We decided to try something different this weekend - African cuisine. Our original plans were for the African Village. But strangely enough, it closed at 6pm on a Saturday. So to Trices we went! Their menu consists of dishes from Ghana, Camaroon, and Ethiopia. A very sweet server came over to help us and made some food recommendations. We tried the pepper soup with goat, coconut rice with chicken and plantains, and some sort of melon "soup" with fish and steamed yam ball. Everything was fresh, hot, and came out timely. The flavors were super-unique and some of them would be considered an acquired taste for sure. We love discovering new cultures through their food, and glad to have experienced Trices. Literally the worse experience, did an online order for my lunch between clients my husband went to pick my order up waited 10 minutes for someone to even talk to him then they tell him the order isn't ready?? I've tried a number of African restaurants around here and none of them tasted as authentic as this one. This is my 2nd time coming and the grilled fish is now my favorite!!! The plantains are actually sweet and delicious. The fish is AMAZING!! It has so much flavor and the perfect amount of seasonings. I will be getting this at least once a week now lol. I've been ordering from this place thru UberEats for over a year. I love everything I've had. On this day, my boyfriend made and froze me some egusi soup to bring home. I decided to thaw and eat some but I had no swallow. Pounded yam is my favorite swallow and of course, I'm not the Nigerian in the relationship, and I haven't made it before, so I decided to stop by Trice's on the way home to pick some up. The place was completely empty so I grabbed a couple pics while I waited. The young lady was very polite and service was quick. It was hard not to leave without Jollof rice (which I usually get with fish). I really love the fish and I usually get an extra order of fish. The Nigerian Jollof is good and not spicy (much to their dismay, I'm sure) but I can't take the heat honestly (thankfully he made the egusi with me in mind). It is a lounge so the ambiance was kind of dark and intimate. I think the vibe is more intimate later in the evening. I like this place. Trices cafe specializes in African cuisine, specifically west African - Ghana, Nigeria, & Cameroon. There is ample parking at this establishment. Once you enter the restaurant you can sit anywhere you'd like. On the right side there is a tv with a small stage and bar area. On the left there's plenty of tables/booths. The service was great from start to finish and the guy offered recommendations and regularly checked on me throughout service. The atmosphere/vibes were really chill. I ordered a meat pie with a side of plantains. The dough on the meat pie was awesome and the protein was flavorful. The plantains were mid. Great consistency/texture but not much flavor. They do customize spice level for your preference depending on if you prefer very spicy food or not. I also ordered the Zaza and it was quite refreshing during dinner. There are some items I was intrigued by and would like to try. The only issue I had with this place is that it's a bit pricey for some items. $20 for tilapia soup is kinda pricey to me but they may have a lot of overhead costs but I don't know. Peace. read more

We have been wanting to try Egusi for a really long time. Unfortunately I looked at reviews on Google and there wasn't any bad reviews for this place. I wish I had looked on yelp instead. We were literally the only people there with one other waiting for what looked like a to go order. The lady at the front kind of nonchalantly waved her hand as to say we could sit wherever so we went and sat down. That was my first red flag. It took her about five minutes before she brought us a menu and then took off before we could say what we wanted to drink. About 10 minutes later, she came back and took our drink order and we were going to go ahead and order at the same time. A guy walked in and she cut me off halfway through talking to go help him and then came back almost 5 minutes later to take the order. During that time, I looked up the reviews on here and that is when I realized how bad it was. I asked for advice on one of the items and she was kind of helpful. But acted as if we were intruding. She went to place the order and never brought us our drinks. Just sat down and started talking to the guy that was at the front and talking to a lady that came from the back that looks like she had been cooking. I looked over a few times and they noticed me, but just clearly ignored us. After about 15 minutes, we got up and I just told her to cancel it and we left. We wanted to go to the African Festival but it hadn't quite got goi by when we got there. We were eager to have some African dishes from local shops, so we headed down the road to Trices. The irony was that they were busy loading up food to take to their stand at the festival. I ordered the Efo Riro with beef. I inquired about the manager's whereabouts, and they told me there wasn't one. When I asked when the manager would next be present, they couldn't provide an answer. Never heard of Trices until my sister asked me to join her for dinner. Located in Leon Valley, Trices is where one can experience African cuisine and they also offer a hookah bar. I had the grilled tilapia with fried plantains. The menu states to allow 30 minutes for proper grilling and that it is worth it. They were not lying, perhaps the best grilled fish I've ever had. The meat melts right off the bones and it is perfectly seasoned. Paired with the plantains this dish was amazing. My sister had the Egusi and fufu. read more

Okay... My son and I had planned on going to another African restaurant in our area, but he did not like the idea of eating with his fingers in public. It isn't that he thought it was gross or anything. He just was a afraid we might do it the wrong way. There are etiquette rules for it that we just didn't know. I have since read up on it, and will be okay trying it out in the future. We decided we could order take out and eat it at home with or without utensils. But, when we went on line to order, none of the things from the main menu that had interested us were listed on the online menu. That's what made us decide on switching to Trices. Let me tell you this... My son and I had absolutely no experience with Nigerian food. The menu items as listed meant nothing to us. We ordered based on the unusual proteins that we like. Therefore we ordered the Jollof Rice with goat meat, as we both like goat meat. It was spicy and delicious, and was actually our favorite of all the things we tried. We also ordered Peppered Kpomo because neither of us had ever tried beef skin, and like to try new things. It was very nicely flavored and the texture was super interesting. We both liked it. We ordered Edikaikong Soup which really wasn't a soup at all. It enticed us with the dried fish and "assorted meats" that were mixed in with the spinach and collard greens. We thought we could see tripe in the picture. Both of use are enamored with tripe. Another dish, which we ordered for similare reasons, was the Oha Soup Special. It was similar to the other one, but had more tripe in it. We ate everything with fufu. I really liked it. It has an interesting flavor and the texture really added to the other food. Now, can I tell your this was wonderful Nigerian food? I can tell you that everything we tried was absolutely delicious. We loved everything we tried. But, having nothing to base it on, I can't judge it for authenticity. I don't think that is really important for my son and me. We just like to try new foods. We need another chance at this place. Each dish is enough for two people, or take home for your next meal.. The last dish that I ordered to go, was life changing!! Ordered the tilapia- now this isn't just a few fillets, it's the whole fish including the head and all! It does take at least 30 minutes so if you are in a rush I wouldn't recommend getting it because you will have to wait for it. First time trying West African food and I was pretty excited. My wife and I really love goat so we paid the extra $6-$7 to have goat as our protein. I don't know if it was because we ordered take out or because they were an hour from closing but the goat was tough. My buddy who's had African food in the past told me how the goat would melt in your mouth. This goat was tough and chewy. Flavor wise the spices were good. I had the Meatpie, Egusi w/ goat and pounded yam. And washed it down with a malt. My experience here was pretty awesome. Both staff members were very friendly and attentive. The food was fantastic. All the seasons and flavors meshed so perfectly. The portions were on point. I damn near cleaned the plate and was super full. Inside the restaurant it was very quiet. It's was earlier in the day during working hours but I can only imagine it getting pretty busy during dinner. If you are in the SA area and you want some cooking that will have you feeling at home.
