. The cucumber sandwiches were on brown bread??? The chicken salad sandwiches were bland and boring and were served on regular thick white bread. The desserts also lacked sparkle. The best were the tiny chocolate mousse tart, and the tiny rectangular fruit tart. The macrons were delicious and probably the best thing about the tea. However, the rectangular fruit tart did not have an expected glaze of apricot jam as is traditional. There were two cakes. One was chocolate, which was very fudgy and moist however, it really could have used a pinch of salt to bring its profile up to delicious. The other cake was a slice of either apple or banana??? Flavor so faint I couldn't tell. Neither of those desserts had frosting so can they really be called cake? There was a sugar cookie but I gave it to My friend so I can't speak to how it was. There was this little chocolate thing that was difficult to ascertain what it was supposed to be. I think it was supposed to represent hot chocolate with peppermint and marshmallows, but despite the peppermint and the tiny marshmallows, it was lackluster. The entire experience could have improved with printed menus with descriptions of what we had. There were two teas offered, the Jefferson and the Richmond blend. I had the Richmond blend. It was so splendid that I ordered some from their supplier. Overall, I was terribly disappointed. The beautiful venue had a slight effect on improving the overall experience. read more

Bread pudding was my absolute favorite and was tucked away at the dessert station so I also missed it! They even do a Royal Tea for little ones. We liked the security of needing a room keep to access the non-public floors. Our room was large and well appointed. It was incredibly clean and harkened back to an earlier time which we loved. The tea itself was quite delicious, their blends made non-tea drinkers at the table enjoy tea. Their service is always notable, with them quietly fluttering around and working on the catered items. Your water and tea are filled almost immediately, and your dirty plate is whisked away a few minutes after you finish eating.
