I ordered a family meal from The Jerk Shack and wanted to explain how it works for anyone who prefers to know the flow ahead of time. You order at the counter first, then find a table and sit down. They bring the food to you when it's ready. Fountain drinks are self serve, so you can refill them as needed. The person at the counter was helpful when we were deciding what to order, which made the process easier. The food came out fairly quickly and everything was hot, fresh and very flavorful. We got the mixed chicken, yams, fries and mac and cheese and all of it was sublime. The chicken stood out the most, well seasoned and cooked just right. The fried plantains and hot rolls are worth adding. Both were very good and complemented the meal well. There was also a man playing trumpet and a DJ, which added a nice background energy. It felt lively without being overwhelming and it made the experience fun for me and the kids. Overall, it was a smooth, predictable setup with great food and a comfortable atmosphere. We came here for Father's Day. We had seen the tv episode a while back and were excited to try it out. We called in advance and they were kind enough to reserve a table for us. We are unfamiliar with this kind of food and found the menu a little confusing to order from - only because we had a large group and there were so many options for every entree. Also you have to order at the cashier so trying to remember everyone's order was tough! We enjoyed trying something new but overall we didn't love it, again it's out of our normal you may love it. After nearly three years of hearing the hype around Jerk Shack, I finally made it in during our 4th of July week trip. It was worth the wait. The jerk chicken is the star of the show. Perfectly seasoned, packed with flavor, and cooked exceptionally well. Every bite reminded me why this place has such a strong reputation. Couldn't tell if it was baked or grilled, I'm leaning towards baked. A special shoutout to Unitas for the excellent customer service. Friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. The sides were a mixed bag. The mac and cheese looked better than it tasted, and the cabbage reminded me of the filling in a Chinese egg roll. But those collard greens? Outstanding. Tender without being mushy, full of flavor, and didn't need a drop of hot sauce. The chicken and greens alone are enough to bring me back. I used to love this place when it first opened up. Finding authentic Jamaican food is hard & the jerk shack was hitting on all cylinders when it first opened. But lately, it feels like they've been slacking. Pros: the food is still good. Jerk chicken is great Most of the sides are great too. Cons: Their portions are way too small for what they charge. Especially the shareable size They have forgotten simple sides like sweet plantains 9/10 times. Unfortunately I don't notice until I get all the way home. Place is hidden just off main highway. The place can get packed real quick since there aren't too many tables and space is small. The menu is basically à la carte! Food was good but nothing out of this world. Lady that took my order was very nice and explained how everything works after telling her I was new. Visited the top-rated Jamaican restaurant 'The Jerk Shack' in San Antonio the other day. The place was featured on Guy Fieri's Triple-D show, and I can see why. The interior's rather busy but it's livened up by the wall collages and interesting art. There's a picture of Stan Lee that comes out of nowhere but...hey, Excelsior! :-) Had their signature plate of jerk chicken, fried chicken, marsala fries and yams with brown sugar. Absolutely delish, the fried chicken was perfectly done and both the yams and fries had a delectable sweetness. Some reviewers on Yelp have complained the jerk seasoning was too spicy-hot. Spicy? Yeah, if you normally eat nothing but ketchup or communion wafers, sure. But it's nothing compared to local Thai or Tex-Mex. This place scores a 5 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. The Jerk Shack is a really solid spot overall. The food was the highlight across the board. The curry shrimp plate was amazing--rich, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The fried chicken definitely lived up to the hype, crispy on the outside and juicy inside. The jerk chicken was also really good, though I was hoping for a bit more heat to really bring that authentic kick. It was just a few things that kept it from being a 5-star experience for me.  It seems that the  service and overall ambiance didn't quite match the quality of the food. The restaurant felt like a fast food type of place. When we arrived, staff were eating and drinking at the counter while we were trying to ask questions and place our order, which made the experience feel a bit unpolished and inattentive. The jerk shack was absolutely delicious! We went with some friends and together we got a little bit of everything so we could try a lot. They have a variety of options but it's not an overwhelming menu. It was our first time having jerk chicken but everything we ordered was seriously so good! The service was great. The employees were nice and the food was pretty quick and definitely fresh. The spot was nicely decorated, lots of natural light and plenty of options to choose from. I got the mixed chicken plate which comes with jerk chicken and fried chicken as well as 2 sides. I chose Mac n cheese and masala fries based on their recommendations and added the coco honey butter rolls. The rolls were soft and pillow-like but maybe a little too greasy from the butter. Mac n cheese was average. The fries though were heavenly and seasoned with the perfect blend of spices. Both types of chicken were good, but I preferred the jerk over the fried chicken. The fried chicken was crispy but didn't stand up to the spices of the jerk chicken. If I'm ever in the area again I'll definitely be back to try their other dishes. read more

My husband and I visited The Jerk Shack today, and everything about our experience was excellent from start to finish. My husband ordered the oxtail plate, and I had the fried chicken plate with mac and cheese, rice with peas as my sides--all absolutely delicious! Every bite was full of flavor and clearly made with love. The chef personally came over to ask how we enjoyed our food, and I told her, "10/10. Highly recommend." She was so kind and offered to let us try the bread with coco honey butter (I cannot recall the name) and the yams--on the house! Let me just say... man oh man, were they good. I'd never had yams before, but theirs were so flavorful and perfectly sweet that I'm officially a fan now. I can't believe it took me this long to try it finally. Food is expensive, but really amazing, so it's worth it. My group of three shared a mixed chicken plate (with grilled and fried chicken) and a curry chicken plate. Everything was hot and delicious. My favorite was the cheesy grits - so tasty! However, they had the Jamaican music going a little loud. This wouldn't have been that big of a problem except they had the TV playing World War Z at about the same volume. So we were trying to enjoy our food while listening to both chill island music and people screaming as they were getting killed by zombies. It was funny for like 5 minutes, but we couldn't really talk to the people we were eating with because of how chaotically loud everything was. I recently tried The Jerk Shack and had a mixed experience. Although it didn't really give me an authentic Jamaican feel, some items were still enjoyable. The chicken was crispy and delicious -- I got the sweet and spicy, but to me it tasted more like a buffalo-style flavor (just my opinion). The fries were actually the highlight for me -- really good, well-seasoned, and flavorful, even though they reminded me more of an Indian-style seasoning than Jamaican. I also did enjoy the coconut bread, which was soft and tasty. The mac and cheese wasn't my favorite, and while I didn't try a large portion of the menu, what I did have just didn't fully capture that Jamaican flavor I was expecting. That said, the space itself is really nice -- the inside is cute, and I especially loved the indoor/outdoor bar area. It's a great vibe overall, just not quite what I expected food-wise. read more

Delicious jerk chicken. Soft, juicy and tender, falls right off the bone. The chicken definitely has a kick to it so if you're sensitive to the spice, I would eat with caution. Busy day at The Jerk Shack--and honestly, I was happy to see I wasn't the only one with a jerk chicken craving. I live across town and made the 32-minute drive because when the craving hits, it hits. I meant to order coco bread and beef patties... and somehow completely forgot. Instead, I went with the chicken curry (served with rice and cabbage) and a three-piece jerk chicken with greens--and wow. It just hits. Deeply seasoned, bold, comforting, and full of flavor. Even after the long drive home, everything was still hot and absolutely delicious, which says a lot. The chicken is so well seasoned--layered, savory, and unmistakably jerk. You can taste the care in every bite. The staff is friendly, the vibes are good, and the food is 100% worth the wait. Next time, I'm starting my meal as soon as I get it and taking the rest home--lesson learned. I'll also definitely remember the coco bread and patties next time (famous last words). My friend & I went there just out of curiosity. It's a little hole in the wall so why not? They have music playing, a chill, laid back sorta joint- I like so far. We checked out the menu and they had a nice selection. I'm very selective & also sensitive not to mention, I don't eat much, so we opt to get a 6 piece fried chicken we'd share, mac & cheese for me- and my friend got the fish with grits, & two other sides. I mix and matched both chicken options and both were great! The *Jerk Chicken was flavorful and juicy. The *Fried Chicken was also very seasoned and crispy. The *Potato Salad was a bit heavy but I liked the *Mac & Cheese. They were very generous with portion sizes and I think the special price is worth it for how much food you get. The chicken has a fantastic smokey flavor, and the chicken itself is super juicy and delicious The rice and peas were solid, I don't think I'd go for the yams again, they tasted like canned yams with a ton of sugar added, way too sweet and a not great flavor overall. I tried some of my friend's masala fries and those were really nicely seasoned. I found myself reaching to their plate for more quite a few times Overall great experience, the subpar side is definitely not enough to dock them given how good the chicken is. I have to say out of all the places I've eaten in San Antonio this is the place I recommend first to anyone. The food really stands out I mean I could eat this every week! I had the mixed chicken plate and the fried green tomatoes and my wife had the shrimp and the sticky chicken. We were amazed the food was so tasty full of flavor and cooked to perfection. I loved the portions and definitely got full. The staff were very friendly and our food came out pretty quickly. In the restaurant you'll find really cool art work and interesting books on the shelves, I love that it is open for customers to check out. My partner found this place my just searching around the area. My dad have been at the hospital for 71 days. I needed something quick and fast. So we decided to try this out. I also didn't like the fact that they make customers pay a mandatory service fee for take out. Seems a bit distasteful.
