I don't even know how to begin describing this treasure. From the moment you view the exterior of…read morethis mansion, you will be impressed. Enter the foyer, and you are transported to the late 19th century, though much of the furniture and art seems to harken from the 1910's. While I am no design expert all I can say is that every detail of this place seems to be as it was originally. Every motif, woodwork on the walls -,the wainscoting, beveled glass, hand carved wood above entrance to each room-its breathtaking! Even the vintage radiators are gorgeous! Our bedroom upstairs was quite large with a bathroom containing a lovely old clawfoot tub. The bed we slept in was so comfortable I have never slept so soundly. When we finally found the kitchen (this place is HUGE) we were happy to find it has been updated and has all the modern conveniences. There is so much food available! From cake, cookie and brownie mixes, to freshly baked cookies and yummy lemon cake, to good quality coffee and creamers. And anything you could ever want for breakfast is here - every flavor of oatmeal, cereals, breads, milk, juices, etc. I wish I could better describe the experience of staying, here was but you have to experience it for yourself. The house is huge and you can explore little nooks and crannies, play pool in the pool room or chess in a nook next to a large window, or watch TV in a living room or explore outside in the beautiful garden/yard with a cute and friendly pet cat who follows you as you explore. This was so so so much better than staying at a motel that we will be coming back to experience it again and make the drive from Louisville Kentucky just to stay in this historical oasis.

The front desk staff was polite, and one woman did apologize, but beyond that, there was no real effort to make it right. The manager never came to speak with us, and we were told there were no other accommodations available. Our options were to stay in the infested cabin or leave early. They gave us garbage bags for our belongings, but they were such poor quality that they ripped immediately, not exactly helpful when trying to avoid bringing bed bugs home. We caught one of the bed bugs, took a photo, and left the actual bug on a receipt we found inside the cabin. The receipt appeared to be from a pest control company, possibly left behind by a contractor. That alone suggests this is a known issue, not an isolated incident. Despite that, the resort said pest control couldn't come until Monday, and only if they confirmed evidence would a refund be considered. So even with visible bites, a captured bug, and an existing pest control receipt, there was no proactive support or resolution. To be clear: I understand this is camping, and I expect some bugs, we're in nature. But my reasonable expectation of any lodging facility is heightened vigilance when it comes to pests, especially something as serious and invasive as bed bugs. That expectation was absolutely not met. Additionally, I witnessed several staff members in Basswood-branded merchandise driving around in golf carts while smoking, drinking, and tossing cigarette butts on the ground. It felt completely unprofessional, especially in a family-friendly environment. It was disheartening to see that behavior going unchecked by management. It's unfortunate, because Basswood Resort does have some fun amenities and the kids had a blast with the activities. But it's clear that maintenance and pest control are serious ongoing issues, and that management is not equipped or willing to respond to urgent problems in a way that prioritizes guest health and safety. Until those issues are addressed transparently and proactively, I can't recommend this resort. A good campground experience starts with clean, safe lodging, and sadly, that's not what we got.

We booked the sunnyside cottage on October 16 for the night of December 31. At the time of booking,…read morewe paid for the cost in full. We were not notified until a month later, November 13, that they supposedly double booked the cottage for the same night. How can an owner not realize they have double booked until a month later, especially since it is only 1 house? Maybe they got a better offer - someone who will stay more than 1 night - we really don't know. Initially when the owner called to tell us it was double booked, we informed her that we were on a budget and that the amount we spent on her cottage was the amount we could spend for another place for our 6 people (3 couples). The owner of the cottage, in her own words were "I promise I will get rooms for you". "We will get you all taken care of". Those are exact words from text messages! Between our phone conversation and the text messages, we took this as the owner would cover any extra costs for us to stay at another place. We thought she was taking care of getting our rooms especially since we had not received a refund, but we found out that was not the case. It was almost a month and a half (November 29) after paying before we received a phone call that she would not be getting our rooms. It was that same day, November 29, when we were actually refunded the money. . . and that was only after it was requested! As rental owners ourselves, we would assume the loss and pay for our mistakes. That is what quality business owners do! If a business promises something, we expect them to hold to it. This business provided less than desired service-nothing was done in a timely manner. I cannot not recommend doing business with anyone who cannot keep better track of their bookings.
