The Joy Bar Review 8/9/2023 I've walked past this cute little place countless times on my way to Starbucks. But, today I decided to stop in and I am so glad that I did! Walking up, you can't help but feel at peace. It's a very quiet peaceful place. Everyone was helpful and nice! The decorations are minimal and very relaxed. It feels as if you walked into a piece of paradise in the middle of a town. The outdoor seating is located in the heart of downtown Glenellyn. It's very laid-back and festive. I ended up getting the "Crandmerry Rose" juice. It was so bright, clean, and refreshing. I loved how tangy it was! I didn't get a chance to try anything else. But, I'll definitely be back! A juice bar that makes everyone joyful. If not they fucking suck. The Joy Bar is the coolest place in Glen Ellyn literally and besides the bowls they also have toast. Check it out in the morning or afternoon. You can't go wrong with some kind of bowl even though prices on some things are high. Breakfast seems to be the best time to come because they have açaí bowls. If you don't want these they also have avocado toast. They're also open for lunch and have salads if you want something not breakfast related in any way. Busy at any time it seems which means people like it. The last time here I got a Pow Pow Bowl, as part of a balanced breakfast and liked this. It's $9.25 for a regular. This is made with açaí purée, almond milk, bananas, and cocoa, and is topped with almond butter, chia seeds, granola, and strawberries. Good stuff as far as breakfast. It has to be checked out for lunch whenever it is we come back here. The prices aren't all that bad for this kind of thing. read more

Wrong order. I ordered the Hilltopper Bowl with no coconut but received a bowl filled with blueberries, coconut and granola only. The bowl was good but too much açaí inside. However I would have preferred to get the bowl I ordered which includes strawberries and bananas also. I've had decent experiences here in the past. It's been months since I've been back. Today, I went in and the girls working looked miserably which I get... it seemed hot in the store. I got my drink, which is a smoothie.. you would think would be refreshing and it was not. I've orderEd this drink (brave smoothie) many times before and it was always great. I hate to write this review because l love the food at joy bar but the wait times have progressively gotten worse. The wait is always a little long (approx 10 minutes for a toast or smoothie) but today was ridiculous. We ordered two toasts and we were told it would take 10 minutes. After 25 minutes, our order hadn't even been started yet. We, along with another customer, that had only ordered a smoothie, both cancelled our orders and left. I understand if you are having difficulty staffing the business, but they had online orders coming in that they were filming before the customers that had ordered and were waiting in person. If you cannot support online ordering, maybe turn it off? I'm sad to say this is probably the last time we will be coming here as we drive a distance to get to joy bar and it's just not worth it anymore. read more

I heard about The Joy Bar, and I like trying new places especially when I can get some healthy food! I was already in Glen Ellyn so I decided to stop in. The menu was a little overwhelming, but instead of offering assistance the two baristas just kept chatting away about their evening adventures the day before. I was the only customer and it was a little awkward to for me to stand there trying to read the whole menu with them chatting away. I finally settled on just a smoothie, the Immortality, which has mango, orange, strawberries, banana and coconut water. The barista struggled with the blender. The smoothie was too think, it wouldn't blend, and she kept having to add more coconut water. Eventually she did manage to get it blended. It was a good smoothie, it was just an uncomfortable transaction to get it. It came to nearly $9 with tax, which seems a bit much. I would give Joy Bar another try if I find myself in downtown Glen Ellyn again, though that happens once every 5 years or so. read more

I would say the food here is 5 stars, but the employees and their capability to keep up with orders is a 1 Star. I think anything on their menu is delicious, you can't go wrong with any of it. If you have the patience to wait 10/15/20 minutes (longer on a weekend) then definitely come by. They only have high schoolers working here, which is fine, but they need adequate training. Especially with how to handle a rush. They don't seem to understand how to delegate amongst themselves to be efficient. I assume this is a first job for many of them. I had an experience today where myself and 5+ others waited over 20 minutes. They seemed to bring out orders quicker for the large group that was sitting down, even tho they ordered after everyone standing and waiting. Who I assume is the owner, came to the rescue. I have to start by saying a typically love The Joy Bar - the toasts are my absolute fave. I've been so disappointed with my last two orders that I don't think I can do it again. The sourdough bread used to be thick and fluffy (large pieces that I'd be able to get 2 meals out of - they'd fill up the to-go box) and now they are thin and SO TINY I honestly wondered how they were ok handing me almost chip-sized pieces. It's happened in the past and the owner would always include 3 slices instead of 2 on days where the bread wasn't the usual. On top of this disappointment, my cucumber spirals on this most recent order were just the brine. Stringy/wet and barely recognizable as cucumbers. read more

If I could give them two separate reviews, I would: 1. Food was delicious and deserves a 4 star rating since the smoothie was perfectly blended with natural ingredients. 2. Service and facility brought that 4 to a 1 since the space is too small for 3 large tables. Perhaps rethink the amount of seating to include more two-tops and or bar seating. Ordering food and drink and realizing that the teens from the high school are camping out reduced the appeal. read more

A light and tasty breakfast but I won't be back. 1) It took over half an hour for my smoothie bowl to be prepared. Several people bailed in line behind me because they could see they wouldn't be able to get their food within a reasonable time frame (I think 10 minutes is reasonable for this kind of fast-casual place). When my smoothie bowl was finished, I thought some kind of communication from the staff would be in order, whether that be a simple apology or even throwing in an extra food or drink item for my time. Nothing was said. 2) My Hilltopper smoothie bowl was good but not worth the $10 I paid for it (including tax). I think the price point is too high. 3) Seating is limited and could be more comfortable. There was one comfy booth area that another party was at but my friend and I ate at a table with plastic chairs. Not the best. I think this place recently opened so there might be some kinks to work out in their operation but I still think their pricing and customer service need to be tweaked. read more

I'm giving five stars because everything I've tried from The Joy Bar has been absolutely delicious. However, there are some major areas for improvement and I hope this review will help get things running a little smoother in the future. For example, on a recent visit, the following items could've been executed more effectively: 1.) We requested avocado toast "extra toasted" and when we got our order, it wasn't toasted at all. It also didn't have the additional toppings on it that we ordered. 2.) My matcha latte took quite a while to make, and when it came out it wasn't hot at all (lukewarm at best). There was no way for the employees to heat it up, so I had to drink it over ice. 3.) In general, it took a long time to get our order and the two food items (for two different people) came out about 10 minutes apart. It kind of took away from the experience of enjoying a rare meal together with my sister. I still can't wait to go back, but I really hope that some of these issues are addressed to make for a more reliable experience. My advice to others is to give it a little extra time, but definitely don't miss out! The menu is outstanding!! read more

I was headed to a different bfast place and we had a train stop on the tracks for 45 min so I ended up at The Joy Bar. I had the avocado toast and a coffee and I am seriously blown away. The toast is city level and the coffee was actually brewed correctly! (They serve intelligentsia) I will def be back here with my family. I'm so happy The Joy Bar opened! I've had their juices and smoothies for breakfast before and I meant to leave a review then but I just had the Bahn Mi toast and it was amazing!! The gluten free bread is vegan so just a heads up if you are vegan that's the one you want but there are seriously so many options smoothies, smoothie bowls, salads, it looked like they had some pre made wraps and stuff in the cooler with the juice too, and toasts! I want to try the Malibu that one looks good too. SO HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE it's seriously hard to find a place you can get healthy fresh food with vegan options for everything on the menu if it isn't already. Order took forever and was totally wrong when I received it. Many employees working and no one waiting on anyone, all standing around talking But was able to find out someone has a new boyfriend. So if you want a smoothie go elsewhere but if you want to hear about someone's new boyfriend go to the joy bar. I love healthy options and small, mom and pop businesses, so I was excited to try this place out! I had the toast with almond butter and jam and it was incredibly delicious! Problem was, there were only 3 small tables and they were all occupied. Obviously it's a small space, but I would recommend some seating along the window or benches instead of tables to occupy more people. Also, the price point seemed high on the juices. I did purchase one, and was a little disappointed that they didn't make it fresh to order (you have to take a premade one from the fridge). The salads were also premade. I think people would be willing to pay more for made to order dishes. I would try it again, but I think some changes need to be made for them to be successful for the long term. The food is healthy and usually fresh. Website needs to be updated. Ordered online for curbside pick up. Website says call but no one answers. You have to go in. That's fine. Order not quite ready. That's fine too. One salad which was "ready" was missing ingredients and the extra avocado I paid for. They have good juices. I purchased one. The expiration on the juice bottle at the bottom said best by 5 days prior. Didn't see that until I got home. I don't expect everything to be perfect but if I pay 7.95 for a juice it should not technically be expired. Prefer to contact establishment directly but no option on website that I could find. And staff there are working very hard but a smile and a little courtesy like a greeting and how can I help you goes a long way. 5 stars for the bowl my daughter wanted. Yum.
