They have a sign outside the door that says "please take off your mask before entering this store." I've never seen anyone go in and we've lived here for 2 years now. My mom having been on a ventilator last year with COVID, it's a deeply offensive sight. I don't know how they still have the space. I went in today with my girlfriend and her sister and at first, was greeted warmly by the owner and we chat for a long time. All was well until she started going off about people attacking her online for being christian and wrongly assumed I was christian myself. She went on saying how the people who follow her on instagram were " good, trump supporting people." She also mentioned how she disagreed with gay people wile my girlfriend was standing next to me. the yarn is overpriced, was not pleased with anything I found, and the trump flag in the window is tacky. We left feeling very uncomfortable. I love supporting small businesses but after that conversation, I did not feel bad about leaving empty-handed. If you are trying to grow your business, there are some things to keep to yourself. read more

I have had the pleasure of working on an online purchase from The Joy of Knitting and cannot recommend this shop more highly. The owner is a delight to deal with and will go to great lengths to ensure she has happy customers. It truly breaks my heart that online reviews have become a tool for people to use to post negative reviews because of differing political viewpoints. Was on a trip with the family to Nashville, and wife forgot her project bag, so had to look somewhere to get her at least yarn and hooks. The owner were there, my wife asked for some specific pattern and pink yarn. The owner was very rude, and unhelpful, to say the least. Another customer overheard, and suggested we just check House Of Yarn, which we did, and what a 180 over what we encountered at Joy of Knitting. Just save yourself time, and stop at House of Yarn or Bliss Yarns (Another place we checked out while in Nashville). Both of those have a better selection of hooks and yarns, as well as much friendlier staff. read more

I stopped in on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, to buy yarn for a Women's March hat requested by a friend, and made the "mistake" of mentioning what I was looking for when the shop owner asked me if I needed assistance. She responded with a hateful outburst about the "vile, nasty, evil ladies" of the Women's March and was told she would not sell me anything. I left the shop in shock. I have never been treated so disrespectfully by a retail business owner or salesperson. This shop is cold, unfriendly, and owned by a woman who feels it's perfectly fine to verbally abuse customers and refuse them service. I will be taking my business to other local yarn shops, and recommend you do the same. read more

Was visiting town to see a friend and wanted to get some supplies for a project to work on on the plane, so I stopped in here. Big mistake. The prices are ridiculous, and the fee for project help is insulting. Elizabeth, the owner, clearly thinks that her help is worth $50/hour, but it is definitely not. Luckily, my friend's grandma was able to help me fix the mess the owner made of my project. The markup on yarn is pretty steep, and you can get better quality for cheaper at most small shops. Luckily, there are are lot of good yarn shops in Franklin and definitely Nashville, so take your business somewhere else. read more

I was visiting family over Thanksgiving and was going to make my young niece a hat and mittens for Christmas, so we went to this store so she could pick out the colors of yarn she wanted for her hat and mittens. Except the woman in the store would not let my niece in the store to pick out colors. Apparently children aren't allowed in the store. This is foreign to me, as my grandma, who taught me to knit, always took me with her to buy her supplies. Shopping with her is what instilled my curiosity in yarn to begin with and made me the crafter I am today. It's sad that this woman named her store Joy of Knitting, but only she decides who gets that Joy. read more

This shop is amazing! I have rarely been in such a welcoming enviornment. You can really tell that Elizabeth at JOK loves what she does. She offers classes, a monthly knit-along (or sometimes corchet-along), and a Friday night knitting group. Stop by anytime with a project to sit and work for a while. Elizabeth is also great with helping you learn new techniques or work through problems or mistakes! The selection of yarns, pattern books and notions is great and always expanding. I always end up buying something when I go in, even if I am just stopping by to knit! For all knitters, crocheters and weavers, this shop is a must visit! read more

My girls and I are enjoying learning to knit and crochet. Elizabeth came to my daughter's birthday party and taught the guests how to crochet! The Joy of Knitting offers exquisite and luxurious fibers and related knit/crochet items. Elizabeth was extremely helpful and cordial to us when visiting her store and went out of her way to locate additional skeins needed for my project from the producer. She clearly enjoys her service to the knit/crochet community and explained/demonstrated the beautiful knitted item in progress, even though we do not knit. We did not experience the usual attitude of "crochet is beneath me" mantra of a nearby popular knitting only business. We understand her denial of the sale of materials which supported the women's march a couple of years due to the vulgarity of the demonstrators. Everyone is entitled to their first amendment rights of free speech. One reviewer states the shop is now closed. I hope not; this was/is one of the best. read more

I will call it a "sadness of knitting; how do you stay in business place". Every time I try to shop there they are closed, or have no choince of yarn ( only cheapest acrylics that Hobby Lobby offers for half price). I asked once for knitting classes. 2 years ago. Was told to follow them on FB to get dates. Nothing of that sort was ever published instead the owner put in a "go fund me link" for 35 grant for store expansion. Right. Today however took a cake. I promised my boys that we will go to the store and they can pick yarn colors because they wanted me to knit each a scarf. We were not allowed to enter the store because their policy does not allow kids in the store. I get the fact people coming in and let their kids loose and creating havoc. But just basically kicking out a customer because of walking in with children, who by the way we're at their best behavior holding my hand is insane to me. Did I mention that this lady has entire front of the store decorated in scripture... Clearly she is not reading the Bible with a actual understanding. I've been here a few times when I've been in town (I've driven over from Brentwood), and it's been "meh". I can't ever find the particular yarns I need. I asked for help once, about two months ago, and was tuned out, literally. The women working there were too busy chatting with each other to help any customer. So, I haven't been back since. Otherwise, good luck getting help other than a request to leave. Yarn is incredibly overpriced for the quality (or lack thereof!). I can get better from big box stores for a fraction of the price. If all LYS stores were like this, I would understand why they are struggling. I am glad to report, however, that most LYS are friendly and welcoming. This one, not so much. On a recent trip to the area I stopped at 2 yarn shops. The first one, where I spent $300 on a beautiful selection of yarn and this one, where I walked out without spending anything. The selection left a lot to be desired but I probably would have purchased something anyway as I am a big believer in supporting small businesses but the owner was so pushy, followed me around telling me the fiber content of each yarn and wouldn't give me room to breathe. There was no way I was giving her any of my money so I told her I was looking for a yarn that I knew she didn't have and I got out of there and will never go back. The location is also questionable, nestled into a run down plaza neighboring a Goodwill. The store set up is unlike any yarn store I've ever been in (and I've been in a lot of them) and not in a good way. Everything is stacked on the floor and requires a lot of stooping. Save yourself the trip and head to Haus of Yarn in Nashville where the owner and selection are amazing. read more

I visited The Joy of Knitting in Franklin TN for the first time this weekend. Oh my gosh, this shop is incredible. It is the "gourmet" shop of yarns. You will find every texture, textile content, pattern and price variety. I have visited yarn shops all over the eastern US, this shop stands above the rest. The owner makes you feel as if you are her best friend. I live 3+ hours from Franklin; I will make the trip as often as possible to shop at The Joy of Knitting. I love the JOK and plan on returning this year. I had to stop for awhile due to my Mothers health before she passed away and I am super excited about re-joining the ladies soon. Elizabeth is super caring and will be the first to tell you how blessed she is to have her sweet little shop. Being a shop owner of delicate yarns, I understand her policy not to allow children. They may have just eaten next door at the pizza shop or have sticky candy on their hands and then they touch or pick up the yarns. Sometimes they are tired or sick, screaming or crying while there are ladies gathered for a paid class. It just makes sense; where has common sense gone! I am a Grandmother and I admire her tenacity in adhering to her policy. Also, she has the right to serve or not serve folks that participate in a certain behavior that is not true to who she is and her personal beliefs. You have the right to go somewhere else and she has the right to stand by her policies even if you do not agree with them. Not enough folks are willing to stand their ground anymore; she is a strong lady and successful business woman who is exhibiting her rights as a small business owner. read more

I came all the way from Florida to Franklin, TN to visit my younger female relative that has a terrible illness. She is in and out of the hospital. She talks about how cold hospitals can be. I know how to knit, so I started knitting her a blanket a while back. It goes from dark blue to light pink, her favorite colors. I wanted to finish knitting the blanket I was making for her while I was up there. I ran out of baby pink yarn, though. I ended up going to this store because it was close and recommended by an older female relative that shops there sometimes. I went inside and a rather pleasant looking lady was behind the counter, no one else in the store. I asked her for some baby pink yarn. The look she shot me could have killed a person. It was like night and day. She went from happy looking to just, I don't know how to describe it. Mean looking. She then proceeded to ask me what I wanted it for, in a passive aggressive tone. I was so horrified! I said "Never mind, have a nice day." and left the store quickly. I told my older female relative what had happened and that is when she explained to me that there were protests going on and the store was pretty vocal about it. All I wanted was to finish the blanket. I could not find the color I wanted elsewhere so I had to ship the blanket after returning to Florida. I guess, maybe if you are a regular person and agree with this lady's views your fine. If you are a stranger, though, be prepared to be judged. read more
