In the rare case that a particularly inquisitive traveler gets a wild hair up their ass to actually exit the highway and check Index out on a whim, they generally won't know what you're supposed to do there. The wireless signal's not great, there's a noisy train that comes through a bit too frequently for their tastes, and there are only two places to spend money in the whole darn town. The only apparent thing to do there is look at the river, go into the forest and look at the trees, or walk up to any of the massive walls of sheer granite and look at the stones. No fudge shops, no ice creameries, no beer gardens. No point. Of course, if you're a rock climber those walls of granite are the equivalent of a set of keys to a Ferrari. Index, as most of you know, is the best crag in the world. But it's also a uniquely difficult form of climbing that is hard on the fingers and toes, harder on the brain, and harder still on the ego. So even most climbers stay away from Index. (I know, it doesn't seem like it on a busy summer day... but climbing is growing everywhere in the US, and trust me, other places have much bigger overcrowding issues). I spent five summers in Washington, mostly because of Index. It's not just the stone, truth be told. The forest is like something out of a fairy tale. I've been out to the Olympics--the Hoh rainforest, the quietest place on Earth, yada yada--and it's got nothing on this special valley. The Skykomish is one of the cleanest, prettiest rivers I've ever seen. It also happens to be one of the few rivers in the lower 48 that is entirely undammed-- headwaters to outlet. Salmon spawn on the Skykomish in the fall, mushrooms of all shapes and colors (including many choice edibles) grow throughout the year, Bobcats prowl the woods, Banana slugs pepper the forest floor. It's a lovely place to sit, think, and disconnect from the so-called "real" world for a while. That said, I often found Index to be a less than perfect location for a romantic getaway between myself and my fiance. Don't get me wrong, I love the camping. But a pot of ramen and glass of wine only go so far when the folks in the RV next to you are smoking meth out of what seems to be a lightbulb, and coughing and cursing loudly. Well, the days of dumpster diving my dinners and living in an old plumber's van down by the river are behind me now. I'm a married man (or I was to be, before COVID postponed our wedding by a year). My fiancé and I live in Flagstaff, Arizona-- not a bad place itself, if a little dry for my tastes. Since we didn't get to have our wedding this summer, Megan and I hemmed and hawed for a long time about taking a vacation. We finally decided to come back to Washington (where it all began for us almost a decade ago) on a last minute whim. Of course we would spend part of our trip at Index... but in what capacity? The point of our sojourn was not to climb, but to connect. Romantic candlelit dinners, showers, beds, peaceful mornings drinking coffee by the river. That's what we were looking for. What if Index could be all the things it never was for us? It was that question that brought us to the Wild Sky Ranch. And the answer to that question, to both of our elation, was nothing short of an epiphany. "Maybe we could live here some day," are words I never thought I'd hear Meg say. And yet, there she was saying it. Almost every morning and every evening as we sat in our cozy cabin listening to the river, and watching the moss grow. Maybe it was just the sheer relief of being in humidity again (something sorely lacking in Arizona), but I honestly can't remember the last time I saw Meg looking so relaxed. Hell, I can't remember the last time I felt so relaxed myself. So, this is just a very longwinded shoutout to the Wild Sky Ranch. I can't believe it took me almost ten years to finally book a stay at that lovely place. Just like Index, I'm sure it's not for everyone. But if, based upon what I've said, you feel like it may be for you, I couldn't recommend staying there more. Looking back, it's one of the loveliest vacations Meg and I have ever had together. I'm sure that when we come back to Index, we will spend at least a night or two there again.

The owners were amazingly helpful with all of our requests from start to finish, making sure we had everything we needed right up until the day of the event. The cabins are large and well-stocked with pretty much everything you could need, and the site itself it G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S, with at least 2 or 3 firepits and one overlooking the Skykomish River which is just a stone's throw away. Overall we were really pleased to rent this site and we will definitely be back for any other big events!

The first time I did my tour here, I immediately clicked with Angela ---- she is so down to earth, knows her stuff and open to any and all ideas. The rooms were great (my bridesmaids used the castle) and groomsmen used the cottage. Both great locations and so spacious to get ready in. Nothing felt crowded and everyone could have their own space (we had 10 people total in the bridal party)! Now to talk about the wedding: 1. Highly encourage hiring Angela as the day of coordinator (she was efficient, great communicating with vendors, so talented in decorating for the wedding and one of the things we loved is Angela was great at checking in with everyone during the wedding but also never stepped on any toes. I had many family members comment on how they appreciated her thoughtfulness throughout the day checking in). 2. Parking was great and easy! Plenty of room for everyone. 3. Stay the night! It was great finishing the wedding and just being able to go into the castle and enjoy the night together. The venue is so beautiful and it was nice to stay and take in all the sights. 4. Place was very clean and well stocked with coffee and tea. So many places to take great pictures and incredibly peaceful and quiet. Thank you Angela and we cannot wait to visit again!

​The castle itself is undeniably beautiful and full of potential, but our experience was completely…read moreruined by severe infrastructure failures, host misrepresentations, and invasive privacy violations. ​While the estate, scenery, and medieval decor look incredible in photos and upon arrival, the actual living conditions and host management were unacceptable. ​No Running Water / Severe Well Defect: During our stay, the running water completely shut off, leaving my family without working toilets, showers, or sinks. As we later learned, the entire 18-acre property relies on a low-yield private well that recharges at only 30 gallons per hour. Multi-Listing Overcapacity: Despite having a low-yield well, the host operates 5 separate rental units on-site (the Castle, a Cottage, and 3 vintage campers) plus an on-site caretaker residence, potentially housing 15-20 occupants at once. Providing a maximum total of 720 gallons per day for 15+ people is physically insufficient for basic living, leading to inevitable water outages. ​Undisclosed Audio Recording: Following our report of the water issue, the host admitted in writing to reviewing video playback and listening to private audio recorded of my children on the drawbridge. Neither the listing description nor disclosures stated that devices captured audio: a major privacy breach and a violation of Washington State law. When confronted about the water outage, the host attempted to blame guests, claiming in the chat thread that "the tub takes 300+ gallons per bath." According to EPA and plumbing standards, an indoor 2-person spa tub holds 60 to 80 gallons. Exaggerating water capacity by 300%+ to cover up structural well limitations shows a complete lack of honesty and transparency. After being informed of state privacy rules regarding undisclosed audio recording, the host cut off communication and blocked us, rather than addressing the habitability issues in good faith.The property may look like a fairytale from the outside, but operating 5 separate listings on an inadequate water system, combined with illegal audio recording and retaliatory charges, made this stay stressful and unacceptable. I strongly advise future guests to exercise caution before booking.

Later, alcohol service was stopped altogether because someone got sick and puked. I understand wanting to manage the situation responsibly, but shutting down service for everyone was a major buzzkill. Gorgeous venue with plenty of potential, but the restrictive and inconsistent bar experience took away from the event.

All lights and decorations are fully customizable and we chose to go with white table linens/chairs and blue/purple lights. Vendors were a BREEZE, as she let's you bring anyone so long as they are licensed and insured. But dont stress because Quyen has a list of vendors she has worked with that know the space, we ended up choosing one from that list for food and bar and purchased the beer/wine to save some $$$. Venues are expensive but Song River is very affordable in today's market, and honestly worth so much more with how beautiful, large, and customizable the space is. A family member was married here. $2500 gets you a beautiful space overlooking the water. We had use of the venue from 10am - 12 midnight. There was a bar area that had various sized glasses for 150 people. We brought our own beverages. We had use of the kitchen and did all the food ourselves. The bridesmaids decorated the chairs and gazebo that was made for the wedding. Two employees helped facilitate setting up plates and bussing tables. There is a dressing room for the bride (and wedding party) that has comfy couches, a dorm sized fridge and a counter space for hair & makeup people (if you bring them). There is a places to hang clothes. I saw hangers by the coat rack but I would bring hangers for gowns and dresses. The door by the kitchen can be locked. If you want privacy for this room, it is s good idea to have someone posted by the door. The facility has members that aren't restricted during your event. We saw a few people making their way to the dock that were not on our guest list. It would have been nice if they could have discreetly entered and avoided our dining area. We had 150 guests and a bridal party of twelve. There were only two stalls in each bathroom. If you want photo opps by the water, the bride and groom can take pictures on the dock. There is also a lovely place by the water that is a short walk from the building. The venue has various vases and containers that you can borrow to put on tables. The sound system is simple. There was a microphone. We brought our own music. There is a baby grand piano inside. Bonus points for the pretty views at sunset.

I was scheduled to have my wedding here on August 3rd. After booking in December and being told that construction would be completed in March my family and I checked in often to make sure everything was on track. The venue was not completed in March and we were given excuses every week since then about why things were not happening. My fiancé ended up going to see the construction progress on a date not scheduled with Peter and Crystal which is when he found the stop work order posted on their front door. Every time we had visited they covered this with a poster advertising the venue. We confronted them about this at our next meeting where they denied any problems and assured us that the venue would be completed. After looking into it more ourselves we found out that they do not have permits for the construction and have multiple people trying to get money back from them. At our next meeting we confronted Peter with this information where he finally said that our event would not be able to happen. The stop work order had been in affect since January. He chose not to inform anyone of this and keep taking people's money. We asked for our money back and he said if he wrote us a check it would bounce. They do not have any money and are scamming people. He promised to pay my dad back on Monday and it has not happened. He has stopped responding to us. Do not use this venue or their other venue called The Landing at Tyee. The construction has been done with out permits and the owners are lying to couples about what is going on with construction. Came for the opening of this shiny new spot yesterday. A gorgeous 3,000 square foot event space that was completely remodeled: with in house catering, vendors, event planners, photo booths, musician! And the food. It was like going to a super fun wedding minus the formality of it. The owner was there as well: super passionate and shared the story of how she bought this space sight unseen: took a long process in turning this into a gorgeous space that it is now. It was super cool! And the food!! They allow outside catering too but the in-house catering: Kaspar catering : baos topped with micro greens and mint. Steamed to serve! Poke rolls :delicious! Panna cotta : in a cup! Lisa Dupar catering: this one was fantastic as I've had a chance to taste their food in the past at a wedding. The gorgeous cupcakes, macarons, molasses cookies and stunning cake. All were so pretty! Mark ryan wine! I mean, what's not to love as it's one of the wineries I frequent in Woodinville wine country. My pup baci's favorite too. Luxe Photo Booth: this one was so fun! The 360 Photo Booth!! I've seen them in Time Squares recently as well as at a valentines event. But this one was so much more fun as I didn't have to wait in line or fight the crowd for it. The person that was running it was super friendly and helpful too. The jazz musician was pretty rad too. And they had valet!! Butler Valet: All the friendly guys in uniform waiting for you as you arrived during rush hour in downtown: pretty darn cool. All events should be this cool. I'm only going to events with valet from now on! Ok thanks.
