We were amazed at the beautiful house and how it was set up as a Bed & Breakfast! Mark and his wife, the owners, used to live in the house but decided to change it into a nice getaway for guests. The house in the front has the largest room, but expect to walk upstairs, as that is where the bedroom is. The guests from the other three private apartment rooms stay behind the large house; they all meet in the big house (no pun intended) to have Mark's hot, homemade breakfast. Oh, I almost forgot! The house is so clean, I didn't find any old dirt in the corners of the floor, against the walls anywhere. I am semi-OCD and will not go without house slippers. Well, I walked barefoot in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. I'm sorry if that is TMI. I wanted you to understand my point. Do not hesitate to book; do not let the name keep you away. It is not set up like a jail on the inside. The house has history, and Mark will tell you about it during breakfast or upon check-in. Don't hesitate! Book today! You will not be disappointed.

The spa needs its own review, but just know that with any spa purchase, you have two hours in the Grotto - a collection of steam rooms, dry sauna, jacuzzi, cold plunge shower, essential oil sprays and infused cold cloths, sugar or salt scrubs, and more. With any spa service purchase, you also have access to The Sanctuary - their quiet waiting/relaxation room complete with hot tea, snacks, coconut water, coloring books with pencil sets , encouraging short reads, cozy blankets and more. I'm telling you - with a single spa service, you have enough here to make a whole day out of it! Our dinner at Three Owls was fabulous, but did have a few misses. Our server kept sniffing her nose (about 30 times during our evening), the added chicken breast to my salad was a bit small and DRY, and the baked Brie (delicious) came with excessively crunchy focaccia bread. The lobby is gorgeous and has that early 20th century arcade feel, when each nook felt like it held its own mysteries. The rest of the property is badly in need of a renovation. The pool is too small for the throngs of people using it. My hotel room was dirty and nasty. Tears on the furniture, stains on the carpet, linens and bedding that smelled. Actually shortened my stay as a result. Same with most of the other public spaces. They just haven't invested enough in upkeep over the years. Everything else was overpriced and underwhelming: the restaurant, room service, the spa, even the town itself. There's so much potential to build out a lovely walkable village around the hotel, but like with most such places in Missouri, the opportunity is squandered. It's another impoverished small town that time has forgotten. Bottom line, it has lasted this long because of reputation and because there's not really anything else like it in the area. But that doesn't make it good. If you're in the area, stop by and take a picture and get a coffee at the lobby coffee bar. Then be on your way.

We stayed in the Carriage House, which had a full kitchen and plenty of room to sew. Dakota, the owner, set us up with two sewing machines and everything we need, except thread and fabric. It was SWEET (intentional). The house is beautiful - with original woodwork and flooring. Plus, very, very comfortable. It is located in town with parking on site. Our hostess made an excellent breakfast of French toast, bacon, fried potatoes and watermelon. I was able to self-serve my Keurig coffee in the morning and sit on the front porch to start my day. Definitely stay here! Security? It's Hamilton, MO. Just be sure you lock the outer doors at night PLUS your room has a combination lock on it too. We had no problems at all.

Before booking a room at Shoal Creek B&B, you should be aware that it is not owner-occupied…read more On page 5 of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Environmental Regulation and Licensure Unit Governing Lodging Establishments, the definition of "bed and breakfast" states that "the owner must live in or adjacent to the building." The owner, Terri Westover, does not live in or adjacent to the building. This is not disclosed on the B&B's website or in the reservation confirmation emails. Westover sent me an email the day I was to arrive, asking me what time I expected to be there. She advised that she would not be onsite and gave me the front door code. She said she would meet me when she came to serve breakfast the next morning. A nice couple arrived the same time I did. They had not received her email because they had been on the road, and they were surprised that she was not there. She had not informed them about the parking arrangements, so they scouted around for a place to park their RV. Once we got inside and toured the place, it was apparent that no one lives there. The bedrooms are all guest rooms. The refrigerator has only breakfast items. This means that when you reserve a room there, you have no way of knowing if you will be staying there alone, or with people you would rather not be alone with. You don't get to decide if that's an acceptable risk. Westover decides for you. When I was there, the other guests were lovely people. Probably all the guests who stay there are lovely people. But it is purely a matter of luck. Westover doesn't know squat about who is at her front door. All she's interested in is your credit card. She left a Hamilton visitors' guide in a nook, but there was no printed information with instructions in case of an emergency. I did not see lighted fire exit signs or fire extinguishers or smoke detectors. If you need to escape from your room, you'll have to jump from the second floor. Whether she changes the door code in between visitors is anybody's guess. There was no visible security apparatus. Someone would only have to break a ground-floor window to gain access to the house. Westover provides her phone number but she did not leave a list of emergency contacts. The nearest ER is in Cameron, 16 miles away. Anything that happens to the house, or to you or anyone else there during the night, you will have to deal with until Westover can get there, which will not be as fast as if she was there already. Since she is almost certainly in violation of zoning and licensure regulations, it begs the question what her insurance would cover in case of theft, damage to property or injury to someone's person. Whatever. There is something furtive about her lack of transparency. Poor hospitality is the best thing I can call it. She is not trustworthy, which is even worse.

I reserved "The Cottage" which was a typical small town 2 bedroom house right next door. It was perfect for us since we had another couple with us and after a night at the underground Irish pub, we were thankful that we didn't have to be quiet when we came back. We also had a great time playing the Wii and relaxing in the living room. I highly recommend The Cottage to anyone. Now for the breakfast, truly amazing! The 3 course meal left me full for the rest of the day and Peggy's expertise in the kitchen was on full display through the presentation and quality of the breakfast she had made. Peggy really made the morning fun with her bubbly personality, and hearing some of her stories was one of the highlights of the morning. To top everything off, I somehow managed to leave my toiletry bag in the bathroom and didn't realize it until later that night. So here I was expecting to drive the hour on my lunch break to pick it up when I checked my email and Peggy had sent me an email stating that she found it and had already mailed it to me. It had a vibe of a deserted pumpkin patch--random picture ops like phone booths and other oddities scattered around that didn't seem to quite make sense. There was a sign for a general store, but it didn't look open, if it was ever a store at all. Then, we found some double saloon doors leading to what appeared to be a bar. A sign inside said, "If you want a drink, call Jeff." Now, I don't know where Jeff was or what he was up to if he wasn't tending bar, but I wasn't about to find out. We snapped a few pics of the dusty artifacts, but didn't venture too far. After all, we were on a quick weekender, and the idea of a trip to urgent care for a tetanus shot didn't seem like the best plan. All in all, it was a quirky stop with some decent photo ops, but I read there's a B&B on the property. Can't say I'll be booking a stay anytime soon, though!

Isobel was so kind to answer all my questions and dive into the history of St. Joe and the house itself, clearly a huge passion of hers. My wife and I stayed in the Romeo and Juliet suite and it was so cozy we had a hard time leaving. I was impressed how clean and functional everything was given the age of the home, Isobel left no detail untouched. Isobel was always available to address our needs. I showed up to breakfast an hour early one morning by accident and that didn't matter, she adjusted for me. The next morning I showed up an hour late to breakfast, when I went downstairs expecting to only have coffee available, she still prepared and served us our breakfast which was so kind and not expected. My only concern before arriving was the location not being very central. Turns out I was wrong. My wife and I could get to any of the restaurants downtown or off Fredrick in 3 to 5 min drive. Everywhere else in town could be driven to within 10min. We'll be back. (PS - Glory is wearing a jacket in photos only because we were on our way out the door. The home was set a very comfortable temperature and our room had an independent thermostat just for us.)

I would stay here again for sure.
